We have about 50 students in each of years 12 and 13. 26 of our Physics students gained grade As at AS Level in 2006. 48% A and A* at A2 Level in June 2011. This is twice the Welsh average which puts us at the top of tree. 67% A*,A or B in 2012 in my class.Three of my students have won the Institute of Physics prize for the highest A Level marks in Wales with several gaining 600/600. I also teach A Level Mathematics (Pure and Mechanics) and A Level Electronics. Previously I was head of Mathematics, Computing and Physical Sciences but I preferred teaching to administration so I returned to full-time teaching. I like to entertain and inspire! I am married with three children. I have a wide range of interests from sport to photography.

I'm an avid reader and whilst I enjoy contemporary fiction, I have a real love of the classics and return to them again and again for both solace and inspiration.

My spare time is taken up with dancing and DJ'ing which I do on a semi-professional basis, organising classes, workshops and social dance events in the UK and continental Europe.

Teaching Experience:

I spent nine years co-owning and running a private language school in which I taught English both one-to-one and in small groups. I then continued to teach English freelance for two years, in the UK and in Italy. From 2002 to 2009, I worked on continued professional development for GPs and Primary Care team members, organising and delivering educational programmes and workshops. I currently tutor students and am also training in a new methodology to deliver fast-track intensive literacy programmes in secondary schools.

Tutoring Approach:

My main concern is that your confidence and belief in your own ability increases, so that what seemed difficult becomes easy and what seemed impossible becomes achievable. I am 33 years old and have a 1st in French (BA Hons) from Nottingham University, with a distinction in spoken language. As well as a year spent working in Paris, I have worked in French speaking West Africa. I currently work part time for a charity and have a broad range of interests from gardening and cycling, to music and French culture (of course!).

Teaching Experience:

I have been teaching French privately since April 2011. I primarily teach GCSE students, including students who struggle with French because of dyslexia. I have developed a variety of creative methods to make sure my teaching is as clear and as interesting as possible and have helped students improve their marks by up to 2 grades. I have taught to above A level standard and have a very high level of French.

At the start of 2017 I worked for two months as a supply teacher at the International School of Ouagadougou (Burkina Faso). As well as private tuition and teaching I have volunteered as a mentor for young offenders. During this time I tried to find ways to teach some of the young people basic skills without them even really realising it (i.e. teaching basic arithmetic through carpentry lessons).

Tutoring Approach:

I tailor teaching sessions to the needs and interests of my pupils. This influences both the content of the teaching, and teaching style. I use a range of teaching techniques and feel strongly that teaching should be fun as well as informative.

While I ensure that the material covered matches the GCSE/A Level syllabus, lessons can be tailored to other needs if the pupil is not studying for the purpose of exams.

Hi! I'm an Oxford graduate with a 2:1 in English Language and Literature. I graduated in 2013 and went on to study an MSc in Psychology at Oxford Brookes, in which I achieved a distinction. Since then, I have been working as an administrator and looking for ways to continue to engage with the subjects that interest me. Tutoring appealed to me at once as a rewarding way to put the skills that I learnt during my degree and masters to good use. Reading English at Oxford has honed my critical thinking, analytical abilities and study skills, while my masters has given me experience in data analysis and conducting research. In 2012 I also co-wrote a novel which was recently published in the UK, which really deepened my understanding of how to write effectively. I'd love to tutor others and help them to develop these skills too! In my spare time, I like to read and write fiction. My main address is in AL7, but I am also happy to tutor in Barnet and the surrounding area. As well as tutoring, I also specialise in editing, copy-editing and proofreading academic essays, job applications and CVs, and articles.

Teaching Experience:

I have successfully completed an assessment for the selective tutoring agency Blue Tutors. During the assessment I had to demonstrate my tutoring ability to a trained assessor, who described my communication skills as 'excellent'.
In my final term at Oxford, I volunteered with Schools Plus, a program which runs after school tuition sessions for struggling students in areas of economic disadvantage. I spent half a term working with GCSE English students, tutoring them on an individual basis in the run up to their January modules. As part of the selection process for the program, I also attended tutoring training.
When I was in the 6th form (in 2009), I also volunteered as a classroom assistant in my school. I was working with students who were having difficulty with essay-based subjects like History and English. I worked with two students in their History classes, helping them to understand the work they were set in class and working through it with them. I had to use my knowledge of French to help one student who had not yet learnt to speak fluent English, translating the teacher's instructions for her and helping her with words she did not understand. Between 2009-10, I helped to run two after-school classes for Key Stage 2 pupils, one in Literacy and Art and another in Drama. This involved planning and delivering lessons to classes of about 5-10 children, and keeping them engaged with the topics they were learning through activities designed to both teach and entertain.

Tutoring Approach:

My experience of tutoring in the past has shown me the importance of patience and respect in teaching. Especially in essay-based subjects, it is crucial that a teacher allows their pupils space to develop their own ideas, and respects their independent thought. Learning by rote has only limited usefulness: the best way to excel at a subject is to understand it, so I always explain concepts as fully as possible and move at the tutee's pace, making sure that they have properly grasped each concept or issue before moving on to the next. My Schools Plus training emphasised the idea that the goal of tutoring is to help a student to help themselves, enabling them to tackle problems rather than solving things for them. I think that this is fantastic advice, and it is a rule which I always try to bear in mind when tutoring.

My name is Jasmine, I am 19 years old, and I am currently studying TESOL and Japanese at York St John University. My career goal is to become a translator, and I am working hard to help that happen. My hobbies are reading, writing, and music, which is also how I spend most of my free time (that and running around after my two younger brothers!).

Teaching Experience:

Though I have had no professional experience tutoring, during secondary school I was a mentor for helping younger children with reading and writing. I also have several language partners that I help to enhance their English skills as well as correcting their grammar. My university course includes the TESOL certificate, which specialises in teaching English as a second language, improving my teaching skills.

Tutoring Approach:

As stated previously, while I have never professionally tutored, I think this role would be good for me. I am patient and persevering, and understand through my own experiences that it is not always possible to learn through one method, but instead, there are many ways to learn new information that is tailored to your needs. While I am young meaning I may have less experience in this field, I also think an advantage of my age is that I am very open minded.

Personal Description:
I am a fully qualified experienced maths teacher with a BSc in Mathematics. I have experience in intervention and one to one tutoring within a high school setting, delivering the intervention sessions in one high school and taking the responsibility of intervention coordinator in another. I have also prepared small groups of pupils for Further/Additional Maths at GCSE Level. I have been very successful in improving under achieving students to achieve their target grade both as a tutor and teacher. For example I took over a GCSE class which was a bottom set who I started teaching at the start of year 11. At that point the highest grade in the class was a grade F. By the end of the year everyone improved significantly and several gained a grade C. As a father I know how important our children achieving their best is to all parents.

Teaching Experience:

During my teaching career I have taught in 4 different high schools including schools with a sixth form. My first post was in a Lancashire High school where I was responsible for the intervention in Mathematics which involves helping small groups of pupils who are below target in Mathematics. My last GCSE group all achieved grade A*-C. (set 2 of 6)

My next post was in a Sefton High School and sixth form where I was responsible for organising and running intervention. My GCSE group (set 5/bottom set) all achieved at least three levels of progress from their starting point and 3 pupils achieved a grade C (This was above their target grade).

In my final year I was teaching 3 GCSE classes. A higher group in which all achieved B-A* as well as a vocational group and a bottom set where some pupils achieved grade C and others made their expected progress.

I have tutored both in school and privately with a lot of success. One example was a private student who came to me having achieved a grade F at the end of year 10. A year later she achieved a C in her GCSE exam. Successes from the exam results in 2016 include an A level student moving from a E to a B. A GCSE student moving from an F to a C who I started tutoring in February. Another GCSE pupil moving from a C to an A.

I am fully up to date with the changes in exams at GCSE Level for the new 9-1 GCSE`s and the changes in the sats for Primary school pupils.

Tutoring Approach:

I want all my students to be able to develop their understanding of mathematics rather than just learning how to answer a question. I try to work with their class teacher in following the methods they are being taught at school but also realise that different methods may be appropriate if they are struggling. I set homework weekly which is assessed at the start each session unless it is a longer piece or exam paper which is taken away and marked and brought back to the next session. I plan topics which are linked to previous learning in order to develop the bigger picture of mathematics but have excellent subject knowledge so I'm able to change my plan if the student wishes to look at another area that might have arisen as a problem in school/college. I also like my students to be proactive and get in touch if they wish to cover a particular topic which wasn't mentioned at the end of the previous session. I have a good relationship with all the people I tutor, they are at ease to ask questions and praise is central to help raise confidence.

Price stated is for pupils based within 5 miles by road of PR7 4.

For pupils who live between 5-8 miles from PR7 4 an addition 5 per session is payable.

For pupils living 8-12 miles an addition 10 per session is payable.

40 minute lessons are now being offered at 22 with the same additional charges for distance.
