Personal Description:
I am a contemporary artist making visual art for exhibition, publication and screening. I make work in painting, photography and film and I also write and make books. My work often takes me to lots of interesting places around the country and abroad where I facilitate training in art and creativity with a range of community groups. I have been working as an artist in schools since 1997 particularly with primary school aged children. When I am not doing all of this i like to go to the theatre, galleries, travel and cook. I'm part of a local ladies football team who i train with every week and I commute by bicycle whenever I can as keeping fit and active is an important part of my lifestyle.

Teaching Experience:

I began teaching/facilitating as a training advisor in 2001 within a community arts project and adopted a participant-centred approach which was effective in working with participants who were partly or permanently excluded from school or/and living within the foster care system, or unemployed with no or little qualifications. My role was to facilitate the development of individualised project briefs and themes with participants based upon both their strengths and interests and build a programme of workshops to facilitate both creative and Key Skills development. Participants would be encouraged to work independently, individually and in groups in response to self-created briefs to produce a portfolio of creative work. I liaised with outside agencies within education, social services, and industry sectors to actively re-introduce and establish participants who had produced a body of work into full/part time education, work experience or/and relevant employment. The process of facilitation and consultation was quite challenging due to issues and barriers to learning and expression participants displayed and I developed an open, flexible and responsive attitude. Continual monitoring, informal and formal assessment strengthened the reflection and evaluation of participants engagement and progress which in turn led to further developments in implementing differentiated provision.
This experience laid the foundations for a teaching style that was inclusive in nature and was further developed throughout the following years (2002-) of artistic practice that saw me facilitate skills in visual art production with a range of community groups. The combined experiences as a training advisor and as an artist/facilitator have merged into what I consider to be a teaching style that flourished with my role as lecturer on the photography degree at a local college. Working within an institution of further and higher education as a lecturer was a stark contrast to what I had engaged in before and required me to teach within established schemes of work and modes of delivery. I adapted myself to this successfully maintaining a creative and individualised approach to teaching within a framework. The following academic year in 2007 I was given the responsibility of devising the scheme of work and mode of delivery for the critical and theoretical studies module on the photography degree, which was to be co-delivered with a new member of staff.

Tutoring Approach:

Throughout employment as a lecturer and training advisor my approach and teaching style took into consideration each student's individual circumstances, their interests, needs, abilities, and learning styles, adapting the teaching content and style to ensure student engagement. I am also aware of what is needed to effectively strike a balance between individual student aspirations and abilities against collective requirements stipulated by a curriculum. I've worked with students from both vocational and academic backgrounds, with disaffected and culturally diverse youth age groups, with students who have alternative and changing lifestyles, mental health and physical conditions, and do so by adapting style and content to structure and scaffold their journey through the course offering the relevant support and pastoral care.

Tutoring Approach:

As a personal tutor I help learners to unlock their full potential. The environment of a large classroom often hinders results and limits development. I find that different approaches and environments improve results and increase enthusiasm to learn and the ability to work independently.
I aim to tailor tuition for the individual learner. At the intial session we agree a plan of action based on the learner's needs. We continue to review this plan as needs change. The tuition is intended to support study at school or college or individual study (eg distance learning courses). Sessions are informal but focussed and enjoyable. I set homework if required but prefer to concentrate on understanding and practice within the session.

Personal Description:
My name is Chris and I specialise in preparing students for both the 11+ entrance exams and A-level chemistry exams. Until January 2011, I was a Science Teacher at Plymstock School in Plymouth where I had been the Head of Chemistry for 10 years. Previously I had worked at Kelly College Independent School as a Chemistry Teacher and the Head of Lower School Science. Since January 2011, I have been self employed as both a Professional Tutor and also a Professional Drummer! I love both aspects of my self-employment and look forward to helping many more students achieve exam success.

Teaching Experience:

Chris has been teaching and tutoring A-level chemistry since 1994 and as an ex-Head of Chemistry who has worked in both state schools and private schools, he has helped countless students achieve the high grades they often need for university entrance. Many of my ex-students have gone on to vet school, medical school and Ox-bridge.

Chris has also been teaching Key Stage 3 since 1994 and has a good understanding of the level of written work and mathmatical ability expected of the most able Year 7 students when they begin Secondary School. He has helped countless students to achieve their potential throughout Key Stages 3, 4 and 5 and earlier in his career he was employed as Head of Lower School Science at Kelly College Independent School in Tavistock, Devon.

Chris has a boy and a girl who have both been through the 11+ process and so is well aware of the stresses and benefits that all families are likely to experience, if they are to apply to a selective school.

Chris has an up to date fully enhanced CRB check and also public liability insurance.
You can also find him on the internet listed with various other agencies.

Grammar school education is really rewarding for able students and I hope to get the
chance to show you what the schools are looking for.

Tutoring Approach:

CHEMISTRY
I use boardworks PowerPoints to aid understanding but try to focus the learning around past paper questions and answers as much as possible.
I have handwritten answers to AQA, OCR-A and OCR-Salters past papers which are scanned in to the computer for projection onto a smart board.
28 is the 1:1 rate but evening sessions are likely to be small tutorials of a maximum of 4 students in the same year following the same course at a cost of 24 per student.

ELEVEN PLUS
For 11+, I teach collaboratively with my neighbour Becky, also listed on UK Tutors. We jointly teach small groups with class sizes limited to a maximum of ten students. Students in a small group support each other and work together with a shared purpose and confidence.
Weekly 60 minute sessions at 17.50, run from September until the end of February. These are followed by 75 minute sessions at 20 which run from March to the September exams. Payment is monthly in advance, preferably by bank transfer.

Becky is a knowledgeable Primary School teacher with experience across the primary age range. She has a particular interest in enabling children to reach their full potential, using interesting teaching strategies and by recognising various learning styles. She obtained her BEd Honours degree in Primary Teaching as a mature student and not only achieved a first class degree, but completed each of her placements as an 'Outstanding' teacher. Becky has a fully enhanced CRB and is trained in the Safeguarding of Children. She has also ensured that she has kept up to date through continued professional development.
Becky is married with two daughters who have both passed the 11 plus exams.

Personal Description:
After obtaining my Master degree in St. Petersburg Academy (Russia, 2000) Ph.D. in fine art through Sorbonne (Paris, 2008), I moved to the UK and have been teaching part time with the Russian Art School in Oxford and Russian School in London. I specialise in Russian language, graphic design and textile art.

Teaching Experience:

I have tutored private students and taught classes of adolescent and pre-adolescent children through the Russian School in London as described above. Previously I have also taught Fine art in the St Petersburg Art School in Russia.

Tutoring Approach:

My approach to tutoring is holistic - I believe art is an expression of personal experience, and as such teaching technique is a means to an end rather than an end in itself. As an expression of a person's experience of life, art is also about beauty, and sharing the way that is perceived.

Personal Description:
I am sixty-six years of age and have retired after working as a Maths teacher since 1973. I was head of a Maths faculty in a large secondary school for over twenty years. I have a wide experience of preparing students for Mathematics examinations at all levels and have been an examiner throughout my career, working at different times for Edexcel, AQA, OCR, CIE and the IB.

Last summer, I was marking Further Pure 1, Statistics and Mechanics A-level modules as well as the IB HL Mathematics and Statistics module.

Teaching Experience:

I have taught at secondary schools in Wolverhampton, Kidderminster and Walsall. Since retiring from full-time employment, I have worked part-time at an A-level college and as a Maths consultant assisting GCSE students in Walsall in their attempts to achieve the all important grade C pass. I currently help a number of private tutees in either a one-to-one situation or in small groups.

Tutoring Approach:

Generally, I would say my approach to tutoring is traditional. The exact program of study depends on the needs of the tutee and can vary from a structured programme of study over a number of months to cramming for examinations which might just be a short course of two or three lessons.

I have a proven record of success and can provide testimonials if required.

Areas covered: Dudley, Wolverhampton, Kidderminster and Sandwell

CRB certificate available for inspection.

Personal Description:
I graduated from the University of Edinburgh four years ago, having obtained a degree (2:1) in English Literature and Spanish (with distinction in spoken Spanish).

I have been learning Spanish for over 10 years, and lived in Spain for a year as part of my degree, where I gained fluency in the language, and was awarded a distinction for my level of spoken Spanish on returning to Edinburgh and completing my degree. I am also passionate about English - both literature and language. I am currently working for a successful music/fashion magazine in London as section editor and have strong editorial and writing skills.

More recently I acquired a Diploma in Journalism (Gold Standard) from News Associates in Wimbledon - including Media Law, News Reporting, Court Reporting, Production, and Shorthand (100 WPM).

Teaching Experience:

I currently tutor a wide range of pupils, from the ages of five to eighteen, as well as adults in a number of subjects - English as a foreign language, Spanish and English literature. I have also taught Maths in the past and am familiar with a range of topics.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe that the most important thing about tuition is that everyone learns in different way, and as a result I like to adapt my methods of teaching to the individual and tailor my lessons to their specific needs.

I aim to be a fun, engaging tutor and to use a variety of techniques and resources to make the most of the time spent tutoring.

Personal Description:
I graduated from Worcester College, Oxford, where I got a Double First in Classics, doing a mixture of literature, history and especially focusing on philosophy. I am now studying at City Law School for the Bar Professional Training Course and will become a pupil barrister in September 2016.

I am enthusiastic and hard-working and I strongly believe in putting all my effort into what I do, so as a tutor I would work hard to try and help bring real improvement.

I was captain of one of my college football teams and also love playing cricket (though perhaps more keen than talented in both of the above!) I was Co-Chair of the Oxford University Labour Club and an elected official at the Student Union, and I also enjoy playing the piano and guitar.

Teaching Experience:

I have tutored a number of people via UK tutors in several subjects. My most significant recent achievement is improving a student from an F grade at Latin GCSE to a C (the highest grade possible at Foundation Tier) in just three months. I have also been a voluntary leader on summer camp, which included organizing detailed discussion sessions, and I tutored my sister for her successful Cambridge Philosophy application.

Tutoring Approach:

I would try and keep things as relaxed and informal as possible so the sessions are good fun and try to listen as well as talk so that we can focus on what needs to be worked on and tailor the sessions to individual needs. I think students often underperform not through lack of intelligence but lack of engagement and I would try and find a way to help them enjoy the classes and boost their self-esteem. I love all the subjects I tutor and I'd hope to inject that into my classes!

Personal Description:
Hello. My name is Carol and I'm a transplanted American. I've lived in the UK for over 10 years and I absolutely love it. My daughter Grace lives in Edinburgh with her husband and wee baby boy. And my son Elijah is 24 and lives here in London, studying fashion at Royal College of Art.

I love to cook and entertain friends. I go to the cinema a lot with my son or with friends and I try to get to the theatre at least four or five times a year. I cycle everywhere, and making things look homely and inviting brings me great joy. I read a great variety of things and watch fascinating documentaries. And if I could, I'd travel the world continuously to soak in all the amazing cultures and languages and traditions of the world.

I currently tutor English to students from a variety of countries and language backgrounds.

Teaching Experience:

I homeschooled both my children for fourteen years total. If success is measured by the outcome, my children are proof of my tutoring ability. Grace went on to graduate from University of Edinburgh with a 4 year degree in English Literature and History. Elijah graduated from Northampton University with a First in Fashion Design and is now a graduate student at Royal College of Arts. I tutored every subject to them, and also taught group tutoring sessions in Geography, Earth Science and History.
When my children went on higher education, I retrained as a TESOL teacher, the highest level to teach English as a Foreign Language. I've worked in English schools here in London and taught to the FCE exam as well as privately tutoring English to businessmen and woman from around the world.
I've been teaching now for 22 years, mostly tutoring one-on-one.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe that everyone has the capacity to learn anything if it's taught to their learning style and consciousness. None of us sees things the same way....and none of us can absorb things by the same method as another person. It's crucial to understand a person's 'grid', or the way they learn. That only comes from observed feedback: that's when someone who is learning something new digests it and then gives it back in some way (an essay, a written assignment, or a verbal recounting) to show understanding. I call that 'the lightbulb moment'.

I also think that being relaxed and having fun while learning is so important. Good humour is a key to learning. When we are enjoying the company and the environment, our sensors are up and our receptors are open! It's a refreshing and invigorating experience, not a draining one.

The relationship between the tutor and student needs to be safe. It should feel like a safe place to make mistakes or to say, 'I don't understand.' Or to feel very, very excited about understanding something for the first time without being made to feel like 'it's about time.'

I believe in academic success, measured by passing tests, but not limited by them.

Personal Description:
I am a mature professional with broad portfolio career in engineering, information technology, education and commerce. A qualified Mathematics Teacher (PGCE) with over 10 years working in schools with pupils and students aged 10 through 18. My teaching career led me into the use of information technology in schools, and later into a career in IT management and the Civil Service. One of my specialist skills is programming financial trading systems. Married with 4 children and 6 grandchildren. Keen walker, especially when accompanied by our eager Jack Russell.

Teaching Experience:

My main experience has been in secondary education, teaching GCSE and A Level. However I spent a year teaching at primary level, preparing pupils for 11+ and Common Entrance. I have recently done some tutoring for GCSE. During my time in education I published a guide to help explain the basics of GCSE maths.

Tutoring Approach:

My approach is traditional, with plenty of practice on the basics to build confidence and then gradually increasing the tempo to cover the more testing parts of the exam syllabus. I understand why some find it hard to understand the more abstract concepts and have a knack of explaining how best to overcome these barriers.
