| Personal Description: I have a dual background in Electrical Engineering and Psychology and retired in 2007 after 20 years as a University lecturer. At different stages in my career I taught both Psychology and Software Engineering/Artificial Intelligence. For relaxation I listen to jazz and blues. |
Teaching Experience: I have been tutoring since March 2008 and am able tooffer maths, physics and ICT from primary up to 'A' level, general science (biology, chemistry, and physics) up to GCSE level, and psychology at 'A' level and university level. A number of my tutees have been following courses in IGCSE Maths or Science or the IB in Maths or Physics. I am familiar with the 11+ exam requirements of Bromley, Bexley, and Kent education authorities and have assisted a number of pupils with their preparation for the exam. (In the absence of this category in the Subject list, my fee for 11+ preparation is 23/hour and for 13+ (Common Entrance) 25/hour.) My specialist areas in psychology at university level are developmental psychology, cognitive psychology, personality and intelligence, and research methods. I am a chartered psychologist and can carry out educational and psychological assessments of both children and adults who are experiencing learning or language difficulties (however, I do not undertake remedial teaching). |
Tutoring Approach: Consider it important to assess the pupil's needs, strengths, and weaknesses carefully at the outset in order to develop a set of goals based on this assessment. Aim to provide well-structured and clearly presented instruction, which if the pupil is able and well-motivated will generally lead to progress. If the pupil is poorly motivated and/or has acquired unhelpful learning habits then may need to vary the approach in order to re-engage their interest and/or find a level at which they can perform successfully, and then build on this accomplishment. |

| Personal Description: My name is Mikayla and I have been teaching for 3 years now in primary schools. I had year 5 for 2 years and year 3 for 1 year and am currently a PPA teacher teaching Reception to year 6. In addition to my teaching experience, I have plentiful amounts of experience working with children and young people. In the past I have worked as a nanny and childminder. |
Teaching Experience: I have a breadth of teaching experience having taught in a variety of different primary and secondary schools across London, Kent and East Sussex. In 2010, I undertook international placements and have experience working with a variety of different pupils in varied settings including primary schools, international middle schools, pupil referral units and centres which cater for children with special educational needs. I have references and a current CRB check which you are more than welcome to have a copy of. |
Tutoring Approach: My approach in teaching varies according to the young person I am tutoring. I believe in an individual support programme which is catered around the needs of the individual. All children and young people learn in different ways, some preferring practise, others preferring more practical demonstrations. Much of my tutoring will be through encouraging the child to think about the subject from different perspectives. Whilst teaching cannot avoid scenario's where children will have to listen - I try to ensure that activities are selected which carefully match the needs of the tutee. I believe the best results are achieved when you know the child and their interests; once this professional relationship has been established, future sessions can be planned for considering the child or young persons interests. For example, one of the children I tutor needed support in his writing, his parents were concerned with his understanding of different texts (fiction, non-fiction, reports etc). It is common for boys to be unenthused by writing so I found out that his passion was in sports and football (surprise surprise!) It wasn't long before this young lad was looking through information texts about football and reading newspaper articles about his favourite football team. This provided the perfect opportunity to discuss which components of the text provided what information; this was then linked to the features of reports, recounts, information texts etc. |

| Personal Description: I am an undergraduate studying Engineering Science at the University of Oxford. I have recently completed my first year of study of a four-year course, gaining a distinction in the process. My academic results have been consistently excellent, providing me with a firm understanding of my chosen subjects. I enjoy engaging people with new and potentially challenging ideas, encouraging them to progress academically. The exchange of ideas between tutor and tutee is something that I particularly enjoy and continue to focus on. |
Teaching Experience: My most notable tutoring experience was tutoring a young person, in Key Stage 3, in their studies for four to six hours a week for about two years. I was paid to tutor in all his subjects and my work mostly consisted of expanding on the syllabus, reviewing his homework and preparing him for tests. The tutee was not of English origin and a significant part of my work included improving his English. The pupil achieved top set for all his subjects as well as consistently high grades. Secondly, I have gained tutoring experience overseeing a group of around twenty male pupils in Key Stage 2 and 3, providing constructive help with their homework and classwork. This was done for one hour per week for approximately six months as part of a Duke of Edinburgh Silver Award. A key part of this experience was keeping the boys on task and focused. Thirdly, I spent two years in the RAF Combined Cadet Force during sixth form where I rose to the rank of Sergeant. As a senior cadre, I was expected to do numerous presentations to the cadets informing them on the ethics, workings and history of the RAF as well as some of the principles of flight and navigation. This particularly provided me with great confidence to not only engage a variety of people but also communicated difficult and at times relatively dry subjects. |
Tutoring Approach: My approach to tutoring is fundamentally based on incentive and reward. I believe a small bribe of chocolate biscuits, gold stars etc. can go a long way towards motivating the tutee. I also aim to provide inventive exercises for the pupil, for example, with my young male tutee an exercise in learning vocabulary would be turned into some sort of game, typically with a small competitive element added in. Ultimately, I wish for the tutee to gain an interest in a particular field of study and by presenting topics in an interesting light I feel they are able to do so. |

| Personal Description: I am a Spanish guy 35 years old. I am bachelor degree in philosophy, and I have studied it at the universities of Valencia (Spain), Birmingham and Sheffield (uk). I have recently got a diploma in teaching Spanish as foreign language at Instituto Cervantes of Leeds. Instituto Cervantes is the equivalent in Spain to the British Council in England. I have also made a postgraduate course on pedagogy skills. I really like teaching. I want that the student got the command of both, the content of the subject and of the method and skills to study it by himself. I support my classes with on-line material and I am able to contact by e-mail. |
Teaching Experience: I am currently teaching Spanish in tutorials to several students in Chesterfield, who are happy with my teaching. I can provide their email adreeses if you wanted references. I taught Spanish culture and history of Spanish art to international students from the State University of New York at a centre of international studies in Valencia, Spain.I have as well taught in tutorials from 2006 in the subjects of Spanish, Catalan and English languages. I give support lessons to students from 8 to 20 years old in these last subjects and in the fields of philosophy, history, literature and humanities. I have also taught in a Secondary school in Valencia, Spain, teaching history, English language and social sciences to students from 13 to 18 years old. |
Tutoring Approach: When I tutoring I wanted to check the deficencies of the student, and then solve them by working together, making the student to get the skills to be able to be further by himself. I tried to support the class with on-line and interactive exercises, and depndeing on the student´s age, make the class more or less funny. I am able as well to answer questions and correct exercises by e-mail |

| Personal Description: I am an English student at the University of Warwick with a keen interest in working with young people. I am passionate about all areas of Literature and History, and have been consistent throughout my academic career in obtaining excellent results. I enjoy reading, editing and writing, both from a creative and academic standpoint, and have gained considerable skill at essay writing over the years. I am well used to working with children of all ages and I am a keen and reliable tutor, able to adapt my teaching methods to suit the needs of each parent/tutee. |
Teaching Experience: I have spent a year doing community service working with young children in early development stage, and have spent additional time assisting with the essay writing of my peers at Secondary School and at University. I also have experience helping younger family members with homework from the ages of 5+. Currently I am teaching AS Level English and History, but am hoping to increase my experience. |
Tutoring Approach: For GCSE level students or higher, I would advise looking at the module and exam specification requirements and create a suitable work-plan with the tutee from there. For younger children (up to 14+) who need assistance with homework and studies, I am more flexible, and would create my work-plan around the needs of the child/ren. |

| Personal Description: I am an experienced teacher of both classics and modern languages, and have taught in a variety of secondary schools. I have stopped classroom teaching now because of the demands of a young family but I am a passionate linguist and am keen to carry on teaching in a different capacity. I have lived abroad for prolonged periods in France and Italy. |
Teaching Experience: Secondary schools, both private and state; Latin, Greek and French from beginners to A level and Oxbridge; Italian to GCSE. |
Tutoring Approach: Successful language teaching should combine a fun approach using oral practice including song lyrics and games with a more structured approach to grammar; this gives the student confidence that they really understand the language used. |

| Personal Description: I was raised up in the environment where foreign languages have been always present. Since I was at young age, I have already started giving lessons of Portuguese and French. At that time I came to believe that I was destined to become a teacher. As a matter of fact, my passion comes from a family tradition: my mother, a lawyer, is also a Portuguese teacher specialized in legal language. My grandfather, in turn, was a Portuguese and Latin teacher. What is more, I inherited after him an intense fascination for French culture. At age of nineteen, having passed one year in Paris, I was accepted as a BA student of French literature at the University of Brasilia. While I was studying at the last year, I taught French as a student teacher in the School of Foreign Languages, which was within my university programme. In that way I became a professional French teacher the following year. Simultaneously, I devoted myself to teaching French and Portuguese to young candidates to Rio Branco Academy, the Institute responsible for the formation of future diplomats of Brazil. Having completed my BA studies, I left for France once again. That time I went to the north of the country, in order to teach Portuguese in two high schools in the region. In so doing, I had the opportunity to improve the knowledge of French and revive my passion for the culture of France. By means of UKtutors, I would like to obtain a new experience in teaching - this time in Anglophone area - and learn from my future students simultaneously. In effect, according to the words of one of the greatest Lusophone writers, Graciliano Ramos, "a master is someone who teaches and suddenly comes to learn". * Apart from Brazilian nationality, I have also Italian nationality so I am eligible to work in the UK. |

| Personal Description: I am a confident, diligent and sociable person, with a wide knowledge of world history, and specialising in American and South-East Asian history and culture. I hold a double first class Bachelors degree in History and American Studies from Canterbury Christ Church University, and have had many years experience leading youth projects such as youth councils, young persons' scrutiny forums (YPSF) and have acted as a liasion on several historical and cultural preservation projects such as the Standing Advisory Council on Religious Education (SACRE) and the Church House Preservation Committee. |
Teaching Experience: I have previous experience as a teaching assistant to KS3 and KS4 level history at a state secondary school. |
Tutoring Approach: I take a holistic approach to the teaching of history, ensuring that the student becomes engaged within a fuller understanding of the period being studied. As a former student and teach of history, I realise that the principal block to a tutee's understanding of historical concepts is a lack of immersion within the relevant time-frames and thus an inability to fully comprehend why certain actions were taken, and the wider effect this had. Thus in my approach I am firm believer that it is as important for every student to understand to a higher level than that offered by the current state curriculum the context of the period they are studying. As a consequence I offer tailored introductions to said period's culture, economy, religious and political setting, and even physical geography. Furthermore, I offer the necessary skills to craft this knowledge into well-reasoned, informed essays. My intimate knowledge of the state education system and beyond has imbued me with the ability to gauge how assignments will be assessed and thus I can work with students not only on improving their knowledge, but showcasing this in highly-marked, structured and coherent written forms. I use a number of methods to achieve this, including homework assignments, but also using character adoption, audio-visual aids and a mixture of written and verbal questions of varying length and form. |

| Personal Description: I am a Quality Assurance Officer for a Pharmaceutical Company in Reading. Before this I was a Secondary School Science Teacher for a year. I have a PGCE specialising in all the sciences and a BSc (Hons) in Chemistry. I have A-levels in Biology, Chemistry and Maths. I also tutored a student 1-to-1 as part of my PGCE. I live in Caversham and am willing to take students from anywhere in the Reading Area. |
Teaching Experience: As a teacher I taught KS3 Science (11 - 14 years old), GCSE Chemistry, GCSE Biology, GCSE Physics and BTEC Science Level 2. I still have all the resources from my teaching days and access to more. I was also an exam marker for GCSE Chemistry last year. |
Tutoring Approach: When I tutored before I we first worked out the tutee's learning style and then ajusted the tutoring session around that. I am flexible and focus on the areas the tutee is not as strong in or mirror and add to what they are covering in class. My experience in the Pharmaceutical Industry will also enable to show how the theory they learn relates to the real world. |
