Teaching Experience:

I began Spanish tuition over 30 years ago. I now have my own Spanish Tuition Business where I tailor Spanish Tuition courses to suit the individual and at a pace conducive to successful learning. Two years ago I worked with the BBC on their Spanish learning programmes for key stage 3 and 4.

Tutoring Approach:

I cater for visual (learn by seeing), auditory (learn by hearing) and kinesthetic (learn by doing) learners and, in general, I find it beneficial to incorporate all of these learning approaches into a typical Spanish tuition lesson to keep it interesting and engaging.

A teacher should have the ability to identify the needs of a student and to plan and design a course pertinent to that student. A teacher should be able to recognize learning styles and adapt their teaching accordingly in order to deliver and facilitate learning. A teacher needs to assess his or her students in order to ascertain their knowledge gained and give constructive and developmental feedback. Above al, the most important quality is a student must feel free to approach the tutor with confidence and ask any question. It's easy to teach, the test is whether they have learnt. A good sense of humor is essential, no one learns when they are unhappy.

Personal Description:
Hi, my name is Imogen and I'm 23 years old. I am a recent graduate from the University of Kent and completed a year abroad in Paris. I studied French, with modules in International Relations, Politics and German. I previously studied the International Baccalaureate instead of A Levels and whilst doing this tutored a 16 year old girl in GCSE French - she went from a C to an A with just simple tutoring of the basics. I graduated with a 2:1, with all my grammar modules being awarded a first.
My year abroad was spent with a French company, improving my French by being surrounded by solely French speakers! I returned from working and living in the French language feeling hugely confident in my foreign language abilities across all disciplines (listening, reading, writing and speaking).
Currently, I work in construction but use my French to liaise with occasional sub contractors and supply chain. Tutoring is my way of continuing with French before being able to get employed by a French construction company down the line.
I believe that I have a friendly approach to tutoring - and I am confident in my approach with my current 8 and 11 year old students who are mentored in different ways.

Teaching Experience:

As previously mentioned, I tutored a 16 year old girl in GCSE French. Over the 9 month period, we improved on her basic grammar skills and reading and listening skills also. From this site, which I joined in December 2012, I gained one student very quickly and during our 4 months tutoring sessions, she improved her basic understanding tremendously, progressing from a D to a B for her oral exam in April.
My tutoring has continued as part of my job at a school, holding outside the classroom small group sessions.
I am currently tutoring siblings, who are moving to France this year with their family. My approach varies with each of them and I have already seen leaps and bounds of improvement from them both!
My success rate demonstrates my ability to work well as a tutor.

Tutoring Approach:

In terms of my approach to tutoring, I like to assess what the tutee finds difficult and try and work in a different way to how they are accustomed to to see if it helps at all. I draw a lot from my experiences as a student as I have found the ways in which I have been taught very easy to understand. I would like to say that my approach is a lot more suited to children because, like them, I am a student too and I understand what they are coping with and how their mind works. Listening is of key importance and I make sure that I listen to what my tutee is trying to say.

Personal Description:
I am a Cambridge PhD student studying the fascinating complexity of fish behavior. I am a supervisor in zoology at Cambridge, for which I won the award for best supervisor in the sciences, and have worked as a tutor for all grade levels. I love animals and nature, and write fiction in my spare time. I come from a big family and am used to spending time with children and adults of all ages.

Teaching Experience:

My first formal tutoring job was during my undergraduate degree at Harvard University, where I worked as a peer tutor for biology, physics, and chemistry modules I had taken for my course. Working with peers was an excellent way to build communication skills to best explain complex concepts in a variety of scientific fields. My interests are not limited to science, however- I completed a minor degree in English and earned a certificate in Spanish as a part of my undergraduate education. I had the chance to tutor these subjects (in addition to maths and sciences) as a tutor for Varsity Tutors, a tutoring company in America. I worked for Varsity Tutors for about two years, tutoring students in person near my family home in Chicago for one year and online during the first year of my PhD. I am presently a PhD student in Cambridge, and I began supervising Cambridge students in the fall of 2016. I supervised two modules, both in Evolution and Behavior, and had the wonderful experience of teaching several groups of students for three terms (two courses and revision supervisions prior to exams). Building a connection with these students and watching them develop as scholars and as people was incredibly rewarding. I feel lucky to have taught them, and they nominated me for a Cambridge University Students' Union (CUSU) student-led teaching award. CUSU received about 600 nominations for the student-led teaching awards, and I won the award for best supervisor in the sciences.

Tutoring Approach:

As a tutor with the Bureau of Study Counsel at Harvard, Varsity Tutors, and as a supervisor at Cambridge, I have found that one of the most important aspects of my role as a tutor is to connect personally with students to tailor my lessons to their learning styles and interests while bolstering their self-confidence. I have received some touching messages from parents of my students reiterating this fact (the students that stick out in my memory are a 14-year-old student I tutored in Advanced Placement Psychology who had become disheartened due to an ineffective teacher, and an 18-year-old basketball-focused student I tutored in English who developed his interest in writing and was considering studying poetry at university). I think that empowering the student to master the material is a very important part of being an effective tutor.
