Personal Description:
I am a mathematician, with a special interest in applied mathematics and statistics. I worked for some years in University departments as a tutor and then lecturer. More recently I have worked for almost two decades in industry as a mathematician at a prestigious research centre in Cambridge. I am familiar with many aspects of secondary education through my daughter, who has recently completed her A levels at Hills Road 6th form college, and a son at secondary school. My daughter has just begun reading PPE at at Oriel College Oxford. I am currently working at the Dept. of Engineering, University of Cambridge.

Teaching Experience:

I have taught Mathematics and Physics, to undergraduates from a wide variety of disciplines. I have particular experience of teaching Mathematics to people whose primary interests lie in Business studies and in Engineering. I also gained valuable insight into adult education when I taught adult part-time students.
I have also provided tutorials for students with many different requirements including A level and undergraduate Physics & Mathematics courses and, for example, GMAT Mathematics prep for MBA entrance exams.
Recently I have had the opportunity to tutor intensively for STEP tests and this has become a personal interest -there is always a new challenge, and the examiners are skilled at finding new ways to test the same knowledge level.

Tutoring Approach:

The details of the correct approach vary from one tutee to another, but the principles remain the same. I seek to establish the student's ability within the context of a given aim and to then set realistic objectives.
I think that most students have more mathematical ability than they themselves believe; this can be brought out in a positive fashion once negative stereotypes are discarded. Also the application of mathematics to the real world can be exciting and profitable.

Parental Comment
Hi Brian,

I hope you're enjoying the Summer break.

I just wanted to let you know that Kalen has a A* for maths and an A for further Maths. He's very pleased with this and on behalf of him I'd like to say thank you so much for all your help.

Overall he got A*A*AAB and is off to Warwick to do a general engineering course.

Thanks again Brian,

Suneela

STUDENT COMMENTS
Dear Brian. I found our tutorials very helpful and feel much more able to hit the ground running when I return to Oxford. I will be sure to recommend you to anyone else I know in need of tuition.
Peter N, returning undergraduate.

Brian helped me to revise my university maths before starting an MSc course 10 years after completing my undergraduate degree. He was patient, non-judgmental of my rusty abilities, and gave useful examples of mathematical problems to help explain some very difficult concepts. He is very reliable and a pleasure to work with. I would have no problem recommending Brian to others and would certainly see him again for further tuition should the need arise.
David C, returning graduate student

Another parent comment
Brian is helping my daughter who attends Hills Road with both physics and maths and she has just had her fifth session. This is the first time with have engaged with a personal tutor so really wasn't sure what we were doing and started out with some trepidation. We soon were able to ensure that the hour we spent with Brian was really productive and useful. Brian has been really helpful and and this has increased my daughters confidence and knowledge which is exactly what we were hoping for.

New student comments
I'm just emailing to tell you that my physics unit 2 exam went quite well. There were only a few small questions that I couldn't answer. I will tell you my result when I get them on the 14th of August. I must thank you for helping me over the past few months. I really have no clue how badly these exams would have gone if you did not help me. Thank you so much for your help.
Calum M AS Physics student.

Personal Description:
I have a passion for the English language and its literature which is reflected in my work. I really enjoy tutoring, because I know the one-to-one learning situation gives students the attention and focus which they need to improve, and which they cannot get in school. I am a parent, a published poet and occasional actor. I only work in West Yorkshire, up to 12 miles' drive from my home, but I will offer discounts to students willing to travel to me..

Teaching Experience:

I have 30 years' experience of teaching English to kids of varying backgrounds and abilities (11 to 18 up to A level) so I have built up an extensive bank of resources over the years, which I use to carefully prepare for lessons. I am also an experienced examiner for AQA, which offers valuable insights into exactly how to achieve high GCSE grades . I have been tutoring successfully for five years now, and my knowledge and expertise would be very useful to students aiming at high marks in GCSE and A level exams. Recently, I have helped a pupil win a scholarship to high-achieving independent QEGS in Wakefield, and others to gain entrance to grammar schools

Tutoring Approach:

I am patient, friendly and easy to get on with. I have always tried to make my lessons interesting, relevant and inter-active. I tailor my teaching to the pupil and know that praise and encouragement are the keys to confidence and progress. A good sense of humour is vital, too.
I have helped to improve the grades of many pupils, some of whom have achieved the highest grade at GCSE, and have coached younger ones through entrance exams to sought-after schools. One student, whom I tutored for three years, progressed from a poor level 4 in year 8 to GCSE grade B, the minimum requirement for A levels in many good schools, while others have achieved the A* grades required for their chosen paths.
I have achieved high ratings from the parents of students I have tutored. A good tutor can make a difference with focused one-to-one attention, and I am a good, committed tutor.

Personal Description:
Originally from Newcastle, I am now an actor and enjoy tutoring alongside my acting work. I have worked in TV, and also in theatre, including venues such as The National Theatre and the West End. Especially with younger students, I like to keep my lessons creative and practical. I studied English and Drama at Bristol University and then went on to train at The Bristol Old Vic Theatre School. Recently, I have been tutoring in English, Drama, 11+ Common Entrance exams and general Primary school help.

Teaching Experience:

I have been tutoring for over 6 years. Alongside my tutoring, I am currently teaching Music and Drama in schools and I run workshops with Sixth Formers on ways of analysing texts practically.

7+ - I worked with Elektra (6) preparing her for 7+ Examinations. Covering English, Maths and Reasoning focussed on entry to Notting Hill and Ealing High School.

7+ - Working with Harry on English, Maths and exam technique, focussing him for 7+ exam for Dulwich Prep School. Harry has traits of both dyslexia and dyspraxia.

7+ - I work with Jules on his English. Jules is French and has just started attending a French school, so we are working to keep his English up to scratch. Main areas of focus are: speaking, spelling, listening/understanding and grammar.

7+ - Working with Charlie mainly on English, increasing his confidence in all areas but focussing on Writing, Grammar and Punctuation, and Comprehension.

11+ - Working with Guy on English and Maths one day a week. Mainly focussed on Guy's writing and spelling. Guy is preparing for entry to Westminster and Eton Schools.

11+ - I worked with Ingrid on English and Maths in preparation for exams for Notting Hill and Ealing High School, Francis Holland and Godolphin and Latymer Schools. Ingrid went to her first choice of Notting Hill and Ealing High.

11+ - I worked with Olivia in preparation for her Common Entrance exams on all papers (English, Maths, Verbal and Non-Verbal Reasoning) as well as interview practice. Olivia is now attending North London Collegiate School (her first choice) but I also prepared her for entrance to Highgate School for Girls, City of London School for Girls and Queen's College.

Primary Help - I worked with brothers Teddy (7) and Alfie (10) mainly on English and Maths but also across all subjects generally to improve knowledge, confidence, spelling and vocabulary.

Primary Help - I worked with Rohan (10) on improving his confidence and basic skills in English and Maths. Rohan was very inquisitive and keen but needed help focussing and answering the specific questions that he was being asked.

A Level English Literature (AQA) - worked with Oliver (17) helping with coursework on The Great Gatsby and the poetry of Keats and Larkin. Oliver achieved an A grade.

AS Level Drama (AQA) - helped Yasmin to explore the analysis of texts of Lady Windermere's Fan and A View From The Bridge in preparation for exams, in which she achieved an A.

GCSE English Literature - tutored Amy in preparation for coursework and exams. Texts: Lord of The Flies and A View From The Bridge.

SKYPE - I teach Pietro (11) English as a Second Language weekly online.

Home Schooling - Inigo (6 when I started) had been getting reports of generally dropping behind in class work with a lack of concentration. I homeschooled him every Friday for two terms. He was having particular trouble in English and Maths. Inigo was struggling especially with English, in all areas, and was most behind with Spelling and Grammar. For him to engage, I had to be both creative (to keep him interested) but also quick as the plan was to get him into Kew Green Primary for the next academic year. We covered the basics of year 1 and ironed out any problems (also to give him confidence with the things he could do) and then went onto year 2. I would use a lot of what he was naturally interested in (football and particular comic book characters) in the teaching to keep his attention. With Maths, Inigo could do simple addition and subtraction but struggled when getting into 2 digits, multiplication, or any sort of wordy problem where the sum to be done was not absolutely clear. So, again, we covered the basics and then pushed on. He worked really hard and eventually we were looking forward to things he may encounter next year. At first Inigo was quite reluctant to work but I managed to win him over and build up a good rapport for productive days of homeschooling. Thankfully, he gained a place at Kew Green, and we were delighted! (Though it did mean, unfortunately, that he didn't need me any more...).

English for Foreign Learners - Helped 8 year old Augustinos (Greek) with reading and homework to improve English, as well as taking him on educational trips around London.

Drama (practical) - Coached Emily (21) and Hannah (20) with acting lessons in preparation for Drama School Entry auditions. Emily has now trained at The Bristol Old Vic Theatre School and Hannah is training at LAMDA.

Voice and Elocution - Helped Law Student Amar (20) with speechmaking and projection for use in debating.

SEN - worked with Dean (20), a law student with dyslexia, upon exam preparation and practice.

Tutoring Approach:

I will tailor whatever I teach to my pupil's needs. I am very easy to get along with and very open to how you think you or your child will best learn. Above all I would want a pupil to look forward to my sessions with them so will make sure that they are practical, interesting and varied. Especially with the younger students I teach I think that lessons need to be fun to keep them excited about learning! If you have any questions at all or specific enquiries, please do not hesitate to get in touch.

Personal Description:
I graduated in 2012 from Oxford University with my undergraduate degree in Physiological Sciences. I achieved 2:1 after a distinction in my Preliminary exams. Away from work, I'm pretty sporty, competing at rowing, squash, cycling and rugby.

Teaching Experience:

I cannot claim to have many years of teaching experience - but that does mean that I am more familiar with the exam boards. I have tutored two tutees through uktutors.com: the 1st improved from an E to an A in 3 of the 4 units in A level Biology in just 4 weeks of tutoring and the 2nd from D to B in AS Maths!

I am more experienced in tutoring for sport. I coach rowing full-time in London and developing both athletes and other coaches within the team - so I am comfortable and competent in teaching environments. I use my own personal experiences from when I was a beginner to teach others.

Tutoring Approach:

Maximising marks in minimal time whatever your ability. The harder workers or clever students don't always get better marks. Strategy is the most important factor. Exam boards regulate exam papers to follow strict rules to such an extent that they can become predictable. If your strategy is right then the seemingly endless information in the sciences' syllabuses can be condensed to just a few A4 pages of understanding.

I believe in tailoring tutoring to the student because different people with different ambitions need different strategies to exceed them.

Personal Description:
I have a passion for Science and hope to go into laboratory research. In August I will be finishing my Masters in Biological Sciences at the University of Manchester.
In June 2015 I finished my BSc in Biology from Imperial College London with First Class Honours. . My A level grades were A* A A in Biology, Chemistry and Mathematics (respectively). I am committed and enthusiastic in everything I do and I love new experiences and challenges.

Teaching Experience:

I have been a private tutor for over 4 years and have had over a dozen students, ranging from 4-28 years of age.

In addition to my professional tutoring:
-In the lab I teach new practical techniques and knowledge to students and my peers
-I am training to become an assistant instructor in Women's Self Defence with the charity that I do martial arts with
-I have a younger sister whom I have helped with academia since she was a child, improving her knowledge and confidence.

Tutoring Approach:

Tutoring is something that I thoroughly enjoy. It makes me feel like I have made a difference when I am able to help someone better understand and apply something that, up until then, teachers or peers have failed to do.
A large part of my role as a tutor, particularly with younger students, is to improve their self-confidence, I give them additional knowledge, confidence to apply and convey it and confidence to ask questions.

I believe that the path to exam success involves three things:
-Thorough knowledge of subject material
-Exam technique (what to write/say to get the marks)
-On-the-day performance

I feel that my job as a tutor is to assess these points in my students and to help them with whatever stage they require to boost their performance.

YOUNGER STUDENTS: when tutoring children I find that it is important to continuously change the activity or topic every 5-10 minutes so that the student is engaged and gets the most out of the lessons. I have learned many of the techniques for tutoring children during my training and experience as a Young Scout Leader.
In my lessons I play games based on the material and use tools such as white boards, the feedback I receive is that my students really enjoy and look forward to our lessons.

SECONDARY LEVEL & OLDER STUDENTS: I feel it is important for my students to understand how the topic they are learning fits into the wider picture. Often I find that the reason my students struggled with some subject areas is that they were not taught the broader concepts or knowledge was assumed, this is particularly common with Chemistry. I aim to fill this gap so that students learn and understand the syllabus learning points as opposed to just memorizing them.
With Maths I go through many practice questions with my students. I set a question and we will work on it together or independently, then I will give the answer and show my working. My students find it very helpful that I work alongside them and provide them with a full solution including method, as opposed to just an answer.

I was a statistician for 18 years before returning to teaching seven years ago.

Teaching Experience:

I teach maths one-to-one, in small groups and in whole classes at several secondary schools in Tyne and Wear as well as at further education colleges, covering all ages up to A level.

Tutoring Approach:

I enjoy explaining maths at all levels of ability and get real satisfaction from connecting at the student`s level. I believe I`m good at recognising what that level is and being able to adjust my explanations accordingly. I`m pretty relaxed and like my students to feel comfortable during our sessions. My approach is to identify areas of weakness, explain concepts from basics, then do some questions till confidence is achieved.

Personal Description:
Hi, I'm Suzanne and I have over 10 years of experience studying and working in UK universities. I have undergraduate and masters degrees in Psychology, and completed my PhD in Biological Anthropology in 2014. I am interested in all aspects of human evolution ranging from cognition and biology to politics and philosophy. My academic research focuses on comparative cognition - using behavioural studies of other species of primate to gain insight into how modern humans evolved - and included two years of fieldwork with wild primates in Gashaka Gumti National Park in Nigeria.

While I love working with non-human primates, I am also interested in science communication and have worked on projects ranging from ongoing education work with UCL and ZSL London Zoo to stand up comedy to at Edinburgh Festival.

Teaching Experience:

I am an Associate Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, and have taught undergraduate and postgraduate courses at University College London, including 'Approaches to Knowledge', a foundation module aimed at developing critical thinking and a range of study skills, and 'Evolution and the Human Condition'. The latter is a second year undergraduate course for which I co-wrote the syllabus and taught, covering various aspects of evolutionary theory in biology, chemistry and philosophy. I also have experience designing and grading assessments at degree level, and can offer insight into what examiners are looking for when grading essays.

Outside of the University environment, I have previously tutored masters students in Psychology and Anthropology, and worked as an outreach lecturer visiting schools and delivering workshops for children aged 12-17.

Student Testimonials:

"I cannot express highly enough how supportive Suzanne has been. I employed her help for my final degree year after receiving very poor level of feedback from my own university and she has not disappointed. Quick to respond to any concern I have in a supportive and guiding way, Suzanne has been a lifeline for me. Suzanne explains difficult concepts in an easy-to-understand manner. Her feedback is fantastic, critical but in a supportive and guiding way that has enabled my development and improvement."

"The quality of staff on the course was far above the standard of many courses on offer, and size of classes conducive to their exuberance. Consequently, these were among the best if not the best I've had."
- Former undergraduate student

"I was very happy with my seminar as she listened to what we needed each week and stuck to a loose plan, rather than keeping a strict plan to cover each week"

Tutoring Approach:

I emphasise the critical thinking and writing skills that enable students not only to obtain higher grades, but also to continue to progress their studies outside of tutoring sessions.

While individual sessions are relaxed and discussion and debate around study topics is encouraged, I ask students to define a specific aim in their first session so that I can ensure that we are progressing towards that goal in subsequent meetings. If working towards an exam or assignment deadline, I request the course syllabus to ensure the best results, and have successfully helped students to obtain high grades using this approach in the past.

Once expectations have been established, there is a lot of room for flexibility such as the inclusion of field trips to exhibitions and public lectures that are relevant to the topic of study if students wish to broaden their approach to academic work.

Personal Description:
I am a professional, patient, and fun loving person. I have a BSc., MSc., and am just completing a PhD in Psychology. I enjoy reading and writing academic and popular literature and I have a broad knowledge of assessment criteria used by schools and universities.

Teaching Experience:

I have been teaching for 3 years now at the undergraduate, postgraduate, and adult learner level. I have taught traditional lectures, seminars, workshops, and practical sessions. I also have experience designing and marking assessments at different levels.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe tutoring should be an enjoyable but challenging experience. I utilise a mix of paper-based tasks, presentations, and reading. I believe in constantly measuring performance for individuals so they know how they are improving and I also employ an "errorless learning" approach; I don't believe highlighting peoples failures is an effective method of teaching, rather I treat a wrong answer as a learning experience and encourage people to fail often so that they can grow rapidly.

I derive my learning materials from the official syllabus and supplement my own material when I feel a broader knowledge is necessary. I also focus on written and oral communication so that factual knowledge can be effectively translated to exam success.
