Personal Description:
I love history! I have been 'doing' history since I was 14, and it is something that encapsulates me into a whole different world. I have worked as a history teacher at a secondary school for 10 years, and have loved delving back into the past with the older and younger students alike. I studied and worked in archaeology before becoming a history teacher, and found working with real objects from the past was an amazing experience. More recently, I have reignited my love of English too, especially with regards to theatre and plays. Being close to London enables me to visit the West End as much as I can, and immerse myself in the amazing culture of Language and drama.

At home, I am mum to a 7 year old daughter, and 5 year old son, a cat and a dog. We keep ourselves busy being outdoors as much as possible and are totally hooked on camping! We enjoy the freedom it allows and the back-to-basics feeling. Plus the kids love getting muddy and staying up after dark, so camping allows for total liberation! My daughter has got the theatre bug too, and together we enjoy live performances as much as we can.

Teaching Experience:

I have been teaching History at KS3, GCSE, AS and A-Level for 13 years. For four of those years I was Head of Department, responsible for issues such as curriculum, exams and monitoring student progress, so I am experienced in identifying areas of need for students and helping them to progress. I have been very successful with exam results, and have enjoyed guiding tutee's through their exam subjects.

I have very good knowledge of many of the exam boards and have been a marker for AQA and Edexcel GCSE History since 2014.
I am also a lead moderator for the A-Level Unit 4 coursework with Edexcel. I have substantial knowledge and understanding of what exam boards are looking for in responses to exam questions and coursework objectives.

I have been teaching GCSE English and Functional Skills in English to a wide range of people - adults and youth groups - since 2013, which has broadened my teaching spectrum, and provided me with new challenges in terms of my teaching. It is something that has been enjoyable and that I intend to continue.

I have been tutoring since Dec 2011, and really enjoy the change from class teaching. I have tutored a wide range of students with a wide range of needs, and have taught to all the exam boards. It is really rewarding to set up individual lessons and focus on exactly what is needed, knowing I can offer help and support to students. I like to be well prepared for individual lessons and to make the most of the time we have to improve techniques, subject knowledge and overall exam grades.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe that what really helps students to progress is an understanding of exam technique. Having knowledge of the subject is important, but knowing how to handle it and use it in an exam situation if key to gaining top grades. I like to adopt a friendly and approachable manner with students to encourage focus and progress. I will go through essays and exam questions to identify areas that could be improved, and suggest ways of improving the use of language to make the most of student's knowledge. Giving feedback for written work is imperative to aid progress and this will take a large role in my tutoring.

Tutoring Approach:

My teaching approach is to create a relaxed and friendly atmosphere in which students feel more confident to raise questions. Students who study with me are encouraged and supported in developing critical thinking skills, by analysing information more deeply, allowing them to become more efficient, resourceful learners in the future.

I have two main approaches for the students I teach:
For students struggling in a subject I aim to build up confidence in the area by ensuring lessons are relaxed and engaging rather than focused on specific topics. Once a student has become more comfortable in the subject, more targeted study can take place based on the syllabus.
For students who are competent in their subject but need additional support to excel, I take a more focused approach and work with the student on any weak points and advanced topics, supported by exam technique and practice questions.
In both cases I aim to broaden the knowledge of the student beyond specific subject guidelines, with the goal of developing a passion for their subject.

I am a friendly and enthusiastic 24 year old Mathematics graduate.

In September, I will start my PGCE to teach Secondary Mathematics in Manchester.

Teaching Experience:

I have 3 months' experience teaching Mathematics and English at a private school in central Bangkok.
This was a full-time position which involved planning, classroom teaching and marking. I taught Mathematics to students aged between 8 and 15.

I have also had 2 weeks' experience working in the Mathematics department at Kenton School. In this position I shadowed teachers and took on the role of a classroom assistant, often helping students one-to-one.

Tutoring Approach:

I am passionate about my subject and helping students with their work. I strive to make every lesson productive, enjoyable and rewarding. I am happy to tutor students on specific topics they may be struggling with and to help with exam preparation/revision.

A-levels in Maths (A plus S1), Further Maths (B), Physics (A plus S2), and Chemistry (B), taken in 1984.
MA in Computer Science with Mathematics from Cambridge University in 1987.
Qualified as a Chartered Accountant (with the ICAEW) in 1990.

Career Summary

I worked as an accountant for 30 years, culminating in a role as Chief Financial Officer of Ireland's largest insurance company. I have worked with UK and European regulators, and was responsible for managing a multi-billion pound investment portfolio. I worked as a freelance senior finance manager for two years, in the City of London.

Recently I decided to have a career change, and become a secondary school (GCSE and A-Level) teacher, in the Science Department, specialising in Physics. Before starting my teacher training in September 2017 I am spending a term working as a cover teacher, across all subjects and covering Year 7 (11-year olds) through Year 13 (18-year olds).

Personal Details

I live in rural Northamptonshire, and am very excited about my new career. I have a DBS (criminal records check) allowing me to work unsupervised with children. I enjoy travelling, cultural tourism and cooking. I am a non-smoker.

Teaching Experience:

While working as an accountant, I set up and ran the company's trainee accounting scheme and have always enjoyed teaching and coaching, from basic levels to delivering training for Boards of Directors.

I enjoy teaching and coaching my 14-year old daughter, and have some experience coaching primary school Maths (in preparation for Year 6 SATs). I felt called to teaching and have changed careers to enable this. I have recent experience teaching secondary school classes, but enjoy 1:1 coaching very much. I am easy to get on with and can establish good rapport with my students very quickly.

My formal teacher training starts in September 2017, but my life experience and subject matter knowledge make me well suited to the role of tutor. I am largely skewed towards numerical subjects, but am also fastidious in my use of English grammar and writing, due to having spent thirty years providing high quality reports to senior and junior colleagues.

Tutoring Approach:

I very much prefer to work using the syllabus and textbooks with which the student is already familiar, as it can be very confusing to be taught different approaches by a school and by a tutor. If textbooks are unavailable (many schools do not allow textbooks to be taken home), I can probably source them, but at the student/parent's expense.

My style is very engaging, and I seek to understand how my students view the subject, and work with them to fill in any gaps and increase student confidence. I don't like giving rote lessons, which I think are dry and little better than reading the textbook. I really enjoy bringing a subject alive by relating the topic to the real world, and by including interesting facts and information.

Tutoring has to work both for the tutor and the student, and I will always try to make the lessons fun and stimulating. If I don't think the student is benefitting from my tuition, I will discuss this at an early stage. It makes no sense to press on with continued lessons if my approach or the student response is unsatisfactory.

I don't think that every student can become A* grade in every subject, but tuition can increase confidence, improve performance, reduce anxiety, and give a student the best possible chance of fulfilling their potential.
