| Personal Description: Since reading English Literature and Creative Writing at The University of Warwick, I have travelled the world, worked as a freelance tutor, published stories, exhibited artwork, edited two literary magazines, and won the Surrey Young Business Entrepreneur Award. I work on a part-time basis with Tales On Moon Lane, the Walker UK Independent Children's Bookshop of the Year 2008. |
Teaching Experience: I've been a freelance tutor since 2007. I specialize in coaching for essay-writing and exam technique, but have also been happy to teach a broad range of subjects outright, from A-level standard History, to introductory Physics and Primary School Maths. My aim has been to help the student quickly to assimiliate skills and materials necessary to pass the exams, but also over time to develop the kind of personal interests and creativity within the subject-matter that lead to confidence and even flair. |
Tutoring Approach: I'm a first class graduate from The University of Warwick who has maintained a post-academic habit of continual research into new fields. So, although I'm best qualified at the subjects listed, a wide range of interests and occupations has prepared me to teach almost any subject up to GCSE level. This has led me to embrace a more holistic approach to education wherein the development of a student's interests and strengths becomes just as important as troubleshooting their weak points. For me, tutoring is about using engaging, contemporary materials to bring a student's work to the highest standard whilst also acting as a mentor and interpreter of the adult world for the student themselves. |

| Personal Description: I'm a 22 year-old (male) musician, from Ireland. I'll be moving to York in October '09, where I hope to teach violin and music theory and listening. |
Teaching Experience: I have four years of teaching experience. I taught Violin (from grades 1-8) in McGinley's School of Music and Drama in Derry, where all of my student had 100% pass-rate. I also taught violin and general music theory in a primary school, where I put over 20 pupils in for examinations, and set up a number of children's ensembles. |
Tutoring Approach: I am very easy-going and patient, especially with those who practice! I take each pupil at an appropriate pace, and decide (with help of a discussion with the pupil and parents) what exactly should be taught. I focus a lot on technique, especially with beginners. For those who may have developed bad habits, I take time on alleviating those issues. I can take pupils through exam grades (from 1-8) but, if preferred, the pupil can have general tuition by which the repertoire learned is much more open. For music theory, the content taught is very open and the pupil/parent can decide what area they would like to focus on, but note that the focus should be on areas usually taught in schools up to A-Level. The same goes for any tuition dealing with 'music listening'. |
