Personal Description:
Hello there, this is Clair here, I`m 24 and am currently undertaking a chemical research PHD in the field of materials chemistry at UCL. I graduated from my undergraduate Chemistry degree at UCL and prior to this I lived in Portsmouth having moved there from Malaysia when I was 13. This coming September I am in line to be secretary of the Chemical and Physical Society, UCL's oldest society.

Aside from Chemistry I am also like running, taking photographs, going to see art, films, music and learning more about the world around me e.g. economics, politics and sociology.

Teaching Experience:

In recent years I have been in junior schools working with children during their science practicals. I have also had regular work tutoring one to one and small groups of KS3-GCSE students and have also been called in to help particular A-level/BTEC science classes. At university I mentor to undergraduate students.

Tutoring Approach:

During our tutoring session we'll do the normal thing of going through past papers but also work hard at actual understanding of the concepts. With me you will be able to understand and enjoy complex scientific and mathematical ideas and consequently get the grades you want and deserve. Hopefully we can work together to make this happen.

Personal Description:
I am an Arabic linguistics PhD student at the Language and Linguistic Science Department of the University of York, UK. I hold a BA in English literature and linguistics as well as an MA in translation studies. My study makes me familiar with written Arabic and spoken Arabic in its different forms (dialects). This is why I am quite familiar with Egyptian, Syrian, Lebanese, Gulf and Sudanese Arabic. In addition, I am also a CELTA-trained teacher and an Assistant Fellow of the Higher Education Academy in the UK.

Teaching Experience:

I have taught English as a foreign language for 10 years at Minia University, Egypt. I also taught Arabic to adults as well as young people for 5 years in England. I teach face to face and online.

Tutoring Approach:

My teaching depends on immersing you in enjoyable daily-life situations so that you can easily imitate and, after not too much effort, read, write and speak Arabic/English like a native speaker. Culture cannot be separated from language. So, I also immerse you in the main cultural aspects of Arabic/English-speaking countries in general and offer a brief background to language as reflected in culture. Also, I try to compare Arabic and English (as a language) and the culture represented by it with other languages, including French and German (languages that I am familiar with).

Personal Description:
I'm a graduate of University College London in Politics and Spanish, originally hailing from south-west London. Outside of university I'm broadly interested in the subject of education, having volunteered for two consecutive summers on an education project in south-west Uganda. I've got a strong academic record, winning the prize for the top graduating student across all courses in the Arts & Humanities faculty at University College London in 2015. My specific credentials for the subjects taught are below:

Maths: A* grade in A-level Maths, with an average of 99% across the 6 modules

Politics: First class grade in every module taken at UCL.

History: A* at GCSE and A-level. Full marks in History A2 exams.

Spanish: A* at GCSE and A-level. First class grade in all Spanish modules taken, language and literature, at UCL. Lived in Madrid for 9 months, and have spent 6 months travelling and volunteering in South America.

Teaching Experience:

- Tutored LSE Politics undergraduate in quantitative methods and essay planning from September 2015 to January 2016
- Tutored a year five student Mathematics from January to June 2015, references available
- Tutored Mathematics at Common Entrance level in my final year of school in 2011
- Ran one-on-one conversation English conversation classes in Madrid in 2014
- Mentored a group of ten first-year undergraduates in my second year of university in 2012
- Mentored a GCSE-level student as part of an IntoUniversity scheme in Lambeth in my first year of university in 2011

Tutoring Approach:

For school level: I have a friendly and informal style, based on building up a good relationship with the pupil, as this is the real advantage of the one-on-one set-up. Classes are structured, but I adapt things based on the situation and diverge from the lesson plan if necessary. I also work extensively with past and mock papers because I think practice is the best way to learn. Finally when I take on a pupil I am committed - if the pupil has problems or needs help between lessons I'm happy to be contacted via email.

For university level: I take an ad hoc approach depending on the student - I also like to keep things fun and informal. Particularly in essay subjects, I emphasise the need for a clear argument and structure, attributes highly valued at UK universities.

Personal Description:
I am Pharmacist. I have masters in Pharmaceutical sciences from the University of Sunderland. I have taught primary school students to University students as a private tutor. I am able to make learning real to the individual by explaining the concept of different topics in a way that is practical and understandable. This method of teaching makes it easier for the student to remember more.

Teaching Experience:

I have taught various age groups. Primary, GCSE and A-Levels. (Edexcel/OCR/AQA)

Tutoring Approach:

I have learnt over the years that students learn in different ways. I try to identify how best the student likes and learn best and apply it accordingly. However I have achieved success the most by making the student understand the rational behind the solution for any challenge.

Personal Description:
I am a happy person because I love my job. I am really interested in teaching languages, using various approaches and methods as well as learning them, in particular self-learning.

Teaching Experience:

I have been working in a Language Centre for over ten years, teaching English and Russian languages at all levels. I am experienced in working with a wide range of programmes such as survival language, exam preparation, etc. and gave a great amount of individually tailored lessons as well.
I also designed and successfully taught a course on English-Russian Translation for students from British universities.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe in order to be effective the learning process should be interesting and engaging, if possible even entertaining, but never tedious. So I try to bring in variety into my lessons and build language learning around the topics which appeal to my student.
I love working with technology and teaching in Skype using various Internet tools and resources. However, I prefer not to overwhelm my students with them and keep the focus on the language learning.

Personal Description:
I have recently completed my BA in Classics and English at Oriel College Oxford, and hope to continue post graduate study in the future. Academically, my main interests are in the history of Ancient Greek, and the Germanic languages like Old English and Old Norse and in Medieval manuscripts. I have also particularly enjoyed studying epic poetry.
Outside of my academic interests, I like hiking, cycling, Zumba and cross stitching.
I am especially interested in widening access to higher education in Britain, and encouraging those from so-called non-traditional backgrounds to make applications to prestigious universities.

Teaching Experience:

I have over 70 hours of teaching experience at KS1 and KS2 level as an Academic Support Volunteer with the charity IntoUniversity. I attend weekly after school sessions aimed at pupils aged 7-11, facilitating their work on personal homework or maths and literacy tasks. I work with small groups and one-to-one, with children of all abilities from a diverse range of backgrounds.
I have around six hours experience teaching beginners level Ancient Greek to a class of teenage students at the East End Classics Summer School. I planned my own lessons and created my own teaching resources. In two previous years I also worked at the summer school as an academic mentor, running informal discussion sessions for the young people involved.

Tutoring Approach:

I am happy to devise my own programs of study to match a tutee's particular needs or to follow school syllabuses. I have personal experience of doing the Gothic and Tragedy papers for A Level English literature but am familiar with all the A Level texts through my work as an undergraduate. I let the student talk through their ideas out loud and when discussing literature challenge the student to think of new angles on a question and to argue against themselves. I also like to see a consolidation of what has been discussed more formally, either within or after the session if this is appropriate- a translation, mind map, essay plan or full written work. I would ideally begin a tutorial by asking some questions to establish progress on a particular topic, and from these questions establishing areas for focus. My sessions end with a consolidation of what has been covered and also a challenge to apply what has been covered in a new way, to ensure that the concept, not just its specific application has been understood.

In language learning I put a lot of store by memorising paradigms and vocabulary, and in literary study, I think having repeated immersion in the text studied is vital. This means targeted close reading of particular moments or chapters, and repeated rereading of the whole. An intimate knowledge of a text allows me to think on my feet and respond to questions on new and unexpected topics.

Personal Description:
Being at the age where I'm young enough to still bond with the students on a more social level, whilst also having years of experience to be professional and engaging, is a rare and useful combination of traits for me as a Tutor. I began tutoring for a couple of years at Sixth Form and found I really enjoyed bonding with the students and building a constructive learning environment, and since then have gone on to do an undergraduate degree and one year of teaching.

Otherwise, my life at the moment is combining travel with work and studying. I studied in Copenhagen for 1 year on the ERASMUS program, just returned from teaching at a university in Beijing for one year, will teach in Spain for a few months before doing a Master's program in 4 different countries (Germany, Argentina, India, South Africa).

I'm undecided as to whether I want to go into teaching and lecturing, or instead Diplomacy and International Politics. So, for now, i'm gaining experience and qualifications, learning languages, and seeing the world whilst it's easy to.

Teaching Experience:

Short Form:

- 2 years tutoring whilst at Sixth form in Wilson's Grammar School
- 1 year in Beijing teaching English and Western Philosophy at Beijing International Studies University, including IELTS
- Alongside teaching in Beijing, numerous tutoring roles, from 7-year-olds to the Sports Director of the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics Committee

Tutoring Approach:

Largely influenced by Stephen Krashen's ideas on the Affective Filter when learning. Essentially the barrier that we sometimes put up in our minds when learning then prevents lots of information actually going in, due to a combination of emotional and motivational factors. The child is worried or scared, dislikes their teacher or learning environment, thinks that they're terrible at the subject so don't see the point, and so on. So I feel the biggest determining factor in how well the lessons go is based on initially bonding with the student and encouraging them in a safe and sometimes fun learning environment.

What we do in the lessons will largely depend on the subject, but for example with entrance exams, we would largely drill through old past papers, find areas of confusion of weakness, then spend a lesson talking through how you tackle those particular questions and building up their understanding of what's required. Taking a page from the Michel Thomas method of learning: Don't rush anything - to remember is just to have properly understood, and once you've achieved that you can move on without needing to come back to it.

Homework and Workbooks recommended but at their Guardians discretion.
