Personal Description:
I have a dual background in Electrical Engineering and Psychology and retired in 2007 after 20 years as a University lecturer. At different stages in my career I have taught telecommunications engineering, computer programming, software engineering, artificial intelligence and psychology. For relaxation I listen to jazz and blues.

Teaching Experience:

I have been tutoring students since March 2008 and am able to offer maths, physics and ICT from primary up to 'A' level, and general science (biology, chemistry, and physics) up to GCSE level. I have taught GCE A-level Maths, Further Maths and Physics with a number of students who have obtained places at Oxbridge/ Russell Group Universities to study Engineering, Maths, Medicine and Economics. A number of my tutees have been following courses in IGCSE Maths or Science or the IB in Maths or Physics. I have also taught students with Statements of Special Educational Need who have succeeded in obtaining qualifications in Functional Skills in Maths, English and Science. I am familiar with the 11+ exam requirements of Bromley, Bexley, and Kent education authorities and have assisted a number of pupils with their preparation for the exam. (In the absence of this category in the Subject list, my fee for 11+ preparation is 24/hour and for 13+ (Common Entrance) 26/hour.). At postgraduate level I can advise on research methods and statistics.

I am a chartered psychologist and can carry out educational and psychological assessments of both children and adults who are experiencing learning or language difficulties (however, I do not undertake remedial teaching).

Tutoring Approach:

I consider it important to assess the student's needs, strengths, and weaknesses carefully at the outset in order to develop a set of goals based on this assessment. I aim to provide well-structured and clearly presented instruction, which if the pupil is able and well-motivated will generally lead to progress. If the pupil is poorly motivated and/or has acquired unhelpful learning habits then we may need to vary the approach in order to re-engage their interest and/or find a level at which they can perform successfully, and then build on this accomplishment.

If required, I can provide references from past and present clients. I also offer a free first lesson so that the student has the opportunity to experience my style/approach before committing themselves to further lessons.

NOTE: During the summer holiday, I am not available for in-person lessons, but can offer lessons via Skype on either weekdays or weekends.

Personal Description:
At undergraduate level I studied Classics at Oxford University, which involved rigorous language learning and a close engagement with set texts. I was awarded an academic scholarship for my examination results. Then I completed a Master's Degree in Latin literature at UCL, focusing particularly on the influence of Latin literature on contemporary theatre. I was awarded The Dean's List prize for academic excellence. It is Latin poetry that particularly holds my attention because, even after two thousand years, there is still so much new to be said about it.

Teaching Experience:

Private tutor for six years, with significant experience in private tuition of Latin, Greek and English at all levels.

Taught Latin at a prep school. This required lesson planning, homework marking and well-tailored teaching because of the small class sizes. Although we referred to the 'Minimus' textbook frequently as a well-planned learning scheme there was no strict curriculum, which meant that we could use the lessons to explore some of the more enjoyable aspects of studying Classics.

Teaching assistant for primary school Latin classes. The class size was small, which allowed me to get to know the students individually and help each of them according to their level.

Excellent, up-to-date knowledge of the current syllabuses for Common Entrance, GCSE and A-level and have worked extensively from the Oxford and Cambridge Latin Courses, from Athenaze, Greek to GCSE, the ISEB Common Entrance publications and from other frequently used textbooks.

Tutoring Approach:

The most important thing is to find out the areas with which the student will need the most help. In the first session, I'll discuss with the student which areas we should focus on, then I will plan my lessons carefully to address those areas of difficulty.

I like to build routine into tuition sessions, particularly when learning vocabulary, so that the student knows what to expect in each session.

Teaching Experience:

I have more than 15 years of teaching experience (Lecturing). The theories what I have studied and have been teaching is universal. Tutoring Approach:

I follow the syllabus provided by the exam board, to teach each topic. Then I go through past papers, explain how to answer the questions. I expect students to do the papers at home and give to me for marking. I go through their answers and explain how to answer the questions. My teaching approach is, first I assess the student's current knowledge regarding the subject and thereafter I pitch accordingly. I use simple language and current examples in explaining the theories and concepts. Also I give and discuss past papers with the student and guide them in the correct method in answering a question. I give home work from selected past papers. I prepare a simplified handout for every lesson and this handout is the final reading material for the examination. Sometimes I dictate short notes during the lesson and my teaching sessions are interactive, where the students are encouraged to ask questions and express their current knowledge about the subject. At present there are number of satisfied students. I am unable to disclose their identities with out prior permission from them. My first lesson is free of charge. So that the student will have a chance to judge my approaches to teaching, subject knowledge, my mannerism etc.

I began having Japanese lessons at school when I was eleven years old and continued to study the language for a further seven years. I completed GCSE Japanese- A* and GCE A Level Japanese-B before coming to the University of Leeds to study BA Japanese and Philosophy.
I have been lucky enough to have visited Osaka as an exchange student during my A-Level studies and also to have co-hosted an exchange student. These experiences were key in making me want to pursue learning Japanese as well as teach others about the language and culture.

Teaching Experience:

I have taught beginner Japanese lessons in primary schools and at my previous school supported secondary students with their Japanese studies. During my time in Japan I was able to assist Japanese friends at school with their learning of English as well as teach my host family key English phrases.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe that learning a new language should be interactive and enjoyable. I encourage students to get stuck in and be prepared to learn from mistakes in order to develop a thorough understanding and sound knowledge of Japanese. The benefit of studying Japanese creatively and through the use of games, flashcards and evaluative quizzes is a relaxed approach to study and in my experience, steady achievement.

He is dedicated to his work, has always arrived when expected and is thoroughly prepared both for the individual lesson but also with a scheme of work for the months ahead to ensure that the syllabus is covered.
His communication is excellent and he keeps in regular contact providing information each week on the lesson ahead but also feedback after each lesson.
My son found Jon interesting, knowledgeable and able to explain even the most difficult concepts he even requested an extra lesson prior to the exam as he found the sessions so helpful.
I can recommend him without hesitation.

I have to say that both myself and Matthew have been incredibly impressed by you and your enthusiasm, preparation and encouragement. The fact that Matthew arranged the extra lesson this week is testament to this!
I know he can be a bit uncommunicative at times but he has told me how helpful the sessions have been.
I don't know if he told you but he has decided to have a gap year and personally I think he probably needs it to really work out what he wants to do. I think this has taken the pressure off him and I can honestly say he has been happier and worked harder since he made this decision.
If anything it has made him more focused about getting the best grades he can.

2017-2018 academic year: My program will provide the basis of all student with ability in "the Sciences and Mathematics" subjects (A's at GCSE level) to provide the opportunity to obtain the top grade in AS/A2 physics

The 'timetable' and order by which each part of the syllabus will be approached will follow the AQA examination board's timetable. For students joining after the commencement of the academic year, those parts of the syllabus already covered will be 'returned to' during the 'revision period' after Easter

My tutoring sessions are always: 2 hours. They can be taken either:

1. Once per week: full coverage of the syllabus (AS/A2: including Options) plus significant time, each week, devoted to answering questions based on past papers

2. Once per two weeks: full coverage of the syllabus (AS/A2: including Options) plus time, each week, devoted to answering questions based on past papers

In addition to having the 'physics abilities', students will need to understand how to approach examinations and examination questions. There are different variations, each year, but with detailed subject knowledge and significant practice on exam style and past paper questions there should be no type of exam question that should cause any concerns to any student

To ensure a top grade (A/A*) the student will need to commit to additional study, over and above these two hour sessions:

Subject notes will be provided each week, in advance of the lesson, covering the topic to be covered during the lesson - the student will be expected to have already gained an "overview" of the subject area prior to the lesson commencing and take additional notes during the lesson

Each week, following the lesson, each student should complete sufficient exam style and past paper questions to ensure that they have obtained a comprehensive understanding of the subject area and detailed knowledge of 'typical' exam questions

Additional background reading will also be provided that will reach beyond the syllabus giving a deeper understanding of the "concepts" and "background" of the area of physics being studied - this will ensure clarity on the "physics concepts" that are examined in the final year papers each year

Following each lesson (excluding revision and examination question and answering sessions) the diagrams and other material used during each lesson will be provided, so that the student can compare the information with the notes provided and taken during each lesson - building up a complete 'library' of detailed knowledge on each subject area in the syllabus

It is expected that the student will spend (at least) two hours each week, in addition, to the two hour lesson and all school/college work

NOTE: The work program detailed above should not be at the exclusion of the students 'other subjects' - however much time is allocated to physics each week should be replicated with the student's other subjects

Essential planning:

To be prepared for the end year (A2/AS) examinations it will be important to start preparing early

By Christmas time (2017) each student should have produced an 'outline' revision timetable, covering all subjects - without going into detail here, the plan should include all 'known activities' (school/college/personal holidays, mock exam dates, field trips etc.) and periods allocated to revision of each of your subjects, so that a balanced and comprehensive plan for all subjects will attained

Note - 'downtime' should also be included - students should have a practical and balanced approach to secure the best results possible. Peaking too early or 'brain overload' are recipes for underperformance in examinations

I will assist, as required, throughout the period up to when the end year exams commence - this revision timetable will change over the period until the exams start, with the final months becoming more detailed - it will assist in allocating your 'known' resources

Tutoring style:

My lessons are highly interactive

In addition to the printed notes, the student will be expected to add additional notes of their own during each session

My students are fully engaged in all of the lessons and are expected to interact within the lesson

Worked examples and opportunities for students to complete typical exam questions will be part of every lesson

The lessons are delivered from my widescreen laptop making use of theory, pictures/diagrams, interactive GIFs, short videos to help introduce topics and emphasis on specific core material

On approaching (mock and final year) examinations periods:

1. I provide one session on "examination technique" (following AQA best practice) and adopt a rigorous question answering method to ensure that:

(a) Maximise the marks obtained for all mathematical and comprehensive style questions and

(b) In the event that any of my students fall into a "grade boundary" this question answering methodology will ensure the examiner will recognise the 'knowledge of physics' of my students and should ensure an upward grade where required and

2. Take the students through past examination papers to ensure that each 'style' of AQA question solving is well practiced

Flexibility will always be part of the process - if there are specific areas or concepts the student wishes to spend more time on, this time will be allocated
