Personal Description:
I am a mathematician, with a special interest in applied mathematics and statistics. I worked for some years in University departments as a tutor and then lecturer. More recently I have worked for almost two decades in industry as a mathematician at a prestigious research centre in Cambridge. I am familiar with many aspects of secondary education through my daughter, who has recently completed her A levels at Hills Road 6th form college, and a son at secondary school. My daughter has just begun reading PPE at at Oriel College Oxford. I am currently working at the Dept. of Engineering, University of Cambridge.

Teaching Experience:

I have taught Mathematics and Physics, to undergraduates from a wide variety of disciplines. I have particular experience of teaching Mathematics to people whose primary interests lie in Business studies and in Engineering. I also gained valuable insight into adult education when I taught adult part-time students.
I have also provided tutorials for students with many different requirements including A level and undergraduate Physics & Mathematics courses and, for example, GMAT Mathematics prep for MBA entrance exams.
Recently I have had the opportunity to tutor intensively for STEP tests and this has become a personal interest -there is always a new challenge, and the examiners are skilled at finding new ways to test the same knowledge level.

Tutoring Approach:

The details of the correct approach vary from one tutee to another, but the principles remain the same. I seek to establish the student's ability within the context of a given aim and to then set realistic objectives.
I think that most students have more mathematical ability than they themselves believe; this can be brought out in a positive fashion once negative stereotypes are discarded. Also the application of mathematics to the real world can be exciting and profitable.

Parental Comment
Hi Brian,

I hope you're enjoying the Summer break.

I just wanted to let you know that Kalen has a A* for maths and an A for further Maths. He's very pleased with this and on behalf of him I'd like to say thank you so much for all your help.

Overall he got A*A*AAB and is off to Warwick to do a general engineering course.

Thanks again Brian,

Suneela

STUDENT COMMENTS
Dear Brian. I found our tutorials very helpful and feel much more able to hit the ground running when I return to Oxford. I will be sure to recommend you to anyone else I know in need of tuition.
Peter N, returning undergraduate.

Brian helped me to revise my university maths before starting an MSc course 10 years after completing my undergraduate degree. He was patient, non-judgmental of my rusty abilities, and gave useful examples of mathematical problems to help explain some very difficult concepts. He is very reliable and a pleasure to work with. I would have no problem recommending Brian to others and would certainly see him again for further tuition should the need arise.
David C, returning graduate student

Another parent comment
Brian is helping my daughter who attends Hills Road with both physics and maths and she has just had her fifth session. This is the first time with have engaged with a personal tutor so really wasn't sure what we were doing and started out with some trepidation. We soon were able to ensure that the hour we spent with Brian was really productive and useful. Brian has been really helpful and and this has increased my daughters confidence and knowledge which is exactly what we were hoping for.

New student comments
I'm just emailing to tell you that my physics unit 2 exam went quite well. There were only a few small questions that I couldn't answer. I will tell you my result when I get them on the 14th of August. I must thank you for helping me over the past few months. I really have no clue how badly these exams would have gone if you did not help me. Thank you so much for your help.
Calum M AS Physics student.

Personal Description:
Hi! My name's Ed. I read Classics at Cambridge before going on to train at the Bristol Old Vic. I'm now working as a professional actor in London.

I tutor in English, and all areas of Latin and Ancient Greek. If it's of interest, I particularly specialized in my finals papers on Homer, Virgil, Horace, and the evolution of tragedy.

Though I read Classics, a large chunk of my finals actually ended up being part of the English course - specifically tracing the origins of tragedy through to the present day. As an actor, too, I'm continually having to familiarize myself with new areas of literature, be it poetry, drama, or prose, with the advantage, I hope, of an extremely practical approach.

Teaching Experience:

Overall, I've found it best to keep a balance between tutoring English and Classics. I like to be teaching a range of things.

When moving to Bristol I was lucky enough to be offered a part-time teaching post with the Classics department at Clifton College. Over the two years I primarily taught A level language work in Greek and Latin, as well as coaching their prospective candidates for Oxford and Cambridge.

I've also done a lot of free-lancing in all sorts of areas for both English and Classics, tutoring Oxbridge applicants as well as students at both school and university level.

The work I've done with my tutees has varied widely. In Latin and Greek, I've assisted some specifically in translating set texts both at school and university level (I'm now very familiar with the OCR Latin syllabus); I've introduced others, who wished to explore beyond their prescribed syllabus, to new areas of literature; and with others I've worked on more wide-ranging ways to deepen literary analysis or approach translation.

I should probably add that my language work with school students has almost exclusively involved tackling the inadequacies of the confounded Cambridge Latin Course! This seems to be taught in virtually every school but seemingly never elects to teach grammar, which I find utterly bizarre. If you're a victim of this clueless course I'm more than happy to help!

In terms of English tuition, I've been fortunate enough to have a similarly broad range of tutees, at GCSE, A level, and university standard, though a high proportion have been Oxbridge candidates.

Some references from previous tutees below:

Naomi, A Level Latin and Greek (2013)

Ed,

Sorry it's so early but I just thought I'd let you know I got my Cambridge grades! Thank you so much for everything once again!

Neirin, Latin GCSE (2013)

Hello Ed. We are so delighted with Neirin's results, absolutely fabulous. And who would have thought - an A star in Latin! Thank you for all your effort and encouragement. He couldn't have done it without you. Enjoy the rest of the summer and good luck with the writing.

Katie, Oxbridge Ancient Greek (2013)

Ed's work with Katie has been completely outstanding. I think we were asking for something quite demanding, a combination of literature and language, with inspiration to boot, and he delivered it superbly. Katie was super-enthused by his approach. I think they both thoroughly enjoyed the classes (indeed from the sound of it I would have enjoyed them myself!) Ed has a combination of intellect, passion and (as far as I can judge) a real feel for the texts!

Zac, Scholarship Latin (2014)

Ed has been tutoring our 11 year old for Latin scholarship papers. In 5 sessions he has taken him to a new level and has totally inspired him! We can't recommend him highly enough!...

Thank you very much for all your help, couldn't have got the A without your tutoring.

Hope all goes well for you at theatre school and you're enjoying the summer.

Best wishes,

Tutoring Approach:

I think it's impossible to pin down a sure-fire method of effective tutoring for any given person. People are different, and different methods work with different people.

That said, I am a firm believer that you cannot simply speak at someone. Learning has to be an active process, and I think there has to be involvement from both sides for things to sink in. In this light, I do try to make things enjoyable, and also to limit shortcuts; I'm of the view that it's far better to invest the time in getting firmly to grips with a subject, be it an instance of grammar or literary concept. In the long run that is a shortcut in itself.

Personal Description:
I am a patient, friendly and enthusiastic tutor. I come from an academic background (Molecular biology, biochemistry and genetics) rather than teaching and as such, have a thorough and extensive knowledge of the subjects I tutor in. I enjoy sharing my enthusiasm with others and I'm also good at explaining some of the more complex elements of biology. I am also registered as a STEM ambassador and visit local schools to share my passion for Biology and Science.

When I am not teaching, I enjoy cooking, swimming, playing tennis, walking and watching Hull City!

Teaching Experience:

I have tutored >60 students, mainly in biology at A-level/Highers, but also separate sciences and general science at GCSE level. My students have achieved excellent results; with most improving by at least two grades. Recent successes include an AS student moving from grade E up to a A and an A2 student moving up from an unclassified (U) grade up to a B. I am more than happy to take on students of all abilities. I have also taught at University level (2nd year biochemistry) and have mentored undergraduate and postgraduate students. I have some experience tutoring students with mild specific learning difficulties (ADHD, Asperger's).

Tutoring Approach:

My approach varies depending on the student as all have different needs and learning styles. For GCSE/A-level tuition, I usually concentrate on exam practice, with in-depth topic study for the more problematic subjects. I also use multimedia aids to help students visualise biological/chemical processes where appropriate and I have created powerpoint files covering almost all AS and A2 Biology topics.

Personal Description:
I have recently graduated from a Masters degree in drama at The Guildhall School of Music and Drama having graduated from Cambridge University with a degree in English. Teaching has always been a great passion of mine and one to one tutoring is the most rewarding, in its opportunity for directness and specificity.

Teaching Experience:

I have been tutoring privately for three years and have also tutored drama in schools over the last few years. I have also had teaching experience abroad, teaching English as a foreign language in Indian and African schools.

Tutoring Approach:

I aim to make learning fun whilst also ensuring fast and effective progress. I ensure that I get to know my students' ways of learning as soon as possible in order to tailor my tutoring style to their individual needs. I hope to be able to offer a way of learning different but utterly beneficial to the current exam syllabuses which can often seem fairly daunting and rigid on first impression.

Personal Description:
I'm an experienced stage and television actor with a degree in English (2.i) from Trinity Hall, Cambridge and a 2-year post-grad qualification from the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art. I live in central London (Westminster) and enjoy balancing out the right brain activities of acting with the rather more left brain activities of teaching - especially Latin, which I studied through A-Level to degree, taking a Latin translation and literary criticism paper in Part 1 of my Cambridge Tripos.

Teaching Experience:

I have taught both privately and at a range of different schools and colleges for many years. My private client base has principally been in teaching Latin for Common Entrance and GCSE. In terms of classroom experience, I have worked as a supply Latin teacher at Eaton House Schools and as an A-Level English Tutor at Collingham Tutors. The majority of my work is as a private tutor travelling to people's homes and offering additional support to 10-16 year olds who are struggling with their Latin. I have a huge success rate in terms of results, regularly turning C-grade students into A-graders.

Tutoring Approach:

My approach is both pragmatic and personal. Every child is different and therefore every child requires a subtly different approach. In terms of teaching English Literature my principle objective is to inspire. In terms of teaching Latin my key concerns are rigour and attention to detail. With the right approach it is often very easy to turn a child who hates Latin at school into one that (even if it is secretly) both loves it and does very well.

Personal Description:
I am a component engineer working for Jaguar Land Rover in Coventry. I have a 2.1 class Bachelor's and Masters degree from the University of Leeds, studying Aeronautical and Aerospace Engineering. I also worked with Airbus and Rolls-Royce via Atkins as an Aerospace Engineer previously.

I have a long history of tutoring students since completing O Levels (GCSE) myself. I did my O Levels under the Cambridge International curriculum in July 2007 with 8As (including Mathematics & Additional Mathematics) and 1B. I also did four A Levels under the Edexcel board in Jan 2010 including Pure Mathematics (A) and Further Pure Mathematics (A). I had an average score of 596 out of 600 in A level Maths.

Teaching Experience:

I have been tutoring GCE & GCSE students for over 7 years. The subjects I have most experience in tutoring are Maths and Physics. I offer both one-to-one tuition and studying in a groups. I also offer a discounted price for 12 or 24hrs block booking, please contact for further details.

Tutoring Approach:

All subjects are taught through explanation, reasoning and home practices. Science is taught through understanding of the theory and practising problem solving while Mathematics is taught by showing the simple steps and with small tricks to remember the method or to remember common values such as sin 30=0.5. Primary English as a foreign language is taught through reading to expand vocabulary, writing to improve spelling and grammar as well as conversing to bring proficiency and comfort. After every session, the topic related exercises and homework are given for better understanding and to build student's confidence to solve any problem relating the topic.

Personal Description:
I am a QTS Mathematics and economics specialist, with degree in maths and Master in Finance and banking. Though my initial goal had to do with the banking industry, I preferred tutoring and changing the lives of my students. It is something that I love and I wouldn't change it with anything in the world. It makes me proud to think of all the successful and important people that are among my past tutees as well as many good professionals. I am associated with many tutoring agencies, and I am known to deliver outstanding exam results.
80% of my new students are introduced by my past students.
I have written university level books on Analysis and Mathematics Competitions and taught Quantitative maths, Micro, Macro, Analysis Real and Complex, Algebra, Probabilities, Statistics, Operational Research,Calculus, Numerical Analysis, Financial Maths etc.
I prefer challenging, searching students who seek the essence behind the strict mathematical formalism, but certainly I can help anyone armed with a will to learn.

Teaching Experience:

30 years of teaching, including teaching students from UK universities, Oxford-Brookes, Edinburgh, Kent etc., I have written books in Real and Complex analysis ( in Greek) and exercises for mathematical competitions (in English)
I have Bsc in mathematics and Masters in Banking and Finance. I have taught Financial Management for institutes of professional education. Also taught for Cambridge STEP exams, Oxford MAT exams IB Maths, A level Economics and Business..

Tutoring Approach:

My approach to teaching is fresh, based on pure logic. I follow the Socratic method, where the students discover the principles and conclusions that already exist in their mind.
The results are great and the parents are amazed to see maths-averse students to turn into math lovers and exam winners. I am so certain about my method, that I can give you a free first hour, just to realise the potential of it. These methods are going to be incorporated into an educational technology startup shortly.
I am extremely proud regarding the performance of my students and I firmly believe that all together we can make this world a better place.

Below there are some practical rules regarding my tuition. Please read carefully:
1. I do not solve exercises or projects and send them to the tutee without tutoring involved. I consider this to be not only illegal, but also unethical, demotivating and unfair to other students.
2. There is a maximum number of students that I can take. For that reason, I would like to know from the start how many hours you will need when we approach the exam period.
3. If a student introduces me to another student, he will have a special price.
4. The homework is based on exam papers and at times becomes very demanding, especially close to the exams. The student must always do his homework. In case he doesn't for two consecutive sessions, the lesson is terminated.
5. If the student is going to stop the lessons during term breaks, he must inform me beforehand.

Conversation in a subject which interests the student in order to evaluate the level of French . After that following the course work with the student and finding the difficulties, and placing them in the subject of interest to make understanding easier. If the conversation is improved the student appears to understand the theory better afterwards

Personal Description:
I am a qualified and experienced secondary level teacher of maths and physics.

My academic qualifications include a degree in mathematics (Open University) and a degree in Manufacturing (Bath University).

I have a PGCE in secondary level teaching and hold Qualified Teacher Status.

I am a part-time maths tutor for the Open University.

Teaching Experience:

I have taught maths and physics at GCSE and A level in the UK and abroad (Spain, Kuwait and Saudi Arabia) for 15 years.

My experience includes teaching numeracy to adults, maths up to degree level and physics to A level.

I am an examiner for A-level maths and physics.

Tutoring Approach:

I enjoy teaching students of all abilities to approach maths and physics with confidence and to present their solutions in such a way that not only earns the maximum marks in exam conditions but also develops the correct mathematical and scientific thinking for future study.

Maths and physics are subjects which most people can understand provided the tutor starts at the right point and is happy to explain the concepts in different ways.

My priority is to ensure that you walk into the examination with confidence and knowing how to answer the questions.

Personal Description:
I am a friendly maths tutor local to Camborne, Falmouth and the surrounding area offering one-to-one tutoring to give extra support not often given in the classroom. I work full time as an design engineer, so I am available in the evenings and weekends. I teach up to GCSE level maths I have a 1st class masters degree in engineering. Whether you just need the occasional session to go over problem areas within the curriculum, or if you need regular study time, or even just help with homework, I am flexible depending on what the student needs. I can tutor at your home if you require, but I also offer tutoring from my own home, in a relaxed environment.

Teaching Experience:

I have 2 years experience working as a design engineer, applying my maths skills everyday. I have tutored on and off for 4 years teaching both maths and also offering guitar lessons.

Tutoring Approach:

My approach is to try and understand what the student requires, and address these requirements specifically to give the best results. Should you need help on one aspect of the curriculum (people often shudder at the thought of algebra!), we can overcome the fear the y's and x's and master the topic. Should you need help keeping up in the classroom, or not understanding before the teacher moves on, we can take our time in the evening to make sure nothing has been missed. Should you need to get through an exam, we can make a study plan together to make sure you get the grade you want! I believe there is no 'one size fits all' to learning maths, and we can discuss all the details at your leisure.

Personal Description:
Highly experienced tutor, currently completing my PhD in chemistry at Imperial College London.

With an enthusiastic approach to learning and a real passion for my subject I develop students into inquisitive, capable learners and consider mentoring students in a love of science to be an important goal.

I achieved the highest grade possible in all science and maths subjects during my school education and having completed my Masters in Chemistry at Oxford in 2011 I have also worked in various roles in industry and academia, allowing me to convey the real significance of science to the students who study with me.

A & A/S-Levels : 4As (2007)
GCSEs : 9A*s, 2As (2005)

Teaching Experience:

Associate Fellow of the Higher Education Academy

I have over three years experience, teaching over 100 students from secondary up to undergraduate level. I am a professionally trained undergraduate tutor and laboratory demonstrator, recently awarded an Associate Fellowship of the HEA in recognition of my contribution to undergraduate learning and my continuing development as an educational practitioner.

As a result of my teaching programme at Imperial College, I was awarded a Student Academic Choice Award - chosen by the students - for excellence in chemistry tutoring and communication.

Alongside my direct tutoring experience I have also taken part in the assessment and development of teaching material in chemistry and in the interview process at Imperial College, allowing me to offer targeted advice for students who wish to excel. Having attended both Oxford and Imperial College I can offer highly relevant admissions advice for university entrance interviews at Oxbridge and London-based institutions.

Working with students from across the world, I have experience of tutoring students whose first language is not English and am familiar with dealing with any issues that arise from this.

Some reviews of my work:

"My teaching experience with Peter has been really positive, he really challenges me to achieve my best and I have particularly developed my critical thinking skills with him" (A-level student)

"Peter is really friendly and helpful, as an international student who has studied in several countries I can say his methods are very strong and he explains complicated topics very well" (A-level student)

"I struggled with several areas of my course before studying with Peter, but now things are so much easier! He can explain things in so many ways when I'm stuck, highly recommended" (GCSE student)

"Peter is one of the best tutors we have had and is always on time and prepared, he is obviously very knowledgeable about the subjects he teaches" (Parent of GCSE student)

"My daughter had lessons with Peter for several months and her confidence in the subject increased hugely over this time, I would strongly recommend his services, the improved exam results speak for themselves" (Parent of A-level student)

Tutoring Approach:

Having taught scientific subjects up to undergraduate level I have a keen understanding of the different learning styles of students and am able to adapt my teaching to suit the student.

Using various teaching methodologies to deepen understanding, wherever possible I like to employ additional techniques such as scientific software and interactive elements alongside theory in order to bring the subject to life.

Students who study with me are encouraged and supported in developing critical thinking skills, by analysing information more deeply, allowing them to become more efficient, resourceful learners in the future.

I have two main approaches for the students I teach:
For students struggling in a subject I aim to build up confidence in the area by ensuring lessons are relaxed and engaging rather than focused on specific topics. Once a student has become more comfortable in the subject, more targeted study can take place based on the syllabus.
For students who are competent in their subject but need additional support to excel, I take a more focused approach and work with the student on any weak points and advanced topics, supported by exam technique and practice questions.
In both cases I aim to broaden the knowledge of the student beyond specific subject guidelines, with the goal of developing a passion for their subject.

I look forward to hearing from you.
