Personal Description:
I am a passionate linguist who is a trained teacher with extensive experience both in the classroom and as a tutor. I have a friendly, approachable manner and recognise the need to build confidence in language learners to maximise their success. My experience of living and working in Paris, Peru and Mexico has given me an insight into the cultures and ways of life of the target language countries. I bring this to my students to instill in them an interest and love of language learning.

Teaching Experience:

I am a qualified teacher of French and Spanish with 2 years experience in the secondary classroom and 3 years experience tutoring and teaching abroad. I have taught English as a foreign language in South America and Sri Lanka. I am fully up to date with current National Curriculum and examination requirements. I am a passionate linguist with the experience and energy required to prepare students to face school and exams with confidence.

Tutoring Approach:

I aim to fit in with the needs of my tutees and tailor my resources and focus appropriately. It is essential to address the individual requirements of each student. This will be done through an initial meeting to ascertain targets which will then be followed up in the subsequent teaching sessions. I make tutoring sessions fun and dynamic, enhancing the pupils' learning through the use of information techonology, songs, role plays and games.

Teaching Experience:

I used to work as University lecturer in English as a second language in China and was awarded Excellent Teacher. I have been tutoring English speakers in Mandarin Chinese since moving to the UK. Having been a Mandarin tutor and lecturer in English makes me a versatile teacher. I have taken the opportunity to instruct a wide variety of students from different backgrounds and with varied learning purposes. As a result of 10 years' language teaching, I am able to utilise my extensive teaching skills, experience and knowledge to implement comprehensive and systematic teaching approaches to fully support students' needs, design effective teaching strategies, curriculum and learning materials, make accurate assessment, offer positive advice and ensure students to stay fully motivated and interested.

I teach a wide range of levels from the beginners to the advanced either for academic, business purposes or personal interests -

• Academic Mandarin (GCSE, A Level and HSK)
• Universal Mandarin
• Business Mandarin
• Mandarin for Kids
• Tourism Mandarin
• Survival Mandarin

• Learn Chinese with Me (1-4) (People's Education Press)
• Easy Chinese (Beijing University Press)
• Easy Peasy Chinese (Mandarin Chinese for beginners)
• Edexcel GCSE Chinese
• Edexcel Chinese for AS
• Edexcel Chinese for A2
• Business Chinese for Beginners, Intermediate, Advanced (Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press)
• Winning in China- Business Chinese (Beijing Language and Culture University Press)
• New Century Business Chinese Series- Listening (Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press)
• Talk - Mandarin Chinese (BBC Active; The ideal course for absolute beginners)
• 15 Minute Mandarin Chinese (Learn in just 12 weeks)

Learners' favourite text books can be used as advised.

Tutoring Approach:

One of the most effective ways I assist my students is by developing and presenting thorough and stimulating lesson plans that facilitate all learning styles. I research, locate and incorporate a variety of resources to accommodate students' needs and I integrate literature, workshop, classroom activities and technology to ensure the students are able to comprehend and retain the concepts of the target language.

Also working as a teacher in both Mandarin Chinese and English has given me a deep insight into different aspects between the two languages in the features of pronunciation, vocabulary, sentence structure and grammar, etc. so that it allows me to explain explicitly similarities and differences of the mother tongue and target language to the English-speaking learners for the purpose of enhancing their learning efficiency.

Personal Description:
I am a fairly recent (but mature) graduate who is hugely enthusiastic about learning. For fun I like to dress up as a Tudor and take part in Living History events. I also very much like to take my slightly dopey dog to the beach where I regularly need to prevent her swimming to France!

Teaching Experience:

My first experience of teaching was through home-educating my daughter from when she was 6 through to GSCE-level. I then went on to do a PGCE in Lifelong Learning (post-16 education) during which time I taught a range of business and tourism modules. Since completing my PGCE I have completed short-term contracts teaching English as a Foreign Language. Presently, I work part-time as an enabler for physically and/ or mentally disabled students in higher education and part-time as a private tutor.I have experience tutoring adult learners, home-educated students (i.e. delivery of full syllabus) and students who are at school but need additional subject help, for example with exam preparation.

Tutoring Approach:

I understand how important it is to have a supportive and patient teacher who is willing to answer any question any number of times until the student 'gets it' and that's what I am always prepared to do. I think learning should be fun and relevant to our lives and endeavour to carry this over into lessons. The exact approach would always depend on the needs and wishes of the student.

Personal Description:
I am a second year Physics with Astrophysics student at the University of York. I am a confident, mature individual who is driven to be successful. I have a down to earth personality which will make me more relatable and easier to pass on my breadth of knowledge.

Teaching Experience:

The only experience I have with students was in my second year of college. In collaboration with the Maths department, I ran a peer mentoring session with first years every week. This was an hour long meeting in the library or a classroom with 5-6 students, where I would help them with topics they struggled with or go over some details from their lessons.

Tutoring Approach:

I think the most important and effective way of learning is through practice of the subject. I would use the first part of a session to go over some important points to a topic and teach basic skills. Then put these into practice, going through questions, aided and unaided, including past paper questions.

Personal Description:
Hi! I'm an Oxford graduate with a 2:1 in English Language and Literature. I graduated in 2013 and went on to study an MSc in Psychology at Oxford Brookes, in which I achieved a distinction. Since then, I have been working as an administrator and looking for ways to continue to engage with the subjects that interest me. Tutoring appealed to me at once as a rewarding way to put the skills that I learnt during my degree and masters to good use. Reading English at Oxford has honed my critical thinking, analytical abilities and study skills, while my masters has given me experience in data analysis and conducting research. In 2012 I also co-wrote a novel which was recently published in the UK, which really deepened my understanding of how to write effectively. I'd love to tutor others and help them to develop these skills too! In my spare time, I like to read and write fiction. My main address is in AL7, but I am also happy to tutor in Barnet and the surrounding area. As well as tutoring, I also specialise in editing, copy-editing and proofreading academic essays, job applications and CVs, and articles.

Teaching Experience:

I have successfully completed an assessment for the selective tutoring agency Blue Tutors. During the assessment I had to demonstrate my tutoring ability to a trained assessor, who described my communication skills as 'excellent'.
In my final term at Oxford, I volunteered with Schools Plus, a program which runs after school tuition sessions for struggling students in areas of economic disadvantage. I spent half a term working with GCSE English students, tutoring them on an individual basis in the run up to their January modules. As part of the selection process for the program, I also attended tutoring training.
When I was in the 6th form (in 2009), I also volunteered as a classroom assistant in my school. I was working with students who were having difficulty with essay-based subjects like History and English. I worked with two students in their History classes, helping them to understand the work they were set in class and working through it with them. I had to use my knowledge of French to help one student who had not yet learnt to speak fluent English, translating the teacher's instructions for her and helping her with words she did not understand. Between 2009-10, I helped to run two after-school classes for Key Stage 2 pupils, one in Literacy and Art and another in Drama. This involved planning and delivering lessons to classes of about 5-10 children, and keeping them engaged with the topics they were learning through activities designed to both teach and entertain.

Tutoring Approach:

My experience of tutoring in the past has shown me the importance of patience and respect in teaching. Especially in essay-based subjects, it is crucial that a teacher allows their pupils space to develop their own ideas, and respects their independent thought. Learning by rote has only limited usefulness: the best way to excel at a subject is to understand it, so I always explain concepts as fully as possible and move at the tutee's pace, making sure that they have properly grasped each concept or issue before moving on to the next. My Schools Plus training emphasised the idea that the goal of tutoring is to help a student to help themselves, enabling them to tackle problems rather than solving things for them. I think that this is fantastic advice, and it is a rule which I always try to bear in mind when tutoring.

Personal Description:
I am a Masters Student studying Oil and Gas Engineering in the University of Aberdeen, UK. I was the best Mathematics student during my Primary and Secondary School education (in virtually every class), so i was among the students selected from the mathematics club to represent the school in various Mathematics competitions, of which i won some prizes. I am a calm individual who understands that everyone is unique with different speed of comprehension. I enjoy teaching Mathematics to all levels, especially the young minds because I believe practicing, solving and understanding mathematics sharpens the brain in understanding and quickly solving other problems in life as they grow. I have over two years of experience; a year in teaching secondary school students in both a government and private school, and over a year experience in teaching a few 1st year undergraduate students. I also believe that mathematics can be understood by everyone, once placed in the right environment (quiet, fun, musical, etc) . My first task would be to find out which suits the student best.

Teaching Experience:

1) Over 1 year tutoring a few 1st year Undergraduate students
2) 1 year full-time teacher in both a private and a government secondary school

Tutoring Approach:

My initial approach would be; identifying the best environment (quiet, fun, etc) suitable for the particular individual, then comprehending the individual's speed or rate of understanding. I will pick up from this point and build up the individual's confidence by explaining the basics of approaching each question while solving as many questions as possible. In this way, the student would be able to tackle or attempt similar questions at his/her level.

Hello there!
I am a Mothertongue Italian teacher and actor. I have studied Linguistics and taught English and Spanish in Rome and Italian in the UK. I've also acted for many years on stage & cinema. Acting and teaching are surely what I enjoy the most in life.

Teaching Experience:

I have studied Linguistics at Tor Vergata University in Rome and I've been teaching English and Spanish in Italy and Italian in England for three years now.
Being also an actor and enjoying teaching, I am an acting coach and teacher as well.

Tutoring Approach:

First of all, I check my students' level and goals. Starting from there, I am an intense teacher and coach and I give the best that I can at all times, keeping the time we spend together useful and enjoyable for my students.
I have always been very satisfied at the general success of my students, that's probably because I am quite empathic and I always chose my teaching method basing it on my student's personality and will-to-learn.

I am based in Streatham Hill and I tutor at my place or I can travel in the London area.

Personal Description:
I am a friendly, calm and patient teacher with a variety of experience that I am able to bring into my classroom by day, and in tutoring outside of school hours. I have worked with students from primary to university level, as well as tutored adult ESL students during my time living abroad.

As a secondary school teacher, I have high expectations of my students and like to push them to their full potential and keen to inspire confidence and faith in their ability. I thoroughly enjoy working with students one to one when I am able to personally tailor teaching to the learner's level at a pace that suits them. I currently work in a successful 'outstanding' school, therefore, I have a very strong English department where I am able to gain resources and skills I can bring to my tutees.

I am passionate about inspiring confidence and belief, and love exploring my subject with others; opening their minds to alternative approaches and guiding the way. I use a lot of humour in my lessons and like to create a calm, relaxed and enjoyable environment and get to know my students as individuals. Having spent much time with a personal tutor at GCSE to overcome my fear of Mathematics as a teenager, I have a personal understanding of the empathy and patience required by a tutor, as well as a passion to enable my tutees to reach their goals and develop confidence in themselves.

Teaching Experience:

After graduating from Roehampton University with a 2:1 in English Literature and Theatre Studies, I went on to work as a Teaching Assistant in SEN working with students with a range of needs, but focused on teaching students with Dyslexia/Dyspraxia, which then became my research focus for one of my assignments during my PGCE teacher training.

I have since taught in a wide range of schools; I left Britain to work abroad in an IB international boarding school, PTIS Chiang Mai, as a Boarding Houseparent and ESL/SEN teacher, as well as tutoring seniors completing their final IB projects. In the evenings, my responsibilities included tutoring boarders aged 9 - 19 for all subjects. After my one year internship, I taught in a British international school for two years, Varee International Chiang Mai, where I taught KS3/4 IGCSE English and SEN and was lead assessor for entrance tests for ESLstudents. I also tutored adult Thai learners English outside of my school hours as part of a language exchange to help me to develop my Thai.

Since returning to the UK, I have taught KS3/4 History and Geography, and now KS3 - KS4 English in an outstanding secondary academy in West London.
I am a flexible teacher in terms of subjects covered, but English/literature, grammar, ESL and study skills are my core areas.

Tutoring Approach:

When I first meet a new student, I conduct an initial assessment to be able to adapt my lessons to the individual needs of the student.
I have very high expectations of my students, so push when they feel like 'giving up', but practise compassion when they need support and encouragement. With confidence and patience, they can find a way.
I may on occasion set small homework tasks (if the student does not have too much with their school already) to continue learning between sessions. I will often ask a student to e-mail this to me before our next session so I can give feedback and work on mistakes for our next session, thus maximising learning in our short sessions.
I have a fun approach to my teaching as this is vital to engage young learners, as well as for my own enjoyment of sharing my passion for my subject.

Personal Description:
As a child, I learned by being told, by beatings, shaming and a strict examination system. As you can imagine I didn't learn much that I could later apply to my academic life. As a result, I became an inveterate learner, always interested in learning the next thing. At one point, the drive to learn was because I didn't see myself as being good enough. Later on, that drive became an interest in discovering my own abilities as well as about helping others. I have now learned so much about how not to teach that I have gained good insight into how learning happens. I am keen to ensure all my learners learn how to learn and understand how to apply what they discover.

Teaching Experience:

My background is in teaching, training and facilitation. I have over 25 years experience of teaching in different forms having worked within primary, secondary and further education settings. I am an NVQ / TAQA assessor and trained and assessed Parenting Practitioners and other candidates up to Level 5 in Health & Social Care. I have specialist skills in Personal Effectiveness subjects such as Report Writing, Speed Reading, Presentation Skills.

Tutoring Approach:

Being a private tutor used to be the preserve of only those with the highest qualifications and the greatest experience. Now all that's changed.

However good a tutor is, the learner needs to be astute in order know if the tutor is a good match for her / him. Importantly, making the right choice can be complex.
Here are three tips to help you decide if I am or someone else is right for you. The following tips describe how I teach and how I will enable you to be an independent learner.

1. Look for a tutor who can teach you how to learn
Here's a funny thing… learners study a subject, sometimes for months and years and can come away with no long-term memory of the underpinning principles of the subject. As disturbing, they have no ongoing understanding of the subject. They are unable to apply what they tried to learn. This is easily resolved by clearing up past issues with learning. In Applied Scholastics it is now well known that if as a learner, you are helped to do so, you can learn any subject. This is central to how I teach.

2. Look for tutors who understand the main barriers to learning and can help you overcome them
There are three main barriers to study. They relate to confusion over an idea, missing out critical steps and having unclear ideas about the subject under study. Gaining a day to day facility with overcoming those barriers is key to effective and efficient study. I use these methods to help my own reading and study. I will introduce them to you so that you can use them too.

3. Look for tutors who can help you find the information you need so that you keep expanding your own understanding of the subject

Sometimes, a learner during a course of study will find that s/he wants to give up. Have you ever experienced this? Whenever that happens it is because there is something - an idea, a symbol, a form of punctuation, the use of a word, or something else - that you did not understand. Without the proper factual information on this and without the correct knowledge of why and how this happens, the learner will struggle. Without knowing what remedies to apply, the learner will give up.

When you study, you are investing time and energy. In this case, money too. If you want to discover more about how you learn, what your barriers to study are and how to understand more, you will benefit from being an independent learner. That will repay your investment.

Those three critical points should help you decide if I could be right for you. They briefly describe the way in which I would work with you and enable you to be an independent learner.

Personal Description:
Hi, I'm Josh from Surrey, England. I'm 21 and just finishing my second year at Oxford Brookes university, studying Sport and Exercise Science - no, it's not just catching a tennis ball for a First! I consider mysef a very easy person to get along with and have a lot of experience dealing with those younger than myself, having been a school prefect in the past as well as a mentor to younger kids in boarding school. Aside from that, I have a full time job as an older brother who constantly lends my brother a hand and sorts out his problems (he's 2 years younger than me). I also have a 4 year old sister who I've been teaching to read, write and draw. Being the eldest of the 3 of us, I have acquired a very patient nature and an understanding of others' needs and difficulties, which I feel will help a lot with teaching younger students to learn.

Teaching Experience:

I have a younger brother! This has given me an unbelievable amount of teaching experience, from helping him with his homework when we were younger to coaching him through essays, presentations, interviews and exams now that we are both at university studying similar subjects.

Tutoring Approach:

As stated previously, I do not have any specific 'tutor' experience, although I would consider myself more than capable of teaching students of any age having been a big brother for almost 19 years and counting. What I will say is that if I have learnt to be patient with my siblings, then I will have never-ending patience with those who aren't my family. I will not be a strict tutor as I have found from my own personal experience that developing a friendly relationship is key to helping others learn. Having said that, I will also be completely focussed on the learning task at hand and will produce results in your children as I have managed to do with my own siblings and peers.
