Hello! I'm Nicole. I'm a bit of a history and literature geek (and I hope to convert you!!)

I studied History and English at the University of Oxford (Wadham College). I graduated with Double First Class Honours in 2010, and came top in my academic year: no mean feat!

I believe that my excellent grades reflect several important characteristics: my exceptional academic ability, my high academic standards, my mastery of study-skills, and my dedicated and conscientious work ethic. I look to encourage all of these qualities in my students.

More importantly though, my outstanding results are a result of my absolute love for, knowledge of, and commitment to, my subjects. I absolutely love to learn, and aim to help my students to find a similar excitement and passion for their studies!

Teaching Experience:

Over the past few years, I have privately tutored a number of students. My students have come from a diverse age range - spanning from the very young to the much older - and I feel comfortable working with children, teenagers and adults.

I have tutored students in History; English Literature; English Language; reading comprehension; speaking, listening, reading and writing skills; primary level Maths.

I have also tutored 11+ applicants, for which I have a 100% success rate.

I also have experience in mentoring potential Oxbridge applicants, and advising university peers and younger students on study and revision skills.

After graduating, I worked full-time as a Cover Supervisor in a secondary school. That means that I took classes in all subjects across the secondary curriculum, for students ranging from 11 - 16 years of age, and I also supported teaching in A-Level English classes. Seeing up to 150 students in a day was a challenging and rewarding experience in which I was constantly thinking on my feet, and successfully applying my teaching skills to brand new material (in familiar and unfamiliar subjects). This job also gave me the opportunity to observe and work with students of all abilities and learning styles, and to learn how to adapt my teaching style accordingly.

I have worked on a number of projects which involved education, support, or leadership of young people. These have included:

- Working with and supervising over 120 foreign children and teenagers whilst employed by a Cambridge-based language summer school as a programme coordinator and social leader.

- Peer support leader within the APAUSE programme ('Added Power and Understanding in Sex Education') which offered sex education and empowerment lessons for younger teenagers.

- Co-director role in secondary level production of 'Les Miserables' with responsibility for over 100 children and teenagers aged between 11 and 18.

- Co-director role in community theatre production of 'West Side Story' with responsibility for working with approximately 50 children and teenagers.

- Assistant role for GCSE-level 'Speaking and Listening Days' which involved aiding teachers in helping students improve the quality of their English language GCSE assessed work.

Tutoring Approach:

I am passionate about learning - and look to encourage a similar excitement in my students. In History this might be through some particularly fascinating or gruesome details, or in English, through exploring a beautiful line of poetry.

I am very individual-student orientated, so I seek always to establish each individual's aims for tutoring, and then we will work together toward these. For one student, this might be to know how to deconstruct a poem; for another, how to write a good essay.

With some students, I will plan structured lessons, whereas others prefer simply to earmark time with a dedicated tutor, before deciding what to do themselves at the time. Perhaps they will bring their homework, a study-book, or something they are stuck with - whatever the case, I aim always to listen and respond to the needs of each individual student.

With all my students (but especially the younger ones) I am a big believer in making learning FUN! I therefore often design lessons which use a variety of practical learning activities to keep them stimulated, rather than just relying on book-learning. In the past, I've mummified a teddy, conducted a press conference, and taught times-tables via Grandmother's footsteps! I find this to be particularly effective for students who struggle with concentration.

I believe that when offered education through the right methods, everyone is able to maximise their own ability to learn. Having completed a full-time degree and worked in secondary education, I am equipped with plenty of different learning methods. With my students, I therefore look to discover which approaches work well for them, and then to use these to help them master the subject material. This in turn helps students to gain in confidence and self-motivation as they discover their own capacity to learn well.

If students are working toward exams, I first seek to establish what a student feels his or her weaknesses are, and then focus tuition on areas or skills which will help them to plug the gaps or grow in strength and confidence. If more general support is needed, I will combine working with core material with a focus on ensuring that they have a solid grasp of the assessment objectives, question-types, and what the exam will look like, so that they can go into the exam confident and well-prepared. I also find that practice, practice, practice is essential, so we'll often work with past papers.

I seek always to establish clear lesson goals, and to review material learnt several times within each lesson, ensuring that the student feels comfortable with using the material learnt, rather than swamped by facts and lists!

My teaching strategy usually involves engaging the student in critical thinking early on, as I believe this is the key to understanding, and I will never "tell" a student what he should do, or why this is like that, but to direct his thinking so that he/she understands why this is the way it is, and why should he/she act that way. I do not believe in memorisation being the main way of teaching in some countries, as this usually does not prepare people for university and life in general, specially in science and maths. Of course, there's always a degree of memorisation in every subject, but I try to keep it to a minimum. This also depends on every student, and I ultimately asses my strategy individually for each student.

I have a passion for Science and hope to go into laboratory research. I recently finished my Masters by Research in Biological Sciences at the University of Manchester, graduating with Distinction.
In June 2015 I finished my BSc in Biology from Imperial College London with First Class Honours. . My A level grades were A* A A in Biology, Chemistry and Mathematics (respectively). I am committed and enthusiastic in everything I do and I love new experiences and challenges.

Teaching Experience:

I have been a private tutor for over 5 years and have had over a dozen students, ranging from 4-28 years of age.

In addition to my professional tutoring:
-In the lab I teach new practical techniques and knowledge to students and my peers
-I am training to become an assistant instructor in Women's Self Defence with the charity that I do martial arts with
-I have a younger sister whom I have helped with academia since she was a child, improving her knowledge and confidence.

Tutoring Approach:

Tutoring is something that I thoroughly enjoy. It makes me feel like I have made a difference when I am able to help someone better understand and apply something that, up until then, teachers or peers have failed to do.
A large part of my role as a tutor, particularly with younger students, is to improve their self-confidence, I give them additional knowledge, confidence to apply and convey it and confidence to ask questions.

I believe that the path to exam success involves three things:
-Thorough knowledge of subject material
-Exam technique (what to write/say to get the marks)
-On-the-day performance

I feel that my job as a tutor is to assess these points in my students and to help them with whatever stage they require to boost their performance.

YOUNGER STUDENTS: when tutoring children I find that it is important to continuously change the activity or topic every 5-10 minutes so that the student is engaged and gets the most out of the lessons. I have learned many of the techniques for tutoring children during my training and experience as a Young Scout Leader.
In my lessons I play games based on the material and use tools such as white boards, the feedback I receive is that my students really enjoy and look forward to our lessons.

SECONDARY LEVEL & OLDER STUDENTS: I feel it is important for my students to understand how the topic they are learning fits into the wider picture. Often I find that the reason my students struggled with some subject areas is that they were not taught the broader concepts or knowledge was assumed, this is particularly common with Chemistry. I aim to fill this gap so that students learn and understand the syllabus learning points as opposed to just memorizing them.
With Maths I go through many practice questions with my students. I set a question and we will work on it together or independently, then I will give the answer and show my working. My students find it very helpful that I work alongside them and provide them with a full solution including method, as opposed to just an answer.

I have been tutoring for 3 years, and really enjoy teaching. I teach younger years at medical school, as well as school students, especially in German and Biology. I like to focus on areas that the student finds hard, and work in a way that they understand and enjoy - for me, learning is all about having fun and loving your subject, which comes with a bit of effort over a period of time. I think that every student can learn to enjoy their subjects, and I hope I can be the one to inspire them.

I am a Japanese language teacher, a native speaker who studied for a bachelor degree in art in Portland, Oregon. I have lived in Tokyo and Osaka where I worked in the fashion industry and import/export business. I now live in England with my husband and two children.

Teaching Experience:

I have experience teaching Japanese to both adults and children one-to-one and in small groups. A typical lesson will include practice of general or topic focused conversations, related grammar study, key vocabulary usage and pronunciation. As an award winning student of calligraphy, my speciality is teaching the Japanese writing system.

Tutoring Approach:

I have a patient and friendly manner allowing students to develop at their own pace while giving lots of encouragement to make sure students achieve their goals. I am flexible as to the content of lessons and will tailor-make courses to reflect students character and interests making the learning experience as enjoyable as possible.

Personal Description:
Hello! My name is Kathryn, I am 32 years old and hold a doctorate in quantitative fisheries science. Currently I am a postdoctoral researcher at Bangor University Ocean Sciences, conducting a systematic review and meta-analysis in fisheries science. I love my postdoc and I have a passion for teaching. My career goal is to become a lecturer. At the moment I don't lecture within the university so I would like to tutor, which is something I have lots of experience in over the past years and is something that I love doing. I particularly enjoy enabling others with learning and building a relationship through that. Scholarship is something very close to my heart with a personal passion for learning. I feel privileged to be able to help others and enjoy working with different styles and learning techniques. I am a very understanding person and like to make anyone I work with feel positive about their learning. I can work to the pace of the student and am happy to adapt my teaching and expectations to what is best for the student, which is decided upon by both of us.

Teaching Experience:

I have tutoring experience from the last 9 years where I started in London teaching GCSE biology and A-Level psychology. Since then I have tutored many different fields of biological and ecological sciences at graduate level (Bachelor level). I have had experience delivering tens of lectures at the National University of Ireland, Galway, and Bangor University. I have marked coursework and provided teaching and support for multiple practical sessions. I have a particularly engaging attitude and am always available for extra support for all levels of students. I started my teaching career as a classroom assistant when I was studying at Cardiff University and since then have always had a passion for helping others learn. The first time someone understands a concept or develops their own ideas as a result of it is an empowering step and can be used to fuel a thirst for more understanding. I have worked with individuals and small groups, larger groups and classrooms as well as lecture theaters.

Tutoring Approach:

My approach to tutoring is a student focused approach. Teaching should be conducted with the learner in mind. Everyone learns in different ways. some people like to learn on their own, others through discussions or interactive set-ups. Most people don't know how best they learn as this is not a focus in current education, so this is something I will talk to the student about and something that we can identify and develop together. I create a safe learning environment where there is no such thing as a silly question or answer. I have a passion for people and learning should always be enjoyable, so my sessions reflect this. I understand the way that information is processed and make best use of presenting well organised information that is often re-capped and constantly placed in the wider context. Feedback is one of the best ways that a student can learn and encouraging self-feedback is something I feel strongly is a fantastic way to learn. I have a very positive attitude and am understanding and like to push my students. I will ensure that learning is maximised by tailoring it to the individual and I encourage different styles of working, for example marking your own work with a marking scheme, discussions, questioning the status quo and what if scenarios. I also enjoy receiving feedback from the students so that I can constantly check that I am making the most of our time together. Overall my sessions are applicable, fun and challenging, and no two sessions are the same.
