Personal Description:
I am a Chinese native speaker who is fascinated by my own culture and language and have a passion to teach this great subject and keen to share the beauty of my language with others.
I hold a Certificate in Language Teaching to Adults, which is issused by Goldsmiths College, University of London. I am so delighted I have achieved "A" grade in my teaching practice assessment in above university. Also, I have finished the other part time teacher training courses on the lifelong learning sector. I believe that that private tutor's post will be a great opportunity to put my theory study into practice, improve my teaching skills and fulfils my ambition.

Teaching Experience:

My experience included:
Teaching my own children Chinese.
As a Chinese community teacher.
As a Chinese teacher at a local goverment funding adult learning center.
Employed by different language agent as a freelance Chinese tutor.
Self employed as private Chinese tutor.

Tutoring Approach:

I would stick to one or two straightforward objectives for one lesson and kept my materials as simple as possible. I would use contrasting pictures, colour word cards and self-made flashcards in order to make the lesson interesting and easy to follow. When presenting new grammar, I always try to kept it basic and simple. Moreover, I would use self-made puzzles to guided the learners to using logic, intuition and elimination to make up a character. It is also important to make learning fun and entertaining so I would try to maintain some humour when teaching. I would like to make the lessons interesting, enjoyable and memorable and students obtain the knowledge of the Chinese language through entertaining and the subconscious way. Last but not least, I would use up-to-date course books and learning material.

Personal Description:
I have a very broad based scientific knowledge that I have developed throughout a lifetime devoted to academic and applied research. I hold a BSc degree in chemistry and zoology and a PhD in endocrine physiology. I have worked abroad in a medical research laboratory, at the Max plank Institute for Biochemistry, where I investigated the genetic basis for hereditary diseases of connective tissue. During that time I became a fluent German speaker. Subsequently I worked for over 25 years as a senior scientist at Rothamsted Research, which is a world renowned Plant Research Institute. At Rothamsted I acquired specialised knowledge in soil science, plant nutrient acquisition, molecular biology, metabolite chemistry, plant biotic stress and chemical ecology. Consequently, I can offer an in depth and up to date knowledge of a number of different areas relevant to the A level biology and chemistry curricula and to the three GCSE science subjects. Also, I have a unique perspective that I bring to my tutoring that emanates from my professional scientific experience. I believe that I can introduce a fresh angle to the learning experience that builds upon that acquired in the class room.

Teaching Experience:

Through out my career as a scientist, teaching and mentoring has been an integral part of my activities. I have taught a number of graduate and undergraduate students, visiting workers, other colleagues and junior members of staff to acquire theoretical, practical and communication (both written and oral) skills. I have undertaken in house training as a PhD supervisor and I have played a major role in the supervision of at least six PhD students and three bursary students. All have successfully completed their experimental tasks, written their theses and gone on to progress their careers.
I am an experienced speaker at International and National conferences and I have delivered seminars and lectures to both specialist and non specialist audiences.
I have organised practical projects for groups of students from local secondary schools as part of the requirement for the CREST award. One of the projects involved measuring vitamin C levels in different foods and the students were surprised to discover that cabbage was the best source. In another project different varieties of barley were tested for their tolerance to high levels of salt and the students were able to establish that the most tolerant varieties accumulated salt in their leaves.
Since leaving full time science (due to funding cuts) I have initiated a career in private tutoring to A level and GCSE students. I have been teaching up to thirty pupils concurrently, either in my home or in their own homes. I have been employed at Kings College London to teach an A level Chemistry access course, which involves delivering 4 hours of lectures per week to a group of students from overseas. I have also taken a course to qualify as a teacher of English as a foreign language (CELTA/PTLLS). During the course I gained experience in teaching both elementary and advanced intermediate adult students from a range of different nationalities.
I was a school governor for many years and partly as a result of this I was often called upon to prepare students for university interviews, particularly for science, medicine and dentistry.

Tutoring Approach:

I take a student centred approach to teaching, trying to understand the needs of the individual pupil and tailoring the lesson content accordingly. By limiting the amount of "teacher talk" at the outset I try to provide the student with the opportunity to convey what their interests and aptitudes are and what areas of the subject they may be struggling with, so that they can benefit maximally from my tutoring. I consider it essential that I build their confidence and create an atmosphere where they are happy to participate actively in the lessons and test out their ideas. I attribute great importance to positive rapport with the student and try to develop a trusting relationship, both with the pupil and, if apropriate, with the parents.
I plan the lessons carefully, always starting with targeted questions before moving on to detailed explanations of problem areas. I have a large collection of past papers which I use to re enforce the learning and check understanding. For particularly difficult topics, photosynthesis, respiration and oxidative phosphorylation for example, I find it helpful to recap in the subsequent lesson to ensure that the student has grasped the important concepts inorder to enable them to answer the questions confidently in an exam situation.
Obviously, I enjoy teaching keen students who have an ambition to pursue science further but I also find it rewarding to make lessons interesting and enjoable for those who are less engaged with the subject.

APPROACH TO TUITION

Tailoring tuition to suit the student
The advantage of one-to-one tuition is that I can assess what specific needs a student has, and organise my lessons around those needs. Some students need essay technique help some have a specific set of topics they want to go over others might need an entire course taught to them as they have left school or are being home educated.

Knowing the syllabus
All GCSEs and A Levels follow a national syllabus, and I know them all very well. In my first lesson with any student I will make sure they are aware of the overall requirements of the syllabus, on a topic-by-topic basis. I will always stick to what the student needs to know to pass that particular syllabus I do not needlessly make students learn things they do not need to know.

Digital handouts
In my years of tuition, I have built up a cloud-based digital archive of hundreds of handouts. Say a student is learning about arguments for the existence of God for RS A Level - I have handouts very clearly outlining the Ontological, Teleological and Cosmological arguments and all relevant criticisms. These handouts are a great extra help alongside my teaching.

Teaching Experience:

I have thousands of hours of tuition experience, having taught hundreds of students. I have dozens of letters of recommendation. Some of the specific subjects I have taught include:

Government & Politics (Edexcel and OCR)
Cambridge Pre-U Theology & Philosophy
Philosophy A Level (AQA, OCR and Edexcel)
Religious Studies (OCR, AQA and Edexcel) GCSE, A Level
Sociology (AQA) AS and A2
Theology and Religious Studies at degree level (I have helped six different students receive good grades for third year RS dissertations)
Oxbridge applications and interview practice

I have a written reference from a doctor of Philosophy and college chaplain at Cambridge University, as well as an excellent reference from my full-time tutoring placement for the last year.

Extracts from letters of recommendation (all available in full on request):

"Incredibly reliable and professional...James' superior knowledge and passion for his subject resulted in my son gaining both in confidence and ability and led him to succeed in achieving a Distinction grade when his school had predicted a Merit."
Mother of Pre-U student, 2013.

"James's enthusiasm, attention to detail and ability to make the lessons interesting and absorbing has paid off...I cannot recommend James highly enough. He is punctual and thoughtful and I would not hesitate to hire him again in the future."
Mother of homeschooled A2 candidate taught full time for a year in History (Edexcel), Sociology (AQA) and Religious Studies (Edexcel), 2011/12.

"A great source of help to my daughter over the past two years; making smooth preparations for her to retake her AS level, alongside her continuing work towards her A level. He contributed invaluably towards her outstanding AS level pass mark of 100% . For her A2, Olivia received an A."
Mother of Philosophy A Level (AQA) Candidate, 2012/13.

"James was an excellent tutor. He explained complex ideas clearly and tailored his tutoring to suit my son. Importantly, he acted as a strong motivator and made sure rigourous revision notes were made... humourous, friendly and a good natured motivator. My son received an A*".
Mother of GCSE Religious Studies student (OCR), 2012/13.

"He immediately established a very good working relationship with my daughter which encouraged her to really engage with the subject and plan and think about the topics in depth. He helped her with the structure of her essays and how to build up a coherent and well thought out argument...I would highly recommend James as a Philosophy tutor."
Mother of Religious Studies (OCR) student, 2012/13.

"Jame's enthusiasm, attention to detail and ability to make the lessons interesting and absorbing has paid off...I cannot recommend Jame's highly enough. He is punctual and thoughtful and I would not hesitate to hire him again in the future."
Mother of homeschooled A2 candidate taught full time for a year in History (Edexcel), Sociology (AQA) and Religious Studies (Edexcel), 2011/12.

"James was very familiar with the curriculum and both his discussions with my son and the work set were of an appropriate and challenging level, set work was always marked and discussed at the following tutorial. My son received a good Distinction in his exams."
Mother of Pre-U Philosophy & Theology student (Cambridge), 2013.

"My daughter was unable to attend school due to illness, and so James was entirely responsible for her preparation. She received a Distinction in her exams. James was a diligent tutor, who managed to convey this difficult subject with a lightness of touch. I know that my daughter enjoyed her lessons enormously, and that she found it easy to learn from James. He not only imparted the necessary knowledge but also inspired her with confidence."
Mother of homeschooled Pre-U Philosophy & Theology student (Cambridge), who I taught the entire syllabus to in 2012/13.

"James was brilliant. Despite tutoring my two twin daughters at the same time, he adapted his teaching style to suit both of them differently. He made the whole course much easier for them to understand than they had found at school. Beyond this, he boosted their confidence and increased their essay writing skills. He provided a large amount of digital handouts which they also found useful. Both girls ended up with very high As in all the topics he taught them in."
Mother of twin daughters taught in Religious Studies (OCR) and Philosophy (AQA), 2012/13.

"...James covered far more content than the school had taught in a whole year and to a greater depth and understanding. His knowledge of the syllabus and ability to explain complex philosophical arguments and content, in a way that my daughter could understand, was second to none... put back a confidence in my daughter that had been partly destroyed in this subject due to poor teaching at school. I have never seen my daughter so relaxed and happy after taking an exam than she was after re-taking these two."
Mother of homeschooled candidate in Religious Studies (Edexcel), 2012/13.

Personal Description:
I am a highly experienced Maths tutor, geared toward ensuring you get the best exam grades possible in your field. I will increase your understanding of maths, and my explanations are simple and straightforward. Alongside tutoring, I will guide you through exam techniques, and common pitfalls.

Teaching Experience:

6 years private tutor. 4 years private tutor in Maths 1, Maths 2, and Mechanics of Materials of University's courses.
2 years experiences in GCSE and A Level Mathematics.

Tutoring Approach:

My teaching strategy usually involves engaging the student in critical thinking early on, as I believe this is the key to understanding, and I will never "tell" a student what he should do, or why this is like that, but to direct his thinking so that he/she understands why this is the way it is, and why should he/she act that way. I do not believe in memorisation being the main way of teaching in some countries, as this usually does not prepare people for university and life in general, specially in science and maths. Of course, there's always a degree of memorisation in every subject, but I try to keep it to a minimum. This also depends on every student, and I ultimately asses my strategy individually for each student.

Personal Description:
I am an Engineer from an Elite Indian University called Jadavpur University, currently working in a Telecom company at Coventry.
I have been an above average student scoring 98% in Maths and 97% in Science (Physics, Chemistry and Biology) in ICSE which is Indian Equivalent of GCSE.
I have scored 99% in Maths and 92% in Physics in ICSE which is the exam that Indian students take at 18 years of age.

Teaching Experience:

I have taught students from Year 6 till Year 12. I teach almost all science subjects till Year 10, and Physics till Year 12.

Tutoring Approach:

I like to teach student the basic principles first and then help them apply the principles to general stuff they see around. This helps the students to learn while they have fun and helps them to solve their text book problems with more confidence.
Once a chapter is finished, I take comprehension tests before moving to the next chapter.
I can offer lessons both online and I can also come over to the student's place. But I need the students to be disciplined, obedient and punctual.

Personal Description:
I was a statistician for 18 years before returning to teaching seven years ago.

Teaching Experience:

I teach maths one-to-one, in small groups and in whole classes at several secondary schools in Tyne and Wear as well as at further education colleges, covering all ages up to A level.

Tutoring Approach:

I enjoy explaining maths at all levels of ability and get real satisfaction from connecting at the student`s level. I believe I`m good at recognising what that level is and being able to adjust my explanations accordingly. I`m pretty relaxed and like my students to feel comfortable during our sessions. My approach is to identify areas of weakness, explain concepts from basics, then do some questions till confidence is achieved.

I am a recently retired Clinical Scientists (registered). I am married with a son and I am a youthful 67 year old with an 8 years old son! We are a non smoking family. My involvement with "mathematics", at various levels, dates back to when I left secondary school (Blackpool) in 1964 and worked for the Civil Service for 5 years. I was in an accounts division and passed two additional maths (and eventually English!) O'Levels via evening classes as well as enjoying the 60s and playing bass guitar in local groups. I took a 1 year full time A''Level course (Maths, Further Maths and Physics) and subsequently read for a Mathematics degree (Physics subsid.) at the University of Nottingham (1970-73). During this time, I had 3 vacation studentships with different departments of the Scientific Civil Service. After graduating, I worked for around 15 years as a computer programmer / analyst during which time I passed an HND in Computer Studies (University of the South Bank, London). Although I was 40 years old when I was made redundant from a communications company, I decide to make a significant career change and return to my "roots" and look for scientific work where my mathematical skills would be better used. After 2 years as a Medical Laboratory Scientific Officer in the lung function laboratory at the Royal Brompton, I had the tools and experience to apply for a research post in Paediatric Respiratory Medicine at the Royal Post Graduate Medical School (RPGMS, Hammersmith Hospital).

I retired in 2014 after 25 years as a researcher / Clinical Scientist at the RPGMS and Royal London. A large part of my research involved mathematical analysis of breathing patterns and flow-volume curves. This involved developing techniques and algorithms for alternative methods of assessing "lung function". I published many papers in international medical journals and all included a significant maths / stats content. During this time, I took evening classes obtaining additional A' Levels in Biology, Chemistry and Statistics and then read for an M Sc in General Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at Kings College London. In 2005, my portfolio was reviewed by the Health Professions Council and I registered as Clinical Scientist, which is a protected title, The main reason for the additional qualifications was my passion for learning and the thrill of sitting examinations and testing myself. The addition A'Levels and M. Sc. were taken for the challenge and pleasure and were not directly relevant to my career. One important reason for offering private tuition is my love of teaching / learning and I miss my close involvement with the "sciences". I have been accepted as a Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) ambassador and I have an enhanced DBS check certificate.

Teaching Experience:

Although, I do not have formal teaching qualification and I only started offering private tuition at the beginning of 2015, I am a patient person who has tutored a range of tutees from Common Entrance Exam level to adult learner including CGSE students for both Mathematics and Statistics.

However, my "teaching" roles / experiences go back to the mid 60s helping friends struggling with the Civil Service maths entrance exams and later, post graduation, I taught maths, unpaid, to several children of friends as well as adult friends and colleagues who needed to obtain better qualification. My research positions included (i) formal teaching / lecturing roles at all levels e.g. work experience students, medical / nursing students, visiting medics, junior members of the lab staff as well as registrars and consultants; (ii) presenting the research at local, national and international meetings and (iii) giving guest lectures on B. Sc. and M Sc. courses.

In my research / technical support work, I found particular pleasure explaining to children and parents the purpose and science that underpinned the tests and the analysis and interpretation of the results. This was a unique experience for almost all of them. It gave them and me a lot of pleasure and improved the success problems. In my own time, I helped patients, some who missed a lot of school time due to their problems, with both school work in the sciences and others with projects related to the maths and biology of their respiratory problems. Invariably, they ended up knowing more than their teachers!

Tutoring Approach:

As George Orwell never said "All tutees are not the same but some are more different than others".

I have a variety of approaches, depending on factors such as (i) whether the tutee needs teaching or revision; (ii) the number of lessons the tutee can fit in before the exam; (iii) their strengths and weaknesses, as well as their interests; (iv) whether the tutee is struggling to keep up or a flyer needing to ensure an A* (v) the length of the sessions 45-90 mins and whether it is one or two session a week and (vi) the work they are able to do between sessions.

However, there are aspects that are common to all tutees: before starting the lessons, I am happy to meet for a chat (no charge) to spend as long as necessary clarifying important issue such as (i) which board, level and paper they will be sitting; (ii) the text book they use and which parts of the syllabus have been covered and whether any need revising or explaining and (iii) wherever possible, obtaining suggestions and feedback from their teachers including where marks had been lost in recent exams.

Other aspects of my approach include (i) the tutee attempting appropriate questions / papers from other boards to encourage and foster "thinking outside the box" and, thus, to be prepared for questions that do not fit the usual mode; (ii) e-mailing questions of papers in advance of session to allow adequate time for preparation; (iii) feeding back how sessions have gone and suggestions for changes and being available between session via e-mail; (iv) moving up and down the difficulty ladder depending on the progress; (v) working on exam technique and teaching how to not misinterpret questions, sometimes, badly written; (vi) preparing tutees for difficult topics about to be taught at school, to ensure they get the most out of upcoming lessons; (vii) using examples from everyday life to demonstrate the use and usefulness of maths and statistics outside of the classroom and (viii) building up confidence and aiming to engender a passion and love of the subject and learning, in general.

I make extensive use of marking schemes and examiners reports to discuss how the tutee may have obtained the correct answer but lost marks due to not showing their working or lost time providing irrelevant details and this has been very successful and interesting for the tutees.

Some of my feedback:
(i) As a Year 11 student, Peter has been providing me with extra mathematics tuition during the final months before my GCSE examinations, offering distinct, concise teaching within a relaxed but highly enjoyable and yet professional environment. As a mathematician, Peter has aided me in approaching mathematics from a somewhat more lateral perspective, exploring multiple methods that could be employed to solve a challenging question; a form of thinking that is seldom used within a typical school environment. Peter's abundant, infectious passion for both his tuition and mathematics manifests itself within his unswerving support and guidance during our sessions together, delivering a uniquely engaging teaching environment within which to learn, but most importantly, to enjoy learning mathematics!"

(ii) Parent of a Year 11 school girl: Hello Peter, thank you for your follow up, your emails always have an interesting flair about them. We also enjoyed our meeting and Ebony particularly liked your relaxed approach to the subject, for that reason alone I think she would benefit from being able to ask questions without feeling awkward about what she doesn't understand, most importantly I agree with your 'spades a spade' philosophy in how to interpret the syllabus into the real world.

(iii) Teacher's reply to an e-mail from the mother of a Common Entrance school boy: Thank you for your email. I am pleased Edward has a good tutor and is happy doing extra Maths. The best paper to prepare Edward for our end of year test would be a practice SATs test as they follow a similar format to ours.

(iv) A recent GCSE student, EDEXCEL Higher, via his mother: Peter, I obtained and A in my Stats paper and B in my maths paper and I was told by my teacher that it might be worth remarking, as I was only several marks away from the A Grade)

Consulting the 'breakdown' of my overall Mathematics grade, it appears as though I (thanks to your support) did exceptionally well within the non-calculator paper (the equivalent of a very high A/ very low A* in terms of marks), but it was simply a few questions at the end of the calculator paper (that seemed to baffle everyone, regardless of ability) that partially pushed my overall grade down.

Once again, thank you for all of your support and guidance; I certainly would not have been able to achieve my result within the NON-calculator paper, the paper that I claimed was more intimidating, without our sessions within the Library. You have improved not only my proficiency, but also my confidence in Maths enormously and for that I cannot thank you enough.

(v) Father of a schoolgirl (EDEXCEL Higher): "E" did very well overall and passed all 13 ! In Maths she was one point off a B so of course that's a C. I think we will request a remark for the maths paper. Many thanks again for your help in the past, best wishes.
