Personal Description:
I studied Classics at King's College, Cambridge, graduating in 2009. I then trained as a teacher at Queens' College, Cambridge, graduating with a PGCE in 2010. I have been a private tutor since 2009, and have now clocked up thousands of hours' tutoring experience. In addition to my school-age students, I supervise Cambridge University undergraduates in Latin and Ancient Greek. I tutor both languages to degree-level standard in London, Cambridge and on Skype. I love Classics, and my main aim is to make my lessons fun and inspirational.

Teaching Experience:

I have been tutoring Latin and Ancient Greek intensively for the past 7 years, with thousands of hours' teaching experience to date. I have taught towards all major public exams in both languages, such as Common Entrance, GCSE, AS, A2, SAT, Pre-U and even BA (i.e. University exams). I am familiar with the entrance processes for a number of independent and grammar schools, and have had a lot of experience teaching towards scholarship papers. I have tutored many students applying to Cambridge and Oxford, and can provide in-depth advice and support with choosing the right course and college, as well as getting to the necessary level for the language tests. I have also taught the languages to those who have decided to learn them purely for fun! In addition to my face-to-face teaching, I have taught extensively on Skype, and have built up an array of handy techniques to get the most from the online format. I was Head of Latin at a school in Bury St Edmunds for two years (September 2011 to July 2013). Since October 2010, I have been supervising Cambridge undergraduates in Latin and Ancient Greek (colleges so far have included Pembroke, Downing, Homerton, Queens', King's, Murray Edwards, Newnham, Caius, Peterhouse, St John's, Emmanuel and Trinity). I also own and run a private tuition agency, which I set up in 2011, managing a team of eight staff members and over 800 inspirational tutors.

Tutoring Approach:

My teaching style is structured and thorough. I start every lesson with a five minute recap of the key content of the previous session, checking how much the tutee remembers. A typical lesson will then consist of a translation, in which I ask the tutee to note down each unknown word as it is encountered and to devise a memory trick which will help them to recall the word in a five minute test at the end of the lesson. Together with the tutee, I will then pick a grammar point which stood out in the translation exercise as requiring the most immediate attention. We will spend five to ten minutes working on that, with the tutee's understanding tested with some reinforcement exercises. At the end of the lesson we will recap all the new vocabulary and grammar which was covered, and I will typically set a manageable 20 - 30 minute homework for the next session based on what was covered in the lesson. Every lesson is of course different, and tailored to the tutee's requirements, but I find this approach works in the vast majority of cases. I consider grammar to be crucially important, but treat it as a means to an end and always emphasise the ways in which it can be usefully applied to translation rather than learned in isolation. I believe that any tutee can excel in Latin and Greek with a little guidance and a decent amount of independent work. Above all, I strive to make my lessons fun and enjoyable. I love my subject and want all of my tutees to love it too.

Personal Description:
I am a friendly and approachable tutor with a huge amount of enthusiasm in the subjects I teach. I was awarded a Scholarship to a competitive independent before working towards a Masters in Biochemistry at Oxford University.

I have since worked as a Pharmaceuticals Business Analyst, as a High Yield Chemicals Industry Analyst in Investment Banking and as an Air Traffic Controller. In each case the knowledge and skills from my education have been critical. I would now like to gain the satisfaction of helping others do well in these subjects and attain their potential.

Teaching Experience:

In my industries it is critical to continue learning and passing exams, and in every role, I have always had to pass on my knowledge and understanding to others, which has been incredibly gratifying. More recently, I have enjoyed tutoring maths and other subjects to pupils locally, often to help them gain entrance to competitive schools. I also enjoy spending time teaching my son and my nieces.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe that learning should always be interesting to the pupil - inspirational even - and that the onus is on the teacher to make this the case. Learning is about being curious and asking questions; in fact I believe pupils should not be scared to ask any question, which means that learning should feel relaxed rather than formal.

Subjects should not be seen as complex but rather layers of straight forward principals that build on what the pupil already knows in an intuitive fashion. In this way, a good teacher allows understanding to grow naturally and not feel like a challenge.

Personal Description:
I am passionate about all things English. With 16 years experience of preparing children for SATs, 11+ and 13+ Common Entrance and Common Scholarship, I am perfectly positioned to help your child achieve the very best results. I am also experienced in helping children through entrance exams to such prestigious schools as Kings, Marlborough, Winchester, Stowe and Eton. I have an in depth knowledge of child development and use this experience to guide even the most reluctant or struggling child through the various aspects of English grammar and literature. I have worked closely with learning support departments in order to support and extend those children with difficulties such as dyslexia. I am an experienced SATs marker and so have an good knowledge of what your child needs to know for this exam.

I also tutor for primary maths. I have always found working one to one, means I can identify your child's areas of weakness and we can work together to ensure they have appropriate strategies to ensure success in the future. I use both online games and pen and paper exercises to ensure your child is interested and having fun whilst learning.

I have also worked with adults, helping them improve their level of written language, specifically working on producing letters of application, handwriting and up to date c.vs.

Teaching Experience:

I have been teaching for 16 years and am Head of English at a large, well respected private school. I teach in both Key stage 2 and key stage 3. For the last 7 years I have also worked as a personal tutor to children from age 7 - 15, helping them achieve their potential. I have had huge success with these children, helping them to secure places in the schools of their choice.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe in working together with children and giving them confidence to expand their experience in both writing and using English. I think that all writing needs to be relevant and interesting to the student to encourage them to want to improve. I use past papers, when appropriate, to ensure that children gain a secure knowledge of what to expect in upcoming exams as well as many other resources to extent your child.

Personal Description:
I am a PhD student, undertaking my doctorate in Environmental Sciences, with a focus on soil nutrient cycling and nutrient transport to surface and ground waters. I completed my BSc in Physical Geography at the University of Exeter and gained first class honours in this.

Teaching Experience:

I carried out teacher training at a basic level with the University of Exeter in order to participate in the Students Associates Scheme. After this training I spent three weeks in a local secondary school where I actively participated in Geography and Religious Studies lessons, and was able to provide work plans for higher and lower achieving students. I also worked closely with students that had special educational needs.
I also have experience in teaching sports to groups of young children.

Tutoring Approach:

During my time at the secondary school I found that I produced good results working one-to-one with students, particularly with students that were struggling to understand concepts or were having difficulty with the teaching style being used in the classroom. I am patient, focussed and willing to work hard to enable a tutee to achieve their goals.

Personal Description:
I am a graduate in Mathematical Economics from the University of Birmingham and a Chartered Management Accountant. I worked in finance for about twenty years and have been a governor in primary and secondary schools for many years before deciding to enter the teaching profession. I have been on the GTP training course for Secondary Mathematics at London South Bank University. I am the Instructor of the Kumon Study Centre in Eltham and do one-to-one tutoring in mathematics.

Teaching Experience:

I have 30 students on the Kumon maths programme at my study centre in Eltham. I individually tutor maths students from key stage 2 at primary school right through to A level. I also tutor statistics at GCSE, AS and A2 level. References are available on request.

Tutoring Approach:

There are many reasons why parents decide to appoint a tutor for their child. I will discuss your requirements in detail with you to ensure your child's tuition is tailored to them. Some pupils find the transfer from primary to secondary schooling problematic. I can explain the underlying mathematical concepts and to show them how to tackle questions so that they can get into the higher maths set for Key Stage 3 and GCSE. For older pupils I will build their confidence by presenting topics in a variety of ways and improving their exam techniques.
If one hour is too long for your child, I can arrange 30 or 45 minute slots. I will travel up to 5 miles from Sidcup.

Personal Description:
SAXOPHONE-I am an experienced saxophonist. Currently I play both alto and baritone saxophone. I have taught young pupils at my old school before for free, but now that i have gained enough experience, not just as a teacher but at a very high level in bands too, I am starting to tutor. I teach many different styles, have it be jazz, pop or classical. I offer tuition for students of all ages. Whether you are young and just starting out or older and wish to try something new/different for fun and want some guidance in the right direction, I am here to help. I teach for those at a amateur and beginner level. Music is a great passion of mine and I really enjoy teaching others something so great.

MATHS- I am a higher level maths student and i have an A grade at GCSE level maths. During my free periods i spend time helping lower school student who are struggling with their maths for free because i really enjoy teaching. I teach everything from key stage 1,2 and 3 maths to foundation GCSE students. Maths has always been a great ability of mine and I mainly teach it because I have a love for it and in my experience those who i have taught have found me very helpful.

Teaching Experience:

SAXOPHONE- I have taught young pupils at my old school before for free to gain some experience in teaching. I also play at a high level in the Hillingdon Music Service concert band and Sax Group, as well as in multiple Jazz and Big Bands.I have been on tour to France with the Music Service as well and have played for weddings too. I now have a good level of experience in both playing and teaching.

MATHS- I have been teaching GCSE and lower level maths for a few years now. I was part of a team who a few years ago went to the UK maths challenge representing my region of London. I enjoy teaching maths and in my experience those who i have taught have found me very useful.

Tutoring Approach:

I find that bringing out the passion in the student is what counts, so for music the genre they enjoy most and helping them fall in love with music that way. With maths i believe having a strategic plan of getting a topic or part of maths that the student is struggling with and keeping at it and doing questions and going through the solutions with them until they understand. I understand that many people struggle with maths or may not like it but i find that someone younger (such as myself) teaching them makes it a lot easier on them. Another good way i find with maths is going through questions and helping them understand how to get to the answer rather than just giving the answer and moving on with a simple tick or cross.

Personal Description:
I am a qualified teacher, examiner and postgraduate researcher working in Cheshire. I have been teaching for six years and tutoring for slightly longer. I enjoy being able to diagnose the issues students have with their studies and then working with them to help solve these problems. Every student is a unique individual with different needs and so I normally like to meet initially to go over an exam paper and discuss strengths and areas for improvement. From there we build an individual learning plan with short achievable targets to gradually build a measurable path of success through the study sessions.

My main work with tutoring has involved me working with students from the Kings and Queen's school in Chester and I am very familiar with how those schools operate and the specialist demand on those students. In the past, I have lived in the South East and worked with students from Wellington College also.

Teaching Experience:

6 years in Comprehensive School.
8 Years as a Personal Tutor
5 years as an examiner for AQA and Edexcel

Tutoring Approach:

Personalised learning for all students. I like to use previous assessment data and discussions with the pupil to ability and confidence in Science. I always find that pupils who begin to improve their ability in Science with me, inevitably increase their enjoyment of the subject substantially. In addition, help with Science study can address and improve weak areas in other subjects through improvement of literacy and numeracy skills.

Please note, there are many unqualified or retired teachers who are not updated with the various changes in demands and marking criteria for the GCSE exams. As an in-practice teacher, I attend various CPD and examiner training events which mean I am tutoring for the most up to date examinations and skills required.

Personal Description:
I am primarily an animal portrait artist who works on a commission basis but I also enjoy painting other subject matter. My favourite medium is pastels as I love the soft effects that can be achieved, especially when dealing with fur. I work privately from my studio facility, which is part of an artist's network in central Hadleigh as well as teaching in people's homes and I also deliver workshops to art groups around Essex.

I exhibit locally and have had work accepted at the Mall Gallery in London. My latest commission was to produce a mural in conjunction with a local primary school. I also have several years experience of working with children in all age groups.

Teaching Experience:

I have been teaching one-to-one sessions over the last three years from beginners to intermediate and teaching in groups within a workshop session. I have experience of teaching both children and adults in a wide range of mediums, with the ability to differentiate the work if needed.

Tutoring Approach:

My approach to teaching is very supportive and encouraging. I like to put people at their ease, with friendly surroundings, so that they can savour the lesson and gain experience. My goal is to teach my students techniques in both drawing and understanding colour so they can ultimately develop their own style. There is the opportunity to try a range of mediums and learn the skills associated with each.

Personal Description:
I am an enthusiastic, professional, patient and successful private tutor. I have a BA in History (1st Class) and a Masters in Medieval Studies (Distinction); a course jointly run by the History and English departments at Royal Holloway, University of London.

Aside from Higher Education I have 10 GCSE's A-C (including English Language (A), English Literature (A), History (B), Latin, Science and Maths). I obtained 4 A Levels in English Language, History, Psychology and General Studies as well as an AS Level in Law.

Teaching Experience:

I have a strong amount of teaching and tutoring experience - across a range of levels in both English and History:

- KS2 English
- KS3 English
- ALAN
- GCSE English Language and Literature
- As/A Level English Language, Literature and History
- Higher Education History and Academic Writing

Fortunately these have been very successful, and I have been consistently able to improve client results. Over time I have seen that the areas I am able to impact most are essay writing and exam techniques.

I also work full-time in the recruitment field and, as a result, have been able to offer help with University Personal Statements, College Applications and CV and Interview techniques, should this be required.

Previous feedback:

From Michelle (5/5): (GCSE English) "Fantastic Teacher, she is everything you could ask of an English tutor. We are so glad we found her."

From Vivien (5/5): (A-Level History) "My daughter is receiving excellent help and guidance from Rachel with both English and History AS work."

From Samantha (5/5): (GCSE English) "First Tutors helped us to find Rachel , she has helped our daughter with her English and given her alot more confidence. Rachel is very easy to talk to and get along with putting students at easy. I can't thank Rachel enough, for her help and support."

From Lynn (5/5): (A-Level History) "Rachel has been an excellent tutor for my daughter Harriet and has helped her to gain confidence and understanding in her English and History A Level course. We have been very pleased with the attention to detail and enthusiasm that Rachel gives to the subject in a relaxed and personable manner. I would highly recommend Rachel as a Tutor."

From Adam (5/5): (GCSE English) "We cant recommend Rachel strongly enough. When we first sought her help, our son was coasting through school, under-performing in English and showing no interest in changing it. With her help just once a week, he is now up to a B average - an of course this has a positive effect on so many other subjects where good English skills are required (history, RE etc). If only she covered the maths & sciences too!"

From Libby (5/5): (GCSE English) "Rachel is a very good tutor, working with my son at his speed. She has given him ideas to look at and explore in his English GCSE. I am hopeful that through her help Sam will do well this year. Sam engages with her too which is really important."

From Carol (5/5): (Secondary English) "David felt very relaxed and comfortable during his lessons with Rachel. She had put a lot of thought into them and fully addressed the problems he is having at school. After 6 lessons he already feels more confident in presenting his work in the way it is required by the school. He left each lesson feeling very positive. He will be continuing his lessons with Rachel."

From Clare (5/5): (Secondary English) "We have been extremely pleased with Rachel's tutoring. Rachel has understood Bronti's needs and taught her the correct level of English. Rachel makes the lessons interesting, whilst also challenging in a way that isn't obvious to Bronti."

From Sue (5/5): (A-Level English) "Dear Rachel, Thank you very much for all the help you have given Alex so far with her AS studies, in particular English and essay writing. She is becoming much more confident and positive about approaching homework tasks and felt she coped well with her first exam today due to the preparation sessions with you over the Xmas holidays. Compared to when she started I would say she is much happier now about her English studies, which is great. I am delighted with the change in her motivation and she is very keen to continue working with you on improving her essay writing techniques. Once again many thanks"

Tutoring Approach:

I practice what I preach - and I believe that this comes across in my tutoring. I absolutely love learning and studying. I am an enthusiastic person who genuinely wants to help people achieve their potential in their desired field and take great pride in the successes my clients have achieved after sessions with me.

Sessions are relaxed and informal; I create a friendly environment where people want to learn and feel comfortable doing so. I try to be as flexible as possible; I am happy to ramp up the sessions in the run up to exams, but also to scale back during quieter periods and also change days/times on an ad hoc basis. I encourage my tutees to contact me outside of sessions if they ever need any help - you don't have to wait a whole week to speak to me again!

There is, however, a formal element to learning and I do expect commitment and homework will be set on a regular basis (as long as there is capacity alongside school/college/university commitments).

It's not a case of 'one size fits all' and I enjoy working with my clients to help them to understand their best style of learning and to adapt my teaching style as required. Sessions with me can often mean going through past papers and helping with homework to fun quizzes and games!

On the whole, my aim would be not only to teach, but to inspire my tutees and instill a sense of confidence in their own abilities.

Personal Description:
Being a PE teacher, my health and fitness is very much paramount in my life. I support a number of sporting teams and play touch rugby on Saturdays. I spent 14 years playing rugby and this is one of many passions of mine. I snowboard and play golf on a recreational level as well.

Teaching is also an important part of my life and its the enjoyment of helping people to understand information that motivates me the most in this profession. My current position, teaching maths and careers, allows me to influence students not only in the classroom but also provide support in regards to the decisions they make outside of their regular education.

Continuous learning and education is a personal commitment I make as I often enrolling in professional development courses to assist in my ongoing evolution as a teacher.

Teaching Experience:

Although I am qualified in PE, my teaching experiences, particularly in the UK, have been varied. The main two subjects I have focussed on are PE and Maths. I have covered PE up to A Level and experienced the BTEC programme as well. I currently teach Maths to Key Stage 3 (years 7& 8) and 4 (years 9 & 10) students, but you can include Key Stage 2 also (Years 3 and 4), based on my primary teaching experiences. Psychology is a passion of mine and despite limited teaching of this subject, I make up for that with my knowledge and experiences of learning this material at a tertiary level.

Tutoring Approach:

My approach to tutoring is similar to how I approach teaching in a classroom. I feel that students learn best when you make the material most relevant to them. Students need to know how the information they are learning can be applied to the outside world.

Also using analogies most applicable to the student helps in explaining complex concepts. I am lucky in the subjects I teach as they are highly applicable to life inside and outside of a classroom (i.e Maths, Careers, PE and Psychology).

Personal Description:
I have been playing guitar from the age of 14, firstly teaching myself and then learning from teachers such as Gypie Mayo (Dr Feelgood). I formed my first band at 15 and have been teaching, playing and song-writing in bands ever since, playing in venues such as Ronnie Scott's, Dingwalls, The Marquee, Chinnery's, 100 club, playing alongside artists such as Finley Quaye, Boy George and the Brand New Heavies. My band Sentivo was on Long Lost Brother Records (Jamiroquai, SIA) making recordings for producers such as Mickey Most, Joey Negro and Mark Knight. I studied Music/Guitar Theory at a college in London where I gained my Music Diploma. I am now currently teaching guitar part time at a college in Southend and teaching private and one to one guitar lessons whilst playing, singing and writing music & lyrics for my new band

Teaching Experience:

I am an experienced and qualified Guitar tutor having achieved a Diploma in Music/Music Technology and have also completed a level 4 PTLLS teaching qualification. I am currently working at a college as a Guitar Tutor which I thoroughly enjoy and has given me great teaching experience and teacher training especially in teaching in groups and also one to one. In the last 17 years I have been tutoring and teaching privately which has given me great confidence and experience in teaching on a one to one basis. I also hold a current DBS certificate. I teach a number of different styles ranging from blues, rock'n'roll to rock, funk, jazz and soul Please give me a call or email to book a lesson whether you are an absolute beginner or want to improve or build on the level you already are.

Tutoring Approach:

I like to keep teaching relaxed and fun and like to get the student up and playing straight away, especially if you're a beginner as it's important to come away with something gained to boost the confidence and enthusiasm so you feel like you have achieved something solid and want to carry on playing. If you're already playing then I like to build on your skills and strengths and also focus on any weak areas to make you the best player you can possibly be. It is your lesson so you choose what you want to learn whether it is chords/progressions, melodies, scales/modes or songs or maybe tools to improve your own compositions and song writing. I can teach from my home and have a dedicated music room which is specially set up in a relaxed and musical environment to inspire the creative musician.
