Personal Description:
I have taught in many capacities as a tutor, classroom teacher, special needs tutor, teacher's assistant and was deputy head of English at an Outstanding South London secondary school. I enjoy working with young people and helping them to achieve. I value enjoyment as top of the list. If you enjoy lessons you enjoy learning but I also value making what you learn of a high quality. I think you must have pride and hard work to get the most out of whatever you learn and with those ingredients I believe anyone can do anything.

Teaching Experience:

3 years as a teaching assistant and special needs worker at a variety of schools. Achieved outstanding results with ADHD, aspergers, dyslexic and autistic pupils.
Personal tutoring for young people in maths, music, English and French.
Trained as a TEFL teacher and 5 years experience working at home and abroad teaching children and adults.
Deputy Head of English at a South London secondary school where I achieved fantastic GCSE results and taught from year 7-13. I wrote and delivered schemes of work on grammar, English Literature (Dickens, Shakespeare etc) and English Language.
I currently deliver drama and English in many settings such as prisons, with refugees, in schools and with theatres.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe in building a rapport of achievement and enjoyment with the tutee. Patience and a sense of humour is vital. I would prepare in detail and allow the lesson to be focused and achievable. I have taken on over 12 tutees from this website aged 6-16 and have enjoyed each one. I can provide appropriate references. I set high goals and believe in adapting to the learning styles of the tutees.

Personal Description:
I'm a ex-mathematical physicist from Cambridge turned film director, and also freelance as a data-scientist. I have two funded feature films in development and have made music videos and adverts. I started tutoring when I switched careers because the film industry is unstable, especially as a freelancer. I keep up the tutoring now because I enjoy it and look for assignments I think are interesting and where I can really make a difference.

I am passionate about the subjects I tutor in and education in general. Education forms the foundation for freeing us from bigotry and ignorance, makes us better people and permits us to live richer, better lives. Knowledge is liberating and my subjects especially open many doors. They are not easy and require a willingness to work hard, but I strongly believe that anyone can get to grips with them if given the correct guidance. Most often the problem is not the student but a poor teacher, unresolved conceptual difficulties or lack of motivation. I want to fix these issues for you.

I'd say my approach to education is rigorous, highly intellectual and what one might term renaissance in approach. I'm interested in all aspects of education, and how our disparate academic disciplines connect which is somewhat antithetical to the modern approach to education but just the sort of thing one needs to get into Oxbridge and the like.

Why is tutoring important to me? Firstly, I feel it is my responsibility to pass on the knowledge and skills I have attained; secondly, I find it satisfying to help others learn and achieve what they did not think possible, regardless of their ability; and finally, I think one of the best ways to assess your own understanding of a subject is to teach it; we learn the most about our areas of expertise when we try convey their concepts and methods to an audience.

Teaching Experience:

I have tutored many (over 100) students privately over the past six years, improving their results in all cases where the students have followed my advice and worked hard. I'm only interested in teaching people who are prepared to do this work and better themselves, especially if its for something like the 11+/common entrance.

Beside the subjects listed in my profile, I will also teach 11+/common entrance, coding/game design, statistics and probability, film-making, creative writing, government and politics, economics.

Tutoring Approach:

I am patient and I persevere. I am happy to tutor people across all ranges of ability but I expect you to work hard and follow my advice.

My tutoring includes:

- encouragement of free and critical thinking
- varying teaching methods depending on what the student is most receptive to including: problem based learning, discourse, traditional exercises, experiments, lectures
- exam preparation
- confidence building
- resolution of conceptual difficulties
- helping with homework
- homework marking
- undergraduate and postgraduate application advice
- coaching for Oxbridge entrance including the STEP papers
- interview advice at undergraduate and postgraduate levels
- email contact throughout the week to resolve your problems as an when they arise
- group tuition

Please note (a) while I am based in Hackney, I will cover all areas of London; (b) I can offer reductions for group sessions.

Personal Description:
I am an experienced chemistry teacher and A-level examiner. I have been a private tutor in chemistry and maths since 2002 with excellent results and consistently good feedback. All students are welcome, whether working towards first-time examinations, resits, or needing support and confidence through the course. As well as teaching and supporting all areas of A-level and GCSE chemstry, I spend time with students on study skills, revision technique and exam technique. These are areas which are sometimes given little attention in schools but are central to student's success and the development of their potential.

Teaching Experience:

Both my private tuition and work as a teacher have benefitted from my work as an external examiner for AS chemistry, on-going since 2004. This gives me an invaluable insight not only in terms of subject knowledge but also towards exam preparation and technique. I can therefore assist with a variety of extremely useful tips and pointers towards revision and taking exams, including, for example, key word-pairs guaranteed to improve answers.

I am frequently commended for explaining concepts very clearly with relevant examples.

Private tutor (chemistry, maths) - 12 years
Chemistry and maths lecturer - 10 years
External A-level chemistry examiner - 12 years

Tutoring Approach:

I am friendly and approachable, encouraging queries and questions whenever they arise. I adjust my pace to suit each individual learner and design a tuition plan according to each individual's personal strengths and weaknesses. I use questioning techniques as part of my teaching in order to help students express themselves and develop both their thinking and understanding of chemistry. I also help with both revision and exam technique and this is incorporated into my teaching as well as discussed separately.

I am happy to tutor both individuals and groups of 2-4. I recommend 1hr teaching sessions for GCSE and 1 - 1.5 hours for A-level. I provide past papers and other materials as necessary and can do longer or more frequent lessons around exam time, if required.

Personal Description:
I am an enthusiastic and experienced teacher with a real passion for languages. This has led me to travel widely within Europe and amass a great deal of experience of other cultures. That and my belief in 'having a go' at communicating has led me to learn the basics of quite a few languages and given me plenty of material for (short) 'instructional anecdotes', based on various scrapes and international misunderstandings! Languages should be fun and we should never be afraid to try them out! My other passion is music - a truly international language - and I enjoy my weekly instrumental lessons and playing with my local (amateur) orchestra.

Teaching Experience:

I hold degree level qualifications in English, French, Spanish and German and have over 30 years' experience of teaching languages, in both private and state schools and Sixth Form and Further Education colleges, where I have prepared students for a range of examinations and other qualifications. I have particular expertise in helping students bridge the gap between GCSE and AS level - and I love grammar! I have also worked as a private tutor and as a provider of courses and interpreting services for local businesses. My students have ranged in age from 8 to 80-plus. I teach Spanish and French to A level and can also offer German and Italian to intermediate level and basic introductory courses in Russian and Latin. I also offer conversational English for speakers of other languages.

Tutoring Approach:

Lessons usually take place in my home, but I am also willing to travel to you or to a venue of your choice. In the latter case I would need reasonable time and travel expenses. I can offer day-time or evening lessons, any day of the week. My hourly rate is 25, though I offer lessons of any length to suit you (charged pro rata). The same rate applies irrespective of the group size. Tutoring can be 1-to-1, small-group or, if you can provide a suitable venue, in a group of up to 15. I can offer intensive tuition or courses of various lengths (though exam candidates must make their own arrangements to sit papers). Alternatively, I can offer coaching and support for those already studying elsewhere. Each course is tailor-made to suit your exact requirements - and I aim to make each lesson fun!

Personal Description:
My name is Ian and I would be a female tutor. I was born in Malaysia and I have travelled to New Zealand and Australia for academic and research purposes. I have recently passed my PhD Viva and currently preparing for a major move to Orkney Islands. Even though English is not my first language, I have a great understanding in the subject of Organic Chemistry, I have ample tips for studying chemistry along side with basic knowledge in Math.

Teaching Experience:

I was a Campus Coach during my academic years in New Zealand. I would help 1st and 2nd year university students from our science department with their studies. This include giving them motivation to learn, tips for note-taking, managing time meeting all kind of assignments, giving advice on who they should approach for more academic and social help.

Recently, I was a lab demonstrator and Chemistry tutor during my academic year at University of Glasgow. I assisted students in the safe execution of the experiment, safe and proper operation and handling of lab equipment, chemicals and glassware. I was actively engaged with the students in discussions about the experiment. I also collected and grade pre-lab assignments in a timely manner, enter grades in record book, and circulate to give individual feedback to students. In addition, I was responsible for reporting any problems/incidents/inconsistencies immediately to the instructor and replenish/prepare any chemicals or supplies if asked upon with help from the technicians. I had the first-hand experience as a marker of assignments and lab reports, so I will know what to expect from a good to excellent answers to given questions.

Tutoring Approach:

My approach varies depending on the student's needs and learning style. However my teaching philosophy is based on encouraging students to think for themselves, using real-world examples wherever possible. I start from topics the students are comfortable with and move gradually towards more complex areas as their confidence builds. I use questions and examples to check understanding continually.

I usually focus on exam-style or past paper questions in order to check, practice and perfect the student's understanding and technique.

Feel free to drop me a line if you need help with your homework. If there is any single topic of Chemistry you need some clarification and understanding, don't delay!

Personal Description:
I am an enthusiastic and hard working medical student currently in my fourth year at Cardiff University.

I flew through secondary school receiving the best GCSE results in my school and district 10 A*s including triple science, English, maths, business studies, and history.

Furthermore I qualified through sixth form with straight As in Chemistry, biology, and maths.

Teaching Experience:

I have a lot of experience teaching my younger sister and mentoring her through her GCSEs, A levels and even her acceptance into Dentistry school.

I used to teach at an after school science club that aimed to make learning fun through experiments and creative involvement.

Furthermore, I have taught students from my Church and led classes in schools and community centres for varying ages and abilities.

Tutoring Approach:

I enjoy tutoring students in a calm and relaxed environment where the pace is set according to the individual. In the past I have dedicated a lot of time in finding the right method to revise and study for my exams. I am able to apply this experience to my own students and apply this early to set them on the route to success.

By using a strategic approach, with lots of exam technique and practice you can look forward to seeing effective outcomes.

Personal Description:
Hello there, my name is Lindsey and I am a 4th year medical student at King's College London. I am an extremely active member of the medical community at KCL, and love being a medic. In the future I hope to work either for Medecins Sans Frontieres or possibly as a Psychiatrist or Paediatrician, as these are the specialties that have sparked the most interest in me!

I am really passionate about tutoring and mentoring, and would love to share my experience with those who need help.

The subjects that I am most interested in teaching are as follows:
- Chemistry Primary/ GCSE/ A-Level
- Biology Primary/ GCSE/ A-Level
- UKCAT tutoring
- Medical Interview tutoring
- Application to Medicine tutoring (Personal statement, etc)
- English Literature Primary/ GCSE/ A-Level
- I also play Piano (Grade 8), so can teach lower levels.

In particular, my tutoring for application to Medical School tutoring is very strong. I have helped many hopeful medics in applying successfully to University, by working on modifying Personal Statements to particular universities and strengthening interviewing techniques.

Teaching Experience:

I have done plenty of mentoring/ tutoring in the past; this has included the SHINE initiative in disadvantaged schools, Peer Assisted Learning at KCL for my fellow students and tutoring for both A-Level and GCSE. I have volunteered as a Girl Guide Young Leader, as well as teaching English in schools in Tamil Nadu, India and Cape Town, South Africa for 3 consecutive summers. As well as this, I am a Level 2 Sports Coach, and have worked teaching Year 2-5 in Badminton, Athletics, etc. I really enjoy helping students one-on-one, or in small groups if preferred.

I have taught both girls and boys, ranging from age 5-16. I feel my friendly attitude and encouraging words allows me to form a strong bond with each of my students, as I focus on their both accentuating individual skills whilst also gently working on improvements.

Tutoring Approach:

My style of teaching is relaxed and encouraging, yet still with structure and learning objectives. I always give my students something to work on for the next session (i.e. research something, do a small quiz, present a chosen topic) as I feel it motivates and promotes a healthy work attitude.

I work on the basis of a) what my pupil wants to learn b) what I think would help them get the most out of revision for examinations, university interviews, etc. I start by setting out a few goals for us to tackle, and then see how it goes from there.

I am very high for my students (although not putting them under too much pressure) and encourage them to work the hardest they can to achieve their maximum potential!
