Personal Description:
APPOINTMENT SLOTS CURRENTLY AVAILABLE (as of March 2015):
Friday 7pm onwards and holiday times.

As a student, little came easy for me.

I learned the hard way.

Now, with over 20 years of teaching experience in a variety of institutions - from Oxbridge entrance to comprehensives on 'Special Measures' - I am young enough to remember my struggles and old enough to know better.

I know how to bridge that gap for my tutees.

Teaching Experience:

This is my sixth year as a full-time tutor, but I was a secondary school teacher for 19 years before that.

I have experienced many types of academic performance from high-performing grammar schools to comprehensives on 'special measures'. I have held a variety of positions of responsibility within schools, particularly in the pastoral system such as Head of Year. I have been a grade-A examiner for AQA GCSE Geography.

During the last six years of 11 Plus entrance, including September 2014, 15 out of my 25 students have passed. I have also successfully helped one parent and child through the appeals procedure for grammar selection. Furthermore, a 12 Plus tutee in 2011 was the only girl to pass and get a place at South Wilts. Two out of three 12+ and 13+ tutees I have taught have passed their exams.

I have taught numerous syllabi: in the last six years I have tutored AQA, Edexcel, OCR and WJEC at A level Geography. Indeed, I taught the whole of the A2 Edexcel Geogaphy syllabus online to one a tutee in Moscow: he has now gained a place at Aston University. I have mainly tutored the AQA and Edexcel syllabi for GCSE Maths. It would be fair to say that the overwhelming majority of my A level tutees experience significant gains and regularly obtain A or B grades.

At the moment (March 2015) I have 20 tutees in total: this includes 4 home-school tutees doing a variety of subjects such as GCSE Maths and Geography as well as Key Stage 3 Maths, English, History, Geography, Citizenship and RE; three GCSE English tutees; one Key Stage 3 Maths tutee; two Key Stage 3 English tutees; three 12 Plus tutees; five Key Stage 2 Maths tutees; two GCSE Maths tutee; one KS5 numeracy tutee, one A Level Geography tutee and, finally, three GCSE Geography tutees.

I would say on average, across the year, I would have between 15 and 20 tutees each week. Nearer exam time, this can creep up to 25.

Tutoring Approach:

One size does not fit all . . .

Tutoring and learning should be natural and intuitive so that tutees can 'fly' by themselves.

To make the most of tuition, a tutee must be 'on-board'. If it's their idea - even better. A tutee that is in-charge of their own learning makes an excellent pupil.

As a tutor, I decide what is right for the tutee - not an institution. Parents often want someone who is familiar with the education system but independent enough to give an honest assessment. My main concern is the welfare of the tutee - not just their academic progress - nor the reputation of some teacher or institution. If something is not right for a tutee, no matter how forceful a parent might be or how much money I might lose, I simply will not do it. Each year there are a handful of tutees I turn away because of this.

In the first session I will try to identify what it is the tutee needs, and you may wish to quiz me in more detail. I will need access to school reports and examples of the tutee's work. Through discussion with my tutee and parental input it should become clear the reason for the tutoring.

From this 'snag' list, I will design a bespoke program to meet the educational needs of the tutee. It is flexible and, unlike a classroom situation, I can respond immediately to the needs of the tutee.

Homework will always be set, depending upon the demands placed upon the tutee by the normal school week. The tutee will be far more involved with learning than in a normal school class where they can 'hide', so prospective tutees need to expect plenty of chat and discussion, reviewing work and giving feedback.

For learning to be 'on the wing', to be natural and instinctive, tutees need to work hard without feeling the burden. This can only happen through enjoyment and a lot of laughter. That's my part: helping tutees to work really hard without realising it.

If at any point I feel unable to help, I won't just prolong tuition, or if our work has met its aims then I will call a halt. The point of tuition is not to need me anymore, so they can 'fly' all by themselves.

I offer two types of 'remote' tuition options at the moment:

i/ ONLINE FACE-TO-FACE TUITION: face-to-face on Skype is very good in dealing with syllabus issues and reinforcing and filling in the holes the class teachers leave behind. Face-to-face tuition lends itself well to visual resources such as diagrams, maps and pictures. It is primarily discussion-based and the tutee needs to take notes as we go along. I regularly send tutees files to prepare them for the lesson and to discuss in the lesson. If a tutee comes to face-to-face tuition and expects to be spoon-fed or entertained, it just won't work. Extra work can be set to test their written understanding. Usually, it is enough to go through topics the student struggles with. Once they 'click' with the topic/issue, we move onto other areas. Payment for this type of tuition is a flat fee each week to cover lesson preparation and the lesson itself. The marking of substantial pieces of work outside of lesson time such as essays will incur a modest marking fee.

ii/ CORRESPONDENCE-STYLE WITH UNLIMITED EMAIL SUPPORT: work is set through powerpoints, pdf files and word documents for the student to do on their own in their own time. This should keep the tutee occupied for between 1-3 hours each week, unless more is required. It is then returned to me within the week. I mark it and provide feedback in the form of an audio file (up to 30 mins), talking them through the various issues. Any amounts of email conversations to help the student with this particular piece of work are allowed, after feedback has been given. This is very much an ongoing and open-ended commitment, once work has been set and feedback given, and the student is totally free to contact me with any issues. As a result, the payment structure is open-ended and depends on the amount of time used to prepare resources, mark and give audio feedback. This is added up at the end of each week, and the client is then billed. Follow-up emails and support are not timed but are considered as a 'free' part. Generally, this time will be from about 45-90 mins per week. I keep a track of the time minute to minute and endeavour to keep the time used as short as possible while setting about 1-3 hours of work. This is very much a trust system of working. I tailor the work individually to suit the student as opposed to an ordinary correspondence course that just covers syllabus content.

Please be aware that I do charge for travelling over 30 miles (roundtrip: 15 miles each way):
30-40 mile roundtrip - £5
41-50 mile roundtrip - £10
51-60 mile roundtrip - £15
61-70 mile roundtrip - £20

Client Reviews:

'Lisa was honestly the best tutor! She is a highly knowledgeable teacher of Physics and helped my daughter really understand her subject. She was great at explaining everything. She definitely helped my daughter raise her grade GCSE. I would highly recommend Lisa' From Alghamadi, Score 5/5, August 2016 (GCSE Physics)

'Lisa has tutored our daughter for the last two years. When our daughter first began working with Lisa she was working from a below average baseline and had little confidence. What a difference an hour a week with a capable maths tutor makes as our daughter has recently secured a grade B in her GCSE maths -Grade E to Grade B that's some going!! All credit for our daughter's amazing progress goes to Lisa and her patient, friendly, but tenacious teaching style. We are so pleased that we found Lisa, she has been an absolute Godsend! Highly recommended!' From Gail Baker, Score 5/5, August 2016 (GCSE Maths)

'Lisa has supported our daughter with Maths throughout year 11. She made her feel she could ask for help as many times as needed and was always patient and supportive. Our daughter has had several 'eureka' moments with Lisa in which she actually truly understood concepts she has struggled with at school. Lisa definitely motivates her students to believe in themselves and encourages them to reach their full potential. We highly recommend working with Lisa.' From Elly Dolan, Score 5/5, August 2016 (GCSE Maths)

'Absolutely fantastic tutor. Lisa helped me to get 2 A*'s and an A in Maths and science, which allowed me to get into the college I had applied for. 'My daughter has just gained A's in both Physics and Chemistry at GCSE. These are not easy subjects and finding Lisa has made a massive difference. She explains difficult areas and makes the subject become alive and understandable. This has given her confidence and fortunately she covered areas that the school had not and that actually came up in the exam! She has a lovely auora about her and can make anyone feel calm and relaxed and ready to learn. She is a great communicator, organised and efficient and worth her weight in gold! many thanks Lisa', From Tracey, Score 5/5, August 2014 (GCSE Physics and Chemistry)

She is highly intelligent and I soon realised my son was in very professional hands which was very comforting as we drove one hour every week sometimes twice a week to get to her. Lisa has a lovely personality and would make anyone feel comfortable the moment you meet her. Her schedule is extremely busy and she is very much in demand. So don't delay if you want to grab a spot in her diary. A very happy family. Worth every penny.' From Yvette, Score 5/5, September 2014 (GCSE Maths, Physics & Chemistry)

Tutoring Approach:

Academic experience: I have worked in private tutoring, state and private schools, university departments and know how examiners mark and what they expect. I have worked for 2 prestigious Universities and am adept at entrance documents and applications. In addition, one needs to be constantly aware of the changing curricula, mark schemes, and student specifications, knowledge and understanding of which can guarantee a 95%+ grade.

Encouragement: As a sports captain and Global Citizenship Mentor (UCL) I realise the need for a pupil's confidence to be built up before they can achieve better. In my opinion a pupil is never failing, they can just achieve more.

Planning: It is essential for us to have an organised lesson plan, and plan for our future sessions so we can map where we should be heading and what we have achieved. Many students suffer from poor organisation which, if remedied, would immediately proffer far better results.

Education: During my past 8 years of college, undergraduate and graduate university I have been educated in a host of valuable disciplines that help interest and inspire any student.

Personal Description:
I am 32 years old and graduated from Leeds University with a 2:1 degree in Spanish Langauge and Literature with an accredited distinction in speaking. I spent a year in Murcia working for the British Council teaching English to Spanish students aged from 11-17. I am passionate about learning and teaching Spanish and I am keen to use my knowledge and experience to enhance other's language skills. I will tailor my classes to work on any areas of weakness to get the most out of my students and rest assured you will receive a high quality yet fun language lesson.

Teaching Experience:

I have 4 years of tutoring experience to date, I have helped a number of students with A Level and GCSE Exam prep. I privately tutored a student who was not studying Spanish at school just independently with myself and he an A* in GCSE. I am currently tutoring 2 adult learners and a primary school beginner to enhance their speaking skills and I am very keen to work with other students at varying levels.

Previously,I taught English for a year while working for the British Council in Murcia, Spain. This required me to source interesting material for classes, plan and then teach classes of up to 30 students at a time. As the level of english was low in some years I had to direct the entire class in Spanish and work out the best ways to encourage the children to engage in the English Language.

In addition to the language assistant role I also privately tutored 6 students whilst living in Spain, the ages ranged from 11 to an adult learner and each session was tailored to suit their needs.
Whilst at University I completed a City and Guilds Professional Development Award in Education, this required working on a mentoring programme with a GCSE student and documenting their progress.

Tutoring Approach:

I aim to tailor my lessons to suit the learner, I will complete an assessment prior to starting the tutoring and work together with the student to identify potential areas of improvement. I am keen to pass on my Spanish Language knowledge and work with students to improve grammatical accuracy. I take great care and attention in lessons plans and aim to create a fun and positive learning experience.

Teaching Experience:

For over 8 years I have been teaching English, Literacy and Reading from in and out of my own home.

Tutoring Approach:

My aim is to help each student reach their potential through tailored lessons designed to build confidence as well as make learning enjoyable. I have a strong belief that for people of all ages, learning can be fun, and if you enjoy the process, you are much more likely to learn something!

I am extremely enthusiastic when it comes to teaching. There is nothing I enjoy more than seeing a student achieve what they set out to do, be it a particular grade they need to obtain or a skill they need to develop. Often lessons tend to last a little longer than the initial hour as I am simply not in this for the money- my satisfaction comes from watching my students achieve and I don't mind eating into my own time by a few more minutes to make sure that happens.

Due to several requests from current and former students, I am now also happy to discuss teaching other subjects outside of English. Please simply give me a call to discuss this.

Testimonials:

'David is extremely hard working and one of the most enthusiastic people we've seen when it comes to teaching. It quickly got to the point where our son was looking forward to his lessons and was disappointed when when we had to reschedule the odd one. Would def recommend.'

-Mohammed, Father of Hassan

'Really happy with David's work. Got results and lessons seemed to be very creative.'

-Janet, Mother of Luke

'Let me start off by saying that I was embarrassed to approach a tutor at first. I have had reading and writing difficulties since I was very young but David ensured full anonymity and built my confidence to a very high level. He has been teaching me once a week for 2 years now. I have learnt more than I ever did at school in a much shorter space of time.'

I hold a 2:1 BA Hons in English Literature from Lancaster University, and a Cert. TESOL from Trinity College London.

Since completing my TESOL certificate in late 2013 I have worked as a teacher for Accord-ISS, one of the UK's leading EFL providers, and I currently work as a proofreader for Masters students at Cambridge University.

Teaching Experience:

In the last 2 years I have taught a wide variety of age groups, from pre-school and primary children up to adults, and I have taught both one-to-one and with larger groups.

Tutoring Approach:

I am a friendly tutor; I pride myself on my ability to listen to my clients and I work hard to make sure they feel relaxed and engaged in my lessons. The aim is always to help them achieve progress that will really benefit them as individuals.

I use a variety of materials and techniques to make sure that students absorb and retain what we've covered in each lesson. Creativity is one of my biggest strengths, and I enjoy using film clips, pictures, audio clips and practical activities to help my students improve their English.

Personal Description:
I am a graduate of the University of London (SOAS) with a degree in Korean Language and History. I am 42 years old and married with one daughter.

Teaching Experience:

I enjoy teaching and I have four years experience tutoring English and Maths at primary level as well as three years teaching in a classroom. My daughter has recently passed her 11+ so I am familiar with the requirements to pass these exams, as well as the stress parents feel in the build up to the exams. I have a good knowledge of the local schools and application procedures.

Tutoring Approach:

Each student is different but I like to work from set books suitable for the child's level in order to closely monitor progress. I focus on the skills and knowledge necessary to pass the 11 plus and year 6 SATS.
