Personal Description:
I am only taking on a small number of students this year. My skill set is best suited to students who are not reaching their optimal potential because of emotional stresses at home or school, or because the teaching is inadequate at school

My background in counselling helps me build rapport and bring out the best in students who have had emotional problems at school.

I am concerned with education of the whole person, rather than cramming in knowledge just to get through that exam.

I have experience of teaching both in schools, colleges and universities and bring a depth of understanding to my work with people from nine to ninety.

I have four grown up children.

I have worked in 3 of the four top universities in the UK. I am involved in educational projects in a number of schools.

Teaching Experience:

BA Hons. PGCE 1974. I have taught in primary and secondary schools, as well as sixth form colleges and universities, including Oxford and the London School of Economics.. I have also taught in private schools and been a director of a school of counselling and psychotherapy. I have taught psychology at Abingdon and Witney College, and poetry in many Oxfordshire Schools. I teach poetry short courses for Oxford University at the Ashmolean museum. I teach both GCSE and IGCSE courses.

Tutoring Approach:

I will always do my best to help a student improve their exam performance, using my wide knowledge of psychology and counselling/coaching skills, as well as my subject knowledge. I most enjoy working with students who want to gain a deeper understanding of their subjects that will be of use to them in their real lives, rather than just to get through an exam. I am very good at building a rapport with students, and finding a way to bring the best out of their skill set.

Personal Description:
I am a TEFL teacher with a university degree (Music) and am from London. In my day job I work in a music company. I also teach English to foreign students in London, having worked for 2 years in British Council accredited language schools both in London and Portugal. I am a very friendly person and really enjoy teaching any age group.

Teaching Experience:

I have taught TEFL in language schools for two years, and have given private tuition in English and in Music for 9 years for all levels of learners. I have taught English at all levels from Beginner to Advanced, plus Business English and conversation classes. I have taught children as young as 6, all the way up to adults, and vary my teaching method according to the age group I am working with.

I have a Music degree and play and teach the Recorder, as well as giving lessons in music Theory. I used to work for the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music in the syllabus department, so have great insider knowledge about music exams. Additionally, I also used to mark Theory papers, so know what examiners are looking for.

Tutoring Approach:

I try to be as learner-centred as possible in my teaching. First I will conduct a needs analysis to assess a potential student's level and to identify the areas in which they would like to improve and their preferred learning methods. I encourage my students to actively participate in my lessons - it will not just be me talking. I aim to make lessons fun and engaging, as I believe that students learn more when they are interested in the material given.

Personal Description:
Qualified and experienced EFL specialist. I've been teaching English as a Foreign or Additional Language for 7 years to a wide age range and for a variety of specialist purposes.

I've been teaching in China for the last 3 years and will move back to the UK in July. I'm looking to start tutoring again from August so please get in touch if your looking for a tutor to start around then.

I'm a calm, organised and friendly person. I enjoy teaching and I want my students to enjoy learning English and to see the progress they are making.

I'm very interested in using technology in learning and for students who like learning with screens I will integrate other websites and apps into their homework and preparation.

I learned French in school and I'm continuing learning Chinese. I remember my language learning experience in school and in China, I know what a struggle it is to understand new grammar rules and how difficult it can be some weeks to make time to practice. I try to create an enjoyable and supportive environment in lessons so it is not stressful to make mistakes and students don't leave feeling tired out by learning.

Teaching Experience:

I have taught :
English in south China for 3 years (2013-2016)
English as a Foreign/Additional Language for 7 years (2009 - present)
students preparing for IELTS and PTE
students writing dissertations and theses
beginner English speakers and native speakers
students from 7 years old up to retired grandparents
English for Business, Medicine and Engineering
preparation for driving theory and food safety tests

Tutoring Approach:

I like to incorporate games, puzzles and challenges along with the content to help you engage with and better understand how to use the language. I'm very adaptable and will plan lessons based on what you want to achieve and how you like to learn.

For students getting ready for a test I can prepare a course of lessons with exam specific practice and a focus on the areas that most concern you.

For primary age students I have a variety of fun and engaging activities that get them excited about joining in lessons and learning English.

For university students I can give tailored lessons to help with essay, paragraph and sentence structure. I can also review grammar applied to the context of your subject to help you in your academic writing.

Personal Description:
Hello! I'm Nicole. I'm a bit of a history and literature geek (and I hope to convert you!!)

I studied History and English at the University of Oxford (Wadham College). I graduated with Double First Class Honours in 2010, and came top in my academic year: no mean feat!

I believe that my excellent grades reflect several important characteristics: my exceptional academic ability, my high academic standards, my mastery of study-skills, and my dedicated and conscientious work ethic. I look to encourage all of these qualities in my students.

More importantly though, my outstanding results are a result of my absolute love for, knowledge of, and commitment to, my subjects. I absolutely love to learn, and aim to help my students to find a similar excitement and passion for their studies!

Teaching Experience:

Over the past few years, I have privately tutored a number of students. My students have come from a diverse age range - spanning from the very young to the much older - and I feel comfortable working with children, teenagers and adults.

I have tutored students in History; English Literature; English Language; reading comprehension; speaking, listening, reading and writing skills; primary level Maths.

I have also tutored 11+ applicants, for which I have a 100% success rate.

I also have experience in mentoring potential Oxbridge applicants, and advising university peers and younger students on study and revision skills.

After graduating, I worked full-time as a Cover Supervisor in a secondary school. That means that I took classes in all subjects across the secondary curriculum, for students ranging from 11 - 16 years of age, and I also supported teaching in A-Level English classes. Seeing up to 150 students in a day was a challenging and rewarding experience in which I was constantly thinking on my feet, and successfully applying my teaching skills to brand new material (in familiar and unfamiliar subjects). This job also gave me the opportunity to observe and work with students of all abilities and learning styles, and to learn how to adapt my teaching style accordingly.

I have worked on a number of projects which involved education, support, or leadership of young people. These have included:

- Working with and supervising over 120 foreign children and teenagers whilst employed by a Cambridge-based language summer school as a programme coordinator and social leader.

- Peer support leader within the APAUSE programme ('Added Power and Understanding in Sex Education') which offered sex education and empowerment lessons for younger teenagers.

- Co-director role in secondary level production of 'Les Miserables' with responsibility for over 100 children and teenagers aged between 11 and 18.

- Co-director role in community theatre production of 'West Side Story' with responsibility for working with approximately 50 children and teenagers.

- Assistant role for GCSE-level 'Speaking and Listening Days' which involved aiding teachers in helping students improve the quality of their English language GCSE assessed work.

Tutoring Approach:

I am passionate about learning - and look to encourage a similar excitement in my students. In History this might be through some particularly fascinating or gruesome details, or in English, through exploring a beautiful line of poetry.

I am very individual-student orientated, so I seek always to establish each individual's aims for tutoring, and then we will work together toward these. For one student, this might be to know how to deconstruct a poem; for another, how to write a good essay.

With some students, I will plan structured lessons, whereas others prefer simply to earmark time with a dedicated tutor, before deciding what to do themselves at the time. Perhaps they will bring their homework, a study-book, or something they are stuck with - whatever the case, I aim always to listen and respond to the needs of each individual student.

With all my students (but especially the younger ones) I am a big believer in making learning FUN! I therefore often design lessons which use a variety of practical learning activities to keep them stimulated, rather than just relying on book-learning. In the past, I've mummified a teddy, conducted a press conference, and taught times-tables via Grandmother's footsteps! I find this to be particularly effective for students who struggle with concentration.

I believe that when offered education through the right methods, everyone is able to maximise their own ability to learn. Having completed a full-time degree and worked in secondary education, I am equipped with plenty of different learning methods. With my students, I therefore look to discover which approaches work well for them, and then to use these to help them master the subject material. This in turn helps students to gain in confidence and self-motivation as they discover their own capacity to learn well.

If students are working toward exams, I first seek to establish what a student feels his or her weaknesses are, and then focus tuition on areas or skills which will help them to plug the gaps or grow in strength and confidence. If more general support is needed, I will combine working with core material with a focus on ensuring that they have a solid grasp of the assessment objectives, question-types, and what the exam will look like, so that they can go into the exam confident and well-prepared. I also find that practice, practice, practice is essential, so we'll often work with past papers.

I seek always to establish clear lesson goals, and to review material learnt several times within each lesson, ensuring that the student feels comfortable with using the material learnt, rather than swamped by facts and lists!

Personal Description:
Native Russian, classically trained professional artist and language teacher. I'm a part-time teacher now with some afternoons and evenings free. I am very happy working with little ones as well as adults and believe that I can help them to achieve their potential for personal growth.

Teaching Experience:

Since 1991 in the listed subjects. I have gained experience in teaching adults and younger students both in formal context (I taught in schools and university degree courses) and less formal (evening and leisure courses). I have a good reputation in my local area as a professional tutor, with a client base of happy parents whose children I have taught.

Tutoring Approach:

Tutoring is tailored to suit individual needs and pace, to make learning enjoyable and rewarding. I believe that an open, friendly and relaxed atmosphere is essential for successful learning. At the same time, clearly defined goals have to be set, worked towards and reached during each lesson. I always seek to make my classes varied, challenging and stimulating, drawing upon as wide a range of learning skills and strategies as possible.

Personal Description:
I began my combat training at thirteen at a local boxing club in Llanelli, learning the vital skills and discipline that have kept me working in the fitness and self-defence field for over ten years.

At the age of fifteen I joined the Cobra-Kai Freestyle Kickboxing Federation, and trained religiously under the regime of instructor Lee Martin (4th degree black belt). In 1997 I went on to win the European martial arts title (WUMA Federation), held at Cheltenham. On my return, and after numerous local newspaper photos and write-ups, I received the greatest honour any keen young martial artist dreams of: becoming a fully-fledged black belt.

Teaching Experience:

At the young age of 18, I opened my very own kickboxing club at Llanelli Leisure Centre, for all levels and ages. After showcasing my skills, not only as a martial artist but also a teacher, I received my 2nd degree black belt. Starting with just one weekly ninety-minute class, I now run four classes per week. Over the years I have helped created more than ten black belt students, two welsh champions and one British champion.

In 1997, I ran my first all women's self-defence class, training women of all ages and physical abilities. I continued my classes, eventually including mixed gender and young persons training.

After undergoing a series of courses from Securicare, Frontline, Venue security and BIIAB City and Guilds, I have become a Level 7 Conflict Management Trainer. I have worked alongside various organisations such as the NHS, covering the majority of hospitals and clinics throughout Carmarthenshire.

As well as training, I have since achieved my 4th degree black belt, opened my own one-to-one gym, and become an advanced level 3 personal trainer through Fitness Wales (REPs certified), teaching private lessons of fitness, weight training, martial arts, self-defence, Pilates, and much more.

Tutoring Approach:

Teaching has been a big part of my life from a very young age. It has given me great pleasure and accomplishment. At times I have found it difficult, but at the same time rewarding. I have always given it 100% and believe that to be a good teacher you must be able to learn from the positives and even the negatives.

Personal Description:
I have recently returned to the UK after a number of years of teaching overseas, mainly in schools in the Arabian Gulf. I began teaching in the mid-1970's, so have a wealth of experience of a range of educational qualifications. I also have experience in managing schools, up to and including at Principal level.

Teaching Experience:

Throughout my career, I have always taught English Language and Literature, mostly to Secondary age students, covering O and A Levels, GCSE and IGCSE, as well as TOEFL, IELTS and US SATs. I have taught large classes in UK secondary schools, as well as small groups in international schools. My students have frequently succeeded up to and beyond their expectations at all levels.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe that one-to-one tutoring helps, above all, to encourage and support a young person, who may be feeling that they are not succeeding in their school studies. I prefer to tutor in the student's home environment as this helps in boosting his or her confidence. I have tutored many students throughout my career, and I would say that my approach is demanding but fair.

Personal Description:
Hi! I'm an Oxford graduate with a 2:1 in English Language and Literature. I graduated in 2013 and went on to study an MSc in Psychology at Oxford Brookes, in which I achieved a distinction. Since then, I have been working as an administrator and looking for ways to continue to engage with the subjects that interest me. Tutoring appealed to me at once as a rewarding way to put the skills that I learnt during my degree and masters to good use. Reading English at Oxford has honed my critical thinking, analytical abilities and study skills, while my masters has given me experience in data analysis and conducting research. In 2012 I also co-wrote a novel which was recently published in the UK, which really deepened my understanding of how to write effectively. I'd love to tutor others and help them to develop these skills too! In my spare time, I like to read and write fiction. My main address is in AL7, but I am also happy to tutor in Barnet and the surrounding area. As well as tutoring, I also specialise in editing, copy-editing and proofreading academic essays, job applications and CVs, and articles.

Teaching Experience:

I have successfully completed an assessment for the selective tutoring agency Blue Tutors. During the assessment I had to demonstrate my tutoring ability to a trained assessor, who described my communication skills as 'excellent'.
In my final term at Oxford, I volunteered with Schools Plus, a program which runs after school tuition sessions for struggling students in areas of economic disadvantage. I spent half a term working with GCSE English students, tutoring them on an individual basis in the run up to their January modules. As part of the selection process for the program, I also attended tutoring training.
When I was in the 6th form (in 2009), I also volunteered as a classroom assistant in my school. I was working with students who were having difficulty with essay-based subjects like History and English. I worked with two students in their History classes, helping them to understand the work they were set in class and working through it with them. I had to use my knowledge of French to help one student who had not yet learnt to speak fluent English, translating the teacher's instructions for her and helping her with words she did not understand. Between 2009-10, I helped to run two after-school classes for Key Stage 2 pupils, one in Literacy and Art and another in Drama. This involved planning and delivering lessons to classes of about 5-10 children, and keeping them engaged with the topics they were learning through activities designed to both teach and entertain.

Tutoring Approach:

My experience of tutoring in the past has shown me the importance of patience and respect in teaching. Especially in essay-based subjects, it is crucial that a teacher allows their pupils space to develop their own ideas, and respects their independent thought. Learning by rote has only limited usefulness: the best way to excel at a subject is to understand it, so I always explain concepts as fully as possible and move at the tutee's pace, making sure that they have properly grasped each concept or issue before moving on to the next. My Schools Plus training emphasised the idea that the goal of tutoring is to help a student to help themselves, enabling them to tackle problems rather than solving things for them. I think that this is fantastic advice, and it is a rule which I always try to bear in mind when tutoring.

I have been involved in computers and IT for 23 years. I was first of all a professional computer games programmer / designer before moving into my current role as an IT Solutions Architect. Over the last 17 years in IT consultancy, I developed have a breadth and depth of knowledge in IT and computing which is hard to find almost anywhere in the UK having dealt with almost all types of systems and aspects of IT.

I'm not able to teach you all the intricacies of the Microsoft Office products like Excel or Word, but I can train you in system design, system support, software development and pretty much anything in between. I have detailed experience in virtually all Microsoft operating systems and applications. I am also very experienced on VMware products. I am also able to assist your training in application and web development in C, C#, VB, scripting and assembler (68000 & 6502).

Teaching Experience:

17 years of mentoring and training junior staff on systems including Microsoft operating systems and applications.
Delivered a classroom based Lotus Notes course for Computacentre.

Tutoring Approach:

I would first of all need to know what your learning requirements are. What is it you want to know about and to what level? From that point, I would create a training plan for you to reach that goal.

Personal Description:
I have recently completed my undergraduate studies with a First in History at the university of Kent. I have always been committed to my academic career, being amongst the highest-attaining students at both school and university. I am a voracious reader of both fiction and non-fiction; aside from this I enjoy films, rugby union and competitive gaming.

I enjoy helping people to learn and develop, and would be happy to help tutees with specific exams or assignments, to provide more general advice on techniques and skills, help tutees achieve a deeper understanding of a subject or offering. I have experience of proofreading and editing at university level.

Teaching Experience:

I attended sixth-form at Chancellor's School in Brookmans Park, which ran a programme in which students assisted with the teaching of a lower-school class, as well as a "buddy system", where sixth-formers mentored and assisted 3 new students with transition to senior school.

At university I strove to take an active part in my education in both university-organised and extra-curricular activities. I was frequently commended for my contributions to seminars and I often joined study-groups on my own initiative, helping others with their understanding of the various courses and with exam technique. I also frequently aided other students by proof-reading and editing their essays and assignments, to help them better apply the technique and style that was needed to attain the highest grades.

I am the Vice-President of ISHA (the International Students of History Association). This organisation arranges events to bring history students from across Europe together; participants take part in workshops, presenting papers then hosting a debate on the points raised by their work. I enjoyed these events immensely, not only for the opportunity to learn from and to teach students from varied backgrounds with differing approaches towards the study of history, but also for the support and the opportunity for development that they offer to students. I also helped edit ISHA's journal 'Carnival'. As well as giving me valuable skills in teaching, discussion and presentation of ideas, ISHA also gave me valuable experience of academic interaction with people for whom English is not their first language, teaching me to to alter my vocabulary and forms of expression to better convey ideas.

Tutoring Approach:

My approach to tutoring is based on my own experiences of studying and helping other students at school and university. I aim to teach exam technique and preparation advice, alongside essay-writing skills and time management. I have broad knowledge of English and History and can supplement other teaching to create a strong base of understanding to help tutees achieve desired grades. I also feel it is worth-while to go beyond the syllabus, as unusual, but pertinent, information can be the determining factor in pushing a candidate up a grade barrier.

Personal Description:
I am a keen Linguist who is currently studying a joint Languages Degree at the University of Chester. I have studied and lived in China, and speak Chinese to a semi-fluent level. I also speak Spanish to a high degree and have studied each language for 7+ years

Teaching Experience:

When living in China, I had two part time teaching jobs, teaching Chinese children to speak english. The parents of these Children wanted a Native English speaker with a good grasp of Chinese. I find that I learn best when teaching, and thus it is my primary method of learning something new.

Tutoring Approach:

I can amend my teaching style to however the child learns best. I am most comfortable producing learning aids such as powerpoint presentations, and then explaining them thoroughly, but if a different approach was required, I could find or create learning aids to best suite the child, be they Audio based or Visual.
