Personal Description:
I have a life-long love of English in general and of Shakespeare in particular, and have always enjoyed communicating that enthusiasm to other people, helping them to develop understanding, confidence, appreciation and a love of language. I have an MA degree in English from Cambridge University and am an IGCSE examiner for the Cambridge International Examinations Board.

My early background in retail management, several years at director level in international advertising, then thirty years as a teacher, with theatre running as a constant thread throughout my life, all combine to make me a particularly effective communicator.

As well as offering private tuition, I also run school drama workshops, direct plays, and work as a freelance writer/editor and voice-over. I have been involved in over fifty theatrical productions - acting or directing - as well as giving regular readings and public presentations.

Having lived and worked professionally for several years in France, I am fluent in French and can offer coaching in French literature and language.

"Simon is the complete professional, directing and managing large-scale productions, nurturing emerging talent, and running a very successful education programme, as well as being an inspirational teacher himself." (Arnold D. - former colleague)

PLEASE NOTE: I am now largely unavailable until mid-July 2017 but do get in touch in case we can discuss possibilities.

Teaching Experience:

I have been a Head of English and Drama at independent schools for over twenty-five years, and am regarded as a charismatic and inspirational teacher. I have many years' experience of Drama in general and Shakespeare in particular on and off stage (studying, teaching, acting and directing).

"Every pupil has selective memories of their teachers. Every past pupil I ever meet selects Simon as their most memorable teacher. They remember his effervescence in the classroom, his delight in their achievements and his encyclopaedic knowledge of Shakespeare." (Tim R. - colleague since 1987)

"Simon was simply a brilliant Head of Department, being that rare combination of high academic and able, articulate communicator. His subject knowledge is unmatched in all my teaching experience, especially of Shakespeare's works, and his inspired teaching produced enthusiastic, successful pupils during his twenty years." (Kay C. - colleague since 1998)

Tutoring Approach:

Need to gain more confidence with spoken or written language? Find Shakespeare hard to cope with, or poetry difficult to understand? Wish to develop your creative writing ability? Need to practise interview technique and improve presentation skills?

I can help. I give coaching in drama, literary analysis and practical criticism, particularly of poetry, and I specialise in teaching Shakespeare. In addition, my earlier background in advertising and marketing is particularly useful in helping students develop their interview technique and presentation skills.

If distance is a problem, I am happy to offer on-line tuition, such as via Skype.

(For adults wishing to learn more about Shakespeare or to understand and appreciate poetic technique, I am happy to undertake small groups - please enquire about special rates.)

"Simon is an inspirational teacher of English Language, Literature and of Drama. His ability to engage and motivate pupils is of the highest order as is his pursuit of excellence in all that he does, both within the classroom situation and in workshops. All of this is well reflected in the results he has achieved, in particular with both academic English and Drama scholarship candidates over his years in post." (Dr Gerry H.)

Personal Description:
I am a bubbly, outgoing person who loves teaching.
I was made redundant from my role on the Crime and Disorder Partnership where I was challenged to proactively tackle crime in the area.
I then decided to persue my career as a private tutor and teacher, having done it as a hobby for 3 years and found I have a passion for this field, this is now my sixth year of tutoring and have had lots of successes and am proud of all my tutees; past and present.
I can sometimes travel to you if required but prefer if I can tutor from my home.
I am available evenings and daytime and will allow single lessons or block bookings.

Teaching Experience:

I currently teach maths in a secondary school and previously taught functional skills IT to level 1 and 2
I have 2 years experience in the Public Sector working with young people and adults tackling crime and disorder through engagement and educational projects.
I have previously tutored many children to GCSE Maths and can provide references if required

Tutoring Approach:

I treat each child as an individual and relish the challenge of helping each boy or girl achieve their targets. I have an excellent rapport with children and all those I teach feel that I am very approachable, easy to talk to, kind and caring. I try to make learning fun.
I can provide one off sessions to tackle problem areas or intense revision help.

Personal Description:
My name is George, I am twenty-one years old and am currently a pre-final-year student of French and Spanish (BA) at the University of Southampton (I will begin final year in September 2014). My level of competence is higher in Spanish, due to my having spent the last nine months living in Spain on the 3rd Year Erasmus Exchange, a compulsory part of my degree. My written and spoken competency in Spanish is high (firm C1 level of the Common European Framework of Reference). In French it is slightly lower, but still of professional standard in writing - last semester I achieved a firm passing mark in a final-year medical, judicial and computational Spanish-to-French and French-to-Spanish translation module at the Universidad de Alicante, in which I was the only student who wasn't a native speaker of either of the languages. As for my Spanish, I have also spent the last six months living with my Spanish girlfriend, who doesn't speak English. She is very well-spoken and I have adopted her style of speech during my time here.

I have a total of ten GCSEs all with grades A*-B, one AS level grade B in Computer Science and three A-grade A levels in Spanish, French and Economics. All of these were achieved during my time at The King's School, Chester (2004-2011).

I enjoy relaxing with my friends, many kinds of music, videogaming and following the world of rowing - I am a competent coxswain for the University rowing club, a sport I took up while at King's. I am generally a relaxed kind of guy to be around, easy to get on with, and pride myself in my ability to "take things easy" and not get stressed.

While living at home with my parents this summer I will have my car and am willing to travel reasonable distances to tutor.

Teaching Experience:

I have no previous teaching experience as such, short of helping my younger brothers pass their GCSE maths. When I understand something well I have no difficulty explaining it to others in a clear manner. I don't know whether it counts in my favour, but I also managed to teach my middle-aged co-workers at my old job in retail how to use the new digital till system - a task far harder than it sounds!

Tutoring Approach:

I have a relaxed and non-pressuried style of teaching, and will be able to help the student feel at ease. I do not have access to any teaching material unavailable to the public online, so would need the student to have papers/worksheets/textbooks etc from school for us to work on/go through together, or any problems they may be encountering in their minds for us to resolve. I would not call myself an academic, but my methods have enabled me to get this far with my languages and I would be more than happy to help others find a way to overcome any issues they may have with language learning.

Personal Description:
My passion for teaching started in 2008, having qualified as a teacher at University in Madrid. After a pedagogic practice in an Secondary Bilingual School I moved to France, where I have recently graduated in French and Spanish Linguistics.

Last year I finished a master's degree in French Applied Language in the Sorbonne University and the Paris Trade Chamber, where I trained in didactics of Specific French (business, scientific, hotel trade, etc).

I'm a very enthusiastic teacher, able to find the talent hidden in every student.

Teaching Experience:

My teaching experience includes two years as a Modern Foreign Language teacher with Learnissimo, training individual from different sectors (enterprises as Danone, Tompress), three years in Primary and Secondary schools and a six months internship in the French Institute in Madrid.

Tutoring Approach:

My teaching method for is based on tasks and the PPP paradigm (presenting a subject, practicing by repetition, matching or filling and producing in the context of a particular task). This approach allows the students to learn by practicing in their real communication situations and to progress in a very short time!

The type of materials I use are generally design by myself, using authentic documents as reports, conversation recordings, emails, hand outs and I also use general linguistics and grammar manuals and essays to support my research

Using a task-based approach, you will be focusing in particular missions and I will give you the tools to accomplish them and I will be designing a individualized programme from your personal or professional targets.

Basically, this is a very practical methodology based on learning by doing.

Personal Description:
Cambridge-educated tutor | Tuition at KS3, GCSE and A-Level | Support for students applying to Oxford and Cambridge

I have a degree in English from Queens` College, Cambridge, and A-Levels in German, Spanish, English Literature and Drama.

I tutor in:
English literature and language at A-Level, GCSE and KS3
English as a foreign language (to any level)
German and Spanish for beginners/KS3.

I also offer support to students applying to Oxford and Cambridge.

Teaching Experience:

I am experienced in teaching people of all ages on a range of different subjects.

Tutoring Approach:

Understanding the needs of the student is my first priority. Everyone is different and has to come at their thoughts and studies in a way which suits them.

I never dictate answers but look to give students the means and confidence to get there themselves. It`s my job to explain concepts, help tackle and understand course texts, create tailored handouts, give guidance in structuring essays and generally offer support wherever I can.

I make constant reference to course specifications to ensure that material covered is relevant and that course requirements are met: students should write essays and enter the exam hall knowing they have the tools to do well.

I also think it's important for students to discuss and develop their ideas in a way which genuinely inspires and engages them in the subject - the basis of the Oxbridge tutorial system.

Given the right focus, guidance and encouragement, I genuinely believe it is possible for any student to do excellently.

Subjects

I went through the GCSE and A-Level courses and know what it takes to do excellently in those exams. The subjects I list are in the traditional qualifications, but I am happy to tailor tuition to other courses, too.

Personal Description:
Hi,
My name is Andrew, I am in my early 50's and taught in private schools for 15 years. I then left education for change of lifestyle and other personal reasons. I have been married for over 20 years and have 2 daughters 23 and 21. I am a committed christian and as such the integrity of the teacher student relationship is very important to me; I would always go the extra mile to see that the student achieves their aims.

I have a current DBS. Loads of references available from Senior teachers and Deputy Headmasters past and present. (Present Headmasters are not the Heads for which I worked).

Teaching Experience:

Repton Prep School 1992 - 2006, Maths, ICT to year 8. Head of ICT.

Manor House School 2006-2007, Maths and ICT to GCSE. Head of ICT.

Private tutor, 1 year, A level, GCSE and Y6 SAT's.

I have also coached football, hockey and cricket so I have a solid foundation in motivating students.

Tutoring Approach:

Motivational, inspirational, encouragement. All things are possible with a good attitude. A can do approach. I do NOT subscribe to the "we don't do it like that mentality" , if there is a better way of doing something then I'm positive about new methods.
For example, when my daughters were learning their tables I wrote my own simple spreadsheet to enable tables practice on a table by table random basis. This is a completely unashamedly a drill system that produces results. Easily possible to learn all tables to 12 within a month if sufficient time is invested, it is also an enjoyable process that 99% of the children that I taught enjoyed, I used the spreadsheet extensively in the schools at which I taught. Infinitely extendable for the brightest to 13, 14, 15 20x tables; likewise can be simplified to 2x and 3x for those that need more time. Also programmable to practise number bonds with any number of digits.

I have also developed the spreadsheet to enable learning of vocabulaire francais.

If a student would like to try tutoring on line using Skype for example then I am quite willing to try this.

Personal Description:
As a child, I learned by being told, by beatings, shaming and a strict examination system. As you can imagine I didn't learn much that I could later apply to my academic life. As a result, I became an inveterate learner, always interested in learning the next thing. At one point, the drive to learn was because I didn't see myself as being good enough. Later on, that drive became an interest in discovering my own abilities as well as about helping others. I have now learned so much about how not to teach that I have gained good insight into how learning happens. I am keen to ensure all my learners learn how to learn and understand how to apply what they discover.

Teaching Experience:

My background is in teaching, training and facilitation. I have over 25 years experience of teaching in different forms having worked within primary, secondary and further education settings. I am an NVQ / TAQA assessor and trained and assessed Parenting Practitioners and other candidates up to Level 5 in Health & Social Care. I have specialist skills in Personal Effectiveness subjects such as Report Writing, Speed Reading, Presentation Skills.

Tutoring Approach:

Being a private tutor used to be the preserve of only those with the highest qualifications and the greatest experience. Now all that's changed.

However good a tutor is, the learner needs to be astute in order know if the tutor is a good match for her / him. Importantly, making the right choice can be complex.
Here are three tips to help you decide if I am or someone else is right for you. The following tips describe how I teach and how I will enable you to be an independent learner.

1. Look for a tutor who can teach you how to learn
Here's a funny thing… learners study a subject, sometimes for months and years and can come away with no long-term memory of the underpinning principles of the subject. As disturbing, they have no ongoing understanding of the subject. They are unable to apply what they tried to learn. This is easily resolved by clearing up past issues with learning. In Applied Scholastics it is now well known that if as a learner, you are helped to do so, you can learn any subject. This is central to how I teach.

2. Look for tutors who understand the main barriers to learning and can help you overcome them
There are three main barriers to study. They relate to confusion over an idea, missing out critical steps and having unclear ideas about the subject under study. Gaining a day to day facility with overcoming those barriers is key to effective and efficient study. I use these methods to help my own reading and study. I will introduce them to you so that you can use them too.

3. Look for tutors who can help you find the information you need so that you keep expanding your own understanding of the subject

Sometimes, a learner during a course of study will find that s/he wants to give up. Have you ever experienced this? Whenever that happens it is because there is something - an idea, a symbol, a form of punctuation, the use of a word, or something else - that you did not understand. Without the proper factual information on this and without the correct knowledge of why and how this happens, the learner will struggle. Without knowing what remedies to apply, the learner will give up.

When you study, you are investing time and energy. In this case, money too. If you want to discover more about how you learn, what your barriers to study are and how to understand more, you will benefit from being an independent learner. That will repay your investment.

Those three critical points should help you decide if I could be right for you. They briefly describe the way in which I would work with you and enable you to be an independent learner.

Personal Description:
I hold a Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and have been a teacher for more than eight years, ever since I graduated from University. I have a Bachelor's degree in English and Spanish, as well as a Master's degree in translation studies (English). I love being a teacher, as I believe that this is a profession that teaches all the professions in the world. I would go the extra mile for my students, always ready to do research, use innovative approaches and high-quality materials to help them achieve and make learning an enjoyable experience.
My students regard me as a positive, open-minded and creative teacher, who is always friendly, helpful and well-prepared.

Teaching Experience:

I have worked with a wide variety of learners, including primary, secondary students and adults. I mainly taught English as a second language and I have occasionally taught Spanish. I have a keen eye for detail and I enjoy teaching grammar, vocabulary and essay writing.
I have prepared students to pass their Cambridge exams (FCE, CAE, CPE, IELTS) and have attended numerous training courses and conferences to develop my teaching skills and liaise with other professionals in the field.
I currently teach trainers and teachers, helping them become qualified and complete their Diploma in Education and Training (Level 5). I have designed the course from scratch, using a variety of techniques and resources.

Tutoring Approach:

I use a variety of teaching methods and take into account learners' preferences when I design my lessons. I always go for a differentiated approach when I teach groups of learners and I am always eager to be as inclusive as possible in my approach. This entails using a wide range of resources - technology, games, projects and assessment types - initial, formative, summative, ipsative.
I Iove one-to-one sessions - focusing my attention on one learner will help me detect the gaps in his/her knowledge better and facilitate overcoming any barriers.
I like to design my own handouts. However, when I use books, I try to select the best and most up-to-date materials possible.

I believe in creating a safe and welcoming learning environment for students in order to enable development of knowledge and skills in a relaxed manner. Much emphasis is placed on confidence building through gradual skill development and nuturing of individual artistic style and voice. I am a big believer in tailored learning and am happy to work closely with students in order to help with improvement of very specific skills.

I am a very practical and techniques based art tutor, therefore if you are looking for help with the improvement of drawing skills and how to achieve well composed finished paintings, I can help.

Personal Description:
I am an enthusiastic and approachable teacher and tutor who has moved out of full time Science teaching to develop other interests but still wishes to help individuals meet their educational needs and goals. I have been tutoring on and off for over 25 years, been a full time teacher for about 5 years and also had a career in the NHS as a medical Physicist at three London teaching hospitals.

I enjoy photography and digital art, walking and DIY.

Teaching Experience:

I have been teaching in one capacity of other since 1990 in the NHS and at University College London. This involved teaching radiographers and post graduate students.
My tutoring experience runs from around the same time with GCSE and A level students

I completed my PGCE at Sussex University in 2010 and have been working as a secondary school Science teacher since then.

Tutoring Approach:

I like to understand the strengths and weakness of the student and customise a plan for how to achieve their goals using a 'blended' approach to help overcome areas of uncertainty or lack of confidence. This includes the individual's learning style and their approach to education. Where relevant I like to use visual and digital resources to help with learning and to secure understanding and also to help with difficult topic areas and homework tasks in the current school curriculum.

Personal Description:
I am a Senior Lecturer in law at a London-based university. I have more than 3 years of experience delivering lectures and seminars, as well as preparing and marking assessments, which means that I know exactly how to support you to improve your legal skills (and your marks!).

I am passionate about working with students individually and supporting them through their university journey, which is why I decided to work as a private tutor. I work with a limited number of students only, depending on my availability, but I would love to have a chat with you to figure out how I can support you.

Teaching Experience:

HOW I CAN HELP YOU:

STUDY TECHNIQUES: I regularly work with 1st year LLB students, helping them to understand how they should study in order to receive excellent marks and continue improving their skills.

COURSEWORK/ASSIGNMENT SUPPORT: I can help you to understand the requirements of your coursework, and guide you through the process of structuring your essay, finding the right resources and analysing the law.

EXAM TECHNIQUE: Studying for exams can be quite stressful, especially if you don't know how to approach it. I will be happy to go with you through your mock exam paper, and explain how you should structure your exam answers and revise for the exam. I can even go over your mock exam answers and give you detailed feedback!

DISSERTATION SUPPORT: Some of the modules require you to complete a longer essay, known as a dissertation. There are slightly different rules that apply to writing those, and it's always good to have some external support throughout the writing process.

If you would like a flavour of what my teaching is like and how I explain different concepts in law, feel free to check out the Guidebook I authored: "Student`s Guide to Law: Developing a Legal Argument", which you can easily find in the Amazon Kindle library.

AREAS OF EXPERTISE:

Here are the areas of law in which I currently tutor:

- Company law
- Commercial law
- Business law
- Family law
- Employment law
- Contract law / Obligations
- EU law
- Human rights law
- Public and administrative law
- English legal system
- Medical law and ethics
- Practical legal skills
- Careers support

I am also happy to explore other areas of law and expand my expertise, so if the area with which you need help is not on the list - please feel free to still approach me!

AVAILABILITY:

I am currently available for online Skype sessions only. I can do sessions during weekdays both during the day and in the evenings, and occasionally over the weekends too, subject to other commitments.

I have been teaching students online for more than 5 years now, and I use a professional equipment to make sure the sessions run smoothly. I know exactly how to arrange the sessions so that the students really benefit from them. I also have access to a wide range of online resources which I use during the sessions.

Online sessions are so much more beneficial to the students than traditional sessions! For starters, you are in the comfort of your own home which is a quiet environment with no external distractions. This means that you can focus entirely on the session and make the most of the full hour.

You can also start working on your assignment, mock exam answer or editing your lecture notes immediately after the session ends, when you still have in your head all the information that we discussed during the session.

And I won`t even mention all the time you save by not travelling to the session and back home!

INTERESTED IN BOOKING A SESSION? HERE ARE JUST A FEW GROUND RULES...

1. I tend to be quite busy, especially around coursework submission and exam revision times, so make sure you book your session in advance. I will rarely be available for a session if you will want it scheduled for the day after.

2. So that you can benefit from the session the most, I will need to prepare for it. For that, I will need you to send me the topic of your coursework (if you need support with your coursework), the corresponding lecture slides, your module outline and the details of the recommended textbook. You should be able to send these to me at least two days in advance of the session.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe that private tutoring should be about me helping you to develop the skills that you need to develop within the shortest possible time (usually 3-6 sessions), rather than ongoing support.

Private support is pricey, especially if you're on a student budget, and so when you come to me we will make sure that there is a plan in place, and you know what type of progress you can expect within a short period of time.

My aim is always to provide you with as much information as I can so that you get to improve your skills fast!
