Personal Description:
Hello, I'm a tutor living in York, ready to help you or your child improve your Maths or Science!

I love teaching and am passionate about helping students not only to improve their skills but also to learn to love Maths and Science!

I'm doing my PhD in Electronic Engineering at the University of York, and I have a Masters degree in Acoustics from the University of Salford, and a Bachelors Degree in Physics from the University of Manchester.

I teach a wide range of ages and abilities, from young children (min. age ~8) and older children/teenagers (up to A-level), as well as adults.
I really enjoy tutoring and have a great deal of experience. Previous pupils have improved greatly in both skills and confidence.

Teaching Experience:

I have tutored both boys and girls, aged 7 to 26, for over 500 hours in total, since 2010. I used to be a beaver scout leader, and I have been helping my younger siblings, cousins, and friends with their maths and science problems for years!

Tutoring Approach:

Working through problems / material in textbooks, talking through ideas and explaining concepts.
This varies for each student - different people of different ages have different learning methods!
Once I have established where pupils have gaps in their understanding I will help them to comprehend and consolidate these areas.

Personal Description:
I have a degree in English Literature from the University of East Anglia where I also studied Creative Writing.

I am a freelance writer, contributing articles on literature for The Guardian, have a fortnightly series on Guardian On-Line, and regularly review books for Time Out.

I am currently writing my debut novel.

Teaching Experience:

Informal coaching of friends' children. This something I have greatly enjoyed and has proved to be a great success. I am now keen to develop this on a more professional basis.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe literature is best taught with enthusiasm, thereby making it accessable and less intimidating. Once a basic understanding of the work has been achieved it is easier to explore the more complex themes such as character, imagery, dramatic arc, etc.

Personal Description:
I am an Open University graduate having completed an BA(Hons) degree. I chose my own programme of study which consisted of French,English Language Studies with GCSE/Standard grade Mandarin Chinese and Spanish. After my degree, I undertook an A-level/Higher Grade Maths course and GCSE/Standard Grade level Latin course to keep my study skills fresh and updated whilst complimenting my degree.

Prior to this, I under went a City and Guilds in Delivering Learning which taught me the vital skills required to be able to plan and construct lessons. In conjunction to this, I have also achieved my Level 1 certificate in British Sign Language.

Teaching Experience:

I am currently hired by Borders College based in Galashiels where I teach adult evening classes in Mandarin Chinese and French, which I love. Seeing my students grow and learn is one of the main reasons why I entered the tutoring and teaching profession. In conjunction with my college role, I also privately teach British Sign Language and Latin

In addition, I have taught French to various ages ranging from Primary right through to Adult in various capacities.Furthermore, I have taught English as a Foreign Language which was a brilliant experience as it gave me a valuable insight into how people learn not only English but languages in general.

Tutoring Approach:

My approach to tutoring comprises of friendliness and patience. Having studied at home for my degree, I understand the importance of a structured and warm learning environment. My motto has always been "There is no such thing as a stupid question". If you do not know the answer then the only way to find the answer out is to ask the question, whether it is for the first or tenth time. As I am so passionate about French and English along with reading and writing skills, I feel that lessons with me will be a positive, exciting and worthwhile experience.

I have always strongly believed that education is available to everyone, regardless of past experiences. The only thing that I feel matters when it comes to learning is a want to learn, if you have that then anything is possible.

Personal Description:
I am an Oxford graduate who also runs some youth work based at a local church. Tutoring provides a way for me both to encourage young people directly and also provides much needed funds for the project. Science has been a passion of mine since an early age and I hope I'm able to pass on some of that enthusiasm to my students.

Teaching Experience:

In a job where experience is vital, I've been privileged to tutor students for almost 15 years. It's enabled me to build up a good selection of resources, teaching materials and illustrations - as well as a very good working knowledge of the syllabus of all exam boards, including International Baccalaureate.

Tutoring Approach:

The focus of my tutoring is three fold. First, and most importantly - explanation. Facts are learnt so much more easily if they make sense. Secondly, exam technique. Many students find they know the material but struggle to then apply it to exam questions, so we'll spend a good deal of time looking at questions and working out how to unlock them. Finally, and not least, we look at reducing silly mistakes, which so often cost far too many marks.

Personal Description:
I'm a Chinese girl who is really hard working and self-disciplined. I am a postgraduate in Translation and Interpreting at University of Essex. I did my bachelor's degree in English in China and I was the top student in my class.

Apart from the high levels of enthusiasm and commitment, as I have been trained intensively to be a Simultaneous Interpreter/ Conference Interpreter, I enjoy the advantage of good presentation and speaking manner. It's proven that I have strong teamwork spirit and multitask skills. I can work under high pressure and am able to schedule priorities and perform/delegate accordingly to effectively accomplish tasks at hand. Living in China for 20 years, I can always look at things in new perspective. Culturally I am strongly adaptive since I can smoothly operate in two entirely different environments.

Teaching Experience:

I have tutored some primary school kids on their English course when I was in China. Their class performance was much better after my tutoring. I managed to get a Teacher's Certificate by taking the national exam when I was in China.

I have a real passion for languages and have been very privileged to have had the opportunities to go and live in the countries where these languages are spoken and experience the diverse culture each country has to offer. Teaching is something that I am very passionate about and want to help others have the same opportunities I have been fortunate to have.

Tutoring Approach:

I work closely with my students to customize the most effective one-on-one tutoring solution. I listen. Before designing a module, I make careful observation and evaluate the student's ability. I teach with the most patience.

Personal Description:
Hello! and ¡hola!

My name is Cristina and I am a Spanish tutor. If you want to improve your skills in my beautiful language, I can help you. I have been a Spanish Tutor for children and adults. I have also been a language student during my whole life, so I certainly understand and share the passion of learning another language, as it gets you to a whole new world that can be discovered just by words.

Teaching Experience:

I have been a Spanish and Catalan Tutor for the last 4 years. I have a BA in Journalism and Media Studies and the Certificate as a Spanish Teacher for Foreigner Learners.

Tutoring Approach:

I usually plan the lessons individually combining grammar exercises with readings and audiovisual content. As my main jobs have been related to journalism and cinema, I like to enroll the student in a creative way of learning Spanish, always focused in the practical act of communication.

I can also offer support for GCSE and A-level if you are struggling with a grammar that is a bit different than yours in English. Don't give up! It's easier than what you think, you just need to find your own method to understand the rules of the language.

If you are a current student, if your job requires to know another language or if you want to be fluent in Spanish for that trip you have been planning, get in contact. Let me know what your needs are and we will find a way to make Spanish be easy, interesting and fun to learn.

Personal Description:
I have been playing guitar for 17 years, ever since my Dad unexpectedly presented me with an acoustic guitar one Christmas. I've never looked back, and in the intervening years I've also picked up bass, drums and piano. In 2002 during my summer holidays from University I attended a 10 week full time course at the Guitar Institute in London.

I have played with a number of bands throughout my musical career. I am currently actively involved in two bands and we have been fortunate enough to play to audiences across the UK and in Europe, with gigs in Germany, Austria, Portugal, Italy and Norway. I have also played in Musical Theatre productions such as Jesus Christ Superstar, Fame and Footloose.

Teaching Experience:

I am very happy teaching any age and level of student from complete beginners to experienced players.

Tutoring Approach:

I teach acoustic and electric guitar, covering rock, pop, indie, blues, soul, funk, metal and folk. However, more importantly than any specific style, I teach how to approach, practice and learn music in general. These disciplines can be applied to any style.

I ensure my students get a thorough understanding of the technical and theoretical aspects of playing guitar. However, I use real pieces of music to reinforce and practice these elements so that they are fun to play and do not become dry and repetitive.

I can support students working towards grade exams if required. However, this is not obligatory and it is entirely possible to become an excellent guitarist without taking grades. The grade boards I'm most familiar with are Rockschool and Trinity Rock & Pop.

Personal Description:
I have recently completed a PhD in Applied Maths, and wish to use some of my experience of the subject to help other students reach their potential.

Teaching Experience:

I have several years of experience of tutoring undergraduate students in maths at the University of Sheffield. These were mostly Fundamental and 1st year maths courses, at a similar standard to A-level.

Tutoring Approach:

I can provide one-to-one or small group tuition in a relaxed, friendly environment tailored to the student's needs. My approach is mainly to establish areas of weakness in the student's understanding, and try to help them overcome these by explaining the basic principles and working through example questions with them.

Personal Description:
My name is Lucy, I'm 19, and I am currently studying a degree in Theology at the University of St Andrews. I'm extremely passionate about learning and education, and hope to pass this on to my students. Specifically, I tutor A Level Philosophy/Theology, Classical Civilisation and English Literature, which I received A*-B grades in. To add to this, I can provide tutoring for the Extended Project Qualification, something which I immensely enjoyed and achieved an A*. I am friendly and approachable, and training in theatre from a young age means that I am comfortable working with others, as well as on my own initiative. This means that I can also help with tutoring for AS Level Theatre Studies (I achieved an A grade) and LAMDA exams (I achieved a Distinction in Grade 8 Solo Acting).

Teaching Experience:

I have no formal teaching experience, however, have often lead revision and study groups to great success. I would like to use this experience to help others.

Tutoring Approach:

It would be tailored to each student, as I am a firm believer that everyone works in different ways. My tutoring would be as interactive as possible, and lead the student to the answer without spoon feeding them. This is extremely important when preparing for university, as you often have to seek answers on your own. Tutoring can be tailored to fit expanding knowledge, preparing for an exam, or both. I am to give the student a solid understanding of the subject they need tutoring in, as well as confidence.
