Tutoring Approach:

I believe one to one private tuition requires a tutor who can adapt to the needs of the pupil.

I would wish to meet the pupil initially to establish how they may best be assisted and what the pupil's key areas of concern are.

In short, each mind, young or old, needs different approaches and I believe my strongest ability is an adaptability to meet the varying needs and requirements of every student.

My approach, in most cases would be to follow a curriculum, finding out where their difficulties lie within this curriculum and how it would be best to resolve them.

I tend to use past papers when it comes to exam based tuition as this is ultimately what they will be faced with come exam time! However, when I have a pupil for longer there is more scope for more imaginative teaching or simply assistance with difficult homework.

With each of my previous pupils I have needed and been able to assist them in a way that is individually appealing to them and I have never had a pupil who has not achieved their desired results.

As a student, little came easy for me.

I learned the hard way.

Now, with over 20 years of teaching experience in a variety of institutions - from Oxbridge entrance to comprehensives on 'Special Measures' - I am young enough to remember my struggles and old enough to know better.

I know how to bridge that gap for my tutees.

Teaching Experience:

This is my sixth year as a full-time tutor, but I was a secondary school teacher for 19 years before that.

I have experienced many types of academic performance from high-performing grammar schools to comprehensives on 'special measures'. I have held a variety of positions of responsibility within schools, particularly in the pastoral system such as Head of Year. I have been a grade-A examiner for AQA GCSE Geography.

During the last six years of 11 Plus entrance, including September 2014, 15 out of my 25 students have passed. I have also successfully helped one parent and child through the appeals procedure for grammar selection. Furthermore, a 12 Plus tutee in 2011 was the only girl to pass and get a place at South Wilts. Two out of three 12+ and 13+ tutees I have taught have passed their exams.

I have taught numerous syllabi: in the last six years I have tutored AQA, Edexcel, OCR and WJEC at A level Geography. Indeed, I taught the whole of the A2 Edexcel Geogaphy syllabus online to one a tutee in Moscow: he has now gained a place at Aston University. I have mainly tutored the AQA and Edexcel syllabi for GCSE Maths. It would be fair to say that the overwhelming majority of my A level tutees experience significant gains and regularly obtain A or B grades.

At the moment (March 2015) I have 20 tutees in total: this includes 4 home-school tutees doing a variety of subjects such as GCSE Maths and Geography as well as Key Stage 3 Maths, English, History, Geography, Citizenship and RE; three GCSE English tutees; one Key Stage 3 Maths tutee; two Key Stage 3 English tutees; three 12 Plus tutees; five Key Stage 2 Maths tutees; two GCSE Maths tutee; one KS5 numeracy tutee, one A Level Geography tutee and, finally, three GCSE Geography tutees.

I would say on average, across the year, I would have between 15 and 20 tutees each week. Nearer exam time, this can creep up to 25.

Tutoring Approach:

One size does not fit all . . .

Tutoring and learning should be natural and intuitive so that tutees can 'fly' by themselves.

To make the most of tuition, a tutee must be 'on-board'. If it's their idea - even better. A tutee that is in-charge of their own learning makes an excellent pupil.

As a tutor, I decide what is right for the tutee - not an institution. Parents often want someone who is familiar with the education system but independent enough to give an honest assessment. My main concern is the welfare of the tutee - not just their academic progress - nor the reputation of some teacher or institution. If something is not right for a tutee, no matter how forceful a parent might be or how much money I might lose, I simply will not do it. Each year there are a handful of tutees I turn away because of this.

In the first session I will try to identify what it is the tutee needs, and you may wish to quiz me in more detail. I will need access to school reports and examples of the tutee's work. Through discussion with my tutee and parental input it should become clear the reason for the tutoring.

From this 'snag' list, I will design a bespoke program to meet the educational needs of the tutee. It is flexible and, unlike a classroom situation, I can respond immediately to the needs of the tutee.

Homework will always be set, depending upon the demands placed upon the tutee by the normal school week. The tutee will be far more involved with learning than in a normal school class where they can 'hide', so prospective tutees need to expect plenty of chat and discussion, reviewing work and giving feedback.

For learning to be 'on the wing', to be natural and instinctive, tutees need to work hard without feeling the burden. This can only happen through enjoyment and a lot of laughter. That's my part: helping tutees to work really hard without realising it.

If at any point I feel unable to help, I won't just prolong tuition, or if our work has met its aims then I will call a halt. The point of tuition is not to need me anymore, so they can 'fly' all by themselves.

I offer two types of 'remote' tuition options at the moment:

i/ ONLINE FACE-TO-FACE TUITION: face-to-face on Skype is very good in dealing with syllabus issues and reinforcing and filling in the holes the class teachers leave behind. Face-to-face tuition lends itself well to visual resources such as diagrams, maps and pictures. It is primarily discussion-based and the tutee needs to take notes as we go along. I regularly send tutees files to prepare them for the lesson and to discuss in the lesson. If a tutee comes to face-to-face tuition and expects to be spoon-fed or entertained, it just won't work. Extra work can be set to test their written understanding. Usually, it is enough to go through topics the student struggles with. Once they 'click' with the topic/issue, we move onto other areas. Payment for this type of tuition is a flat fee each week to cover lesson preparation and the lesson itself. The marking of substantial pieces of work outside of lesson time such as essays will incur a modest marking fee.

ii/ CORRESPONDENCE-STYLE WITH UNLIMITED EMAIL SUPPORT: work is set through powerpoints, pdf files and word documents for the student to do on their own in their own time. This should keep the tutee occupied for between 1-3 hours each week, unless more is required. It is then returned to me within the week. I mark it and provide feedback in the form of an audio file (up to 30 mins), talking them through the various issues. Any amounts of email conversations to help the student with this particular piece of work are allowed, after feedback has been given. This is very much an ongoing and open-ended commitment, once work has been set and feedback given, and the student is totally free to contact me with any issues. As a result, the payment structure is open-ended and depends on the amount of time used to prepare resources, mark and give audio feedback. This is added up at the end of each week, and the client is then billed. Follow-up emails and support are not timed but are considered as a 'free' part. Generally, this time will be from about 45-90 mins per week. I keep a track of the time minute to minute and endeavour to keep the time used as short as possible while setting about 1-3 hours of work. This is very much a trust system of working. I tailor the work individually to suit the student as opposed to an ordinary correspondence course that just covers syllabus content.

I am a strong believer in making teaching and learning fun, meaningful and thought provoking - encouraging collaboration, presentation, debate and discussion as much as possible. I am an advocate of inquiry based and active learning where appropriate and in making the learning process as memorable and enjoyable as possible. At the same time I remain conscious of the need to constantly maintain the high expectations, pitch, pace and rigour which are needed for exam success in years 10-13. I pride myself on the fact that pupils of all levels and abilities enjoy coming to my classes even though they know they will have to work hard and apply themselves to the best of their ability. I went straight from university into drama school, and now work as a tutor and a professional actress. I have 4 years of tutoring experience and have helped children get into some of the best schools in the country, as well as aiding older children in getting the A*s they want at GCSE and A-level.

Teaching Experience:

My degree at Cambridge University was in Education studies with English and Drama. Although it was not a teacher training course, the Education Studies module of the degree involved learning an introduction to the philosophy, psychology, sociology and history of education. I was also, of course, able to benefit from the private seminar and tutorial system that Cambridge offers. As a result, I am fully aware of how beneficial a one-on-one teaching style can help to build confidence, and heighten learning and understanding.

I have now been tutoring ages 7-18 for 4 years, and have had brilliant feedback from my various jobs:

Tutoring Approach:

I am a confidence-buildling tutor.

My approach is generally fun. I am the tutor who is also the friend. I do not let a child get away with misbehaviour or laziness, but at the same time I am certainly not stern. My approach is without a doubt to help the child learn to love the subject and want improvement for themselves, not because I demand it of them.

Firstly, I will always aim to find the areas the child is having the most difficulty with and break it down to its simplest form to help them understand. Once a child has understood the basic principle of what we are learning, I aim to push them as far as I can with their learning - my memory of the best teacher's I had at school were the teacher's who pushed me even further than I needed to go, and who gave me more knowledge and information than I needed to know. I then found that I entered my exams relaxed and confident, knowing that I had excess knowledge. Rather than learning just to answer set questions in an exam, I felt I truly understood those subjects.



Of course, I would play everything by ear though, and I would not pile extra work or information on a child if they are still struggling. We will work at a pace that is comfortable but useful for them.

I like to find out in advance what topics students struggle with most so I can prepare notes from my own previous files and text books then go through a check list periodically with them. At the end of each section I like to give a short quiz to make sure everything has been understood and repeat the lesson if anything is unclear.

I'm a graduate of University College London in Politics and Spanish, originally hailing from south-west London. Outside of university I'm broadly interested in the subject of education, having volunteered for two consecutive summers on an education project in south-west Uganda. I've got a strong academic record, winning the prize for the top graduating student across all courses in the Arts & Humanities faculty at University College London in 2015. My specific credentials for the subjects taught are below:

Maths: A* grade in A-level Maths, with an average of 99% across the 6 modules

Politics: First class grade in every module taken at UCL.

History: A* at GCSE and A-level. Full marks in History A2 exams.

Spanish: A* at GCSE and A-level. First class grade in all Spanish modules taken, language and literature, at UCL. Lived in Madrid for 9 months, and have spent 6 months travelling and volunteering in South America.

Teaching Experience:

- Tutored LSE Politics undergraduate in quantitative methods and essay planning from September 2015 to January 2016
- Tutored a year five student Mathematics from January to June 2015, references available
- Tutored Mathematics at Common Entrance level in my final year of school in 2011

Tutoring Approach:

For school level: I have a friendly and informal style, based on building up a good relationship with the pupil, as this is the real advantage of the one-on-one set-up. Classes are structured, but I adapt things based on the situation and diverge from the lesson plan if necessary. I also work extensively with past and mock papers because I think practice is the best way to learn. Finally when I take on a pupil I am committed - if the pupil has problems or needs help between lessons I'm happy to be contacted via email.

For university level: I take an ad hoc approach depending on the student - I also like to keep things fun and informal. Particularly in essay subjects, I emphasise the need for a clear argument and structure, attributes highly valued at UK universities.

Personal Description:
I am a year 13 pupil at Sutton Grammar Sixth Form, a very highly ranked secondary school in South London. I take Maths, Further Maths, and Physics at A-level. I have great communication skills and I am told that I am good at explaining complicated ideas simply. As a sixth former, I do interact with GCSE students, a few years younger than myself, every day at school.
Lastly, because I have been through the GCSE system so recently, I have a great understanding of what is required for top grades.

Teaching Experience:

I have had experience in tutoring my cousin in KS3 maths before, during which I became a better tutor and better understood how to help others achieve.
In July 2012, I completed a two week placement at a primary school which I found to be a rewarding and I acquired a wealth of experience in teaching. I worked with children right from reception, to much older children in year six, helping them to understand things that would help them in secondary school. In that two weeks, I learnt to meet the needs of the individual student and worked one to one with them to help them understand what they had trouble with.

Tutoring Approach:

My approach to tutoring is a time tested one. As a tutor for a student, I will first ask you to communicate to me the specific areas that are of concern. Then, I will go away, make a lesson plan, provide some exercises for me to work through the student with, and adapt the lesson plan as the lesson goes on to fit the needs of the student to maximise their progress per lesson.
My sister tutored myself and others in this way and I benefited from it as you can see from my GCSE grades. I will always be involved on a personal level, as one to one tuition should be, although still with an emphasis on individual work, and being able to see what my student can achieve.

I moved to England in February, 2010 as I really wanted to improve my English.

Teaching Experience:

In Spain I worked as a private tutor for 12 years. I am familiar with the syllabus at GCSE and A level.

I offer support in all relevant skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing. I can support students in improving their intonation and pronunciation in order to reach high standards of accuracy. Personal Description:
I am currently a PhD in Chemical Engineering at the University of Cambridge (a few weeks to go to get entitled 'Dr' :) ). Before this, I have obained BSc and MSc at Huddersfield. I achieved First Class Honours with the marks of 80+ out of 100 (I have ever achieved 100 out of 100 in Physical Chemistry, and 95+ in Organic Chemistry). I am not a quick learner but I can demostrate my way of finding the shortcut to achieving great marks under some time constraints. I have offered a number of supervison and tutorings to students from A-level to Masters in Chemistry and Physics and even computing classes during the time of my study. I am a Chinese, so I am also able to teach Chinese and related cultural stuffs (e.g. history and calligraphy) together with my wife who is a Chinese teacher with overseas qualification equlivalent.
