Personal Description:
I am a former Head of Science with over 10 years' teaching experience. I enjoy teaching and tutoring and would like to concentrate on tutoring alone for the foreseeable future.

I offer solid, comprehensive, support in Science and Maths for all the English Examination boards - including the International Baccalaureate. I can (and do) also enter/administer/teach/ and prepare students for GCSE/A-level Science, and Maths, examinations - privately (outside of the school environment). This service could be invaluable to students with either: special needs; want more control over their own education, or more simply just need a second chance to achieve their aspirations.

Teaching Experience:

Over ten years' experience teaching biology, chemistry and physics to A-level. Also, about seven years' experience teaching mathematics to A-level and about five years' experience working with special needs students - particularly Asperger syndrome.

Plus, over three years tutoring experience in science and mathematics - from SAT level to A-level.

Tutoring Approach:

I prefer to work with the knowledge students already possess and build from there: expect friendly learning targets, pre-tests, progress tests and honest progress reports on strengths and weakness and plenty of homework.

I am very calm, patient and supportive with my students. My lessons are structured to provide exactly what you need to know, well explained, and tailored to meet each student's specific needs: includes a variety of hands on material and varied learning styles supported with after lesson homework.

I provide good support with English and Maths literacy along with plenty of advice/hands-on experience with structuring/answering examination questions - to get students solidly prepared for their examinations.

Personal Description:
I have over 25 years as an art and acting tutor, and creativity coach.

I am also a professional artist and actor. I have sold paintings in exhibitions and for private commissions. As an actor I have worked for the BBC and founded my own theatre company, which toured Europe and North America with 5 star sell out shows.

I founded my own art academy in 2009 and currently run drawing and painting, writing and drama retreat holidays in France. As well as holding regular one day art and drama workshops in Bucks and Herts, UK.

I was interviewed by the Artist and Illustrators magazine in 2011, who wrote articles on myself and my art courses and retreats in their January and February issues.

Teaching Experience:

Previous teaching positions include:
Stagecoach
Bigfoot
The Birmingham Theatre School
The School of the Science of Acting
Victoria University in Canada
Sheffield University
Renaissance Arts Retreat in France

Tutoring Approach:

I believe that everyone has talent and can be creative.

I haven't met a person that I couldn't help become a more skilled and competent artist or actor. And I have successfully taught many students that weren't making any progress with other teachers.

I make sure that my students feel that they have a kind and supportive space to learn and explore.

I also use various holistic methods, including guided meditation, creativity exercises and techniques, that help decode the artistic process and help students become competent artists.

For teaching drawing and painting I also use right brain exercises and in acting I teach students techniques (often called "Method Acting") drawn from Sandford Meisner, Uta Hagen and William Ball.

My students get great results from this way of being taught and I have many testimonials to confirm this.

I have worked in Edinburgh, London and New York City as an actor and writer with experience in both straight plays, new writing, musical theatre and developmental pieces. I have been a teacher for the past three years in various settings including regular weekend drama schools, holiday intensive performance schools and one day workshops. I am an active volunteer with the British Red Cross where I have trained in First Aid with Enhanced Skills as well as a training others as well.

I am very patient, constructive, and friendly, with a very approachable manner.

My skills lie both in textual analysis, research/study skills, and performance. I can offer help with exam nerves using techniques from performance, as well as functional skills.

I was always a keen learner in school with very high standards of achievement.

Teaching Experience:

I have worked with all ages of children in drama settings as a teacher and facilitator over the past three years, with two years experience tutoring one to one on audition technique and performance preparation. I also have several years experience training others in First Aid.

Tutoring Approach:

Before tutoring any subject I would always like to take time to extensively review the syllabus and prescribed course material. I like to engage in fun ways to learn with real emphasis on better learning, not just hitting marks. Ultimately the goal is to better your exam results but if we can make you a better learner then there is a life skill gained as well.

Personal Description:
I am a fully qualified secondary school art teacher, and university lecturer in History of Art. I completed my PhD in History of Art at University College London (UCL) in 2013. I have published my research in a number of academic journals and edited book collections, and I am a practicing artist, currently based in Hulme, Manchester. I am also currently a Junior Research Fellow at University College London's Institute of Advanced Studies.

I'm based in London Monday-Wednesday and can meet students within 10 miles of Bloomsbury (WC1E 6) on these days. From Thursday-Sunday I'm based in Hulme, Manchester and can travel up to 20 miles from the city centre, or meet students at my central Manchester art studio. I'm available for Skype appointments at any time.

Teaching Experience:

I am a fully trained secondary school teacher, specialising in Art & Design and Photography at KS3, KS4 & KS5. I have 10 years teaching experience, including working as a specialist Learning Support Teacher, and in Special Needs schools catering for children and young adults with a range of special educational needs, from moderate learning difficulties to profound and multiple disabilities.

I have particular expertise in studio practice (art and design), digital and darkroom photography (theory, history and practice), literacy, social and vocational skills, as well as History of Art, Anthropology and History of Medicine at undergraduate level.

I am also experienced in teaching at undergraduate level, having taught gallery-based first year History of Art courses, for University College London's History of Art Department, and on the History of Art degree programme at the University of Manchester.

Tutoring Approach:

I take a one-to-one, flexible approach to learning and teaching, which first establishes the needs and goals of the student, and then sets out clearly structured strategies for achieving these goals. These may be results-focused when preparing for exams, or aimed at developing a broader understanding of a subject area, depending upon the student's own priorities. I am happy to work with any course materials the student may provide, and I am familiar with all current GCSE and A Level syllabuses. I am able to guide both GCSE and A Level students through their studies, offering consistent, dedicated 1-2-1 tuition for the full term of the course. I can also provide practical tuition for students who are preparing their art portfolios for University submission, and can offer assistance with UCAS forms and references for students who undertake long-term A Level tuition with me.

Tutoring may take place at the student's home, or at my art studio in central Manchester, where I can provide a range of art materials and resources by prior arrangement, for more intensive practical art sessions. Please note that I can travel within 20 miles of central Manchester based on the fee structure quoted below, travelling further will incur a small additional fuel fee.

I have had recent successes with my private students, one of whom attended one-to-one sessions at my Manchester studio for 8 weeks and improved her predicted GCSE Art result of a B by two grades, achieving an A* in her final art exam. My most recent undergraduate student also attained a First overall in her History of Art degree, achieving a high score of 78 on her dissertation project, with intensive tutorial support conducted via Skype.

*Please note that due to the time-intensive nature of undergraduate level tutoring, I am only able to take on a maximum of three undergraduate tutees at any given time. Please see below for my current availability for tutoring at this level.*

I am currently tutoring ONE undergraduate student.

STUDENT TESTIMONIALS

GCSE Level:

A Level:

University Undergraduate Level:

"I wanted a tutor to give me help and advice on my undergraduate history of art dissertation. I needed reassurance that what I was writing was okay and some one to proof read and give me their opinion on my arguments. Gemma was brilliant, she gave me the confidence that I needed to keep going with my dissertation by reassuring me that I was on the right track. She discussed my ideas with me in detail, proof read all of my work and suggested and sourced articles that I might want to have a look at. I have recently graduated from Newcastle University with a First in History of Art and Media and I know that I owe Gemma a huge thank you for the support she gave me on the way to achieving this."

Personal Description:
Hi, I'm Rosie and I recently graduated from the University of Oxford with a degree in English Language and Literature. I absolutely loved reading English, and am keen to instill a similar passion for literature in all my pupils. I am particularly committed to allowing those with additional needs to realise their full potential.

In my previous tutoring, I have been struck by the impact of education on each student's holistic development. Individual help and support can increase personal and social well-being, alongside the more immediate academic improvements.

Outside my studies, I enjoy playing the flute, reading, baking and spending time with friends and family.

*Currently offering Oxbridge application support and personal statement advice-get ahead this summer!* I scored in the top 5% for the Oxford ELAT and would love to support others in these somewhat intimidating aptitude tests!*

Teaching Experience:

I have extensive experience teaching primary school, secondary school and adult pupils, over the past 5 years. I have also worked successfully in the past with pupils with Dyspraxia, Dyslexia and non-verbal learning difficulties.

Here are what some pupils/parents had to say:
Mother of 15 year old boy: "It made a big difference to his self-confidence." "You have spent a great deal of time preparing for lessons and producing your own work sheets tailored to ****'s needs. You have worked out the best ways to help him understand and learn-ie. visually, and produced clear, colourful study aids."

Mother of 15 year old girl: "For ****, your methods and overall grasp and handling of her requirements were 'tailor made.'"
"You never made her feel inadequate-just nudged her along building her confidence. She blossomed under your tuition."

Adult pupil: "Although it's been a stressful time for me, I have enjoyed re-learning these subjects. This is largely due to your teaching skills and bubbly personality." "Thank you for your patience, above and beyond work and your time with me."

Tutoring Approach:

I'm enthusiastic and hope to give tutees confidence in their own ability to succeed. I take a relaxed and friendly approach, but also expect the work to be completed on time and to the best of the pupil's ability so that lessons are a worthwhile experience. I really enjoy teaching and hope that students will also enjoy and look forward to their lessons.

I plan every lesson beforehand, creating individual activities and worksheets that are tailored to the student's specific interests and needs. My style of teaching is active and visual. I attempt to find original and exciting ways to approach topics, as I believe that whilst hard work is important, ultimately it is vital to inspire the tutee. This way they can reach their utmost potential through a combination of my input and their engagement with the subject.

I assist students with the sometimes daunting task of essay planning and addressing essay questions, be it at KS3 level or University.

Every lesson is different, as every pupil is different.

Personal Description:
A graduate of Cambridge and Durham I have specialised in ancient languages and literature. While based in Durham I am currently completing a PhD in Old Norse literature at the Birkbeck College, University of London.

Teaching Experience:

As well as current private tutoring in English lit, Lang and Classics at all levels I am an undergraduate tutor at Durham University. I have strong experience helping students reach their full potential and gain the grades they need or higher. I have taught both online and in person, both at GCSE-adult. I was selected as an open day lecturer for Newnham college Cambridge in 2008 and I have attended several courses on lecturing in secondary and higher education both at Birkbeck and Oxford.

Tutoring Approach:

I seek to inspire my students with the same passion and interest I feel for language and literature, texts and contexts. I tailor my approach to the need of each student, but in general teach not by lecturing but by posing questions which lead the student to a greater understanding of text and context. I aim to show students how to enjoy the subject as well as teach them the means and methods to make their studying and writing easier. I have a great deal of experience helping students with exam and essay technique.

Personal Description:
Hi I'm Diogo and I'm very passionate about teaching. I'm currently studying for a PhD in nano materials, and I believe I can not only help you through your exams but also to find chemistry more appealing. I'm available to tutor from my home at Preston or to travel to close locations if travel expenses paid.

Teaching Experience:

During this past year I've assisted several students on their research projects, which required not only my practical lab skills but also my theoretical chemistry knowledge. I'm also currently teaching (demonstrating) on two chemistry modules at UCLan (1st and 2nd years).

Tutoring Approach:

My motto is: if you can't explain it simply enough then you don't understand it well enough, thus I try to develop an interactive and practical-thinking teaching.

I strongly believe that a tutor's duty is to try different approaches to those used in school, and without disregarding the syllabus, how the modules can be looked at from different angles.

My ultimate goal is to show to the tutees how chemistry can be an enjoyable subject.

I also undertook more broader courses, in my first year; Mathematics, Chemistry, Psychology, human biology and more.

For my final year at university I undertook a research project which looked at the effects of phytochemicals on pathogenic and non-pathogenic GIT bacteria. I have also worked on a research project with William Grants and sons where micro-algae were used to remove ammonia from a waste effluent to comply with SEPA regulation.

I attained a very high 2:1 honors degree in Biology.
I also have good A-Levels in:

Mathematics
Biology
Sport and Physical education

Teaching Experience:

I am a keen sports player, and have played competitively for my county. As a more experienced team member I have given coaching and advice in regards to technique, position, tactics and fitness. I have also trained colleagues at work in using computer systems and imparting study related information.

As a fourth year student I was given the opportunity to attend laboratory practical sessions to assist the lecturer in teaching new students. I taught them how to work within a laboratory environment. This included sterile techniques, microscopy and staining, molecular separation, and DNA extraction techniques.

Tutoring Approach:

Initially, I would like to have a meeting with the student, either face to face, over the phone, or via online communication. I wouldn't charge for the initial contact as this will help me to produce a learning structure which is catered to improving areas which the student is struggling on, or wishes to improve upon. After an agreed time period, we would reflect on our learning, and will assess their progress. I will achieve this by creating short term and long term goals which both the student and tutor agree upon.

Personal Description:
I am a German teacher with a BA (Hons) German Degree from the University of Manchester. As a part of my Degree I spent a year in Heidelberg, Germany as an Erasmus student. After graduating I went back to Norway where I studied English and completed a PGCE in German at the University in Oslo, which has provided me with Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) within the UK. I then returned to Manchester in August 2015.

In addition to studying German and English, I have had the opportunity to do Dutch and Italian courses. These have reminded me of both the challenges and the joy one experiences learning a language from scratch, and made it easier for me to identify with my students.

Studying German and other languages have had such a positive impact on my life. It would therefore make me really happy if I could help you get better at either German, English or Norwegian.

Teaching Experience:

I have 3 years of experience teaching beginners as well as advanced learners of German and English on both lower and secondary schools. In addition, I worked as a tutor for a private teaching agency, teaching German and English one to one. The pupils were differing in ability level aged ranged from 14-16.This experience gave me the opportunity to enhance my ability to quickly adapt my teaching to the pupil's individual needs and explore a variety of possible ways to improve his/her learning.

Tutoring Approach:

As a language teacher I believe it is important to focus on not only the actual language, but also on learning strategies and giving the learner continuous feedback. In addition, I find, it is crucial to motivate and to make learning the language fun by varying the methods of teaching by using resources online, music or playing games.
