At the academic skills pre-sessional courses at the University of Birmingham in 2012-2016 I gained even deeper experience supporting individual students with writing within very constrained time-limits. I guided all to success at their final assessments. I have had very positive feedback and comments of appreciation.

I have taught in various set-ups - whole class, pair work, group work, or one-to-one sessions. I am deeply interested in each student's individual learning needs and progress and one of my major strengths is differentiation. I sometimes prepare material at 4 levels of differentiation for a single class or small group. I use supportive strategies to boost students' confidence, at the same time challenging learners to achieve beyond their own expectations. I approach intense 1-to-1 sessions with the appropriate dynamics.

I am prepared to go beyond my 'job description' duties to help students with 'special needs'. I am interested in their individual circumstances and take them into account, where appropriate. I prepare resources to address their personal needs and interests. I review their progress and involve them in self-assessment towards autonomy of learning. I am familiar with the 'Assessment for Learning' policy and competent with implementing it widely.

I have worked successfully with students with dyslexia. At secondary school, one of my 'high-ability' dyslexic students scored an 'A' grade at her English GCSE, while another participated in a poetry competition. I have had success teaching students with autism and Asperger's as well.

I invest all of myself in my teaching. I am a highly trusted professional and have an exceptional rapport with my students. I am often quoted as a preferred tutor, who 'has the best way of explaining things' and 'is very patient, friendly and cheerful'. All students of mine - regardless whether at school, college or university - progressed by at least one level (even at short-term courses). A student with a debilitating illness on the BME, predicted to fail the course, not only passed it under my guidance, but achieved grades higher than his required level. In my 15-year teaching career I have never failed a student. I have achieved outstanding results at OFSTED observations. My latest annual lesson observation at BMETC was graded 'OUTSTANDING' and so was my performance at NAVITAS earlier this year. Another observation at BCU was unofficially deemed as 'the best on the course'. I have been invited to share exceptional ideas at training events and have also participated in numerous training activities at schools, colleges and universities. I often opt to peer-observe colleagues, to learn from their teaching styles.

Some more examples from my practice: a class of illiterate Yemeni housewives at BMETC, 2011, achieved a 100% pass at their ESOL exams, while 'advanced' international students at the BME, 2012 achieved some of the highest grades on the course. I have been successful dealing with pupils with behavioural problems at Harborne Hill School. Many reported an increasingly positive attitude to learning. I am a creative teacher and try to interest and enthuse students, so that they enjoy learning and celebrate their achievements.

Tutoring Approach:

First I negotiate the times and modes of tutoring with the parents of my potential pupil and agree on fees.
Then I organise a free initial meeting with the pupil and their parents, where I try to establish raport with the pupil. It is important, especially for children, to 'get a feel' of the new tutor and see if they can feel comfortable with her.
Then I try to access as much information as possible from the parents and the child about their progress at school and their attitude to school. If possible, I wish to see samples of the child's school work, or hear anything teachers have said/written about their progress.
During the first lesson I conduct an informal assessment of the pupil's skills - give them a piece of text to read, or free writing or short composition, or a selection of Maths problems to solve. When I get a clear picture of where my pupil stands with a certain skill, I create a short-term plan of work with them. I normally bring materials with me and do not ask parents to buy additional materials. If the parent wishes me to follow a certain self- help book, I am happy to oblige.
I update parents regularly of their child's progress - I try to do it after every lesson. I normally leave homework, designed to consolidate the material covered in the lesson, or develop their skills further. I wish parents to be involved as much as possible with helping or monitoring the completion of the homework.
I try to show my pupils as much respect as possible and affirm them as individuals. I acknowledge their birthdays, Christmas, or other family celebrations.
The parents can terminate the service at any time, with only one week notice.

Since I left University in 1999 I have been teaching all levels of Spanish courses. I have worked for Redbridge and Barking&Dagenham colleges of Adult Education , teaching GCSE,AS/A2 and Advanced Conversation Courses. I have an excellent record of one-to-one tutoring with a very successful exam results. I also have the opportunity to work as an examiner for one of the boards which has given me more insight into the expectations for Spanish GCSE exams.

Spanish is an amazing language! I believe learners need to understand the grammar well as this aspect is essencial to get good grades in their final exams. Teaching Experience:

I have 6 years of English teaching experience, having taught small groups and also on a 1:1 basis. I taught English at the Refugee Council for 18 months, teaching people from many different countries and cultures. I achieve a good balance between bringing out the fun and interesting side of the curriculum while also keeping focused on the precise requirements for achieving high grades in exams.

I am very good at explaining exactly how to write an essay which picks up as many marks as possible. A level essay writing is a skill in itself which can be broken down into succinct elements.

Too often, teachers merely teach the content of the curriculum without showing students exactly how to work that content into a successful essay. I find the best way to inspire confidence is to first teach something and then explain exactly how a student might then write about it in an essay. By the time I finish teaching a topic, my students have a clear idea of how to write an essay on it.

I have a keen interest in the political and cultural issues that surrounded religion & philosophy in the world today. I find that drawing out the connections between academic ideas and the real world is invaluable for inspiring engagement and interest.

Hi my name is Jake

I am an experienced photographer/videographer with many years of practice, I have a degree from Nottingham Trent University along with a video production company called Capture the Guru. Over the years I have worked in many different areas of both disciplines, finding myself specialising in architectural photography and music based videography.

I have in-depth knowledge in both practical skills and in the psychology of interpreting images and video, this allows me to not only teach you how to take and record quality material, along with how to work with it in post-production but to also consider how your work will be received.

However most importantly I want to take the interest that you have currently and give you the skills to truly produce material to be proud of, along with further instilling the enjoyment that is so important.

Teaching Experience:

I have not had much formal teaching experience as of yet, however I have taught a fair few people tricks in order for them to produce better snaps. Whilst I was studying me and a group of friends on the course banded together to help teach each other the parts we struggled with, I was always very apt with the technical side of photography and would teach the others how to used different forms of cameras and how to emulate specific styles that we were learning about.

Now however since working within video my colleague and me are constantly teaching each other new tricks whilst filming and editing.

Tutoring Approach:

My approach to teaching is simple, to discover the level of enjoyment and enhance it. We can all become frustrated when the need to produce our ideas is limited by our current knowledge and when it comes to mediums like photography and videography a practical hands-on lesson far surpasses any online tutorial.

I completed a CELTA course in 2013 at York St John's University in order to train in teaching English as a foreign language; this was an amazing experience that truly prepared me for lesson planning and assisting students in their learning and development.

After the course, I set up a non-profit language class in York city centre to assist speakers of other languages in their development of English. This was targeted at working adults on a low income. The course ran for several months and was a hugely beneficial experience for both the students and teachers involved! Since then I have taught English as a foreign language both online and as a private tutor.

I have also tutored students towards GCSE English Language and Literature.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe every student is different so I aim to fit the lessons around your individual goals and personality. I value preparation before each lesson (especially on my part!) because the whole experience can be so much more rewarding that way.

Varying learning techniques is important in each study session to really make the most of the lesson time and make it as enjoyable and memorable as possible.

I tend to design each student their own webpage so that they have their own personal online space; to find resources, homework, lesson information and leave comments of their own.
