Personal Description:
I am a graduate in Politics, English and German with an International House qualification to teach English as a foreign language to adults.

Since 2001 I have been engaged on a university research and publishing project, based in London and Cambridge, that charts the reception of British and Irish authors in Europe, from Francis Bacon to James Joyce.

A significant part of my professional role involves editing and proof-reading academic texts, and I'm happy to undertake this for tutees.

I am also a freelance researcher, writer and curator of exhibitions on contemporary social and political cartoons, such as 'Coping with the Relations', commissioned by the Goethe-Institut and British Council as an international touring exhibition. Amongst other publications I co-authored the book *Deutschland und seine Nachbarn* in 2000 as a resource for political education in German schools.

I am an enthusiastic European with a keen interest in global affairs.

Teaching Experience:

I have been tutoring students in English, Politics and German for many years, as well as working as a business language trainer in companies across London.

Previously I taught English, German and Politics in England (GCSE and A-level), and English as a foreign language at all levels in grammar schools in Austria and Germany. I also taught English as a foreign language to trainee German teachers of English and for Academic & Special Purposes (law, business studies, social sciences) as well as British cultural studies at the University of Osnabruck, Germany, for 8 years.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe patience, appropriate pace and empathetic attention to an individual's learning needs are essential for anyone helping others to understand often complex ideas and concepts. I also believe successful learning results from both the learner's and teacher's motivation, enthusiasm and interest in the subject. These are principles that inform my role as a tutor.

I much prefer one-to-one or small-group tutoring, particularly where if a foreign language is involved. I believe the intensity of experience such interaction provides is the next best thing to direct engagement with a foreign language in the context in which it is naturally spoken. This is borne out by my own experience as a foreign-language learner.

Personal Description:
Hi, everyone,The academic year is now a term old and things are ticking along nicely for almost all my students of 2016-17. Sadly two have had to drop out of school/college studies because of personal issues which is sad, when the time is right, these two very bright individuals will come back to studying, I'm sure.

I am more busy than ever this year but do have perhaps one or two spaces for students keen to just improve or to transform themselves and their fortunes. However bad things seem, I can show you how make the best of your talents.

Craig

TWO EXAM PAPER NOTICES

A couple of examination paper notices.

1. I am now OCR trained for the new AS level source/essay paper. Obviously this has given me a clear insight into how it's marked and how students need to approach it to be successful.
2. Secondly, the ED Excel Y13 A2 sources & essay paper (three secondary sources): I worked with four students on this last year and achieved spectacular results (these pupils can be contacted; some won't be able to put referees up here because I found all 4 of them via word of mouth and the UK's other major tutoring site). I'm very happy to report that I worked hard and thought hard on refining my advice on the paper and it has clearly paid off handsomely. Do contact me for details; I can pass these on to you prior to your making a decision on whether to engage me (or not as the case may be). Naturally anyone re-taking the A2 paper in 2017 can benefit from this. The new EdExcel History exam has a similar paper so this year's cohort of Y13 students should be able to benefit too.

Note. Because I'm away for the next 3 weeks carrying out research in London and Reading for my PhD I will not be able to begin lessons this year until the last week of September.

Plus:

Important policy change! If your young one or you, the student, is/are one who is not prepared to be coached and trained as our Olympic athletes are - and by this I mean that the performer puts themselves in the hands of the coach and doesn't try to tell them how to do the job - then please do not get in touch: simply pass on to another tutor somewhere else on this site.

---

And now, The Pitch!

So, my name is Craig, a very dedicated one-to-one tutor of History, Politics and English. I offer an exceptionally high level of expertise as a history, politics (and English) teacher, teacher of essay writing, exam writing and exam taking. This is based on well over two decades of experience in schools and in homes. Though I have been teaching a long time, I am continually striving to improve the quality of my work, constantly analyzing the effect of my advice on performance and trying to perfect the art and craft of the job.

When not tutoring, most of my time is spent working (hard!) as a student too! I am just about to begin the third year of my PhD, supervised by Professor Tony Collins of De Montfort University, Leicester, undertaking research in 20th century British history. (Rugby fans might like to note at this point that Tony is the number one rugby historian - of all codes - in the world. All his books are very well worth reading.)

I am exceptionally well qualified. I have an MA (2011) in History and am now two years into my doctoral studies. I have written fiction and non-fiction. I have had experience in being an A level marker with an exam board. I have had long experience in teaching and preparing whole History & Govnt. & Politics year groups for A level, producing outstanding results.

I take on all types of students. Some need a lot of training, some need to be dragged away from a collision-course with failure, some need finessing, some need waking up, some need inspiring, some need a boost in confidence; some need more intellectual stimulation; all can and do improve their writing.

My chief strengths are: 1. I know how to teach students to write. 2. I know how to prepare them for exams. 3. My methods are clear, simple and work beautifully. 4. I care very much about the progression of my students. 5. I treat my work with them with the utmost seriousness. 6. But I'm a human being with a sense of humour! 7. I am very, very experienced. 8. As a parent of three children who have gone through the school and university experience, I understand what both the student and the parent is going through.

I am very happy to work with students online. I have found it to work extremely well.

More on my current research project...
I am currently working on doctoral research into the BBC, sport and social class, 1922-64, with Tony Collins at De Montfort University, Leicester. He is the director of DMU's International Centre for Sports History & Culture, a department of world renown, and the leading British powerhouse of sports history. I am very proud to be working with Tony and within the department. Undergrad students should note that I am working under one of the world's best historians, a 3-time winner of the prestigious Aberdare Prize for Sports Books.

Becoming a student again, beginning with the masters degree course at De Montfort University in 2010 has really helped my teaching. As well as keeping on top of developments in academic history. I am much better read! I know more! It has also taken me right back in touch with what it feels like to be a student and all that follows from that. It has also enabled me to extend my tutoring potential to undergraduates and masters students.

I'm happily married with 3 children fully grown (it's only their father who's lagging behind).

Teaching Experience:

I taught for 24 years in secondary schools in Bromley, Kent and Derbyshire where I now live. History was my specialism but I was head of Politics for a number of years in the last part of my school career. I also taught Geography, Economics, English and R.E.

Since beginning to tutor students, I have taught history, Government & Politics and English (including basic literacy skills to a young person with dyslexia). Courses taught have mostly been those at GCSE and A level.

I have taught a wide range of topics within French, German, Russian and British history. The list includes the usual suspects: causes of World Wars 1 and 2, Hitler and the Third Reich, the French Revolution (and its causes) and Napoleon; also Tsarist Russia, the Russian revolution and Stalin as well as the European Reformation, France in the 16th century, Louis XIV and aspects of Irish and Chinese history and 19th century France, plus 20th century USA. politics (Boom and Bust, New Deal and Post-War Boom, and also the Witchcraft Persecution in Europe (1550-1680).

In terms of British history I am very much up to speed with all aspects of its 20th century political history (high politics, parties, electoral history, social history & economic history, right through to the 21st century, in fact); I have also taught most aspects of 19th history, social, economic and political. For the last decade and a half of my school-teaching career I taught the A level course in 16th and 17th century - The Tudors, James I, Charles I, Causes of the English Civil War, Charles II, James II & the Glorious Revolution, the reigns of William & Mary & Queen Anne.

I have recently added 19th century British politics (Reform Bill through Peel, Palmerston, Disraeli and Gladstone to Salisbury) and Witchcraft in Early Modern Europe to my "roster" of topics.

Since becoming a PhD student my expertise level in terms of content knowledge has leaped forward in 20th century British history. However...

...it isn't the historical content of the course that matters so much: technique is the key; know-how; how to write; how to take an exam; how to prepare for the whole exam period; how to approach the whole thing mentally, psychologically; how to be the best you can be; how to be successful - end of story!

I have worked with students on exam preparation and revision, coursework planning and execution and essay writing techniques. It is here that the battle to improve and to reach a fulfillment of potential, often with the reward of high grades, is usually won.

Tutoring Approach:

I don't tinker around the margins of issues. I give students something all those who come for help require: a method to use to dispose of the problems posed by the issue of writing that dreaded thing: the essay! Not a tinkering round the edges of the thing, a tip here, a bit of advice there, but a comprehensive yet simple and absolutely clear set of actions and principles through which the student can fulfill their potential: show the examiner what they know and understand of the topic.

Following on from the above, my approach to tutoring begins and ends with the drive to be successful. If I did not unfailingly improve students, help them to achieve the grades they want and need I would not be writing this.

In between comes what we might describe as philosophy and methods. It's hard to write about methods without immediately mentioning what I suppose might be my strongest "offer" (I don't much like that word but there, I've used it). As a schoolteacher I developed a unique but simple method of essay planning and writing that achieved stunning results. So successful has it been over 20 years that I am astonished that no one else seems to have found it. But in my experience up to February 2013 no teacher has. Essay writing is still something that many, many students find difficult and confusing. It really does not need to be this way.

Obviously content issues are hugely important and here I rely on my communication skills which have yet to let me down! These, naturally, go hand in hand with a knowledge of British and European history across a variety of years which has grown over recent years particularly through my MA studies, my PhD research and through working with students on a range of historical periods, topics and people. I find myself to be adaptable to different types of students. I am able to adapt my language and my technique to fit the situation. I am also somewhat stubborn in that I never give up on solving a problem. If we have to go over time, so be it!

Finally, some more of my personal philosophies of teaching. I believe that students generally do not achieve their potential. With each student I aim to take them to standards (and grades) that they did not think were possible. Without exception I push, push and push until we run out of time as we inevitably do. I also do not believe in lost causes. Much can be achieved in a very short space of time. I have seen this happen over and over again.

There is much more to be said but that, I hope, will do for now.

Craig

Personal Description:
I am a qualified teacher of English with many years of study, research and training in some of the world's top universities. My qualifications include a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree in English Literature and the Postgraduate Certificate of Education (PGCE) in English, including Media Studies and Drama. My Initial Teacher Training covered all aspects of English and all abilities in the 11-18 age range. My interests, of benefit to many students especially at university level, include Critical Theory, Classical Literature, and African Literature. I have guided many students doing research and proof-read their dissertations. I have also taken the official training for one-to-one tutors rolled out by the government to complement classroom teaching. I also have experience as a GCSE English examiner for Edexcel and gained the status of Senior Examiner serving as Team Leader from the June 2013 exam series.

Teaching Experience:

My first teaching appointment came in 1988 in Cameroon where I taught English and African Literature, becoming an 'A' Level examiner for the Cameroon GCE examination board in 1990. I later took the Initial Teacher Training (ITT) leading to the PGCE, finishing my last year as Education Student of the Year in my university and receiving a national commendation for the quality of my work. I have since taught in different schools in Kent and Medway, preparing students for exams such as Functional Skills, IELTS, GCSE, 'A' Level, IB and AEA. I have also given one-to-one tuition to looked-after teenagers under a government scheme as well as taught in a secure unit for which, in addition to enhanced disclosure CRBs, I was vetted over a six month period. My first long-term (over 3 months) supply position involved teaching GCSE English, 'A' Level English Literature, and the IB. Most of my teaching has been in selective (grammar) schools. I have also given English lessons in my local community as part of an outreach programme organised for speakers of other languages by my church where I teach Bible Studies also.

Tutoring Approach:

I like to establish the needs of the students and carefully review all available assessment records. If the student is preparing for a special exam such as the GCSE, I would start by ensuring that the student is aware of the full requirements of the exam and establish a clear plan to cover these. Alongside any such programme, I believe strongly in incorporating the fundamentals of English grammar which are sometimes overlooked in formal teaching settings. I like to build a good rapport with the student so that they are comfortable revealing possible areas of weakness that we could turn into strengths.

TESTIMONIALS

"Over the past 3 years, I`ve had Italian lessons with a number of Italian teachers. Craig has by far been the most effective. He was quickly able to identify specific approaches to learning that would work for me and most importantly, keep me enthused! I am impressed by his preparation he doesn`t just bring the same text book to each lesson and set gap-filling exercises like previous teachers I`ve had - each lesson is carefully tailored to the subject in a way that makes the lesson interactive and memorable. Although I may know what the agenda for the lesson is, how he chooses to run the lesson is always a surprise. One subject leads on to the next as I progress but within each new topic, he skilfully and patiently recaps over previous topics to make sure I don`t forget what we`ve already touched on, which I really appreciate. Homework is set each week and because he makes it interesting, I look forward to the challenge of completing it. My ability to discuss, negotiate, tell stories fluently in Italian has really come on since working with Craig and my grasp of Italian grammar continues to improve thanks to his clear and concise explanations." Su, Walderslade

"Craig has been teaching me Spanish for nearly a year. One-on-one home tutoring enables me to fit lessons around my busy work and family life.
As a mature student I really appreciate Craig`s structured approach to language teaching tailored to my own specific learning pace" Neil, Lordswood

"I have been furthering my French with Craig for some time. He is very encouraging and likes to push you out of your comfort zone at times - which is a good thing as it gives confidence. Craig always makes learning fun and we can be discussing anything from the state of the country to man-eating spiders! He uses a variety of media and tailors lessons to your own requirements/needs or if there is something in particular you have a problem with he finds a way to explain it clearly." - Sharon, Chatham

"Craig is very professional, patient and understanding, I am an absolute beginner in French and after a couple of weeks of tutoring by Craig, I feel confident enough to ask in French some basic questions. Very big plus for me" Jacqueline, Walderslade

"Craig is friendly , helpful and moves you along at your pace" Martin & Lynda, Hempstead

Teaching Experience:

Experience teaching all ages, both in a school environment and one-to-one private tuition and with years of tutoring experience.

We can cater for beginner level right through to experienced speakers who want to brush up on their skills.

Tutoring Approach:

We teach using a variety of materials depending on level, such as class and activity books, grammar and vocabulary books, videos, Internet and printed exercises.
We do our best to tailor lessons to our student's needs. Most of our students are learning a language for a specific reason, such as for holidays or for exams. We design our lessons according to the reason and aim for learning.
We are happy to receive feedback from our students after each lesson and take into account any ideas for following lessons.

I also have a Durham Teaching and Learning Award, a peer- and student- nominated annual prize given to 3-5 teachers in the university to recognise outstanding achievement.

I've taught in both the Philosophy and Theology & Religion departments of Durham University, as well as teaching Introductions to Arts & Humanities for the Open University. I frequently teach study skills and help address specific students' concerns about how to improve.

My experience also includes work in the Access/Widening Participation arena, and I have taught a variety of topics for the 14-18 age range, including work on the Sutton Trust Summer School programme.

Tutoring Approach:

My approach is best summed up as "everyone is different". Finding out what someone enjoys, what they're good at, and how they think, is the first step in helping them get the most they can out of any topic or situation. The ways that people learn, and the things that fire their imaginations, are diverse - but the expectations of coursework and exams don't always recognise that. I see my job as not simply preparing people to pass a test or master a skill, but as helping them to discover what works best for them as a student, and giving them the confidence to approach new challenges successfully.

Personal Description:
I studied Theology at both Leeds Trinity College and Durham University, where I achieved a First Class Honours degree and later Merit. After doing regular guest teaching and classroom assistance, I took the PTLLS Level 4 at the Advance Training Academy and began tutoring in 2014. Since then I have taught people from Cramlington, Durham, Dunston, Gateshead, and Sunderland (to name just a few examples). Each of my students has steadily increased their grades, achieving A*-C.

My aim is to provide first quality tuition in Religious Studies and Philosophy and to help people become more confident in these subjects. I am an individual who is committed to making education a lasting experience rather than a lecture to be endured. My experiences have taught me that each student has the potential to grow and change. To that end I take on students of all dispositions, from the confident and capable to nervous and struggling type.

I am based in the North East of England and offer face-to-face tuition to anyone in this region. However, I offer online tuition to people from other regions (Skype, phone or email).

If you want extra help, email me and we can set up an ice-breaker session. Each lesson from then onwards is specifically tailored to your learning style. We can then focus on a combination of extra content and exam technique. I will continuously ask for feedback to make sure that you are satisfied with the quality of service.

Consider the benefits of having a tutor:
Raise your grades
Increase your self-confidence
Access to continuous support and advice

Why use me personally?
I am patient, creative, and dedicated in helping all students be successful. I have worked with diverse sets of students with wide range of needs. Therefore I am able to work with students of all abilities as I am flexible and adaptable to different settings.
My lessons are very comprehensive. You will typically be given a handout on the relevant topic, discussion and past paper questions and a background on the key critical thinkers. They are each adjusted to your learning style, so we can get quite creative!

I am DBS checked and can provide references upon request.

Teaching Experience:

My experience is threefold:
Classroom assistance: I did classroom work at Gateshead Volunteering and Opportunities Centre and New College Durham (2013). My duties involved: helping struggling students with classroom activities, helping them to express themselves and dealing with classroom behavioural issues. When working with students, I was noted for being approachable, compassionate, kind and patient.
Guest teaching: I gave regular guest lessons in Theology and Religious studies at Leeds Trinity University College, Jesmond Methodist Church, Gosforth High School and the Royal Grammar School (2011-14). My lessons were recognised as well-prepared, thought-provoking, and thorough.
Personal tutoring: since I started tutoring in the North East, I have taught students from Cramlington, Durham, Dunston, Gateshead, Gosforth, and Sunderland. I have also given online tuition to students at various regions of the UK (2013-). See testimonials for clients' views on me.

Tutoring Approach:

I offer two types of tuition:
Face-to-face: tuition is conducted at the student's home. It is always good practice to have an adult around the house. Face-to-face tuition is available to any student within reasonable travelling distance of Newcastle City Centre.
Online: tuition is conducted via phone, Skype and email (depending on the client preference). Online tuition is available to any student in the UK.

Each lesson is tailored to individual needs. The preliminary meeting will focus on your learning needs, and from this we will establish your goals for the tuition and the process for helping you to meet them. We will discuss how we can make the sessions play to your individual learning styles and strengths.

In lessons, we usually focus on two specific areas:
Extra teaching: we will usually have a discussion on a particular topic.
You will be given a detailed hand-out, some discussion questions, and (if necessary) a brief background on the important key thinkers.
Essay-writing: I will provide an essay-writing formula, which we will then
apply to past-paper questions, which will support you to write essays based on past exam papers. As part of the service, I will review the answer and provide detailed feedback to support further learning.

Testimonies from previous tutees:

"Michael has been an incredibly reliable tutor, the lessons were very well planned and clearly thought out. It was very helpful that he was willing to cater to individual learning styles and willing to respond to feedback. I think that he would be most helpful for those doing GCSEs and A Levels. Overall, a positive experience, he put in maximum effort to the tutoring sessions."

Hannah.

"You always prepared for each session sending materials prior to the tutoring. You are a very committed teacher, dedicated and caring. You impressed Anna with your knowledge and broadened and deepened her thoughts and ideas as well as her vocabulary. She would not have achieved her grade B if it was not for you. Thank you so much for all your help and support."

Ann

"Michael is a dedicated, supportive and patient tutor, and took the time to create tutoring sessions which were designed with jack's learning style in mind. Michael gave excellent advice and guidance in his subject in preparation for both the AS RE exam, but also essay writing techniques for A2 as he knew this was an area which Jack needed help in developing his skills. I would have no hesitation in recommending Michael's services to anyone. Thank you Michael for your help and support!"

Suzanne

"Rachel was home educated and had chosen Religious Studies as a GCSE in February and the exam was in June so she and Michael had their work cut out for them! Michael worked with Rachel helping her to direct her studies and fill in the gaps of her knowledge. He discussed concepts to give her a more well-rounded understanding of the subject and helped her structure her answers for a GCSE exam. He did all this in an engaging manner which resulted in Rachel developing a real interest and enjoyment of the subject and she achieved an A* in her exam! Michael is a very dedicated and supportive tutor and we would highly recommend him!"

Sharon

"Michael gives my son Joe tutoring, which Joe was rather dubious about to begin with, however it is working well. He is studying for A levels and has dyslexia, I wanted a tutor that could vary their teaching method to accommodate a dyslexic learner and he has done that. Michael clarifies at the start of each session what will be covered, ensures that is what my son requires and at the end that he has understood the session."

Relationship is the most important part of tutoring. As a native English speaker I am mentoring a person to feel comfortable functioning in my language. Sensitivity to the culture of the student is important for the sake of effective communication and enabling the student the comfortable zone to stretch their bounds. Once I understand the student's weaknesses and needs, I prepared lessons to further train the student.

Personal Description:
My name is Alexander and I am a Physics, Maths and Theory of Knowledge teacher, until recently working in London at The Godolphin and Latymer School, a prestigious independent school. I am currently pursuing a full-time PhD in Cosmology at Queen Mary, University of London.
My current research is into Dark Energy and Dark Matter and the effect these have on the formation of structure within the universe.

I am also a published author.

Teaching Experience:

I have over fourteen years of teaching experience, in GCSE, iGCSE, A-level, International Baccalaureate Standard and Higher level Physics and also International Baccalaureate Theory of Knowledge. Consequently I have a substantial array of teaching resources, practice questions and answers and experience of seeing the difficulties of students and helping them better access concepts and solve problems in these disciplines. Additionally, my research is highly mathematical in nature and I am currently tutoring in calculus and other related courses for the undergraduates at Queen Mary. As such I can also offer A-level and IB Maths tutoring if required.

Tutoring Approach:

I am based in Crystal Palace and will happily travel to students within a reasonable distance in central and greater London. Alternatively, it is possible to organise sessions in mutually convenient central London locations which I have access to, for example Queen Mary University library. I feel it is important to have full details of the syllabus a particular student is following prior to the first tutoring session so that the sessions can be tailored as specifcally as possible to the individual student and so time is not wasted in a given session.

Personal Description:
I have been involved in martial arts for over 14 years now and enjoy the process of teaching others how to better protect themselves. In my current main job, I teach and train members of staff and provide workforce development for over 1000 staff members on a variety of topics. My second job is as a Kickboxing and Self Defence Instructor at the University of Sunderland, where I have worked for over 7 years.

My peers and tutors have told me that my mannerisms and personality lend itself well to instructing and teaching. I am patient, understanding and explain subjects in an accessible way. I genuinely get enjoyment out of teaching, especially that moment where a student suddenly 'gets it' and then starts to take leaps and bounds in the training.

I sincerely look forward to hearing from you and training you or your class to better protect themselves.

Weekday's would have to be organised at least 2 weeks in advance so I can secure a leave day to accommodate this training.

Teaching Experience:

- 1st Dan Black belt for ASMAA Freestyle
- 1st Dan Black belt for Kickboxing
- Level 1 Coaching qualification in Kickboxing and Self Defence
- Phase 3 in Jeet Kune Do, Kali and Silat
- Over 14 years in martial arts, 6 years teaching
- Trained Gold, Silver and Bronze winning Kickboxers at a national and local level
- Part of ASMAA (All-Styles Martial Arts Association)

Tutoring Approach:

A personalised, considerate and professional approach. I would speak to you to find out what needs that you have, for example if you encounter situations at work or in your personal life, and then train you in a bespoke, specific way to deal with those issues. If there are no specific issues you are looking to cover, then a general overview would be covered that is useful for all walks of life.

Every step of the way I will explain concepts, reinforce them with real-life examples and ensure that, in your mind, you have confidence in the techniques I will be teaching. You will then have the opportunity to train these techniques at your own pace, with detailed feedback and giving you opportunities to improve and praising good form.

All techniques can be 'pressure tested' to ensure that they will work under stress or imminent attack.

For those students that are younger, I have delivered sessions that gently guide students into the world of martial arts and about respect for one another. Fitness, games and good solid technique would be the backbone of any sessions delivered.
