Personal Description:
I might be expensive but I am worth it as your child will see a marked improvement in their results and confidence levels. To assess whether I am the right tutor for you I offer the first lesson for free.

I also offer short intensive Maths courses for entrance to American Universities on some weekends. Each course is 2 days long and is specifically tailored for UK students. It is specifically designed to bridge the gap in knowledge, format and techniques between the GCSE Maths exam and the SAT exam. If you use UK Tutors to contact me about the courses I will deduct their fee from the course price.

I was awarded a First Class Honours degree from University College London in 1997 and went on to study a PhD in Quantum Mechanics. On successful completion of my PhD in 2001 I started work at Thales Research and Technology (TRT) where I led projects on Adaptive Learning Systems and Information Management. I initiated the first programme to span the three TRT laboratories in France, Netherlands and UK in the area of Cognitive Systems research. I then went on to set up and lead a large collaborative team between TRT and University of Surrey to study remote collaboration technologies. I joined General Dynamics United Kingdom Limited in 2005, primarily to ensure exploitation of DIF DTC technologies into the UK Ministry of Defence Equipment Programme. I received my Chartered Physicist status in 2004 and am now a director of an innovation company.

Teaching Experience:

My teaching experience ranges from teaching GCSE students all the way up to teaching PhD students to improve their thesis writing skills. One of my students improved from a D to an A at GCSE level after just six months of tuition with me, and commonly students improve by at least one grade. Apart from the usual syllabuses I am experienced at teaching students the Maths section of the SATs and ACTs in order to get scholarships to American Universities.

Tutoring Approach:

My tuition method involves making Maths and Physics fun so that children and young adults will remember their lessons and overcome the "I can't do science" syndrome. So that you can assess whether or not I am the right tutor for your child I offer the first lesson for free.

Personal Description:
I choose to study mathematics for my degree as an interests. (so is my interest for physics) After the studies, it is come to me I should share my enthusiasm to younger students as well. Private tutoring as a part time job is a good point to start, with the help from me, I hope students to find the subjects more interesting rather than a dull subject to part in the school.

Teaching Experience:

Qualification-wise, I've got A for Mathematics & Physics at A-Level, obtained MA Mathematics (Hons) from Edinburgh University and MSc Mathematics from King's College London.
Experience-wise, I've become a private tutor for three years now and I had taught over 200 students. The subject include mathematics, physics and mandarin. Range from KS3 to degree level.
Dec 2012 - Feb 2013: Teaching Assistant at Lister Community School
Oct 2014 - Jun 2015: Maths & Mandarin Tutor at Greig City Academy

Tutoring Approach:

For the mathematics and physics teaching, I believe the conceptional understanding is much more important than memorize the method. Once the concept has been absorbed, the method of solving problem become rather trivial. Of course to maximize the efficiency of learning, an interests in the subject is essential. Hence I'd like to increase the students engagement by given information on more practical use of the knowledge or more news on advanced study.

Note: for people asking for university level maths. I will ask lecture notes or at least syllabus. Though undergraduate maths is taught at similar level, there are variation for each modules due to each lecturers' style. Just list a module name hardly tells what topics are required to study. Lecture notes are used to see the way that particular lecture taught, otherwise give me a syllabus I shall use my own lecture notes.

Personal Description:
Hi I'm Heather!

I'm from London and my favourite colour is green.

I hold a First Class Degree in English Literature and Drama from Manchester University. I am also a trained actress.

I've been tutoring for over 5 years, working with students aged 6 years, up to 18, supporting them through KS1-4, GCSE and A'Level/IB curricula. I have also taught English as a foreign language. The content of my tutorials is entirely student- led; i.e I work towards the individual's goals and learning styles. I am experienced in the teaching of essay writing, exam preparation and textual analysis/understanding. The most important thing I can do as a tutor is to empower the student to feel confident in their own abilities and thoughts.

I have worked with students of A Level and GCSE in a diverse range of texts including Victorian Gothic literature, the American Novel, pre and post 1900 poetry, modern drama and theatre studies, post -colonial literature, dystopian literature. All of my students have achieved their personal desired A-C grades, and gained acceptance into the university of their choice.

I have 2 years experience of home schooling Key Stage 2 and 3 literacy and numeracy, with an excellent overview of the curriculum and a variety of techniques to engage different learners. I have worked closely with young learners with dyslexia and Asperger's syndrome.

I also teach drama school audition preparation, public speaking skills and methods of overcoming academic anxiety. I h

Teaching Experience:

-5years as a private tutor
-Assistant Tutor; Kumon Maths (Hampstead Branch)
-6 months as a Teaching Assistant (SEN) ; Carlton Primary School
-2 months as a 1-1 learning and care assistant to a young child with non-verbal cerebral palsy
-On-going voluntary work as a drama wokshop facilitator, (and Hackney Shed Inclusive Theatre Company) both a university and drama school
-TEFL introductory course- Cambridge
-Creative writing teacher training with The Ministry of Stories
-Drama facilitator, Hackney Shed Theatre Company

Tutoring Approach:

I believe tutoring should be a dialogue, not a dictatorship. Each lesson would be highly organized to cater for the requirements and ability level of the individual student. I plan all sessions to include a range of discussion, demonstration, exercises, review of work and homework tasks if required. Crucial to my teaching approach is an easy, flexible engagement with the individual- working to their learning style and objectives, and encouraging the pupil to draw out their own understandings rather than enforce rote learning.

Areas of expertise include: Literature Romantic poetry, contemporary poetry, the dystopian novel, the Gothic novel, WWI literature, post-colonial literature, the early novel, Shakespeare, dramatic writing, film studies. History- Nazi Germany, Fascist Italy, Russia from Revolution through to the cold war. Apartheid in South Africa, the Suffragette movement, the history of British Education, Chartism. Theatre- Greek theatre, Kabuki, German Expressionism, Melodrama, Realism, Naturalism, Absurdism, post 1950s British drama, contemporary theatre

Personal Description:
I am currently a freelance writer and researcher working from home on a variety of subjects, including English Literature, Theatre/Film/Media Studies, Sociology, Psychology, as well as other Humanities. I am flexible about when I can tutor, to work round the schedule of others.

Teaching Experience:

I have tutored GCSE, A-level, Degree and Doctorate-level students on a range of subjects, although my main focus has been English Literature and Psychology, and, increasingly, Sociology. At Cambridge I spent a few weeks working in a primary school, as I did when I was younger, and I used to teach primary school children at home as my mum was a childminder. I have run drama clubs and workshops, and worked with a host of young people, including those with learning difficulties. I have written model essays for exam boards, proofread and edited work to be published, and worked on many dissertations and PhDs with University students.

My students generally gain their desired grades at A-Level, if they apply themselves and take my advice on tips and tricks to help with revision - little and often is the key, as well as putting random words or theorists where you can see them everyday - like your mirror! - so they can become familiar and memorable.

Tutoring Approach:

I have access to previous papers and model exam answers, and ensure that I am clued up on exam specifications and changes. For English, I will of course always read the set texts that my tutees are studying prior to the first session. I like to mind-map various themes and ideas with the student, and think outside the box as it were, and always make sure that the ideas stem from the student's own work and thinking - so that they can remember it more fully and develop it in future (often students have more knowledge, ideas and insight than they realise, it just needs coaxing out of them!). I often tutor on coursework as well as examination preparation.

For Psychology and Sociology, a more systematic approach is required; I generally like to go over the material thoroughly, testing the student throughout, and spend time on previous exam papers and questions, planning essay answers, discussing how theories relate to real-life situations, and generally helping the student grasp what is required of them in the exam.

APPROACH TO TUITION

Tailoring tuition to suit the student
The advantage of one-to-one tuition is that I can assess what specific needs a student has, and organise my lessons around those needs. Some students need essay technique help some have a specific set of topics they want to go over others might need an entire course taught to them as they have left school or are being home educated.

Knowing the syllabus
All GCSEs and A Levels follow a national syllabus, and I know them all very well. In my first lesson with any student I will make sure they are aware of the overall requirements of the syllabus, on a topic-by-topic basis. I will always stick to what the student needs to know to pass that particular syllabus I do not needlessly make students learn things they do not need to know.

Digital handouts
In my years of tuition, I have built up a cloud-based digital archive of hundreds of handouts. Say a student is learning about arguments for the existence of God for RS A Level - I have handouts very clearly outlining the Ontological, Teleological and Cosmological arguments and all relevant criticisms. These handouts are a great extra help alongside my teaching.

Teaching Experience:

I have thousands of hours of tuition experience, having taught hundreds of students. I have dozens of letters of recommendation. Some of the specific subjects I have taught include:

Government & Politics (Edexcel and OCR)
Cambridge Pre-U Theology & Philosophy
Philosophy A Level (AQA, OCR and Edexcel)
Religious Studies (OCR, AQA and Edexcel) GCSE, A Level
Sociology (AQA) AS and A2
Theology and Religious Studies at degree level (I have helped six different students receive good grades for third year RS dissertations)
Oxbridge applications and interview practice

I have a written reference from a doctor of Philosophy and college chaplain at Cambridge University, as well as an excellent reference from my full-time tutoring placement for the last year.

Extracts from letters of recommendation (all available in full on request):

"Incredibly reliable and professional...James' superior knowledge and passion for his subject resulted in my son gaining both in confidence and ability and led him to succeed in achieving a Distinction grade when his school had predicted a Merit."
Mother of Pre-U student, 2013.

"James's enthusiasm, attention to detail and ability to make the lessons interesting and absorbing has paid off...I cannot recommend James highly enough. He is punctual and thoughtful and I would not hesitate to hire him again in the future."
Mother of homeschooled A2 candidate taught full time for a year in History (Edexcel), Sociology (AQA) and Religious Studies (Edexcel), 2011/12.

"A great source of help to my daughter over the past two years; making smooth preparations for her to retake her AS level, alongside her continuing work towards her A level. He contributed invaluably towards her outstanding AS level pass mark of 100% . For her A2, Olivia received an A."
Mother of Philosophy A Level (AQA) Candidate, 2012/13.

"James was an excellent tutor. He explained complex ideas clearly and tailored his tutoring to suit my son. Importantly, he acted as a strong motivator and made sure rigourous revision notes were made... humourous, friendly and a good natured motivator. My son received an A*".
Mother of GCSE Religious Studies student (OCR), 2012/13.

"He immediately established a very good working relationship with my daughter which encouraged her to really engage with the subject and plan and think about the topics in depth. He helped her with the structure of her essays and how to build up a coherent and well thought out argument...I would highly recommend James as a Philosophy tutor."
Mother of Religious Studies (OCR) student, 2012/13.

"Jame's enthusiasm, attention to detail and ability to make the lessons interesting and absorbing has paid off...I cannot recommend Jame's highly enough. He is punctual and thoughtful and I would not hesitate to hire him again in the future."
Mother of homeschooled A2 candidate taught full time for a year in History (Edexcel), Sociology (AQA) and Religious Studies (Edexcel), 2011/12.

"James was very familiar with the curriculum and both his discussions with my son and the work set were of an appropriate and challenging level, set work was always marked and discussed at the following tutorial. My son received a good Distinction in his exams."
Mother of Pre-U Philosophy & Theology student (Cambridge), 2013.

"My daughter was unable to attend school due to illness, and so James was entirely responsible for her preparation. She received a Distinction in her exams. James was a diligent tutor, who managed to convey this difficult subject with a lightness of touch. I know that my daughter enjoyed her lessons enormously, and that she found it easy to learn from James. He not only imparted the necessary knowledge but also inspired her with confidence."
Mother of homeschooled Pre-U Philosophy & Theology student (Cambridge), who I taught the entire syllabus to in 2012/13.

"James was brilliant. Despite tutoring my two twin daughters at the same time, he adapted his teaching style to suit both of them differently. He made the whole course much easier for them to understand than they had found at school. Beyond this, he boosted their confidence and increased their essay writing skills. He provided a large amount of digital handouts which they also found useful. Both girls ended up with very high As in all the topics he taught them in."
Mother of twin daughters taught in Religious Studies (OCR) and Philosophy (AQA), 2012/13.

"...James covered far more content than the school had taught in a whole year and to a greater depth and understanding. His knowledge of the syllabus and ability to explain complex philosophical arguments and content, in a way that my daughter could understand, was second to none... put back a confidence in my daughter that had been partly destroyed in this subject due to poor teaching at school. I have never seen my daughter so relaxed and happy after taking an exam than she was after re-taking these two."
Mother of homeschooled candidate in Religious Studies (Edexcel), 2012/13.

Personal Description:
I charge 35 per hour or 55 for a 2-hour slot. I specialise in maths at A/AS level and degree level. I can tutor either in my house or elsewhere in the area.

I have a first class maths degree and a maths PhD from the University of St Andrews. I also have A* grades in GCSE maths and additional maths and A grades in A level maths and further maths.

Teaching Experience:

While studying for my doctorate I tutored small groups and one-to-one for a number of undergraduate courses. This focussed on question practice following lecture material, and included further discussion and explanation of the theory.

Since leaving university I have tutored A/AS level and degree level maths. This has covered pure maths, applied maths and statistics. This has included a range of exam boards, including Edexcel, AQA and OCR, and my tutees have had excellent success rates in their exams.

Tutoring Approach:

I have a flexible approach to tutoring and am keen to be guided by the tutee's aims and learning style.

If you are aiming for specific exams then the exam syllabus and practice of all past paper questions would be the main focus, as this is crucial for success. If you are struggling with certain areas of the theory then I would spend time in further explanation and discussion, clarifying the material and ensuring that you have a solid basis of knowledge to apply in examinations.

My name is Lisa, I have a passion for the Martial Arts and love nothing more than teaching others. I have trained in Karate and Kickboxing prior to Taekwondo which has been my life for the past 18 years. I hope to be able to pass on my experience and knowledge to others. I have a venue available in Keighley and Bingley for private tutoring.

Teaching Experience:

4th Dan Black Belt in the Martial Art of Taekwondo with over 15 years experience of teaching. I hold the 3rd Class Foreign Instructors qualification from completing my training at the World Taekwondo Headquarters in Seoul, South Korea.

I have additional qualifications in the fitness industry where I formally worked as a Gym Manager.

I offer private 1-1 tuition in self-defence and Taekwondo; I also teach Martial Arts to young people as part of West Yorkshire Police's Safer Schools initiative and have experience of teaching women's groups, young people in community organisations and individuals.

Tutoring Approach:

I am keen to be able to help others and pass on my knowledge and experience. I will teach you basic techniques to keep you safe & which work. Be aware that some instructors may show you fancy techniques but these aren't realistic in a dangerous situation, the key is to make you feel more confident, more aware and feel able to deal with a situation effectively should one arise. The basic techniques are the ones you can learn and master and which will hopefully keep you safe. It's not about strength but about technique and being knowledgeable in a situation.

I was the first recipient of the Mikardo scholarship, awarded by the British Foreign Office, and, whilst at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, was awarded a Golda Meir Fellowship. A fluent Hebrew speaker, I was Peer Tutor in Hebrew at University College London, where I was awarded the departmental prize for excellence in the Hebrew language, and I have tutored privately in Britain, and abroad.

Tutoring Approach:

Relaxed, interactive, theme-based, and multi-disciplinary. Use of past papers, analysis, deconstruction of exam and essay questions, concepts, and requirements; development of essay, and exam structure. I pay particular attention to a student's self-confidence, and self-expression, which often serve as catalysts for enhanced self-belief and, hence, success.
