I am a full time, professional tutor, specialising in English, maths and general study skills. I achieve excellent results and students look forward to my sessions. As detailed below, I have a wealth of experience and success working with students with Special Educational Needs, and other difficulties which have prevented them from accessing the curriculum fully.

I have a very calm, patient and friendly approach to tuition. I will explain and revisit as many times as needed and use a variety of methods to make tricky topics memorable. I use a range of resources and approaches, tailored to student preferences and different learning styles.


I am qualified teacher with a BEd teaching degree and a Masters degree in education, plus other courses attended to further my professional development.

MEd: I have a Masters Degree in Education, completed in 2013.

Tutoring Approach:

I support students with many different needs and situations. These include:

Over the past 4 years in my role as a tutor, my students have made excellent progress in terms of confidence, catching up with age-related expectations and achieving the desired level or above in 11+ or Year Six SATs. I have a loyal student base and much of my work now comes from existing student recommendations.


Recent successes:

Children who have not responded to tuition in the past have really engaged with the subject and made good progress.

Children who were struggling with Year 6 SATs have achieved at least one level higher than predicted.

Those tutored for 11+ exams have passed and gained entry to their chosen school (Two to Wolverhampton Grammar, one to King Edward`s Birmingham).

Personal Description:
I left Hampton School in 2009 with 9 A*s and A's at GCSE and 4 A's at A-Level (this was before the A* grade was introduced). While a pupil there I combined my studies with the Philosophy Circle, made a short film raising awareness of human rights abuses in Burma, and took medals at numerous rowing events, including National Schools Head and National Schools Regatta

I left St Hugh's College, Oxford, in 2016 after seven years reading Classics. I focused on literature - Homer, Virgil, Aeschylus, Sophocles, Euripides and Juvenal among the more prominent names - but took in history, philosophy, art and archaeology as well.

While the Latin and Greek languages, inculcated by my grandmother's reading me myths in the nursery, remain my first love, I am as passionate about English. I've always thrilled at a meet, original turn of phrase; I've read for pleasure as far back as I can remember; and I learn a new poem by heart each Sunday. It is this enjoyment and relish of learning that informs my teaching and which I aim to pass on to my pupils.

Teaching Experience:

I have been teaching since before I can recall. My family could tell you that I'm never happier than when imparting some new fact to them. Formally, I began in the Sixth Form, assisting my teachers with their 11-13 year-old classes. There I learned quick, efficient and discreet one-to-one tuition.

Since September 2012 I have been tutoring GCSE students in Latin, Greek, English Literature and English as a foreign language. My tutees have included pupils who had fallen behind, pupils who transferred late into unfamiliar subjects, and (in my proudest example) a new arrival from Shanghai who could only slightly speak English. He passed his Englsh GCSEs nine months later.

Tutoring Approach:

I aim to teach you the Oxford way: begin with a read aloud of a text, or ask for a brief summary of the topic studied for homework, and then discussion. My aim is to impart not only factual knowledge (the what) as understanding (the why). But if your son or daughter understands the blunt fact of Shakespeare's iambic pentameter or Virgil's dactylic hexameter, then specific examples of its effective use will come to them and *remain with them* all the easier. I'm particularly good at teaching the 'prescriptive' stuff, like metre and grammar, rigorously without being boring. Many years a student myself, I value patience, kindness and humour in my teachers, and I set these at the core of my teaching.

I did my undergraduate degree at St Andrews University and postgrad at Durham University; I've just returned from a year on research in the US. I love teaching and work for the Open University, which involves finding innovative ways to teach a large range of topics to students from 18 to 70 years old, which always makes for an interesting experience. I'm living in Newcastle and love the North East in general.

Teaching Experience:

Teaching at degree level since 2002, I have over 250 hours of face-to-face teaching experience.

I also have a Durham Teaching and Learning Award, a peer- and student- nominated annual prize given to 3-5 teachers in the university to recognise outstanding achievement.

I've taught in both the Philosophy and Theology & Religion departments of Durham University, as well as teaching Introductions to Arts & Humanities for the Open University. I frequently teach study skills and help address specific students' concerns about how to improve.

My experience also includes work in the Access/Widening Participation arena, and I have taught a variety of topics for the 14-18 age range, including work on the Sutton Trust Summer School programme.

Tutoring Approach:

My approach is best summed up as "everyone is different". Finding out what someone enjoys, what they're good at, and how they think, is the first step in helping them get the most they can out of any topic or situation. The ways that people learn, and the things that fire their imaginations, are diverse - but the expectations of coursework and exams don't always recognise that. I see my job as not simply preparing people to pass a test or master a skill, but as helping them to discover what works best for them as a student, and giving them the confidence to approach new challenges successfully.

Tutoring Approach:

As a tutor, I consider the student's progress even after a few lessons to be the most important aim and reason for my work.

The pleasure I take in teaching foreign languages comes especially from my wish to instill into my students a love for the beauty and mystery of a new linguistic field and new semantic world. One of my biggest contentments is to share my knowledge and interest with them and then acknowledge their progress in this domain. My purpose is not only to work with passion but also to enable my students to enlarge their horizons so they are able to quickly compare, assimilate and develop their swiftness when communicating in a foreign language.

In other words, I target with priority:

-the valorization of the student's potential,
-the diversity of the amount of information that each student assimilates
-the enthusiasm and the interactive atmosphere during the lessons

I find that the level at which each student begins with is not important as long as there is a visible progress between the start and the finish of the tuition.

The basis of my lessons consists of the notions which everyone needs in order to know a foreign language, aspects related to the cultural and the real life and the attention on the typical rules of the foreign language.

With delight and interest I concentrate on the efficient use of a variety of media (songs, short films, films, books, newspaper articles, literature) which could animate the lessons.

My eagerness and determination to learn and teach foreign languages (French, English and Italian) developed my interest in analyzing, comparing and synthesizing information as well as enabling me to discover various methods of teaching a considerable amount of knowledge. Through assiduity and responsibility I managed to find the path towards mastering these foreign languages and teaching them with enthusiasm.

Foreign languages are a source of mystery, a mix of rules and originality, a mine of meanings and linguistic surprises, a challenge. I've always found them a very absorbing and fulfilling but sometimes frustratingly vast field which attracts and challenges to a thorough study and wider analysis.

I learned that paying close attention to quality of all my work and grasping opportunities to learn new skills must be prioritized by professional workers.

Teaching Experience:

I have tutored one to one biology for GCSE and A Level students for 7 years and have spent 9 years tutoring children of primary school age and secondary school students aged 11-14. I have worked part time at a tuition centre for two years teaching both groups and one to one lessons for ages ranging from 6 to 18, in the fields of Science, Maths and English. Additionally, I have run large revision sessions during the run up to exams, covering essential aspects of the syllabus.

Tutoring Approach:

My tutoring style varies greatly between age groups. With younger children, I prefer the use of examples, starting with easier questions and building up to more difficult questions. I feel that this method is an effective means of interacting with the student and understanding his/ her ability. With older students, I always prefer to let the student dictate how he/she would like to learn and adapt my teaching style to their learning.

I am a voracious reader, and was therefore tempted to choose English as my main subject in university, but eventually decided on French. I studied at Stanford University for four years, including one year through its study abroad programme in Paris. I have also worked many years as a professional musician, touring in the UK, Europe, USA and Mexico.

Teaching Experience:

Now a qualified teacher, having trained at the PGCE programme in Aberystwyth, I have taught in many schools around the Aberystwyth area.

I taught English to high school students for one year in France.
In a night school in Utah (USA) I taught English as a second language to adults.
I have taught music (guitar, ukulele and piano) for nearly 10 years.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe in student-centred teaching, so rather than impose strict rules I approach each student as an individual in order to find the best approach for gaining skills and confidence in the subject. Structure is also important, however, and it's important to use exercises and repetition to really come to terms with a subject. Games and songs have their place, too; let's have fun while we're learning!

Hi, my name is Pragya and I have done my A levels in Mathematics and Further Mathematics. I will be studying a Bachelors course in Computer Science at King's College London this year. I have a keen interest in Mathematics and enjoy teaching it as much as learning about it. I have achieved Silver in the Mathematics Challenge run by the United Kingdom Mathematics Trust, and scored two A grades in both Maths and Further Maths at A Levels.

Teaching Experience:

I enjoy teaching mathematics and have had the privilege of being a Maths Mentor at Salterhebble Junior and Infant school. I have taught GCSE level and have helped fellow peers struggling with A level mathematics, which can be extremely complex.
