Personal Description:
I have worked in education all my adult life, and ten years ago embarked upon a freelance career which has enabled me to focus on the kind of work I love, and to spend more time with my family, and do the things I most enjoy.

As an English graduate, my greatest passion is literature. I read a wide range of novels, drama and poetry. Authors I have recently enjoyed include Ian McEwan, Philip Pullman, Helen Dunmore, Kazuo Ishiguro... too many to mention!

I spend a lot of time writing and completed a six month course in novel writing with the Faber Academy on which I was delighted to be offered a place. I have had a number of articles and short stories published, and am working on my first novel. I have a Post-Graduate Diploma in Journalism with the London School of Journalism, and am also qualified in proof-reading and sub-editing.

Teaching Experience:

My first job was teaching English to young speakers of other languages during the summer vacations when I was at University - many years ago!

After I graduated in English I qualified as a teacher. My first full-time post was in a sixth-form college, where I taught English at a variety of levels to A-level and University entrance. After two further full-time teaching posts in a 14-19 secondary school and another sixth-form college, I moved into Adult and Community Education. During much of this time I also took on a number of part-time posts, tutoring English, English to Speakers of other Languages, Creative Writing and General Studies in a university extra-mural department, the Workers Education Association and in a number of prisons. I served on the English A-level set books committee of a national examinations board, and have worked as a part-time examiner.

For the past ten years I have been working as a freelance education consultant, trainer and writer. Much of my education consultancy and training work has involved facilitating and coaching young people and professionals in a variety of contexts and a range of subject areas such as communication skills, business writing skills and writing for the media.

Tutoring Approach:

I offer distance and online tutoring, using Skype, telephone and email. When I am working with students in this way I provide them with extensive and constructive feedback on their written work, enabling them to understand how they can improve their coursework and achieve the skills and confidence necessary to write succinct and relevant essays required for examinations. Many of the students whom I have supported have achieved top grades in GCSEs, A-levels and degrees.

I firmly believe that we only learn effectively when we find the learning experience interesting, relevant and meaningful. My first priority is to endeavour to ensure that students are having that kind of experience! I also believe that learning should be enjoyable and fun. Sometimes, of course, learning is about studying things we are not so interested in just to get through an exam - a means to a hopefully more enjoyable end. In that case I help students to find the most effective ways for them to do just that - and hope that even this might be enjoyable too!

I do not believe that good teaching is about pouring knowledge into students, but is about drawing learning out of them and supporting them to teach themselves. We all have huge areas of strength, skill and wisdom, and I always try to enable students to recognise theirs and to develop them to their fullest potential.

PLEASE NOTE THAT I WILL NOT WRITE STUDENTS' ESSAYS FOR THEM, WHICH I HAVE SOMETIMES BEEN ASKED TO DO!

Personal Description:
I charge £30 per hour or £50 for a 2-hour slot. I specialise in maths at A/AS level and degree level. I can tutor either in my house or elsewhere in the area.

I have a first class maths degree and a maths PhD from the University of St Andrews. I also have A* grades in GCSE maths and additional maths and A grades in A level maths and further maths.

Teaching Experience:

While studying for my doctorate I tutored small groups and one-to-one for a number of undergraduate courses. This focussed on question practice following lecture material, and included further discussion and explanation of the theory.

Since leaving university I have tutored A/AS level and degree level maths. This has covered pure maths, applied maths and statistics. This has included a range of exam boards, including Edexcel, AQA and OCR, and my tutees have had excellent success rates in their exams.

Tutoring Approach:

I have a flexible approach to tutoring and am keen to be guided by the tutee's aims and learning style.

If you are aiming for specific exams then the exam syllabus and practice of all past paper questions would be the main focus, as this is crucial for success. If you are struggling with certain areas of the theory then I would spend time in further explanation and discussion, clarifying the material and ensuring that you have a solid basis of knowledge to apply in examinations.

I am an Italian PhD student at University College London. My field of interest is Photonics, I do research at the Electronic Engineering Dept to study the physics of nanomaterials. I have a strong background in scientific subjects. I love teaching ITALIAN and I consider my self a good teacher, patient and extremely motivated.

Teaching Experience:

I have been successfully teaching maths to italian students for many years. I am now tutoring undergraduate students at UCL and people who want to learn my beautiful language, Italian!

Tutoring Approach:

My approach to teaching is based on the assessment of learning needs and difficulties students can encounter during their studies. Indeed my lessons are not only customized accordingly to the starting level but also tailored to help students define their problems. I put people at ease to make them think independently and with no fear of failure. Everybody can succeed in learning a subject, it is a matter of motivation and commitment. My job will also aimed to keep the student focused and motivated. Challenging tasks and periodic assessment of the results I think can also help the student achieve his goals.

Personal Description:
I am a recent Oxford Maths graduate, with an MMath degree. I have received a Junior Mathematical Prize to recognise my "excellent performance in the examination". My own mathematical education began early and I have experienced a lot of different forms of tuition, including one-to-one tutorials, summer schools, correspondence school. I have a deep knowledge of the subject and ways to teach it. At the moment I am a PhD student at Imperial College, London.

Teaching Experience:

Diverse teaching experience, from GCSE to university degree levels. I also have experience in different forms of tutoring: one-to-one, correspondence, online. Testimonial from a parent to a team of tutors I was a part of: " I must thank you and your great team for providing crucial learning support when my children need it. Your Tutors have been absolutely super, and as a parent, it is really gratifying when you get tutors who really care about the children they teach."

Tutoring Approach:

Of course, my approach to tutoring is student-based, but broadly I am trying to identify the areas that are problematic and then find a way(e.g. a metaphor) that will work for a particular student. After one or two tutorials a program of study is formed, which is flexible enough to allow for variations. As I have a degree in Mathematics, I know the reason for definitions and results in Maths and I can be confident that I will be able to answer a student's questions. This is very important, in my opinion. Knowing the reason why things work makes studying much easier and much more enjoyable. So instead of making a student to memorize numerous memorization tricks, I lead him patiently to understanding a particular topic and at some moments let him explore it himself.

Personal Description:
I have moved to North Devon in the last year and am setting up a Tutoring Business alongside training as a Psychotherapist. I have worked with children for 14 years and have a lot of experience with them and very much enjoy teaching them. The feedback I have had so far is that their child feels much more confident that then builds a good foundation for developing their learning skills.

Teaching Experience:

I have been a Primary School teacher for 9 years.

Tutoring Approach:

Please see above in my "About myself" section.
I work with each child as an individual. As each child is different, they have a unique approach to learning that I am willing to find out and use. I have a relaxed style but we cover a lot in the time we have and I have started to see a change after a few sessions.

Personal Description:
I have been working as a Neuroscience researcher for the past 8 years at the National Institute for Medical Research in London. Before that, I did a PhD in Molecular Oncology with the University of London, working in a Cancer Research UK lab. Overall, I have more than 10 years experience as a scientist using Molecular Biology to approach different fields of Medical Research.
I speak portuguese, french and spanish in addition to english. I also play the piano and practise different sports, mainly Capoeira (a brazilian fight/dance). I am also a keen amateur chef. Overall, I really enjoy learning new things and being a student as much as a teacher.

Teaching Experience:

I began tutoring when I was a Biochemistry undergraduate student. I worked with students from primary to A-levels and University helping them with Chemistry, Science, Biology and Biochemistry. Just as I was finishing my degree I became a junior assistant professor in the Faculty of Medicine, conducting practical Biochemistry lessons for first year Medicine students.
In the UK I have tutored Biology and Chemistry at GCSE and A level for students under different exam boards. I have done both specific, intensive preparation for exams and long-term tutoring aimed at improving the base knowledge on the subject and creating study methods that will allow the student to become independent and efficient.
As part of my research work I also regularly train younger scientists and PhD students, as well as undergraduate placement students.

Tutoring Approach:

On my first tutoring session with a new student we start by identifying what are the main challenges, what is the overall goal and how to break it into progressive manageable steps. We then establish timelines and start working! As work starts we constantly reassess problems and progress. Each lesson usually starts with a brief review and discussion where I lead to student to reflect about the importance understanding a particular subject and how it connects to our daily lives. The student will be asking and answering questions, working through examples and using schematic representations to consolidate knowledge. Progress is ultimately measured by the student's ability to explain what has been learned with enough detail and clarity to inform someone new to the subject.

Personal Description:
I am a second year medical student at UCL and passed first year with a Merit. The subjects I took for AS level were Chemistry,Biology,Maths and Economics and I achieved 4As, scoring over 90% in each. I took Chemistry, Biology and Maths for A level and achieved an A* in each, gaining 100% in chemistry and biology. I am very confident in teaching all 3 subjects up to and including A-level at a high standard.

Teaching Experience:

I mentored younger boys for chemistry for 2 years at school and other family members. I have recently taken my A levels and achieved high grades so the information is still fresh in my mind. I can pass on learning styles I have developed to achieve high grades.

Tutoring Approach:

First of all I will determine the level of knowledge my student has and from there I will draw up a teaching plan with them. It is important to ask students if they have particular areas of the syllabus which they struggle with, in order to concentrate on these areas in particular. I will ensure that my student has a good grounding knowledge which we can build on in subsequent lessons. I am a firm believer in using the syllabus whilst learning as it provides the core knowledge of the exams.

Personal Description:
Hi, I have recently graduated from Uni of York and am now working as an accountant for one of the BIG 4 accounting firms in London. I am a very active, creative and responsible individual. I enjoy a wide range of activities such as horse riding, cookery, ballet and circus arts. Through my tutoring, I can offer advice on a diverse range of topics from insights into the finance industry to advice with extra-curriculum activities.
I will be happy to complete a CRB check if that is required.

Teaching Experience:

I have had group tutoring and individual tutoring experience in the past as a summer course teacher.
My experience is mainly in teaching English as a second language, Maths and Chinese. Through my time as a summer course teacher, I have also had to offer career advice and help on my student's personal life. My classes during the summer had up to 30 students at a time and the age range was 6 - 20 yo.

I have had 2 years experience in giving career advice at the university, so I will be happy to help my students with any university or job applications.

Tutoring Approach:

I usually spend the first lesson understanding the strengths and weaknesses of my students and plan lessons and gather material from my first assessment. I tailor my teaching to every student and vary the approach accordingly. For students who are quite behind from their peers, I would focus on the key fundamentals and select more important topics to cover. For students who are looking for a bit more knowledge, I would provide material for a higher level and try to encourage the student to do extra reading around the topics they feel particularly passionate about.
Each student is different and has different needs so it is essential that I tailor my teaching to nurture the talents in each person.
