Hello! I'm Nicole. I'm a bit of a history and literature geek (and I hope to convert you!!)

I studied History and English at the University of Oxford (Wadham College). I graduated with Double First Class Honours in 2010, and came top in my academic year: no mean feat!

I believe that my excellent grades reflect several important characteristics: my exceptional academic ability, my high academic standards, my mastery of study-skills, and my dedicated and conscientious work ethic. I look to encourage all of these qualities in my students.

More importantly though, my outstanding results are a result of my absolute love for, knowledge of, and commitment to, my subjects. I absolutely love to learn, and aim to help my students to find a similar excitement and passion for their studies!

Teaching Experience:

Over the past few years, I have privately tutored a number of students. My students have come from a diverse age range - spanning from the very young to the much older - and I feel comfortable working with children, teenagers and adults.

I have tutored students in History; English Literature; English Language; reading comprehension; speaking, listening, reading and writing skills; primary level Maths.

I have also tutored 11+ applicants, for which I have a 100% success rate.

I also have experience in mentoring potential Oxbridge applicants, and advising university peers and younger students on study and revision skills.

After graduating, I worked full-time as a Cover Supervisor in a secondary school. That means that I took classes in all subjects across the secondary curriculum, for students ranging from 11 - 16 years of age, and I also supported teaching in A-Level English classes. Seeing up to 150 students in a day was a challenging and rewarding experience in which I was constantly thinking on my feet, and successfully applying my teaching skills to brand new material (in familiar and unfamiliar subjects). This job also gave me the opportunity to observe and work with students of all abilities and learning styles, and to learn how to adapt my teaching style accordingly.

I have worked on a number of projects which involved education, support, or leadership of young people. These have included:

- Working with and supervising over 120 foreign children and teenagers whilst employed by a Cambridge-based language summer school as a programme coordinator and social leader.

- Peer support leader within the APAUSE programme ('Added Power and Understanding in Sex Education') which offered sex education and empowerment lessons for younger teenagers.

- Co-director role in secondary level production of 'Les Miserables' with responsibility for over 100 children and teenagers aged between 11 and 18.

- Co-director role in community theatre production of 'West Side Story' with responsibility for working with approximately 50 children and teenagers.

- Assistant role for GCSE-level 'Speaking and Listening Days' which involved aiding teachers in helping students improve the quality of their English language GCSE assessed work.

Tutoring Approach:

I am passionate about learning - and look to encourage a similar excitement in my students. In History this might be through some particularly fascinating or gruesome details, or in English, through exploring a beautiful line of poetry.

I am very individual-student orientated, so I seek always to establish each individual's aims for tutoring, and then we will work together toward these. For one student, this might be to know how to deconstruct a poem; for another, how to write a good essay.

With some students, I will plan structured lessons, whereas others prefer simply to earmark time with a dedicated tutor, before deciding what to do themselves at the time. Perhaps they will bring their homework, a study-book, or something they are stuck with - whatever the case, I aim always to listen and respond to the needs of each individual student.

With all my students (but especially the younger ones) I am a big believer in making learning FUN! I therefore often design lessons which use a variety of practical learning activities to keep them stimulated, rather than just relying on book-learning. In the past, I've mummified a teddy, conducted a press conference, and taught times-tables via Grandmother's footsteps! I find this to be particularly effective for students who struggle with concentration.

I believe that when offered education through the right methods, everyone is able to maximise their own ability to learn. Having completed a full-time degree and worked in secondary education, I am equipped with plenty of different learning methods. With my students, I therefore look to discover which approaches work well for them, and then to use these to help them master the subject material. This in turn helps students to gain in confidence and self-motivation as they discover their own capacity to learn well.

If students are working toward exams, I first seek to establish what a student feels his or her weaknesses are, and then focus tuition on areas or skills which will help them to plug the gaps or grow in strength and confidence. If more general support is needed, I will combine working with core material with a focus on ensuring that they have a solid grasp of the assessment objectives, question-types, and what the exam will look like, so that they can go into the exam confident and well-prepared. I also find that practice, practice, practice is essential, so we'll often work with past papers.

I seek always to establish clear lesson goals, and to review material learnt several times within each lesson, ensuring that the student feels comfortable with using the material learnt, rather than swamped by facts and lists!

Following education at an ordinary comprehensive school, I graduated with a first-class masters degree from Magdalen College, Oxford. I was awarded a scholarship as an undergraduate for attaining excellent exam results. At school, I achieved the highest possible grade in all subjects I teach, including:

There are two key aspects to achieving in academia: learning techniques to pass exams and having a genuine interest in the subject. I believe that I can help with both.

By ensuring that I am well prepared for each lesson, I aim to simplify parts of the syllabus that the student is finding difficult and if necessary, teach in a number of different ways to aid understanding. I can help produce a revision plan for those students who are taking exams to ensure that all the material is covered in time.

The subjects I teach are fascinating, they just need to be taught in the right way. The school curriculum can appear a little dull at times but I hope that with the experience I have gained in a number of interesting environments, including working with the McLaren F1 team and in running my own electronics business where maths and science were essential, I can bring subjects to life in a way that shows their real value.

One of the great joys of tutoring is that every student is different - I love tailoring my approach to get the best out of every tutee.

I had various other jobs such as listening to children read, sorting out and marking homework and classwork and photocopying work for distribution.

Tutoring Approach:

I work very closely to the curriculum and have an unlimited use of resources for English, Maths and Science at Key Stages 1, 2, 3 & 4 (GCSE). I implement a variety of timed activities to monitor progress and establish focus points. I received my degree from the University of Birmingham (BSc Environmental Science) in 2013 achieving a 2.1 classification. In 2014-15 I studied MSc Surveying and Land Environmental Management at the University of Exeter (Penryn campus).

I am well organised, efficient and take a friendly approach to tutoring - as well as being hard-working and easy to get along with, I am reliable and prefer my lessons to be enjoyable as well as informative. I am a kind person and I do realise that I was once a beginner in this area, while it will not happen overnight, my experience has shown that my clients can fastrack their abilities by the benefit of my methods.
I have just completed an MA Photography in where I undertook a project which was an assertive evaluation on landscape photography, highlighting the factor of scale and the part it plays with both the picture and the viewer.

Using traditional and digital photographic techniques together with specialised optics. my work explored conventional landscapes alongside fragments in extraordinary detail. My work challenged the traditional view that photography is a science or art, demonstrating that it can be both.

Within two years I want to build on my MA Photography and hopefully study for a PhD in this area. I also want to build on my Associate status of The Royal Photographic Society and want to aim for a Fellowship of this organisation within two years by September 2014.

I have made some very good friendships in the area of photography who are of enormous help to me.

Tutoring Approach:

The tutor is the expert in subject knowledge and learning but it is the tutee who has the paramount role in their own education and excelling in their subjects. I firmly believe that the role of a tutor is that of a catalyst and the child's role in their own learning is of greater importance. I aim to guide the tutee to learn in a structured manner that so that the child does not waste their time jumping from topic to topic, randomly browsing a bit here and a bit there, as often happens. To do that, as tutor, I will facilitate their learning on a 1 to 1 basis so that they may gain a deeper and greater depth of knowledge of the subject. I will provide the subject knowledge expertise and transfer my knowledge to the tutee in a manner and at a level that is appropriate to the tutee but pushing them beyond their limits to the next stage. To achieve that grade "A*" a GCSE tutee should be able to understand basic AS Level material. For an A Level tutee to achieve the highest grades at A Level they should be able to cope with University first year material with ease. It is my aim to enable my tutees to achieve these goals.

I will work to improve the child's self esteem, self belief and confidence in their ability to do well. As a trained hypnotherapist I am particularly qualified to boost a child's self-esteem. Once the tutee is confident in their subject knowledge, then we will work on exam techniques and exam practice in order to enable the tutee to ace the exams and significantly improve their grades.

I will work with each tutee on an individual basis and adjust the tuition lessons to their needs. There is no standard one size fits all model with me. Homework will be set to enable the subject matter to be reinforced with some self-learning at home. Exam practice will be key to enable the tutee to become proficient in their exams and achieve the highest grades. Exam technique contributes significantly towards exam success. We will always work to enable the tutee to AIM HIGHER.

I am also able to guide sixth formers with their UCAS applications and personal statements.

At all times parents will be involved with the learning of their child so that they may guide and support their child's education and monitor progress. Parental involvement is also a major factor in the child's success.

For the science lessons my aim is to include as much practical work as is possible, where this is feasible in a tuition setting, keeping safety of the child of paramount importance.

If your child is quiet and shy or is in a mediocre class or is just coasting along or is struggling to achieve the grades required to get into the University course of their choice, whether it is Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacology, Engineering, Computing, Optometry or other science course, then tuition with myself will enable them to boost their grades and give them the advantage that they need. Honest school teachers will tell you that it is the noisy and disruptive pupils that get their attention, whereas the quite shy hardworking pupils tend to get neglected. Busy school teachers just do not have the time or energy to devote to helping their quieter or weaker pupils and it is these pupils that especially benefit from extra personal tuition. On the other hand a brighter pupil may be so far ahead of his or her peers that the teacher is just not able to give them the attention they need. A good tutor will help guide tutees who want to learn to get ahead and avoid becoming disinterested or bored. Why leave it to chance?

It is never too early to start boosting a child's education. For primary school children it is important that they get a good start to their education and do not lag behind. A tuition boost will enable them to get into a better school or a higher stream set so that they do not have to struggle or get left behind when the come to do their GCSE and A Levels.

I also have experience of vocational courses such as the BTEC and Applied Science courses and I am able to provide the additional guidance and support required to ensure that your child achieves Distinctions rather than passes in their assignments. It is not my policy to do the tutee's coursework for them but to help, guide and support their research and provide constructive feedback.

Tutees will be required to complete all assessments and homework on time in advance of the relevant lesson.

Personal Description:
I am a student at the University of Bath and am currently in my third year of a four year course, studying BA French, Italian and European Studies (History, Politics, Culture and Literature of Europe). In compliance with my degree, this year must be spent abroad and so I have just finished my summer employment at a private language summer school in Belgium, working as an English teacher.

I teach French on Twitter, where I have over 16,000 followers and regularly respond to questions and update my page daily with useful phrases, every day speech and more complex language issues.

My passion for learning and teaching languages stems from when I moved to France at the age of 13 with my parents, not one of us spoke a word of the language - other than the vague memories of the beginnings of GCSE, with the only words springing to mind being 'ruler' and 'pencil'. It's really just not ideal when you're actually in the centre of a new culture, and not in a classroom.

I didn't have friends for the first few months there because of the language barrier (it didn't help either that I was home-schooled so it was incredibly hard for me to even meet people!). So I just had to learn the language. In teaching myself it, I know what works, I know the easiest ways to memorise words and phrases, I know what to do and what will be easiest for you.

After three years of living in France, my parents decided to move back to the UK where I continued my language studies at a scholastic level; completing my AS Level and my A2 Level in French, gaining an A in both.

My passion for Italian stems from my father's family being Sicilian. We moved there, also when I was 13, however, sadly we only spent a very brief time there - it was a spontaneous country-hop so we really just were not prepared for the culture shock. Again, none of us spoke the language, so I began teaching myself and then continued again when I came back to the UK to study.

English is my native language and I have taken my A Levels in English Language.

Teaching Experience:

While teaching, my classes would change weekly, so during my stay there I gained the experience of teaching 9-17 year olds, with English levels ranging from absolute beginner, A1 to almost native, C1.

I gained many skills, including, but not exclusive to, classroom management, lesson planning, evaluating language levels at the beginning and end of the stay of the children, meeting parents and giving feedback and of course, teaching full days; my teaching day would even include private one-to-one lessons. I would often deal with situations that required being able to think innovatively, without guidance and under pressure so I have gained a considerable amount of confidence and self-discipline due to my work there and I have improved my time keeping and organisational skills.

I have also been privately tutoring children, from 11 to 14 years old, for over two years now, via Skype. So even if the distance seems too far - teaching via Skype is an option.

I tutored one of my students through her French GCSE and she gained an A*. I was always available to prepare her - even the day before her exams. She only ever felt confident to go into any of the modules (be it speaking or writing).

I really care for the children that I tutor and am proud to say I have been there to help them with all aspects of their schooling, from homework help, to exam preparations, extra work and even life lessons - I'm very personable, patient and overall positive and happy so am always willing to give advice and have really become a friend to my tutees. We've also worked on all subjects, everything from science, to history, to music, to teaching the time and additional mathematics help.

I live in Cumbria and have a range of work experiences to draw on, including researching for the BBC daily survey and the Centre for Social Policy Research and Development. I have also worked as a housemother for children with learning difficulties, as an advocate within the voluntary sector and as an advocacy development worker.

After gaining my PhD, my more recent work has been as an Education lecturer in higher education which has also involved me in a number of research initiatives, tutoring undergraduate and postgraduate students and working on research governance and ethics. I believe education is a right for all people at all levels and that it is best viewed as a lifelong experience.

I am currently a 22 year old student studying Biomedical Science in Brighton. I'm passionate about science and am keen to pass on my knowledge of sciences to younger students in order for them to excel. I earned A's in all my sciences and maths at GCSE, and further qualifications at A Level.

Teaching Experience:

I've been able to help my younger siblings (1, 2 and 14 years younger) with their education, mainly with the sciences but other subjects too. My youngest brother is only 7 so it is important to adapt the way of teaching to fit his understanding.

The last 2 years, I spent half the year tutoring at primary school and GCSE level, where all students went up a grade.

Tutoring Approach:

It is important to vary the language you use depending on the level and age of the student you are working with. It is also very important not to discourage the student, as I feel this does not motivate them. It's important to make them feel good about what they're doing and this will encourage them to do well.
