Personal Description:
Hi! My name's Ed. I read Classics at Cambridge before going on to train at the Bristol Old Vic. I'm now working as a professional actor in London.

I tutor in English, and all areas of Latin and Ancient Greek. If it's of interest, I particularly specialized in my finals papers on Homer, Virgil, Horace, and the evolution of tragedy.

Though I read Classics, a large chunk of my finals actually ended up being part of the English course - specifically tracing the origins of tragedy through to the present day. As an actor, too, I'm continually having to familiarize myself with new areas of literature, be it poetry, drama, or prose, with the advantage, I hope, of an extremely practical approach.

Teaching Experience:

Overall, I've found it best to keep a balance between tutoring English and Classics. I like to be teaching a range of things.

When moving to Bristol I was lucky enough to be offered a part-time teaching post with the Classics department at Clifton College. Over the two years I primarily taught A level language work in Greek and Latin, as well as coaching their prospective candidates for Oxford and Cambridge.

I've also done a lot of free-lancing in all sorts of areas for both English and Classics, tutoring Oxbridge applicants as well as students at both school and university level.

The work I've done with my tutees has varied widely. In Latin and Greek, I've assisted some specifically in translating set texts both at school and university level (I'm now very familiar with the OCR Latin syllabus); I've introduced others, who wished to explore beyond their prescribed syllabus, to new areas of literature; and with others I've worked on more wide-ranging ways to deepen literary analysis or approach translation.

I should probably add that my language work with school students has almost exclusively involved tackling the inadequacies of the confounded Cambridge Latin Course! This seems to be taught in virtually every school but seemingly never elects to teach grammar, which I find utterly bizarre. If you're a victim of this clueless course I'm more than happy to help!

In terms of English tuition, I've been fortunate enough to have a similarly broad range of tutees, at GCSE, A level, and university standard, though a high proportion have been Oxbridge candidates.

Tutoring Approach:

I think it's impossible to pin down a sure-fire method of effective tutoring for any given person. People are different, and different methods work with different people.

That said, I am a firm believer that you cannot simply speak at someone. Learning has to be an active process, and I think there has to be involvement from both sides for things to sink in. In this light, I do try to make things enjoyable, and also to limit shortcuts; I'm of the view that it's far better to invest the time in getting firmly to grips with a subject, be it an instance of grammar or literary concept. In the long run that is a shortcut in itself.

Personal Description:
I am 28 years old and have just finished my fifth year of teaching. The first four of those years were in a successful Birmingham grammar school and have just completed my first year at one of Bath's top school. My own education was received at a mixed comprehensive school in Wiltshire, after which I attended the University of Birmingham where I studied mathematics. I have recently moved back to the area after eight years in Birmingham, living with my wife and 4 year old labrador. Amongst other interests, I am always looking to stretch myself and keep my interest in mathematics and education alive by reading literature (particularly by Marcus du Sautoy) and attending seminars by the Association of Teachers of Mathematics (ATM) and other such organisations linked with various universities.

Teaching Experience:

The majority of my teaching so far was at a school within the King Edward VI consortium in Birmingham, teaching boys in KS3 and KS4, the majority of whom have target grades of A/A*. Around 35% of my timetable has been teaching KS5, both years 12 and 13. I have taught C1-4, S1 and M1. I also have experience teaching a range of abilities, from SEN to A/A* students at two co-educational, OFSTED rated outstanding schools in Birmingham. I also have experience of tutoring trainee teachers preparing for their QTS tests and also those preparing for the King Edward's entrance exam. I am a firm believer that anyone, of any age and ability, can learn mathematics and learn it well. The key is finding a medium that relates to the student. I am willing to try a range of different teaching methods to ensure that all of my students understand the concepts and ideas that they are being taught. What I will always do is give a relavance and a meaning to whatever I am teaching. That way, I believe the learning is more engaging, more enjoyable and therefore will be of a higher quality. Let me introduce myself, I've been an Enrichment Teaching now for over 20 years, my area of teaching has been dedicated to the younger generation between 3-12 year-olds, offering unique individual study support from: homework projects, enrichment programs, to the school curriculum.

I originally set up my first Pre-school Enrichment Centre in 2002, which I'm proud to say, is still running 15 years later in North London, England. I'm also part-owner of an Enrichment Centre in Boca Raton, Florida.

I'm a native Chinese (Mandarin) speaker. I got my Bachelor's degree in Beijing, the capital city of China. I'm familiar with both northern and southern dialects, as I was born in the southern part of China but have been living in the northern part for years. I'm a MSc student at University of Edinburgh, majoring in artificial intelligence. I'm willing to share you the state of the art in this subject. I love travelling and fitness. Hoping to tutor someone who share the same interets with me.

Teaching Experience:

I was a voluteer during the summer vacation in 2013, teaching junior and senior middle school students from rural area in China. I was responsibile for the language courses, Chinses and English. For the Chinese subject, I taught both ancient Chinese and modern Chinese.

Tutoring Approach:

I prefer laerning through practice. The best way to learn a language is to keep talking in that language.
I will chat with you on topics you are interested in.
I can also assist with writing, reading and grammatical exercises upon request.
