Barry is a retired scientist, based in Taunton. He has mentored junior staff his whole career, as well as organising and delivering workshops and seminars to professional clients, and from 2009 also taught Environmental Sciences and Biology in various colleges. Semi-retired since 2011, he offers private tuition in and around the Taunton area in Environmental and Biomedical Sciences to Degree level, Biology to A level, and Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Maths to GCSE level. He also teaches adult numeracy and coaches in Maths and Logic for college and professional entrance exams, including US-entry SATS.

Teaching Experience:

Since 2009 Barry has taught General and Human Biology and Combined Science to A level, mainly to young adults, for example at Weston College, at Frome College, and for Somerset Skills and Learning (on their Access to Higher Education courses). He is halfway through a Post Graduate Certificate in Education at Somerset College.

He has been offering private tuition since Sept 2011, and had 20 students in 2014-15. He will travel for up to 15 minutes from Taunton on a sliding scale of travel costs, with no travel charged within TA1. Students may if they prefer come to Taunton, and Barry also tutors online.

Teaching Experience:

I have been teaching English as a Foreign Language since 1994 and have worked in Malaysia as well as the UK. I spent eight years in Malaysia working in private language schools. In addition, I spent two years teaching English to GCSE level at a boarding school.

More recently, I have worked in prisons teaching English to both foreign nationals and local prisoners. I have also taught ESOL at local colleges. I have had some experience of working with small groups of children. My specialist subject areas are English as a Foreign Language, English grammar and pronunciation.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe that each student has different goals and needs. Therefore, I adopt a flexible approach to learning depending on what the student hopes to achieve. I believe that grammar is important and find that many students request help in this area. I also believe that reading is very important and have developed suitable resources for use with both adults and younger learners. I also work a lot on pronunciation and conversation skills. Generally, a course will include practise of all five skills with more emphasis on certain areas according to the individual needs of students.

I have done peer to peer teaching in my Secondary school where I would help other students at lunchtime or after school.

Five years ago i finished my Economics degree (4 years) in University of La Corua (Spain) and also i did a course about Stock Market Analysis in University of La Corua. I am a qualified teacher with 3 years experience of successfully teaching Biology to GCSE and A-Level. Having recently relocated and now living and working in East London, I am looking to tutor at weekends or weekday evenings.

I have an Upper Second Class BSc degree, with Honours, from the University of Leeds in Human Genetics. This course contained a significant amount of Chemistry, Biology and Mathematics, further building on my previous qualifications (including 3 A's at A-level, 6 A*s and 5 A's at GCSE).

Additionally, I have had two years experience in industry. This includes 18 months spent working as a project and account manager for a successful biotechnology company, and a further 6 months spent working in a radiotherapy department as an assistant practitioner. Both of these roles heavily involved the application of scientific principles, contributing to the knowledge I hold of the relevance of science to the real world.

Teaching Experience:

I have three years experience teaching KS3, KS4 and KS5 Biology at a high achieving well established Church of England School in Bolton. A large percentage of my teaching timetable included teaching Biology to high ability pupils at KS5. In Summer 2015, every single one of my A2 pupils progressed to achieve and/or exceed their target grades, with 7 of my 30 pupils achieving A*s. During this time I worked closely with the Head of Biology to develop schemes of work and resources to help better structure and streamline our teaching of the specification. In order to further enrich the quality of my teaching, I successfully applied to AQA for the position of examiner, and I have just completed my first summer of examining (GCSE). I therefore consider myself to have an up to date knowledge and understanding of current curriculum developments.

I have recently started in the new position as Teacher of Biology a the Newham Collegiate Sixth Form Centre: an outstanding provider of A Level education based in East London. The college opened in September 2014 and aims to push able local students to enable them to progress to the best and most competitive universities, including Oxford and Cambridge.

Tutoring Approach:

Biology helps pupils to understand the world around them, inspires their curiosity and encourages them to ask questions. Such thought processes should be nurtured and encouraged by utilising activities and questioning techniques that excite the imagination whilst portraying the relevance and application of science in the wider world.

My approach to tutoring involves teaching beyond the specification, to encourage a thorough, rich understanding of the subject by providing additional details that might be glossed over in the classroom. This allows pupils to make links between topics, enabling them to apply their knowledge to unfamiliar contexts. I will ensure pupils are familiar with the different ways questions can be presented, by utilising past paper questions where neccessary.

Since graduating in 2013, I have been working as a doctor in London and have completed my surgical and gynaecological part 1 exams. At A-level I studied Biology, Chemistry, French and Physics, achieving a national Top 5 candidate result for Biology A-level. As a tutor, I would describe myself as very friendly and relaxed. Teaching Experience:

I received formal training in teaching whilst at medical school and have extensive experience teaching both colleagues and medical students. I have advised various students and friends on applications for medical school and speciality training in medicine. Whilst at boarding school, I helped the younger students with prep and have experience of helping with both GSCE and A-level biology.

Tutoring Approach:

As a child, I learned by being told, by beatings, shaming and a strict examination system. As you can imagine I didn't learn much that I could later apply to my academic life. As a result, I became an inveterate learner, always interested in learning the next thing. At one point, the drive to learn was because I didn't see myself as being good enough. Later on, that drive became an interest in discovering my own abilities as well as about helping others. I have now learned so much about how not to teach that I have gained good insight into how learning happens. I am keen to ensure all my learners learn how to learn and understand how to apply what they discover.

Teaching Experience:

My background is in teaching, training and facilitation. I have over 25 years experience of teaching in different forms having worked within primary, secondary and further education settings. I am an NVQ / TAQA assessor and trained and assessed Parenting Practitioners and other candidates up to Level 5 in Health & Social Care. I have specialist skills in Personal Effectiveness subjects such as Report Writing, Speed Reading, Presentation Skills.

Tutoring Approach:

Being a private tutor used to be the preserve of only those with the highest qualifications and the greatest experience. Now all that's changed.

However good a tutor is, the learner needs to be astute in order know if the tutor is a good match for her / him. Importantly, making the right choice can be complex.
Here are three tips to help you decide if I am or someone else is right for you. The following tips describe how I teach and how I will enable you to be an independent learner.

1. Look for a tutor who can teach you how to learn
Here's a funny thing learners study a subject, sometimes for months and years and can come away with no long-term memory of the underpinning principles of the subject. As disturbing, they have no ongoing understanding of the subject. They are unable to apply what they tried to learn. This is easily resolved by clearing up past issues with learning. In Applied Scholastics it is now well known that if as a learner, you are helped to do so, you can learn any subject. This is central to how I teach.

2. Look for tutors who understand the main barriers to learning and can help you overcome them
There are three main barriers to study. They relate to confusion over an idea, missing out critical steps and having unclear ideas about the subject under study. Gaining a day to day facility with overcoming those barriers is key to effective and efficient study. I use these methods to help my own reading and study. I will introduce them to you so that you can use them too.

3. Look for tutors who can help you find the information you need so that you keep expanding your own understanding of the subject

Sometimes, a learner during a course of study will find that s/he wants to give up. Have you ever experienced this? Whenever that happens it is because there is something - an idea, a symbol, a form of punctuation, the use of a word, or something else - that you did not understand. Without the proper factual information on this and without the correct knowledge of why and how this happens, the learner will struggle. Without knowing what remedies to apply, the learner will give up.

When you study, you are investing time and energy. In this case, money too. If you want to discover more about how you learn, what your barriers to study are and how to understand more, you will benefit from being an independent learner. That will repay your investment.

Those three critical points should help you decide if I could be right for you. They briefly describe the way in which I would work with you and enable you to be an independent learner.

I would like to to share my chemistry and science knowledge with school and college level students and this is my motivation to start giving tuition in science subjects.

Science Lecturer at Peterborough College
6 months of teaching experience in Indian schools (primary as well as secondary)
Supported daily classroom activities and helped students with their assignments.
Planned and prepared daily and weekly lesson plans for children of different age groups.
As a science teacher conducted lab experiments for primary, secondary and higher secondary level students.

I have excellent knowledge of chemistry as I did my M.Sc, M.Tech, PhD in chemistry. Apart from being highly educated in my subject I have high level of patience and love for teaching children. Personal Description:
MA in English Language, PGCE, experienced examiner of GCSE English Language for AQA exam board (5 years). I have been teaching for six years and have been awarded outstanding by Ofsted in school inspections. I can tutor GCSE English Language and/or Literature, English Grammar, and entrance exams. I am passionate about my subject and I also like to use it as a vehicle for students to explore morals, ethics and identity; I am most happy when I feel I am teaching students core skills, as well as broadening their knowledge of our rich history or important current affairs.

Teaching Experience:

I am a graduate of the Teach First programme. Teach First is a charity that tackles educational disadvantage by placing graduates in schools which are in challenging circumstances. As a result of this, I had to learn how to plan and deliver lessons that were fun and engaging, as well as educational. Many of the students in my classes were behind because the school hadn't been able secure permanent staff, so I also had to learn how to accelerate their progress quickly, if they were to have any hope of reaching their true potential. I signed up to examine English Language at GCSE for AQA and this was certainly helpful, as I was able to give my students a big insight into the skills that were required and the mistakes that were often made. I have been an examiner for the last five years, so my knowledge and experience here would certainly benefit someone about to start in year 11. I am passionate about making English as a subject relevant and I am lucky that English provides a lot of opportunities for that; I can teach the core skills using texts from contexts that students will relate too, which really helps to build confidence and maintain engagement. I am currently teaching in a prep school in Sevenoaks because I wanted to see a different side of the education system.

Tutoring Approach:

I will always aim choose engaging texts for my tutees to work with because I want the sessions to be engaging as well has educational, especially if this is an extra session on top of all the lessons in school.

I think it is important to break down core skills like 'analysis' and 'evaluation', so that students actually understand what is required of them. Often, students are asked to 'explain' and analyse and their students have no idea what this actually means or how to do it. I have tried and tested resources, which will support my tutee and help them to do this.

I think it is important to encourage independence in any tutee, but we can't just expect it to happen, just because we have asked. I feel that modelling good outcomes and the writing process, as well as asking students to critique their own work and the work of others is key in helping students to be more independent. This is something I have achieved in a classroom setting and so, I am confident that I can help a tutee to do the same.

Nursery school teacher at Romanos English Nursery School in Nicosia, Cyprus. Amongst others, my responsibilities included:

Educational support for children in Preschool and Primary Education
Preparation and organization of weekly programming based on the different needs and abilities of the children of the preschool class. This programme was then sent to the parents to keep them informed on the weekly activities.
Application of multiple specific activities based on the nursery's timetable in the context of the programme issued by the Ministry of Education (e.g. silent activities as well as multiple subject activities such as language education, mathematics and natural sciences). Through these activities the learning and development of children is documented in different ways such as evaluation forms, contact book and progress meetings with the parents.
When needed, extra activities were carried out in smaller groups of children (micro-level).
Leading role in enhancing children's Greek language knowledge. Amongst others, created additional learning material to aid towards the Greek alphabet learning
Leading role in the creation of the School's Yearbook which included photos from all activities, school trips and experiences the children had.
Finally, over the last three years actively contributed to the structure and organization of the School's graduation ceremony by helping in poems writing and dance teaching.

Tutoring Approach:

Vasiliki follows a structured and well though teaching approach always tailored to the student's needs. She carefully monitors the student's progress and adjusts the teaching & homework given to help the student learn and develop his/her speaking and writing skills.
