My name is Leonor. I am from Spain and 38 years old.

I am a teacher of Spanish and teach standard, Castilian Spanish, the official language of modern Spain. I love my profession and find teaching more a pleasure than a job. I have discovered that teaching is a two way experience where the teacher often learns as much from the students as the students learn from the teacher. I am a very experienced teacher, head of faculty, head of sixth form, examiner and writer. I have recently worked for one of the major examination boards on the new specifications for both G.C.S. E and A2 Level.

During my career as a teacher I have taught philosophy and religious studies to Advanced level and English, history, religious studies, geography and citizenship to G.C.S.E. I also specialise in developing study skills and examination techniques in a range of subjects. I have prepared VI form students for university and UCAS application, including Oxbridge, and acted as a mentor to new entrants to the teaching profession.

I am a freelance writer specialising in education, social, religious and moral issues and I also create e-learning resources for an international educational e-learning-platform provider.

Teaching Experience:

My teaching experience at both G.C.S.E. and Advanced level has been extensive. I am an examiner for two major exam boards and have diverse experience of creating original teaching resources tailored to the needs of pupils.

I have spent most of my career teaching across the ability and age range in 11-18 comprehensive schools although I have also taught in the independent sector.

I am also a part-time on-line tutor for one of the Oxford colleges.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe that the key to success for most pupils is to develop their skills and self-confidence to enhance their ability to successfully complete their examination by developing study skills and examination techniques.

My first session with a tutee and their parents is to establish their needs and goals. Together we draw up a plan of the work which we will pursue. This plan will be reviewed regularly and a progress report compiled.
Each of the subsequent sessions comprises of:
review of any homework set
review of any problems which have occurred that week
lesson on a topic previously decided upon
My primary aim is to help my tutees overcome any difficulties which they are having with their work and to help them to achieve their goals both in the short-term and the long term. Secondly, I aim to give my tutees confidence in their own abilities and to help them develop their skills necessary to succeed in their examinations.
Relevant homework is set as a means of reinforcing the development of skills since assessment and feedback procedures largely rely on this.

My name is Jessica and I am a 27 year old tutor from Brixton, South London. I have grown up with a great education from both schooling and tutors, and aim to keep up this high standard in my teaching. My secondary school, Heathfield Private Girls in Pinner, was a great starter for me and showed me a wide variety of effective teaching methods in all areas of education. When specialising at Woodhouse College in English, Drama, Biology and French I had some of the most inspiring and creative teachers who pushed me to a level I did not know I could achieve. As a result I had a firm foundation for my English and Drama Bachelor of the Arts at the University of Birmingham which made the course all the more enjoyable. I will be studying my Masters in October at the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama.

Teaching Experience:

My most recent pupil was retaking his A-Level drama exam during his gap year. By working together for 6 week, we managed to bring his grade up from a U to a B, allowing him the chance of a university placement. Other pupils have ranged in age and ability from first years of GCSE to children for homework help. My mother is and has always been a French teacher, so from a young age I was helping to look after and share responsibility for her classes. This included an after-school French club for children from the age of 4 to 11 years called Jeux D'Enfants and also helping organise and plan some private lessons. At College and University I tutored the younger siblings of my close friends for their 11+ and GCSE and also held weekly Shakespeare study groups for my course. I have recently decided to become a teaching assistant for a secondary school in North London and am excited to tutor once more.

I was more than fortunate to come across Jessica's profile back in April 2012.

From the moment I sent her my initial email, there was both an element of professionalism and caring. The amount of effort and detail she put into my 12 lesson's between April and late May was second to none.
In terms of what Jess brought to my lesson's (We looked at two play's for my written exam. Lysistrata and A Comedy of Errors) she had a lot of material on the latter having studied it at school. From character profiles to stage description's she had an extensive amount of notes, chart and diagrams as well as an understanding of the play and exam. As for lysistratta, this was a play she had never read, by my first lessons she had not only read it but had started to plan out potential lesson planners, as the weeks went by the material and effort she put into each lesson continue. During lesson's I found that she had a very cool and relaxed attitude. She's still young and has an understanding of not only the subject but also how a-levels can effect students and how to best deal with this pressure.

In the end however it's all about the result I suppose. In my last exam (Unit 4 theatre studies) I got under 20% the year before. My finale grade fell from B to D. After my lesson's with Jessica I got 78% and my grade jump back up to B. Added to my A and B in my two other subject I was accepted to the university of Southampton, something I couldn't have imagine a year prior.

Jessica had a huge part to play in this and I would recommend her to anyone looking for a tutor.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe that no one pupil is the same, so it is impossible to define a teaching method as it must be adapted to the needs of the student. From experience of being tutored myself, I know how frustrating it can be to be taught in a way that doesn't suit your thinking, so with each pupil I ask them how they learn and absorb information best. As a result I spend the first lesson going over what the pupil does not understand, and why, thus gaining an comprehension of how to explain it better. I also like to push the student to think beyond their boundaries, or the boundaries necessary to simply get the grade, as this is how exceptional thinking and a sense of achievement come about.

I have some experience of teaching English as a second language to adults.

Tutoring Approach:

I always try to adopt a proactive approach to teaching that inspires, and enables, students to get the most out of their learning experience. I focus in particular on individual needs and interests in order to engage with students as much as possible. Learning is a serious matter, but it doesn't have to be boring, or intimidating. I am also a great advocate of kinaesthetic learning styles which allow students to practise English in a fun and stimulating way.

Personal Description:
I'm an expat Canadian whose been living in the UK for nearly 5 years now. I've been in the teaching industry since 2008 when I graduated from teachers college, and have experience teaching children, teens, and adults in Canada, Britain, Korea, Thailand, and Spain. I've travelled to most places in Europe, Asia, and South East Asia, and am hoping to continue my travels soon. I'm also a yoga teacher and daily practitioner as yoga is definitely a passion of mine. I have ideas of taking more yoga teaching courses as well as holistic health courses in the future in order to add to my repertoire of teaching skills.

Teaching Experience:

I received my Bachelors of Education in Primary-Junior Education in 2008, and then had 2 years of substitute teaching experience in both Canada and the UK. Due to lack of jobs in both countries, I decided to teach for 2 years in Seoul, South Korea, which was a life-changing time as I learned a vast amount of not only teaching but also life skills. I then received my CELTA certificate in Thailand, which has since allowed me to teach English as a Foreign Language to adults. I've been teaching at a private language school in Southampton since 2012, with a brief stint in Valencia, Spain, where I taught children at a summer camp, as well as adults at a private language school. Throughout these years, I've tutored a variety of people, including children and adults.

Tutoring Approach:

I try to make my ESL teaching and materials as real as possible since the purpose of English (as a foreign language) education is to be used in the real world. I'm extremely active and creative, and I like for the students to be extremely involved in and accountable for the own education. I run a student-centred classroom where the teacher facilitates rather than dictates. I'm supportive and knowledgeable about the content, but always try to elicit answers from the students themselves. These qualities can of course be transferred to any teaching moment and to any subject, whether it be learning English grammar to use in the workforce, or be deciphering a text for an exam. I would rather give them tools and strategies to use on their own rather than just give them answers that only have value in that one moment.
