I have 20 years of experience in publishing as a writer and editor and am passionate about nurturing English language skills and a love of English literature. I graduated from the University of Stirling with an honours degree in English Literature and have also taught English as a foreign language. My experience in publishing has trained me to write concisely and economically while retaining an imaginative grasp on a piece of work, a skill invaluable in writing essays and examination answers; and especially useful in assisting students with the new written assessments that, in Higher English, from 2016, comprise 30 per cent of the final examination mark.

I can empathise with students who are tussling with English, relish improving a person's understanding and enjoyment of the subject and take satisfaction from helping to develop their abilities not only in the practical sense of improving their powers of analysis and understanding of texts but in helping them think imaginatively and creatively. As a personal tutor, I have a proven record of upgrading students' performances, especially at Higher level, and have, in several instances, improved so dramatically pupils who were on course to fail Higher English that they went on to achieve an 'A' grade in their Higher examination.

Teaching Experience:

I have five years' tutoring experience. In 2012, 65 per cent of my tutees for Higher English achieved an 'A' grade, with several Band 1s among them. In the 2013 Higher English examination, 75 per cent of my tutees obtained either an A or a B, with slightly more than half of those obtaining an A and several obtaining a distinction in doing so. In 2012 and 2013, all of my tutees at Standard Grade achieved either a band 1 or a Band 2. Similarly, in 2014, all National 5 students achieved an A or a B. At Higher, in 2014, 85 per cent of tutees achieved an A or a B, with the remainder, several of whom had been struggling severely, delighted to have achieved a pass. In 2015, 85 per cent of my tutees achieved an A in their Higher, Sixth Year Studies and National 5 examinations. The other 15 per cent achieved a B.

With my help, tutees have obtained the vital English qualification that was essential to them obtaining a place at such universities as: Cambridge, Oxford, Aberdeen, Dundee, St Andrews, Heriot-Watt, Edinburgh, Stirling, Strathclyde, Glasgow and the Glasgow College of Art.

I also have experience teaching English as a Foreign Language, in Egypt, both in private schools and in tutoring young people on an individual basis.

In publishing, I was frequently chosen to tutor new entrants to the profession because of my precise use of language and empathetic nature on a one-to-one level.

I studied English Literature to honours level at the University of Stirling and aim to pass on my love of the subject to students through establishing a rapport with them and recommending to them the type of literature that would complement their learning and enable them to derive pleasure from studying English.

Tutoring Approach:

On first meeting, I will discuss with the student how they wish to improve and which aspects of their English studies they feel require greatest attention. I will adapt tutorials to suit the student's needs and course of study. Additional exercises and study guides will be developed together, so that the student can participate with enthusiasm and purpose in the tutorials. This allows me to work to the student's strengths, to help them manage their problem areas more effectively and to derive greater enjoyment from the subject. I will adopt a measured approach and will use my communication skills to ensure that the student understands and absorbs each aspect of the lesson before progressing to the next stage. I aim to make lessons pleasurable and fun as a means of making learning easier, enjoyable and more memorable.

I am a qualified flying instructor so I am very experienced in providing one-to-one tuition to students with a range of abilities and I have been trained to teach in a difficult environment (an aircraft).

I am a twenty-seven year-old graduate, currently studying for a PhD in History at Queen Mary University of London.

I am young, enthusiastic, and have excellent communication skills. I have lived in London for two years, and in my spare time I enjoy football, playing the guitar and reading about history.

Teaching Experience:

Throughout my academic career I have engaged in mentoring and tutoring schemes. During my A levels I tutored a number of pupils through their History GCSEs, and at university I was a volunteer mentor for first year students, helping them to structure their studies and get through exams during a particularly challenging time.

As part of my PhD programme, I teach three seminars with first-year undergraduates on a weekly basis on a course about the Anglo-American "special relationship" in the twentieth century.

I have worked as a private tutor for six years. I have lots of experience in tutoring students at GCSE and A Level, and have worked with students with a range of capabilities.

My long-term goal is a career as a lecturer or teacher. I have enjoyed the process immensely whenever I have engaged with students, and want to broaden my experience as much as possible.

Teaching Experience:

I am not a 'qualified' teacher but one through experience. I have qualifications as a Secretarial Linguist. I am a fluent Spanish speaker and my lessons have quite a strong discussion element to them. I have taught adults and GCSE students over the past 20 years, and my successes have been many, but particularly bringing GCSE students successfully through their revision stage and adults gaining more confidence in their spoken Spanish.

Tutoring Approach:

My approach to tutoring is a combination of fun and work. I expect commitment from my students, but also I like to pass on my enthusiasm for Spain and hope that my lessons are enjoyable, not just a hard slog! We speak in Spanish for the majority of the lesson, and I encourage students to 'immerse' themselves into Spain i.e. we have access these days to Spanish radio, Spanish TV. There is absolutely no reason not to use these to the full. I encourage socialising between students where possible also, i.e. Tapas visit/evening or introducing my Spanish friends to them so that they can practise their language skills.

Personal Description:
Hi! I'm an Oxford graduate with a 2:1 in English Language and Literature. I graduated in 2013 and went on to study an MSc in Psychology at Oxford Brookes, in which I achieved a distinction. Since then, I have been working as an administrator and looking for ways to continue to engage with the subjects that interest me. Tutoring appealed to me at once as a rewarding way to put the skills that I learnt during my degree and masters to good use. Reading English at Oxford has honed my critical thinking, analytical abilities and study skills, while my masters has given me experience in data analysis and conducting research. In 2012 I also co-wrote a novel which was recently published in the UK, which really deepened my understanding of how to write effectively. I'd love to tutor others and help them to develop these skills too! In my spare time, I like to read and write fiction. My main address is in AL7, but I am also happy to tutor in Barnet and the surrounding area. As well as tutoring, I also specialise in editing, copy-editing and proofreading academic essays, job applications and CVs, and articles.

Teaching Experience:

I have successfully completed an assessment for the selective tutoring agency Blue Tutors. During the assessment I had to demonstrate my tutoring ability to a trained assessor, who described my communication skills as 'excellent'.
In my final term at Oxford, I volunteered with Schools Plus, a program which runs after school tuition sessions for struggling students in areas of economic disadvantage. I spent half a term working with GCSE English students, tutoring them on an individual basis in the run up to their January modules. As part of the selection process for the program, I also attended tutoring training.
When I was in the 6th form (in 2009), I also volunteered as a classroom assistant in my school. I was working with students who were having difficulty with essay-based subjects like History and English. I worked with two students in their History classes, helping them to understand the work they were set in class and working through it with them. I had to use my knowledge of French to help one student who had not yet learnt to speak fluent English, translating the teacher's instructions for her and helping her with words she did not understand. Between 2009-10, I helped to run two after-school classes for Key Stage 2 pupils, one in Literacy and Art and another in Drama. This involved planning and delivering lessons to classes of about 5-10 children, and keeping them engaged with the topics they were learning through activities designed to both teach and entertain.

Tutoring Approach:

My experience of tutoring in the past has shown me the importance of patience and respect in teaching. Especially in essay-based subjects, it is crucial that a teacher allows their pupils space to develop their own ideas, and respects their independent thought. Learning by rote has only limited usefulness: the best way to excel at a subject is to understand it, so I always explain concepts as fully as possible and move at the tutee's pace, making sure that they have properly grasped each concept or issue before moving on to the next. My Schools Plus training emphasised the idea that the goal of tutoring is to help a student to help themselves, enabling them to tackle problems rather than solving things for them. I think that this is fantastic advice, and it is a rule which I always try to bear in mind when tutoring.

Personal Description:
I am a part time lecturer at Gray's working on the short courses programme. I teach on the Portfolio Building, Drawing and Mixed Media courses. I am shortly to have an exhibition at the Howden Park Centre in Livingston as part of a six month residency. I am Recent graduate of the Slade MFA program and I have been consistently exhibiting since, such as the Creekside open selected by Richard Deacon/Lisa Milroy, the BFA Futures at the Mall gallery, York College and the Zetta Hotel in London. I have also been establishing a drawing and painting workshop at Marymount International school and have given talks on my work and the benefits of doing an MA.

I came to Art in my 30's as a mature student via short courses. This form of education is a great way of developing artists through a different route than more traditional means while opening up opportunities to a diverse field of practitioners. I feel very passionate about education and how it has transformed my own life which has given me fantastic opportunities that I could never have thought of. I believe that art should be for all and that everyone has the potential to be a great artist.

My own work involves drawing from life through strict observation through the genre of still life in. I work in oil, watercolour and acrylic which continues into both portraits and landscapes. With these I explore the relationship between the hand and the eye, nature and culture, the raw and the cooked and how this dichotomy exists in the historical and contemporary art. For example I am interested in the Gesture of the hand in Velazquez, Titian and Tintoretto as apposed to established Renaissance painting which where drawn and then filled with colour. I see a mirror to this in more conceptual art such as Art and Language or Sol Le Witt compared to a gestural painters such as Philip Guston, Morandi or Joan Mitchell.
