Personal Description:
I am a former Head of English and Assistant Headteacher in a local secondary school and have a very strong record of raising pupils' attainment. I have worked with all year groups, 7-13 (age 11-18), and have experience working with pupils with special needs, as well as having done lots of work on stretching more able students. English is my passion and it's one I am enthusiastic to share with others. I graduated from Oxford University in 2005 and am currently Senior Examiner at GCSE for one of the major exam boards, so I know what they really want to see! I am also a 'subject expert' in English at Ofqual. I now oversee the training and work of up to 80 examiners so have very significant experience in this area.

Teaching Experience:

I qualified as a teacher in 2006, having taken my PGCE at Homerton College in Cambridge. Since then I have worked full time at a local school teaching English, although I have now returned to full time study so have better availability for tutoring. I have marked both GCSE English Language and English Literature for OCR and AQA and CIE, and also mark A Level. I am aware my price point is higher than others, but this reflects the years of teaching and direct examining experience which I will bring to your sessions; I believe I am very well placed to help students achieve their potential.

Tutoring Approach:

In consultation with student and parents/carers, we would put together a programme which would be tailored to meet the needs to of the student. I always try to create a relaxed atmosphere, and encourage humour!

Personal Description:
I have just returned from a year as a Graduate music tutor at Wanganui Collegiate School, New Zealand. Before this, I graduated from the University of Oxford in June 2010, having studied Music at Oriel College under the tutorship of Dr. David Maw. I was educated as a music scholar at Eton College, Windsor before moving to the Perse School, Cambridge for sixth form study. Aside of a huge passion and enthusiasm for music study and tuition, I am an avid sportsman having represented both my university and county youth level in cricket. I also played a number of sports for my college during my time at Oriel. Currently, I am studying for a Masters in Musicology at Durham University with a specialism in the orchestral music of Gerald Finzi. In addition, I am also the Senior Organ Scholar at St. John's College. I have recently accepted a teaching post at Brighton College to begin in September 2012.

Teaching Experience:

Having just returned from a year as a graduate music tutor at Wanganui Collegiate School in New Zealand, I feel that I am in touch with both school teaching and more specifically, more private music tuition. During my year experience in New Zealand, I engaged very actively in the life of the music department. I have experience of basic music tuition with teaching of introductory concepts in the subject such as basic notation, theory, instrumentation and historical issues.
Further up the age spectrum, I have taught specific a level modules in a seminar type situation. With a completed Undergraduate Music degree from the University of Oxford, I have an extensive knowledge of theory, analysis, music history and specific tutoring skills in the study of the clarinet, piano and bassoon. I have taught music theory, clarinet and piano privately for 4 years.
This said, I am very happy to tutor at all levels, aiming to pass on my keen enthusiasm in the subject onto other keen and ambitious musicians whether they be starting out in the subject, or looking for extra assistance at A level and/or degree level. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me at any time.

Tutoring Approach:

My tutoring style is designed to generate as much active involvement by the student as possible. Tutoring time is balanced according to the needs of the client between examination coaching (handwriting, mnemonic techniques, time/mark allocation discipline, revision styles) and subject content (probing and consolidating background knowledge, instilling enthusiasm, analysing key aspects of each topic).

In addition, I believe in addressing the needs of each child individually and working with them to help them understand how to work through a problem for themselves. Confidence is often the key and I am keen to work with them to improve the confidence in their own abilities in a varied and fun atmosphere.

Personal Description:
My name is Marco, during the past twelve years, I have taught the Italian language in England and abroad.
My professional experience has regarded various subjects, among which:
- pedagogic investigation about the foreign language teaching;
- foreign language teaching coordination;
- writing of didactic syllabi and curricula;
- assessment principles and criteria;
- organization of workshops, conferences, public lectures and roundtables with teachers, heads of schools, deans of universities to enhance the presence of the Italian language teaching in Guatemala among schools and private and State funded Universities;
- implementations in the MFL Italian language syllabus in order to improve the didactic offer;
- organisation of training courses for the CELI exam of the Universitą per Stranieri di Perugia;
- training of English students to take the GCSE and A-Level in Italian;
- creation of strategic networks among various educational partners both locally and internationally for the provision of scholarships for students and teachers in need;

I am graduate in Foreign Languages and Literatures from the University Ca' Foscari of Venice and I possess the ITALS Master's Degree in Teaching and promotion of the Italian language and culture to foreigners.

At December 2007 I graduated with success from the ITALS M. A. Degree in Teaching and Promotion of Italian Language and Culture of the University Ca' Foscari of Venice. The topic of my dissertation was linked to how organize an MFL interactive teaching unit in a class composed of students with different abilities.
At the end of May 2008 I published Mosaico Italia, a book on Italian Language and Culture that can be used with students with an Intermediate level of Italian (level B1 of the Common European Reference for Languages). This book aims to provide a didactic instrument to investigateItalian reality.

I added to my knowledge gained 'in the field' by taking the Master's Degree in Education at Birkbeck, University of London, graduating in November 2011 with Distinction. Success on this program entailed my being able to integrate effectively concrete work experience with theoretical knowledge in such a way that I deepened my analytical skills, overall.

Teaching Experience:

My professional experience has regarded various subjects, among which:

- foreign language teaching coordination;

- organisation of training courses for the CELI exam of the Universitą per Stranieri di Perugia;
- training of English students to take the GCSE and A-Level in Italian;

Tutoring Approach:

think I am able to enhance the skills of low performing students by individualizing teaching methods and processes. My teaching style focuses very much on the outcomes my students wish to achieve by improving their Italian, be they grammatical, written or conversational. I am dedicated to helping my students learn and improve their Italian in an atmosphere that encourages interaction, listening, feedback and empathy. Above all, I like to make the process of learning Italian a fun experience that enriches my students' personal and professional lives through a sense of achievement.
The teaching techniques, which could be useful in a Foreign Language Tuition, are those in which communication between the tutor and the student is always is promoted. In this regard, mutual interaction and collaboration lead to a more natural learning of the language. This process follows a teaching method where the humanist-affective approach is used to practice the basic and integrated linguistic abilities while learning a foreign language.

Personal Description:
Born in Edinburgh, I was raised in India and then Africa, before returning to the UK. Having lived in London and South East England since then, our family moved to the Scottish Highlands in 2012, primarily to raise our children in a less chaotic and more natural environment. We've had no regrets at all...and our various dogs and cats are similarly happy with the move!

I have always been passionate about English, from the weekly spelling tests and grammar exercises of primary school to the privilege of being taught at A Level by Tolkien's grandson. His vibrant, interactive approach shaped my ongoing learning and fired my imagination. After leaving Edinburgh University with a Masters in English Language and Literature, I went on to take a TEFL qualification and used this when travelling abroad in Turkey and throughout the Caribbean. I am delighted that I continue to work in the area of EAL with overseas students in British schools, and that technology has allowed me to work with individuals in their home countries, via Skype.

My love of English directed my career, working first at the Royal Shakespeare Company before becoming an independent theatre producer in London, and a theatre advertising executive on accounts such as Andrew Lloyd Webber's 'Cats' and Cameron Mackintosh's 'Les Miserables'.

In 2008, my partner and I began the home education of our two children at primary stage. It was both challenging and inspirational and the experiences and knowledge I gained during those years - not purely academic, but also the different ways and methods of learning, the different developmental stages of children, the different learning styles of children - continue to inform my present day tutoring.

While home educating, and with my love of theatre, I founded an educational theatre group, Active Arts, with Margo Gunn, a teacher and director at Shakespeare's Globe Theatre in London. We worked with a wide age range of home educated and mainstream school children, providing workshops on various Shakespeare plays including 'Midsummer Night's Dream', 'The Tempest' and 'Romeo & Juliet'. Workshops were also designed specifically in support of GCSE/IGCSE work. As passionate advocates of Shakespeare, our approach was active and energetic, lifting Shakespeare off the page and introducing his plays, his language and his theatricality in an engaging and tangible manner. I was thrilled to be able to resurrect this work in the Highlands, initially at a local primary school, conducting 4 workshops for Primary 4-Primary 7, resulting in workshop presentations of 'The Tempest' and 'Macbeth'.

Teaching Experience:

In addition to home educating my two children and running Active Arts, my personal and professional lives led me into private tutoring and I have been a private tutor in English Language and Literature since 2009, working alongside children and young people from age 5 upwards, whether on general literacy issues, EAL or focusing specifically on exam work, from SATS, Nationals and GCSEs, through to A Levels, Highers and beyond. Tutees have been those in mainstream state schools, leading UK private schools and home education, following the English and Scottish curriculums, as well as IGCSEs with providers including Cambridge, OOL and Edexcel.

A number of my tutees have challenges such as Autism, ADHD, Tourette's and dyslexia, and the combination of experience, research and support courses have built my knowledge and understanding in these areas.

While I am registered with tutoring agencies, many of my tutees come via personal recommendation and I was delighted that tutees I had worked with in England chose to continue working with me via Skype after our move to Scotland.

Critically, I am PVG checked, and would be happy to provide evidence of this, together with references and qualification documentation.

Tutoring Approach:

MAKING ENGLISH ACCESSIBLE
My approach is not one of 'dip in and out' for an hour, or 'one size fits all', but of creating a relaxed, enjoyable, constructive atmosphere and building a relationship within which the young person's potential can be maximised, against a tailored, individual approach. While texts and challenges might be shared by various tutees, learning styles, atmospheres for learning, methods for learning, will always be different.
As importantly, my approach places great value on the parents, their involvement and their right and need for clear, ongoing and comprehensive communication. As such, I am often in regular contact with both my tutees and their parents, should they require it, outside of tutorials.

"The mind is not a vessel to be filled, but a fire to be ignited."
Plutarch

If you're looking for a desk-based tutor, one who does all the talking and expects your child to just sit and listen, I am not the right person for you.

If you're looking for someone to ignite a love of English, to build confidence, to be energetic, to make learning enjoyable, active, off the page, accessible, then, here I am!

MAKING ENGLISH ACCESSIBLE
For many young people with whom I work, English and everything to do with it - their texts, their homework, punctuation, close reading, writing an essay - is a minefield. Often, what holds them back is a mixture of low confidence, fear of getting it wrong, and simply not having grasped the 'map' of how to 'do it'.

One of my main motivations, is to make English accessible; to take away the fear factor, to provide clear and simple structures, to grasp some key exam techniques, to demystify the exam paper, to clarify what the heck the exam paper is testing them on; to remind tutees that they have, naturally, learned one of the most difficult languages in the world and are fully capable of expressing themselves on paper, under pressure and against time.

However whimsical it may sound, as with many things in life, self-belief and understanding are powerful tools for success.

MAKING ENGLISH ACCESSIBLE
The demand for private tutoring is growing exponentially. As The Telegraph reported in 2012, "more than a quarter of parents use private tutoring to supplement their children's education", spending "£6bn a year in the UK." A double page spread in Femail, February 2015, states research that almost 1 in 4 children are now privately tutored, with pupils at private schools almost twice as likely to have private tutoring than those from state schools. Whatever explanation there is for this rise, cost to parents remains an obvious barrier to its provision.

I am, of course, a 'business', but I also firmly believe that access to tutoring should be made as wide as possible; education is a right and not a privilege. As such, while I have a standard rate for 1-1 tutoring, I am also very happy to discuss your requirements with you and to look at options available, such as small group tutoring where the cost per head can be significantly reduced.

Please do take the opportunity of discussing your requirements with me, rather than potentially losing the opportunity of providing tutorial support for your child.

Personal Description:
I am a 26-year old freelance journalist, born and raised in Germany. I have two Master's degrees, one in politics and one in digital journalism. Because of working in media & communications I am used to reviewing written text and highly aware of people's way of expressing themselves. I have a huge passion for languages and have learned Spanish for over 10 years now, including extensive stays in Spain, and I am perfectly fluent in English.

Teaching Experience:

Mostly 1 on 1 teaching and reviewing written texts over the last few years. Also, I taught a GCSE class in German at Royal Greenwich UTC for half a year. My students have significantly improved in their skills and I prepared several people for their move to Germany.

Tutoring Approach:

I prefer a natural approach to learning languages which means engaging in everyday conversations that help the speaker get used to the way they usually talk in a new environment. I also look precisely for mistakes in any kind of written work and take much care about correct grammar and spelling as I do in my own publications.

For politics in journalism I can also edit written work and talk through complex political and social processes which I have extensively analysed during my studies.

Personal Description:
I am an experienced degree level computer software professional with over 15 years experience designing and developing software using different technologies. I have a a graduate degree in Mathematics and a Master's degree in Computer Science.

Teaching Experience:

I have experience teaching Maths, Physics, Chemistry at the GCSE level and have regularly assisted university students with their computer science projects.

Tutoring Approach:

I like the hands on approach to tutoring because doing is the best way to learn. So, rather than prescribing how things are or should be done I like to work collaboratively with the student to explore options available to resolve a problem. I will set challenges to test knowledge. I will offer hints as clues to solving problems. I can teach a student how to decompose a problem into smaller parts that can easily be solved. I have done it time and time again and it works. I teach; I do not lecture.

Personal Description:
A PhD student currently writing up my thesis in Chemistry - specifically in the synthesis of new compounds to be used in organic electronics. I have a BSc Hons in Chemistry and a MSc in Drug Design and Discovery.

I am based in Glasgow, and I am an easy-to-speak-to, laid back person. I am passionate about learning, in particular in learning science. I believe that everyone should have access to learn at least a basic level of science as it drives the world around us today.

I have a wide range of experience in traditional chemistry through to current modern techniques and methods. I am well versed in both theoretical and practical chemistry. My main field is synthetic organic chemistry with a scope towards materials (solar cells in particular). Through my studies I have also covered a range of physics, maths, and computing, as well as research methods and planning.

I am highly motivated, passionate, and organised. I look forward to helping you achieve your own goals whether they are to improve a grade, pass a test, or just learn for pleasure or personal interest.

Teaching Experience:

I have tutored at undergraduate level, and I have demonstrated and taught in undergraduate chemistry labs, including handling assignment marking and feedback.

During my PhD I demonstrated in the undergraduate teaching laboratories, where I showed students how to correctly perform their experiments. I would cover the theory of the experiment, explain why it was important, highlight any important aspects and explain the best approach to completing the work. I would then receive and mark lab reports, giving feedback and providing any required additional help or details that each student required. Additionally, during my MSc I tutored an undergraduate student one-to-one because they were unhappy with their grade (a grade C). After some weeks of tuition the student attained a B+, missing out on an A by a few percent.

Tutoring Approach:

I like to ensure the student understands what the underlying theory, reasoning, and application of the topic is. I don't think rote memorisation is a particularly strong approach, especially without ensuring the basic foundations have been understood. I am happy to work towards achieving an improved grade, passing an exam, or simply learning for personal interest.
