I have always loved learning languages and am very much a 'people person', which is why I decided to become an English teacher after leaving university. Even now, after over 20 years' experience, I am delighted that I am still learning new things about English language and teaching.

Teaching Experience:

My teaching experience has mostly been of adults and young adults (16 - 55) in small groups or one to one classes. For many years I taught English as a Foreign Language at Bell International London, and before that for the British Council in Italy (Milan and Rome) and Malaysia (Kuala Lumpur). I have also taught on pre-sessional and in-sessional courses at Queen Mary, University of London. My students have been at all levels and from a wide variety of cultures.

My approach to teaching is very student-centred. We first discuss which language aspects my students want to improve and their previous language learning experience. Following education at an ordinary comprehensive school, I graduated with a first-class masters degree from Magdalen College, Oxford. I was awarded a scholarship as an undergraduate for attaining excellent exam results. At school, I achieved the highest possible grade in all subjects I teach, including:

- Straight A's in Maths, Further Maths and Physics at A-Level
- A in Chemistry at AS-Level
- A*'s in all subjects I tutor at GCSE-Level

There are two key aspects to achieving in academia: learning techniques to pass exams and having a genuine interest in the subject. I believe that I can help with both.

By ensuring that I am well prepared for each lesson, I aim to simplify parts of the syllabus that the student is finding difficult and if necessary, teach in a number of different ways to aid understanding. I can help produce a revision plan for those students who are taking exams to ensure that all the material is covered in time.

The subjects I teach are fascinating, they just need to be taught in the right way. The school curriculum can appear a little dull at times but I hope that with the experience I have gained in a number of interesting environments, including working with the McLaren F1 team and in running my own electronics business where maths and science were essential, I can bring subjects to life in a way that shows their real value.

One of the great joys of tutoring is that every student is different - I love tailoring my approach to get the best out of every tutee.

Hi, my name is Imogen and I'm 21 years old. I am a third year undergraduate student at the University of Kent and have just returned from my year abroad in Paris. I study French, with modules in International Relations, Politics and German. I previously studied the International Baccalaureate instead of A Levels and whilst doing this tutored a 16 year old girl in GCSE French - she went from a C to an A with just simple tutoring of the basics. My final grades for my first year included French grammar grade being a 72 (1st) and all other modules receiving above 62, with a 70 in International History and International Relations.
My year abroad was spent with a French company, improving my French by being surrounded by solely French speakers! I returned from working and living in the French language feeling hugely confident in my foreign language abilities across all disciplines (listening, reading, writing and speaking).
I believe that I have a friendly approach to tutoring.

Teaching Experience:

As previously mentioned, I tutored a 16 year old girl in GCSE French. Over the 9 month period, we improved on her basic grammar skills and reading and listening skills also. As well as this, I have helped (not necessarily tutored, but essentially, tutored) several friends at different subjects that we both studied, particularly GCSE History and IB Biology Standard. I have a brother who sat his GCSEs in June 2013 and as most of our subjects were the same, I tutored him and tested him often in the subjects that I took at IB. From this site, which I joined in December 2012, I gained one student very quickly and during our 4 months tutoring sessions, she improved her basic understanding tremendously, progressing from a D to a B for her oral exam in April.

Tutoring Approach:

In terms of my approach to tutoring, I like to assess what the tutee finds difficult and try and work in a different way to how they are accustomed to to see if it helps at all. I draw a lot from my experiences as a student as I have found the ways in which I have been taught very easy to understand. I would like to say that my approach is a lot more suited to children because, like them, I am a student too and I understand what they are coping with and how their mind works. Listening is of key importance and I make sure that I listen to what my tutee is trying to say.

I have been told that I am an inspirational and motivating teacher. I love people and am passionate about my work which I manage to incorporate into an exciting yet balanced life. My fourteen year old son, Charlie, attends our nearest Steiner school in Garlinge Green where he is very happy, I am delighted to say!

Teaching Experience:

I have been to Art College and also studied the four year BA in education at Christchurch in Canterbury, qualifying in 1994. I am therefore a qualified primary school teacher. I taught in several different primary schools before taking on a position as a drama teacher in a local secondary school. ( I have always been excited about all subjects and thus very happy to teach anything and everything!)

I was Head of Art at a local prep school for seven years, a super job, which I thoroughly enjoyed. I have spent a few years teaching children with special needs which also gave me tremendous satisfaction, especially with regards to the social development of the children.

I am now working as a supply teacher as the flexibility suits my lifestyle perfectly.

Tutoring Approach:

Working with a person on a one to one basis is a luxury that has so many advantages. Unless, it has to be said, you are learning hockey skills, or something similar! Time is valuable and expensive, so, although relaxed, I am keenly aware that there is a lot of work that can be accomplished in one hour... the sense of satisfaction gained from work done, progression and obvious good results lead to a huge surge in confidence. It is my belief that it doesn't matter what area/field this is, only that it takes place, again, age is irrelevant too, five or fifty five, success is success and it makes us happy!

My approach to tutoring aims to build confidence in the learners and work with them, rather than lecturing to them. I generally tend to show students the steps and procedures that will lead them to make their own discoveries independently, so that they will be able to study autonomously in the future. As I learnt from my Celta course I plan lessons in advance, but I adjust to meet special learning needs and the the pace of work of students as I become aware of them.
I strongly believe that a tutor should relate to students as an equal, not someone superior.
I tend to show appreciation and praise whenever the student is doing well in order to encourage but also to prepare tasks that are challenging for the learner.
To finish, I would add that my naturally enthusiastic personality helps me to maintain a positive attitude throughout the process of teaching which is most beneficial for the student.

I left school with one A* grade, six A grades and four B's. A's being in English, Biology and Geography. I was also a prefect in school chosen for my level of drive.

During sixth form I was a student mentor where I helped GCSE students with their upcoming exams and acted as a person of support and welfare. I studied law achieving an A*, sociology achieving an A and psychology achieving a B grade.

I'm currently a third year psychology student at the University of Birmingham. During my time at university I have gained an in depth background knowledge in psychology including child and educational psychology. I hope to start a career in child psychology because I love interacting with children. My aim as a tutor is to build a good relationship to ensure that the child is comfortable as I find this the most rewarding for success.

Most importantly I think that tutoring should be enjoyable for children as this helps to keep focus.
My Tutoring sessions will often include practising questions and word games. I like to set a small amount of homework each week to ensure the children are gaining an understanding.

I worked as a trainer, programme leader and module coordinator in the courses on IT Strategy and Management, Global Business and Sustainable Management, Business Administration, Organizational Development, Public Sector Management and Research Methods (Qualitative & Quantitative), supervising & managing research projects, (re)developing curricula for eLearning, producing course syllabi and designing evaluation methods together with colleagues and support staff in various UK and European universities.

Teaching Experience:

I am competent in most subjects within Management and Economics programmes and have extensive experience in thesis and assignment supervision, research guidance as well as academic writing.

MSc Dissertation in Project Management with A. - I worked with A. to help her with her MSc Dissertation in Project Management. I clarified the key issues and concepts, helped her develop a plan and a reading as well as reference list. Tutored her academic writing skills and coached her throughout the entire process. She was almost sure she would have failed, yet not only she ended up enjoying the time dedicated to her dissertation, but she also achieved a merit.

MSc dissertation in Economics with I. - I. was confused about the literature and the research for his course work and dissertation, he was also worried about his writing style. With regular sessions with me, I. gained the understanding and tools to improve his research and writing and submit his course work dissertation on time.

Research Methods (MBA dissertation) with P. - I helped P. prepare a first class approach for the research methodology of his MBA dissertation and to identify articles in arabic that were relevant for his topic.

BSc, Project Management Essay with J. - J. was under intense time pressure to deliver his project management essay and prepare for his exams at the same time. I worked with him two days in a row so that he could achieve high results in both.

BSc, Management, Accounting & Economic Philosophy assignments tuition with T. - T. is a hard working student from China. Unfortunately, his brilliance and knowledge was not emerging following his first essay results. Working with him 2/4 hours per week for 4 months, T. is now confident again he can truly express his knowledge and get the results he deserves.

BSc, Microeconomics tuition with H. - I worked with H., a native English speaker understand the way to approach and revise for her micro-economics module. She requested one week of intense online tuition, albeit the exam was imminent in one month. H. has now successfully completed the module

BSc, Advanced Economics Subjects, Econometrics (essay based) with V. - I worked 2 and half months giving V. 2-5 hours of tuition every day to prepare for his exams and coursework. V. learning needs had to be tailored to his special needs: being a dyslexic student I had to stimulate his learning ability and memory skills using visual aids and ad hoc examples. Even if the subjects were highly technical he benefited immensely from my dedicated approach, exclusive to him.

MBA dissertation with H. - H. was a full-time working mum of two children with special needs and had very little time to complete her MBA dissertation which was due in two months when we started. Working evenings and weekends with me H. was able to complete and submit her thesis on time and still thanks me for it!

BSc, Economic Development, Regulation, Business & Management with S. - I gave S. tutoring in three final year BSc subjects helping him increase his grades and better plan for his revision in order to use her time well.

PhD Management tutoring with K. - K. is one of my current tutees studying for a PhD in management. We have highly intellectual sessions on his research progress and he consults with me regularly on all aspects of his PhD studies.

Economic Development BSc exam preparation with J. - J. needed to discuss his understanding of the module to better prepare for his exam. He requested me to have regular questions and answers sessions one a week for two weeks with him so that any knowledge gaps could be filled. Our tutorials helped him relieve the stress and anxiety of the exam preparation.

Personal Description:
I am a 22-years-old Belgian currently studying Youth Work and Community Development in Hull. I am looking for a job to fund my studies, and French being my first language made tutoring appear to be a perfect opportunity.
I am also in an international organisation geared towards youth aged 11+, and enjoy every moment of working with them. I have been exposed to and trained in various teaching methods, and am very aware of learning styles and needs.
Having learned four languages to different extents over the past 6 years, I do understand the challenges one can face when it comes to speaking, writing, reading, and simply understanding a foreign language.
I have been reading a lot since I was a child, which means I know a lot of French literature from early childhood, to young adults, to classics and adults books.

Teaching Experience:

I have been trained in the different learning styles and teaching approaches.
I have tutored before, helping children with their French homework.
I have been tutored myself, in several languages, and have asked my tutors questions about their teaching styles so I could use them myself later in life.

Tutoring Approach:

I am very aware that each individual has their own learning style, and I am able to accommodate to each person's needs.

While grammar is important, I believe languages are much more than that, they carry a culture and I use that to make the learning interesting and entertaining. I have advised many of my friends wanting to learn French to watch series and movies, listen to certain songs, read some books, as I believe this is a much more engaging way to learn a language.

Having learned different languages myself, I can use my own experience to help someone learn the French language, with all its exceptions and irregularities. I understand that different age groups have different interests and learning styles, and I make sure to use the right approach for each individual.

Should there be specific needs and standards to meet, such as exams and tests, or homework, I make sure to be informed and aware of these so we can work towards a specific goal.
