Personal Description:
Professional teacher for over 30 years specialising in adult education and teenagers.

I have taught at all levels, including at Universities, around the world and am happy to travel where necessary.

Teaching Experience:

I have taught for over 20 years around the world teaching IT and related subjects for companies such as Learning Tree, Peritas and IBM. I was one of the first qualified network engineers in the UK.

In 2006 I took and passed the Cambridge University CELTA course and exams and now teach English as a foreign language either one to one or to small groups ranging in age from 14 to adult both in the UK and in schools across Europe.

Business related courses include presentation skills and the art of public speaking; gender dysfunctionality courses and IT services courses (operating systems, networking, technologies, A+ etc)

Tutoring Approach:

With English the aim is to provide a personal conversation led approach to learning supported by written exercises to confirm the rules. Depending on the numbers involved the approach is practical and involves music, role playing, presentations, reading and writing skills. All training is geared to the needs of the individual and there is no set approach.

Language teaching can be more effective in groups and the cost for 2-4 students is 25 per hour. Please ask about larger group sizes.

All teaching can be for groups of up to 16. Costs will depend on numbers and location. Please ask for a quote. All rates exclude traveling costs and teaching materials.

Personal Description:
Hello! I'm Nicole. I'm a bit of a history and literature geek (and I hope to convert you!!)

I studied History and English at the University of Oxford (Wadham College). I graduated with Double First Class Honours in 2010, and came top in my academic year: no mean feat!

I believe that my excellent grades reflect several important characteristics: my exceptional academic ability, my high academic standards, my mastery of study-skills, and my dedicated and conscientious work ethic. I look to encourage all of these qualities in my students.

More importantly though, my outstanding results are a result of my absolute love for, knowledge of, and commitment to, my subjects. I absolutely love to learn, and aim to help my students to find a similar excitement and passion for their studies!

Teaching Experience:

Over the past few years, I have privately tutored a number of students. My students have come from a diverse age range - spanning from the very young to the much older - and I feel comfortable working with children, teenagers and adults.

I have tutored students in History; English Literature; English Language; reading comprehension; speaking, listening, reading and writing skills; primary level Maths.

I have also tutored 11+ applicants, for which I have a 100% success rate.

I also have experience in mentoring potential Oxbridge applicants, and advising university peers and younger students on study and revision skills.

After graduating, I worked full-time as a Cover Supervisor in a secondary school. That means that I took classes in all subjects across the secondary curriculum, for students ranging from 11 - 16 years of age, and I also supported teaching in A-Level English classes. Seeing up to 150 students in a day was a challenging and rewarding experience in which I was constantly thinking on my feet, and successfully applying my teaching skills to brand new material (in familiar and unfamiliar subjects). This job also gave me the opportunity to observe and work with students of all abilities and learning styles, and to learn how to adapt my teaching style accordingly.

I have worked on a number of projects which involved education, support, or leadership of young people. These have included:

- Working with and supervising over 120 foreign children and teenagers whilst employed by a Cambridge-based language summer school as a programme coordinator and social leader.

- Peer support leader within the APAUSE programme ('Added Power and Understanding in Sex Education') which offered sex education and empowerment lessons for younger teenagers.

- Co-director role in secondary level production of 'Les Miserables' with responsibility for over 100 children and teenagers aged between 11 and 18.

- Co-director role in community theatre production of 'West Side Story' with responsibility for working with approximately 50 children and teenagers.

- Assistant role for GCSE-level 'Speaking and Listening Days' which involved aiding teachers in helping students improve the quality of their English language GCSE assessed work.

Tutoring Approach:

I am passionate about learning - and look to encourage a similar excitement in my students. In History this might be through some particularly fascinating or gruesome details, or in English, through exploring a beautiful line of poetry.

I am very individual-student orientated, so I seek always to establish each individual's aims for tutoring, and then we will work together toward these. For one student, this might be to know how to deconstruct a poem; for another, how to write a good essay.

With some students, I will plan structured lessons, whereas others prefer simply to earmark time with a dedicated tutor, before deciding what to do themselves at the time. Perhaps they will bring their homework, a study-book, or something they are stuck with - whatever the case, I aim always to listen and respond to the needs of each individual student.

With all my students (but especially the younger ones) I am a big believer in making learning FUN! I therefore often design lessons which use a variety of practical learning activities to keep them stimulated, rather than just relying on book-learning. In the past, I've mummified a teddy, conducted a press conference, and taught times-tables via Grandmother's footsteps! I find this to be particularly effective for students who struggle with concentration.

I believe that when offered education through the right methods, everyone is able to maximise their own ability to learn. Having completed a full-time degree and worked in secondary education, I am equipped with plenty of different learning methods. With my students, I therefore look to discover which approaches work well for them, and then to use these to help them master the subject material. This in turn helps students to gain in confidence and self-motivation as they discover their own capacity to learn well.

If students are working toward exams, I first seek to establish what a student feels his or her weaknesses are, and then focus tuition on areas or skills which will help them to plug the gaps or grow in strength and confidence. If more general support is needed, I will combine working with core material with a focus on ensuring that they have a solid grasp of the assessment objectives, question-types, and what the exam will look like, so that they can go into the exam confident and well-prepared. I also find that practice, practice, practice is essential, so we'll often work with past papers.

I seek always to establish clear lesson goals, and to review material learnt several times within each lesson, ensuring that the student feels comfortable with using the material learnt, rather than swamped by facts and lists!

Personal Description:
Of my 50 A-Level Law students 25% attained an A*and 35% attained an A grade last year. I have extensive experience delivering the year 7 to 9 math curriculum to both children and adults. I hold a Law degree, a PGCE, a teaching qualification for the delivery of Maths, a Masters degree in Education and am currently studying for a PhD in the Sociology of Education. Very friendly and able to identify the individual learning needs of my students.

Teaching Experience:

During my five years of employment in colleges, I have taught AS/A2 Law and Sociology to students aged 16 - 19 and legal elements of Level 3 BTEC Nationals in Applied Forensic Science. Students have consistently attained grades that rival private sector provision. Of my 23 A2 students that left in May 2014, 25% attained an A*and 35% attained an A grade. All but one learner attained a minimum of a C grade and no learner failed their course of study. This degree of outcome has been replicated with my current cohort of students, 50% of which attained an A grade at AS. These learners achieved significantly higher grades than predictions that were based on their performance in other A-Level choices and prior GCSE assessments. Attendance and retention rates of my learners are outstanding and the vast majority of learners continue into the second year. In my role I hope to improve the prospects of students who desire places at university. Further to this I have tutored Law and Sociology at undergraduate level, ensuring students attain 2.1 outcomes.

I utilise direct questioning at a suitable level for the individual learner and adopt appropriate teaching methods for the learning of more complex legal and sociological concepts.

My specialist areas of interest are international law, European un ion law, human rights, discrimination policy, religious freedoms/speech, reform and sociology.

Tutoring Approach:

I have received three consecutive `excellent` reports on my practice in the classroom.

I deliver lessons that are prepared with up to date knowledge of developments in the law and case studies often contain a Welsh dimension. Hand-outs and PowerPoint resources will always accompany lessons.

Prefer to keep things informal and friendly. Prefer to deliver in 2-3 hour teaching blocks.

Personal Description:
My name is Becky and I am an experienced Primary School Teacher. I specialise in preparing students for both the 11+ entrance exams, helping children prepare for SAT's, and also give booster sessions for children who need extra support at any age during their primary years. I have experience working across the age range and am a confident, knowledgeable practitioner. I aim to provide individually tailored lessons that will help your child achieve their very best potential.

Teaching Experience:

I qualified as a teacher with a 'first' class honours degree in Primary Education (BEd) as a mature student. I have since then been a subject coordinator for Gifted and Talented children, Art and Children in Care. I have taken every opportunity to keep myself up to date and enhance my subject knowledge of the Primary Curriculum, with regular and current training. I have two children who have both been successful in gaining places at Grammar Schools by taking and passing the 11+. I look forward to helping many more students achieve the same exam success.

Tutoring Approach:

For 11+ tutoring

I teach collaboratively with Chris, who is also listed on UK Tutors. We teach in a purpose built classroom, with access to an interactive whiteboard and other teaching tools. We jointly teach small groups with class sizes limited to a maximum of ten students. Students in a small group support each other and work together with a shared purpose and confidence. Having both an experienced Primary teacher, and an experienced Secondary teacher, will give your child a unique and highly effective session.

Chris is a knowledgeable Secondary School Teacher who specialised in Chemistry. He has had a successful career in both Independent Schools and Mainstream and was Head of Chemistry at Plymstock School for 10 years. He has now built on his success and become a, much sought after, self employed Professional Tutor. He not only is an academic tutor, but also is a Professional Drummer and offers drumming lessons in his purpose built studio. Chris has a fully enhanced CRB.

Weekly 60 minute sessions at 20, run from September until the end December. These are followed by 75 minute sessions, at 22.50 which run from January to the September exams. Payment is monthly in advance, preferably by bank transfer.

For SATs preparation and Booster sessions

I work with either small groups of children within the same year group, or with individual students. i can help your child with any aspect of the Primary Curriculum and also help guide and support you to help your child achieve their best. I am highly competent and trained in helping children with special educational needs.

Weekly 60 minute sessions in a group cost 20.00. Payment is monthly in advance, preferably by bank transfer.

Personal Description:
I'm a professional musician living and working in and around Caernarfon.

Teaching Experience:

I have taught for more than 5 years, both piano and guitar to a wide range of students.

Tutoring Approach:

I aim to give students not only the technical ability to play music but also the understanding of what they're playing through moderate and relevant music theory. In my experience this brings a higher appreciation of music and even if you're not to become a professional musician you will still highly benefit from my lessons not only by learning a specific instrument but also through broadening your musical culture.

Personal Description:
I'm 49 years old and I've worked with children and young people in various settings since I was a teenager myself. This includes youth camps/expeditions for children from deprived backgrounds and musical evenings in half-way houses for young people with emotional problems. I've also worked full-time for 17 years with children with learning difficulties, Autism, and challenging behaviour in both special schools and in a community outreach role.

I have recently graduated with first class honours in Geoscience, and I'm very interested in science in general, ever keen to learn more about the world/universe from a rational perspective. I love to travel, combining meeting people from different backgrounds and cultures, along with new environments, different animals and different rocks! I also love music and to play the piano, guitar and ukulele.

I am positive, calm, patient, adaptable and responsive to individual needs and enjoy supporting people to overcome their challenges.

Teaching Experience:

In addition to my youth work experience, I lived in Seville for nearly 3 years, teaching English as a foreign language, mainly to young adults in a language school and in 1:1 private tutoring. Within my experience in special schools I have taught pupils on a one to one basis and taken small groups.

Tutoring Approach:

In my experience both as a teacher and from my varied learning experiences, self-esteem and confidence is the most important basis for successful learning, combined with actually enjoying the experience. I endeavour to enhance both. I adapt my approach and strategies to meet the needs of each individual.

Recent publication:

Teaching Experience:

I taught MA students philosophy of science at the University of Lancaster and, from 2004 to 2012, I taught at the United Arab Emirates University, specialising in the philosophy of mind and the philosophy of science, winning a prize for educational videos and podcasts. I have also designed entrance exams for USA medical colleges, covering critical thinking and logic.

Tutoring Approach:

My approcah to teaching is best summed up as student-problem-based learning, in which the student attempts to solve problems that they have identified as of stimulating interest to themselves and relevant to their intended qualifications. I believe that all learning starts with the student's own first rudimentary explorations of an issue. I act as a conversational and critical guide through this journey, providing reading material, questions, and formal techniques of citation.

My YouTube channel, currently with 38,000 view, is available for my students to consult.

Typically, a student will select an issue/question in philosophy, we will discuss it one-to-one, and then the student will produce a short essay on the issue, which we will critically discuss in the following session.

I am also available for one-on-one study days (consisting of 6 hours each) for 160.

highlighting what the students want from their sessions and ensuring those topics are addressed and covered well

finishing the syllabus well in advance with the view of revisiting topics that students would like to go over again because they didn't understand it the first time around

Personal Description:
I am a First Class Psychology and Sociology graduate from the University of Cambridge (2012-2015).

Teaching Experience:

I undertook a 6 month teaching placement in Port Elizabeth, South Africa at a mixed secondary school in 2012. Here I taught students from ages 12-19 in both English Language & Literature, and Life Orientation.

Since leaving university I have run numerous study technique sessions with students of all ages. In addition, I regularly tutor various students at both A-Level and GCSE in a variety of essay based subjects.

I have also run workshops and seminars at secondary schools, colleges, and universities to teach students how to study more effectively through mastering their mindset.

Tutoring Approach:

I specialise in study skills and techniques after undergoing a dramatic transformation in how I approached studying myself during my third year of university. After two years of being a low-mid 2i student at Cambridge I changed my entire approach to study through developing a number of study tips/tricks/hacks rooted in the science of Positive Psychology.

Students who often need tutoring are not those lacking in intelligence. For many not reaching their true potential it is their mindset and approach to learning that lets them down.

This is where I come in- I share my story of how in my third year I actually started working fewer hours, stopped getting stressed out, and completely changed my relationship with learning and education.

My tutoring is just as much about coaching- the last thing a student wants is another educator telling them what to do. I simply provide them with the tools to make dramatic changes and challenge them to apply these techniques themselves.

Areas I specialise in include:
- Fostering Positive Study Habits
- Eliminating Distractions & Increasing Focus
- Stress Reduction & Redirection
- Mastering Time Management
- Conscious Note Taking
- Perfecting Exam Technique
