Personal Description:
I am a French national who has been living in the UK for 4 years and tutoring for much of that time. I graduated in Business Communications from the University of Nancy in 2012.

I have given private tutoring for four years and also have worked for a langage company which allowed me to be sent into different schools to do some covering.

Currently working as a French tutor at King's School, Canterbury, I also enjoy tutoring privately because the atmosphere and the relation is totally different. Indeed, there is less pressure, more fun.

Teaching Experience:

I have a wide teaching experience as I have worked privately, for a language company and finally for a school.
I can teach from 3 years old to any age, or follow the school program and teach the elements needed to get a high grade. But I can also offer a lesson about what you need. For example I had a retired couple who wanted to spend their retirement in France so our lessons were about how to survive and express the everyday life needs in French.

Tutoring Approach:

Tutoring means ''learning with pleasure'' for me. That means that my aims are to make the student enjoy the lesson without having to just ''learn by heart''. I had to tutor some students just after their school day so I wanted it to be positively different.

For casual learners I take a flexible approach with the first focus on confidence in speaking, but if the student has specific exam needs I can tailor the lesson towards his/her goal, with more structured grammar lessons if necessary (after years of grammar lessons during my French schooling!). I never forget that I am a the ''French speaking guide'' and the student is the pilot.

Personal Description:
Hi, my name is Sophie. I am a 2nd year student of Biochemistry at Edinburgh University, having just finished my gap year working at IBM. I love to spend my spare time either on the hockey pitch, in the kitchen or doing some art.

Teaching Experience:

Student science tutor for 2 years whilst at school
Summer Camp Leader for 3 years running, experience with international children.
Leader at Cubs, Brownies, Beavers and Rainbows
Work experience at an Adult Learning Centre

Tutoring Approach:

It has been my experience, both as a tutor and as a student, that the best way to engage with learning is to understand your working style. I personally have found certain aspects of school quite challenging but by finding the methods that most suited my needs, I was able to maximize my learning potential.

My tutoring style emphasizes collaboration and positive reinforcement in order to produce a friendly learning environment.

From my charity work abroad in Ghana to my role as Deputy Head Girl at my secondary school, I have gained the interpersonal skills necessary to develop productive and compassionate relationships with pupils. Students will find themselves excited for their lessons and eager to achieve new standards of excellence.

Author of 'Israel and the Cold War: Diplomacy, Strategy, and the Policy of the Periphery at the United Nations' (I.B. Tauris, 2013), I write for several academic journals, and review for the Royal Institute of International Affairs, Chatham House. A fluent Hebrew speaker, I was Peer Tutor in Hebrew at University College London, where I was awarded the departmental prize for excellence in the Hebrew language, and I have tutored privately in Britain, and abroad.

Tutoring Approach:

Relaxed, interactive, theme-based, and multi-disciplinary. Use of past papers, analysis, deconstruction of exam and essay questions, concepts, and requirements; development of essay, and exam structure. I pay particular attention to a student's self-confidence, and self-expression, which often serve as catalysts for enhanced self-belief and, hence, success.

Personal Description:
I grew up in south-west London, in Twickenham, before attending Tiffin School (Kingston-Upon-Thames) and Cambridge University, where I was awarded my BA (Hons) degree in History of Art. I have always engaged with extracurricular activities with enthusiasm, something which my educational institutions have given me ample opportunity to do.

My main passion has been acting. It has provided many opportunities to meet and get to know a huge range of different people, all in a challenging, intense environment. Fundamentally, it is the opportunity to engage with the perspective of another person and to attempt to embody this in actions and speech. It requires a performer to listen to and work with others on stage, and to work within a flexible, productive relationship - this is essential for any student-teacher relationship, as a dialogue begins to emerge.

My other interests have similarly complemented my academic pursuits: I have played rugby union for 14 years, up to and including university level, and used to play the french horn in the school orchestra. Both activities gave me an opportunity to voice my individual contribution to the group whilst working within a team, invaluable experience for academic discussion as well as confidence in many other areas of life. They offer different approaches to problem solving and develop some of the broader skills essential for academic success, such as self-expression, articulation, flexibility and confidence.

Teaching Experience:

My experience includes working with primary school students (age 4-6), through a voluntary program at secondary school. This involved helping children to learn to read. The weekly session required empathy and flexibility on my part, demanding an understanding that each child`s ability was completely unique, and that my approach needed to be modified to fit each person. In particular, I had to cultivate patience and a desire to listen and to understand everything the child was saying.

Whilst at university I also participated in a student run mentoring scheme, which gave unprivileged children the opportunity to understand life and work at Cambridge. It was a fascinating opportunity to understand some of the social and personal blocks to academic confidence, as well as offering ways in which these problems might be developed and overcome. Most importantly, it was a joyful experience to be able to help a younger person, and to understand that they were a unique person with their own approach to problems and solutions. By listening to him, I gradually learnt the ways in which they best communicated and how I could use those situations to our advantage as a student-teacher pair.

More recently, I have participated in a student-run university theatre tour which also comprised educational workshops. These workshops were a much bigger part of the tour than we had originally thought, and proved to be challenging at times. This was partly from the language barrier (many classes spoke little to no English, and were often too embarrassed to speak at all), but also from the unpredictable nature of the students. We had to work on our feet, employing what resources we had in a way which was meaningful, cumulative and ultimately led to an end. Our exercises required an overall structure and an ultimate purpose, but we also wanted to adjust this according to their reactions. Though I initially found this challenging, towards the end of the tour I could take charge of workshops and lead them with ease.

Tutoring Approach:

Teaching and intellectual discussion have always been an important part of my family life, and it is an activity which I enjoy on a personal as well as professional level. My time at university has developed my ability to think in this way, as well as providing an environment in which I was surrounded by these kinds of discussion, with both professors and students. The emphasis on close-contact supervision periods at Cambridge taught me the importance of helping each student understand their individual form of expression.

I would avoid didactic repetition and seek to challenge the student and invite them to contribute. As well as work done outside the tutoring time period, I would encourage tasks such as presentations and prepared discussions as much as possible. I believe this work lays an essential base for passionate intellectual discussion, and it is something which certainly helped me in my university interview.

Coupled with this development of interest in particular subject areas, I would try to help the student's method of arguing and offer sustained, constructive advice on how that might be more effective. A university candidate is only as successful as their ability to communicate effectively and succinctly, something which may require exercises as different as confidence building or syntax and grammar. But as well as this self-belief and self expression, the student would need to acknowledge that academic (and educational) progress can be achieved by listening to others and attempting to understand their point of view. This dialogic aspect is essential to my tutoring approach.

Personal Description:
I am a patient, energetic and enthusiastic first year student at Swansea University currently studying Translating and Interpreting in Italian and English and beginners Spanish. I attended Plymouth college of art and studied art and design as an extended diploma, while part taking in many TRP youth productions (Theater Royal Plymouth). I have been in cast in productions such as The World At Your Feet, Allie and the Alien and The Bus Project (a short film to raise awareness of the dangers of binge drinking in adolescents).i have always had a deep interest in performing arts and illustration and have always admired my teachers, observing their techniques of sharing their passion for the subject to their students. This made me think about how i could also use my language skills to help other people learn English as a foreign language (i was born in Italy and had to learn English from scratch myself). As a result this makes me uniquely qualified to teach both Italian and English as foreign languages due to the fact i am fluent in both.
I work well with children of all ages and can maintain a calm and positive attitude in every situation. I am known to be a very friendly and approachable individual and above all my passions, my biggest is to help others.

Teaching Experience:

i currently have no teaching experience, other than teaching my younger brother English since birth and supporting his creative and mental development.

Tutoring Approach:

I have always wanted to combine my language skills with my artistic abilities to teach a foreign language through drama and art as i think that creative expression leaves a long lasting impression and can help students remember their lessons through the distinct and fun activities that support their learning. i stand firmly by this because i have found that the majority of young people learn more effectively through colours, images, actions and most importantly memories through enjoyment. i don't think a child or adolescent cannot be fully engaged in the learning environment if they do not find the experience positively memorable. i do not believe that a student can benefit much from reading a large textbook in a non interactive and monotone environment as studies have shown that such teaching methods do not yield as successful results.

Personal Description:
I have always had a strong interest in education, and I love the English language. I am instinctively able to relate to people from all backgrounds, age groups, gender and ability and, although I came late to teaching, I have found myself to have a natural ability.

I am patient, engaging and work very effectively on a 1:1 basis.

Teaching Experience:

On my PGCE placement I taught a number of community courses, including ESOL and Literacy. I also taught Level 3 Youth Work at the Cardigan Centre, during which time I worked 1:1 with one of the learners, resulting in him completing the course and achieving the qualification.

During all my placement courses, I taught 1:1 with a variety of different learners - particularly in ESOL and Literacy.

Tutoring Approach:

I take a very thorough approach, and am always mindful that the student is at the very centre of the learning. I recognise the importance of identifying any barriers to learning, and work with the student to overcome these so that they are able to achieve their learning goals. I am a friendly and approachable teacher, and understand that establishing a good working relationship with the student is crucial for successful learning.

Personal Description:
I am currently pursuing a degree in Civil Engineering at the University College London (UCL). A result orientated, highly motivated individual, passionate in delivering the best of my abilities in achieving my goals.

Teaching Experience:

Taught lower secondary school students in relief classes when teachers were away on leave as a senior prefect. Also mentored fellow peers before A-Level examinations and conducted group study sessions to create a sense of equal level while leading the group study session with topics they did not understand.

Tutoring Approach:

In my GCSE Equivalent examinations (Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia), I have been tutored over Skype for my personal tutor left for a different state. Among peers, relatives and friends, this was a new thing and wondered how it would have worked. I had the experience of learning Physics and Additional Mathematics through voice and video call conducted twice a week where my tutor shared questions and solutions while intently listening to my thought processes as I attempted to carry out solving the problems. Before finally seeking tutoring, I was averaging a C for Additional Maths and a B for Physics. I found this method very helpful and managed to score As in Mathematics, Additional Mathematics and Physics in the final paper. This is a way I hope to implement when teaching over the internet.
