-
Former Head of Chemistry, Head of Science, Senior Team Management Leader and A-level Chemistry Teacher with over 30 years teaching in independent and local authority schools. Now an experienced and highly successful A-level Chemistry Tutor and IB Chemistry Tutor.

Tutoring is flexible according to needs with effective problem solving, consolidation and examination training all on offer. His experience as an examiner, question writer and editor enables him to help students understand how papers are set and marked, what examination boards are looking for, how to revise more efficiently, and how to achieve better results. Students seeking to achieve higher grades e.g. for entry to medical school, should find this tuition particularly helpful.

Tuition is mostly available in time slots from 1.30pm (or 2pm) to 3.30pm and from 4pm (or 4.30pm) to 6pm on Mondays to Thursdays. Tutoring for two or three students together is also possible. Tuition can be arranged at the student's home, a library, another suitable venue, or online.

Students from Tonbridge, Sevenoaks, Orpington, Cranbrook, Tenterden, Ashford, the Medway Towns and Gravesend may choose to travel in to Maidstone for tuition.

Online tuition is convenient, in the comfort of your own home, easy to fit into a tight schedule and not much different from personal tuition.

Lessons may be fortnightly, three weekly, weekly, monthly, half termly, or even just occasionally. Some prefer to book a number of tutoring sessions during school holidays when they have more availability. Ongoing support is available to students between sessions.

I am a highly regarded and successful tutor who has good relationships with his pupils.

His qualifications:
BSc (Hons) Chemistry, St Andrews University,
PhD Chemistry, St Andrews University,
PGCE in Chemistry and Mathematics.

Students within a five mile radius of Maidstone or those who can travel in are preferred.

Fees:
120 for each two hour time slot for individual students.
80 each for 2 or 3 students together.

Length of tuition sessions:
Tuition sessions can be less than two hours for 120 because of distance, travel, timing, or other circumstances.
Maximum of two hours:
- for local Maidstone students and for those who can travel into the Maidstone area for tuition.
Maximum of one and a half hours:
- for students more than 6 miles away, for students who cannot fit their session into a time slot, for sessions starting at 4.30pm, and for all online sessions.
Maximum of one hour:
- for students more that 15 to 18 miles away, and for those who cannot fit their sessions into a time slot.

Comments from Parents and Students (2009 to the present time):

AQA Chemistry A-level:
"C.R. was delighted to get an A grade. What would we have done without your help? Thank you so much." Mrs A.R.

Edexcel A-level Chemistry:
"Thank you, I got an A, I`m going to Cambridge." C.O. "I.R. gained a high B grade for the AS module, only a few marks short of an A which I think is an excellent jump from the E grade. I know that she benefited enormously from your tuition. Thank you again." Mrs C.R.

IB Chemistry:
"I got a level 7. Thank you for all your help. Thank you." M.V.
"G.W. achieved a level 6 in her Chemistry exam!! She is absolutely delighted, as we all are. My daughter found the sessions invaluable and she very much enjoyed your method of tutoring. Without your help, encouragement and clear direction I do not think she would have the Chemistry result she has today. She has accepted a place at the Royal Vetenary College. We would all like to thank you very much indeed for the tutoring sessions. With our very best wishes and sincere thanks for your help and support." Mrs J.W.
"I got a level 6. Thank you so much, obviously I could not have done it without your help." M.K. "I got a level 6 and I've been accepted to study biology. I really appreciated those lessons, thank you for all your help." S.R.

OCR A Chemistry A-level:
"I got an A so I am off to study medicine! Thank you for all your help! T.K." "I was at a low E grade. I found working with you on exam technique was particularly helpful, as well as the way you explained complex ideas simply so they were easy to understand. I was able to apply the exam techniques you taught me in my other subjects which helped to improve my grades across the board. Without doubt I would not have achieved the A grade without your help. My A levels went better than expected, with A*AAA. I`ll be moving to medical school. Thank you again, many thanks, R.W."

OCR B (Salters) Chemistry:
"E.R. got an A in and got into med school. Your revision course really helped. Thank you so much. Mrs A.R." "G.R. got his "A" and is off to study Chemical Engineering. Thank you very much for all your help - it was much appreciated." Mrs E.R. "I got a C, 67%, which I`m very happy with as it was a subject I really struggled with. Once again thanks for your help. R.K." "I got an A which meant I got accepted to study at King`s College London. Thank you for all your help. Thanks again, G.P." "I really can't thank you enough for all your help over the past two years. You have given me so much confidence in my ability to do chemistry and now I know I can get the grades." T.S.

University first year exam resits:
"I had my UCL referral interview last Tuesday, and this week I found out that I have passed. Thank you so much for all of your help. Thanks again, J.E." "E.N. passed his Oxford University Chemistry first year exam resit! Phew what a relief! He got 63% which is 2. 1 level which he is pleased with. I can`t thank you enough for all you did. Thank you." J.N.

Online tuition:
"Online tuition worked well and was easy to fit into a tight schedule." L.R. "I found the online tuition to be both convenient and incredibly helpful! I'm amazed how well it worked." T.S. "I liked online tuition because it was in the comfort of my room and I had everything I needed with me. You could also send documents which was useful and I could talk to you. It doesn't seem much different in terms of what we get done as a normal face to face session." H.K.

GCSE:
"I just wanted to let you know that I got an A in my Chemistry. Thank you very much for all the help you gave me, I found it very useful! I also got an A in Physics and an A* in Biology." OK.

Personal Description:
I am an optimistic and encouraging tutor. Teaching is my passion and I work hard to maximise my student's learning potential. I am a doctorate in science and has experience in varied subjects.

Teaching Experience:

I taught Maths, verbal and non-verbal reasoning for 11+ entrance exams. I teach KS2, KS3 (Maths, Science), GCSE and A-level (Maths, Physics and Chemistry). I advised students up to the University level, but equally enjoy tutoring students at all levels.

Tutoring Approach:

I conduct initial assessment to determine the student's current grades and work in co-relation with their school work. I provide relevant simple and practical examples to create natural interest in the subject. I believe that the best way of teaching is to engage student in a dialogue. I assess the student's performance periodically; thereby checking the progress to consolidate the student's understanding of the subject.

I have studied a broad range of subjects during my Bachelor's degree (English and Classics, RHUL) and Master's (Comparative Art and Archaeology with Law, UCL). My main interests lie in English literature of the Victorian and Medieval periods, Fin de Siecle Art and Theory and Archaeology.

Aside from my studies I play a lot of sport (lacrosse, rugby and athletics) and have captained teams at national and regional level. Due to my teaching experience (see below) I am comfortable working with children through to adults on a broad range of subjects.

I am dedicated to providing all my students with the time they need to improve, thus will only take a certain amount of students at a time. At the moment, I have space for 2 A-level students and 2 more GCSE students

Tutoring Approach:

Academic experience: I have worked in private tutoring, state and private schools, university departments and know how examiners mark and what they expect. I have worked for 2 prestigious Universities and am adept at entrance documents and applications. In addition, one needs to be constantly aware of the changing curricula, mark schemes, and student specifications, knowledge and understanding of which can guarantee a 95%+ grade.

Encouragement: As a sports captain, Head of Year prefect and Global Citizenship Mentor (UCL) I realise the need for a pupil's confidence to be built up before they can achieve better. In my opinion a pupil is never failing, they can just achieve more.

Planning: It is essential for us to have an organised lesson plan, and plan for our future sessions so we can map where we should be heading and what we have achieved. Many students suffer from poor organisation which, if remedied, would immediately proffer far better results.

Education: During my past 8 years of college, undergraduate and graduate university I have been educated in a host of valuable disciplines that help interest and inspire any student.

Personal Description:
I am currently working full time in market research agency as a project manager around London Bridge area.

I graduated from University of Sussex (MSc Merit, 2011-2012), and I studied Sociology with a minor in Foreign Languages and Applied Linguistics for bachelor degree. I had three years experience in tutoring.

I am good at communicating with children as I joined social service society in the university, in which we held several summer and winter camps for children in primary schools. During the time I designed games in which learning is embedded in playing.

I am very patient, understanding, affirming and trustworthy. I have good time control and always well-prepared before every tutoring session.

Teaching Experience:

I had been an English tutor for more than three years in Taiwan, students aged from 9 to 16. Most of the parents ask me to teach all subjects rather than English only as I got along with students very well and they improved significantly in coursework after the tutoring.

I have taught my British friends Mandarin for nearly 1 year in the UK, and I know very well about the difficulties of the foreigner in learning Mandarin Chinese.

Tutoring Approach:

* Be their friend: I believe to become students' friend is one of the very first and important step to start with successfully tutoring. Students would be willing to share more (e.g. their questions in learning) and be more confident to speak more if I am just like their friends.

* Learning while playing: I am good at invent new games tailored to every student. I am able to make the learning process both effective and enjoyable by playing games.

* Approachable but strict: I monitor students' progression carefully. I always keep close track with students' performance and urge them to the best improvement.

* Bespoke teaching: I am sensitive to students' personalities and I always adjust my teaching style quickly to suit students' needs. Every student is unique and all of them worth some efforts to discover the best teaching for them.

Personal Description:
I have been teaching most of my working life. However, last year was entirely spent in fulltime education. I have Just finished a Masters degree specialising in Shakespeare and wish to make a return to teaching.

Teaching Experience:

I have been teaching for roughly 8 years now. I have taught English as a foreign language in Japan for a major language school. I worked as a private tutor in Japan and Australia teaching ESL. In Australia, I also worked with an import company improving the business English of their staff. I have taught Exercise Physiology both at University level for ANU in Sydney, and in an adult education environment. I have ample experience in sport coaching, having coached school children and university students in a variety of sports. I have taught on three continents, taught everyone from children as young as 1 to retirees. I have experience in a variety of subjects and people from various backgrounds. I am used to teaching individuals and groups.

Tutoring Approach:

People have different strengths and weaknesses. Both these need to be adequately construed before any teaching method can be finalised. Usually, I would try to ascertain the students strengths, to facilitate learning, and weaknesses, to identify areas of improvement. It is important to interpret these factors according to the framework of curriculum / examiner requirements. I endeavour to make my sessions fun for students. I try to remind myself that their tutoring sessions are often at the end of a long days work. This makes patience very important.

Personal Description:
Hello there, I am Tina. I am a native mandarin speaker from China and have over 3 years teaching experience.

I was awarded `Outstanding Trainee of 2012 Confucius Institute Chinese Teacher training`.

My aim is to give fun, effective and personally tailored mandarin lessons to my students.

**For children, We are learning while playing games, singing, drawing and doing different sorts of activities. We make simple Chinese food, taste it and say it. We make our unique decorations, sing songs and dance around. We trace & write Chinese characters, hang them around the house. We have lots of fun while we progress in our mandarin learning.

**For GCSE or A-level students, We not only master the textbooks(listening, speaking, reading and writing), we also explore the beautiful eastern culture, study authentic Chinese stories and make our own stories. We practise past papers and make sure the preparation is done thoroughly and well. Meanwhile, we always have fun.

**For adult students, I tailor my tutoring to their individual needs and requirements,
+ looking to impressing your Chinese girlfriend's family;
+ making Chinese friends;
+ building a rapport with your Chinese business partners;
+ having a holiday in China;
+ studying or working there,
We will find the best way for you to learn. I encourage my adult students communicate with the language they have learnt and help them build up their confidence. We do lots of role-play based on real life situations. My students learn to talk confidently and build up their vocabulary steadily on the way.

Tips:
1. For travelling to China, you should learn travelling topics as well as daily small talks, which will helps you have a easier trip and make friends on your unforgeable journey. ++Numbers is the No.1 thing to learn.++
2. For making friends or impressing someone, don't forget to learn a couple of Chinese songs, which will definitely earn their favour. We have Karaoke at every corner of China.
3. For exam participants, practising past papers is a short-cut to your success.
4. For Mums, Children before aged 13, they have an area in their brain which help them learn languages as mother tongue and they don't translate the language, while after 13, that area will close and it becomes a lot harder to learn foreign languages.
5. Learning languages never be effortless, however, it can be easy and enjoyable if you find the right way.

I am available on Monday to Thursday daytime and some evenings; but my available time is changing, please don`t hesitate to drop me a line if you are interested in learning Mandarin. I am looking forward to hearing from you.

Personal Description:
I have moved to North Devon in the last year and am setting up a Tutoring Business alongside training as a Psychotherapist. I have worked with children for 14 years and have a lot of experience with them and very much enjoy teaching them. The feedback I have had so far is that their child feels much more confident that then builds a good foundation for developing their learning skills.

Teaching Experience:

I have been a Primary School teacher for 9 years.

Tutoring Approach:

Please see above in my "About myself" section.
I work with each child as an individual. As each child is different, they have a unique approach to learning that I am willing to find out and use. I have a relaxed style but we cover a lot in the time we have and I have started to see a change after a few sessions.

Teaching Experience:

Science Buddy for 2 years at school
Summer Camp Leader for 3 years running

Work experience at an Adult Learning Centre

Tutoring Approach:

It has been my experience, both as a tutor and as a student, that the best way to engage with course material is to figure out which styles of learning work best for you. I personally found certain aspects of learning quite challenging during my time in school but by finding the methods that most suited my needs, I was able to maximize my learning potential.

My tutoring style emphasizes collaboration and positive reinforcement in order to produce a friendly learning environment.

From my charity work abroad in Ghana to my role as Deputy Head Girl at my secondary school, I have gained the interpersonal skills necessary to develop productive and compassionate relationships with pupils. Teaching Experience:

I have been a mentor for first year university students to help them settle into student life and guide them through their initial year and help solve any problems they may face.

I have also been a tutor for A-level students at UCL Academy where I supported students with their academia and also provided advice regarding university applications.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe practice makes perfect, and this is the approach I have taken which has resulted in my success.
I would normally teach the concept making sure the student is aware what is being asked and what is being tested. Once the theory has been taught and understood, I would then test this with example questions. After reviewing the answers I would return back to theory to help understand any mistakes made.

I also understand different individuals work in different ways therefore I tailor my approach depending on the tutee.
