Personal Description:
Hi! My name's Ed. I read Classics at Cambridge before going on to train at the Bristol Old Vic. I'm now working as a professional actor in London.

I tutor in English, and all areas of Latin and Ancient Greek. If it's of interest, I particularly specialized in my finals papers on Homer, Virgil, Horace, and the evolution of tragedy.

Though I read Classics, a large chunk of my finals actually ended up being part of the English course - specifically tracing the origins of tragedy through to the present day. As an actor, too, I'm continually having to familiarize myself with new areas of literature, be it poetry, drama, or prose, with the advantage, I hope, of an extremely practical approach.

Teaching Experience:

Overall, I've found it best to keep a balance between tutoring English and Classics. I like to be teaching a range of things.

When moving to Bristol I was lucky enough to be offered a part-time teaching post with the Classics department at Clifton College. Over the two years I primarily taught A level language work in Greek and Latin, as well as coaching their prospective candidates for Oxford and Cambridge.

I've also done a lot of free-lancing in all sorts of areas for both English and Classics, tutoring Oxbridge applicants as well as students at both school and university level.

The work I've done with my tutees has varied widely. In Latin and Greek, I've assisted some specifically in translating set texts both at school and university level (I'm now very familiar with the OCR Latin syllabus); I've introduced others, who wished to explore beyond their prescribed syllabus, to new areas of literature; and with others I've worked on more wide-ranging ways to deepen literary analysis or approach translation.

I should probably add that my language work with school students has almost exclusively involved tackling the inadequacies of the confounded Cambridge Latin Course! This seems to be taught in virtually every school but seemingly never elects to teach grammar, which I find utterly bizarre. If you're a victim of this clueless course I'm more than happy to help!

In terms of English tuition, I've been fortunate enough to have a similarly broad range of tutees, at GCSE, A level, and university standard, though a high proportion have been Oxbridge candidates.

Some references from previous tutees below:

Naomi, A Level Latin and Greek (2013)

Ed,

Sorry it's so early but I just thought I'd let you know I got my Cambridge grades! Thank you so much for everything once again!

Neirin, Latin GCSE (2013)

Hello Ed. We are so delighted with Neirin's results, absolutely fabulous. And who would have thought - an A star in Latin! Thank you for all your effort and encouragement. He couldn't have done it without you. Enjoy the rest of the summer and good luck with the writing.

Katie, Oxbridge Ancient Greek (2013)

Ed's work with Katie has been completely outstanding. I think we were asking for something quite demanding, a combination of literature and language, with inspiration to boot, and he delivered it superbly. Katie was super-enthused by his approach. I think they both thoroughly enjoyed the classes (indeed from the sound of it I would have enjoyed them myself!) Ed has a combination of intellect, passion and (as far as I can judge) a real feel for the texts!

Zac, Scholarship Latin (2014)

Ed has been tutoring our 11 year old for Latin scholarship papers. In 5 sessions he has taken him to a new level and has totally inspired him! We can't recommend him highly enough!...

Thank you very much for all your help, couldn't have got the A without your tutoring.

Hope all goes well for you at theatre school and you're enjoying the summer.

Best wishes,

Tutoring Approach:

I think it's impossible to pin down a sure-fire method of effective tutoring for any given person. People are different, and different methods work with different people.

That said, I am a firm believer that you cannot simply speak at someone. Learning has to be an active process, and I think there has to be involvement from both sides for things to sink in. In this light, I do try to make things enjoyable, and also to limit shortcuts; I'm of the view that it's far better to invest the time in getting firmly to grips with a subject, be it an instance of grammar or literary concept. In the long run that is a shortcut in itself.

Personal Description:
Highly motivated physics Tutor.
Teaching experience accumulated by preparing more than 40 students for A-Level exams.

Teaching Experience:

My name is Anton. I have master`s degree in Physics from University of New Hampshire. Besides my background as researcher I have four years of experience as a London based tutor. I primary teach A-level physics and most of my students were taking OCR, AQA, or Edexcel exams. I occasionally teach GCSE and University level subjects, such as Mechanics, Electrodynamics, and Quantum Mechanics. Currently I teach part-time in a private school.

Tutoring Approach:

My approach to teaching is flexible. Usually I easy detect weak spots in students understanding and this gives me chance to focus on the most relevant topics for a particular student. I carefully prepare myself for each session, and my goal is to make the student involved in the lesson not just leaving him to listen to me. In my opinion the Math involved in A-Level physics is not hard at all, and many students that are good in Math think they can handle physics relatively easy, but this is most of the time not true. I apply extra effort, in my lessons to make sure that student understands the physics concepts not just memorizing facts. My observation is that if the student goal is to achieve an A grade it requires at least two hours of tutoring per week throughout the academic year, of course sometimes one hour is Okay, and some ambitious student ask for more than two hours per week. In any case it will give me great pleasure to help you improve your knowledge and make you feel the beauty of PHYSICS.

If you have any questions please let me know.
Good luck,
Anton

Personal Description:
I am a professional actor with a first-class English degree (University of York). Over my years of private tutoring experience I have learnt that the two most important attributes for a tutor are a) a passion for your subject, and b) an ability to get on and connect with your tutees.
I have always loved English literature and language (my love for the latter having recently been stoked by taking a CELTA qualification) and combine a real passion for these subjects with a performer's ability to relay that passion.

Teaching Experience:

Several years of private tutoring experience.

8 hours of CELTA teaching practice.

I taught IB English (standard and higher levels) for five months at the United World College of Southern Africa (Swaziland).

Tutoring Approach:

Tutoring allows me to exercise my twin passions: arts subjects and acting. I believe there is an aspect of performance in teaching; I can communicate my enthusiasm, and make learning both interesting and exciting.

Testimonials

I am currently studying A level French and I am very pleased to be able to say that my French has improved more than I ever thought it would since starting tuition with Michel. In just over one month, I have improved by two whole grades, which has been evident from mock exam results in class at school. I thoroughly enjoy my lessons with Michel because I do not feel embarrassed to ask seemingly simple questions, which I feel I cannot ask in my class at school.
E. H. - Bromley

My daughter who is doing A level French was really struggling before we found Michel. He has really motivated her and has made lessons more interesting . She has 2 hour lessons but she is surprised how quick the time goes. I would highly recommend Michel. I can see he gets pleasure helping his pupils make progress. My daughter`s accent has also greatly improved with Michel`s help.
Mrs G - Croydon

I`ve just received my results and I`m very happy to tell you that I got an A for my French I-GCSE. Thank you for all your help because it really made a difference! - G - Bromley

Hi Michel,
Thank you for your help. I got A* in my French oral! - C. Sevenoaks School

I just wanted to say thank you so much for all the sessions, they really helped me get a high grade for speaking and an overall A. Thank you so much - S - Orpington

I have enjoyed Michel`s teaching immensely. I would very much recommend Michel to other students- he`s really quite adaptable and has used some creative approaches to teaching which was really helpful for me.

My name is Karan, I am a 22 year old medical student entering my fifth year of med school. Teaching is an important part of my future profession and so I have been tutoring since the age of 17. Alongside med school I am also a keen rugby player and play for my University Ruby team.

Teaching Experience:

I have tutored Mathematics, Biology and Chemistry at a GCSE and an A-level standard for three years. During my time as an A-level student I studied six A-levels at once (double the standard amount) and so understand the effort required to achieve a high grade.

Tutoring Approach:

I do not mind taking a relaxed approach to tuition so long as the student is reaching their objectives for the lesson set. If a student is failing to achieve what they are capable of than I feel it is my duty as a tutor to push them that much harder.

In order to be an A-star student, you need an A-star understanding of your subject. To gain such an understanding consistency and discpline in how you approach your work is required. I, as a tutor, aim to give my students these prerequisites for success.

Personal Description:
I am an LSE graduate in BSc Accounting and Finance and have also obtained postgraduate qualifications in Statistics, I am currently a dedicated and passionate full-time tutor, I am passionate about my subjects and dedicated to seeing students do well.

I was privileged enough to be afforded a very good private education and originally decided to take on tutoring as an opportunity to share my knowledge with others and allow them to realise their full potential and all the other benefits of a good education.

Five main factors have contributed to my success so far namely,
- I have high expectations of myself and my students, I believe every student can achieve the best grades with the right help

- I instil confidence and a "can do" attitude in students, regularly reminding them that nothing is "hard" if you have been shown how to do it properly

- I listen to students, this keeps lessons interactive and ensures I have constants update on their thought process and current understanding

- I am relatively young so students feel comfortable engaging with me and enjoy learning from me

- I ensure continuous support for students, I make myself available for questions via phone or e-mail throughout the day to ensure the support does not end at the end of the lesson!

Teaching Experience:

I have been a private tutor for over 5 years in this time my reliability and skill has enabled me to develop a good reputation which has allowed me to have a consistent base of 15 - 20 students on a weekly basis.

I have tutored university students attending Russell group universities such as Queen Mary and Warwick and have taught GCSEs and A-levels across all major exam boards including AQA, Edexcel, OCR and iGCSE. Additionally I have had students admitted to prestigious private schools such as Eltham College and Bromley High after excelling in their 11+ exams.

Career Highlights!

- Academic Year 2011 - 2012 I helped a student who was predicted a C grade at GCSE to achieve a coveted place at Eltham College after passing a difficult 16+ exam, we then continued to work together to secure an A grade at GCSE

- Academic year 2012 - 2013 I helped a student who scored a D grade at AS Economics achieve an A grade at A2 level after 8 months of tuition. He was the only student to score an A grade in his school since 2007.

- Academic Year 2013 - 2014 I helped a student who scored a C grade at AS Economics achieve an A grade at A2 Economics with an impressive 97% in Unit 1, 99% in Unit 2 and 100% in Unit 3. He had also had three previous tutors who he was dissatisfied with before coming to me.

- Academic Year 2015 - 2016 I help a student who had achieved a B in AS Economics go on to achieve an A* in A2 Economics with a 95% average across the unit 3 and 4 exams.

Tutoring Approach:

My teaching approach embodies a long term approach to learning I teach students in a way which will allow them to be successful in higher education as well as their more short term exams. I also try to make students more confident in their abilities overall not just the material I teach.

I strongly believe that a solid understanding of basic principles is the foundation to success in academic study. I concentrate a lot of time and energy on instilling these basic principles in students.

I am also a strong believer in understanding over 'rope learning' I ensure that pupils understand what they are doing and why they are doing it, never encouraging them to simply regurgitate what they have seen previously.

I also encourage practical understanding of concepts frequently referencing real world examples and using objects to illustrate theory as I recognise that theory on its own given no relevance is harder to remember. Supplementary to this I also relate teaching material to potential job roles and tasks which I have knowledge of (mostly Banking or Business related) in order communicate usefulness to students and keep things interesting.

Finally I believe teaching successfully is ultimately about listening to your students I constantly encourage students to question things and express anything they don't understand or are not too sure of. If a student looks unsure or hesitant about something I will ask open questions or get them to explain concepts to me in order to fully grasp their understanding. This also helps build their confidence and ability to express themselves accurately.

Personal Description:
Learning Practical Turkish and English!
Hi Everybody,
I am qualified, a dedicated and experienced teacher of English and I am a native Turkish speaker with 4 years experience of teaching English as well as Turkish. I have taught to different age groups both in Turkey and in the UK including children and adults. Teaching is a strong vocation for me and I love the buzz I get when I feel I have inspired my students. I live in Cheltenham and I am happy to provide language services in Gloucestershire area.

Teaching Experience:

I have got 4 years of Teaching experience both individually and group sessions. I have had individuals from different countries willing to learn Turkish including engineers and pilots and Turkish students who wanted to learn English for either academic purposes or for daily life.

Tutoring Approach:

Tutoring Approach:
My approach is to be friendly, supportive and professional when interacting with students. I encourage them to be proactive and resourceful in their approach to English/Turkish, guiding them through the processes of learning and problem-solving. Sessions are therefore individually tailored and flexible to meet the needs of the student, so are student-focused rather than traditionally teacher-led. I spend time getting to know my students and, whenever possible, encourage the practice of English/Turkish skills within topic areas of personal interest to them. I am a good listener and can empathise with my students, helping them to see areas for improvement in their work and offering practical advice and tips on how to develop it further. Ultimately, I aim to help my students fulfil their academic potential whilst also developing the range of skills needed to achieve their aspirations in life.

Looking forward to meeting you!

Personal Description:
I am a qualified science teacher and mum of two young boys. I graduated in 2001 from Heriot Watt University with a physics degree and have been teaching since 2003.

Teaching Experience:

I recently moved back to Scotland from the South of England where I had taught Physics and Biology to GCSE level for the last 12 years. I also taught Chemistry and Geography to S1 and S2 equivalent (plus a bit of Chemistry to GCSE).
I have also done some tutoring both in England and here in Fife.

Tutoring Approach:

Working with the student to find out where they need help I will explain concepts that they find difficult using diagrams and examples and will ask the students to complete questions on that topic. I will also link topics and concepts together and ensure the basics are understood before moving onto more complex ideas.
