I also work with children with behavioural difficulties/learning disabilities and with adults of all ages and nationalities.

Should you wish to use me, you would encounter a tutor easy to relate to and learn from in an enjoyable and easy environment. I believe a student who is abler ease with their tutor is far more likely to progress no matter where they are starting from!

I hope very much to hear from you soon.

Private Tuition (Paddington) Private tutor
Government-funded scheme to increase literacy levels amongst primary school pupils
2006-Present: Private Tuition in in all subjects and age ranges offered throughout London.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe one to one private tuition requires a tutor who can adapt to the needs of the pupil.

I would wish to meet the pupil initially to establish how they may best be assisted and what the pupil's key areas of concern are.

In short, each mind, young or old, needs different approaches and I believe my strongest ability is an adaptability to meet the varying needs and requirements of every student.

My approach, in most cases would be to follow a curriculum, finding out where their difficulties lie within this curriculum and how it would be best to resolve them.

I tend to use past papers when it comes to exam based tuition as this is ultimately what they will be faced with come exam time! However, when I have a pupil for longer there is more scope for more imaginative teaching or simply assistance with difficult homework.

With each of my previous pupils I have needed and been able to assist them in a way that is individually appealing to them and I have never had a pupil who has not achieved their desired results.

Personal Description:
I am an experienced, friendly and approachable lady working on a freelance basis and am still involved with High School teaching in the Leeds area. I worked in industry before deciding to fulfil my ambition to become a teacher.

My experience as a private tutor has been extremely rewarding over the years and I have seen every one of my students go from strength to strength, and am proud to say that they have all enjoyed the one to one experience.

Teaching Experience:

I have twenty years' experience of teaching English in High Schools -class teaching and one to one tuition. My expertise also incorporates teaching English as a second language having gained a Trinity qualification in Barcelona.
Over the years I have had considerable success with a variety of students, improving achievement levels and GCSE grades.

Tutoring Approach:

I am a very friendly person who tries to make learning fun. I understand the frustrations of young people who are demotivated and struggling to make sense of the English curriculum. My view is that there has to be a two way process and I will encourage the student to develop independent learning skills.

Practising a holistic approach allows young people to achieve their full potential through an appropriate tailor-made study plan. This will support their individual needs and requirements for personal and educational development.

I am happy to teach students in my home or the student's-depending on distance. Travel expenses would be charged if not in my local area-LS17 (North Leeds).

Personal Description:
Hi! My name's Ed. I read Classics at Cambridge before going on to train at the Bristol Old Vic. I'm now working as a professional actor in London.

I tutor in English, and all areas of Latin and Ancient Greek. If it's of interest, I particularly specialized in my finals papers on Homer, Virgil, Horace, and the evolution of tragedy.

Though I read Classics, a large chunk of my finals actually ended up being part of the English course - specifically tracing the origins of tragedy through to the present day. As an actor, too, I'm continually having to familiarize myself with new areas of literature, be it poetry, drama, or prose, with the advantage, I hope, of an extremely practical approach.

Teaching Experience:

Overall, I've found it best to keep a balance between tutoring English and Classics. I like to be teaching a range of things.

When moving to Bristol I was lucky enough to be offered a part-time teaching post with the Classics department at Clifton College. Over the two years I primarily taught A level language work in Greek and Latin, as well as coaching their prospective candidates for Oxford and Cambridge.

I've also done a lot of free-lancing in all sorts of areas for both English and Classics, tutoring Oxbridge applicants as well as students at both school and university level.

The work I've done with my tutees has varied widely. In Latin and Greek, I've assisted some specifically in translating set texts both at school and university level (I'm now very familiar with the OCR Latin syllabus); I've introduced others, who wished to explore beyond their prescribed syllabus, to new areas of literature; and with others I've worked on more wide-ranging ways to deepen literary analysis or approach translation.

I should probably add that my language work with school students has almost exclusively involved tackling the inadequacies of the confounded Cambridge Latin Course! This seems to be taught in virtually every school but seemingly never elects to teach grammar, which I find utterly bizarre. If you're a victim of this clueless course I'm more than happy to help!

In terms of English tuition, I've been fortunate enough to have a similarly broad range of tutees, at GCSE, A level, and university standard, though a high proportion have been Oxbridge candidates.

Some references from previous tutees below:

Naomi, A Level Latin and Greek (2013)

Ed,

Sorry it's so early but I just thought I'd let you know I got my Cambridge grades! Thank you so much for everything once again!

Neirin, Latin GCSE (2013)

Hello Ed. We are so delighted with Neirin's results, absolutely fabulous. And who would have thought - an A star in Latin! Thank you for all your effort and encouragement. He couldn't have done it without you. Enjoy the rest of the summer and good luck with the writing.

Katie, Oxbridge Ancient Greek (2013)

Ed's work with Katie has been completely outstanding. I think we were asking for something quite demanding, a combination of literature and language, with inspiration to boot, and he delivered it superbly. Katie was super-enthused by his approach. I think they both thoroughly enjoyed the classes (indeed from the sound of it I would have enjoyed them myself!) Ed has a combination of intellect, passion and (as far as I can judge) a real feel for the texts!

Zac, Scholarship Latin (2014)

Ed has been tutoring our 11 year old for Latin scholarship papers. In 5 sessions he has taken him to a new level and has totally inspired him! We can't recommend him highly enough!...

Hiya Ed,

Thanks for the email ... got an A* in Philosophy and A's in Latin and English.

Thank you very much for all your help, couldn't have got the A without your tutoring.

Hope all goes well for you at theatre school and you're enjoying the summer.

Best wishes,

Sophie.

You're also welcome to get in touch with the Head of Classics at Clifton College, Mr Huntington, who employed me at the school between 2009 and 2011.

Tutoring Approach:

I think it's impossible to pin down a sure-fire method of effective tutoring for any given person. People are different, and different methods work with different people.

That said, I am a firm believer that you cannot simply speak at someone. Learning has to be an active process, and I think there has to be involvement from both sides for things to sink in. In this light, I do try to make things enjoyable, and also to limit shortcuts; I'm of the view that it's far better to invest the time in getting firmly to grips with a subject, be it an instance of grammar or literary concept. In the long run that is a shortcut in itself.

Personal Description:
After obtaining my Master degree in St. Petersburg Academy (Russia, 2000) Ph.D. in fine art through Sorbonne (Paris, 2008), I moved to the UK and have been teaching part time with the Russian Art School in Oxford and Russian School in London. I specialise in Russian language, graphic design and textile art.

Teaching Experience:

I have tutored private students and taught classes of adolescent and pre-adolescent children through the Russian School in London as described above. Previously I have also taught Fine art in the St Petersburg Art School in Russia.

Tutoring Approach:

My approach to tutoring is holistic - I believe art is an expression of personal experience, and as such teaching technique is a means to an end rather than an end in itself. As an expression of a person's experience of life, art is also about beauty, and sharing the way that is perceived.

Personal Description:
I am a graduate of Oxford University in Engineering and Computing Science. I am fluent in French (as well as English and Polish). From an early age, I had a passion for maths and physics and at school, I imagined how I would envisage teaching those subjects differently. I would often explain things in an alternative way to my friends to help their understanding.
Please note that I also teach engineering topics at university level, usually up to first or second year, depending on the topics.

Teaching Experience:

I have a variety of tutoring experience at both university and high school level (AS and A level). I like to begin teaching with a session to become acquainted with the tutee and their needs.

At Oxford, I studied under the tutorial system which usually meant one professor to one or two students and this taught me to express myself clearly. I often studied one-to-one with a coursemate where learning was achieved through exchanging knowledge by teaching each other.

Tutoring Approach:

I know that every person learns differently and I will be looking to tailor my tutoring style to every student's particular needs. For maths, engineering and physics, I will aim to first establish a thorough understanding of the basics concepts, which is fundamental to making progress in scientific subjects; this will be followed by lots of practice. For French, the key is to be comfortable with the language and I will aim to conduct lessons entirely in French as soon as possible.

Personal Description:
I recently obtained a masters degree in Mathematics from Queen Mary University and have been working as a Maths tutor since February 2011. As a result, apart from familiarising myself well with the UK system and curriculum, I have further developed my experience and teaching skills.
I'm very friendly and passionate with what I do. I'm enthusiastic with teaching and maths and trying to pass this feeling to my students as well. Maths is not plainly something you have to learn but something fun you can learn.

Teaching Experience:

Have been working as a maths tutor for pupils taking common entrance, GCSE, IGCSE, A-levels and undergraduates, for the past three years.

Below there's a selection of past and on going clients:
•Leyla: (17 yo) Home-tutoring for Maths AS-level. Focusing on C1, C2 and S1. Layla achieved an A in 2012.
•Nicole: (18 yo) Home-tutoring for Maths A2-level. Concentrating on C3, C4 and S2. Nicole's result in 2012 was a B.
•Sharan: (1st year University of Bristol, Business Studies) Exercise sheet guidance and preparation for summer exams in Maths and Statistics. (2012)
•Seb: (17 yo) Weekend home-tutoring for Maths IGCSE. Went from a predicted C to a B. Currently assisting on A level C1, C2, S1; predicted A (2014).
•James: (17 yo) Home-tutoring for Maths A2-level, focusing on C3, C4 and S2.
•Charlotte: (1st year University of Queen Mary, Mathematical Studies) Assisted with problem sheets and exam preparation on Calculus and Probability. (2013)
•Charles: (Adult learner, involved in banking) Providing maths revision on foundations of GCSE and A level syllabus (2014).
•Cheyne: (2nd year Birkbeck Economics) Assistance given on understanding Quantitative Technics and exam preparation (2014).
•Tom: (1st year UCL Economics) Guidance given on problem sheets as well as exam preparation on Mathematics for Business. (2013)
•Isabella: (18 yo girl) Home tutoring from IGCSE to A-level C1,C2,C3,C4,M1,S1; managed an overall B and successfully went on to study at Surrey University

Tutoring Approach:

I strive to create a well balanced relationship with pupils. I set clear targets for my students and expect them to develop throughout our sessions. Additionally, I emphasize on the suitable approach for each individual in order to have the best results possible. Finally, I consider humour an essential part of my sessions as it creates a better learning environment and a more enjoyable session.

I`m very flexible with days and times as long as sufficient notice is given.
Sessions could take place at student`s or my current residence at Balham, as well as a mutually agreed location.

*With regard to my rates, they are negotiable for block booking and discounted for trial sessions.

Personal Description:
I am currently studying in my third year of Geophysics at Imperial College London, Royal School Of Mines. I am an active and friendly person, and truly wish to help students whilst studying the subjects that I use in my everyday life. I have 5 A Levels in Mathematics, Further Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology. I am particularly qualified to teach the Core Mathematics modules at A level (C1, C2, C3, C4), as well as the Mechanics modules (M1, M2, M3).

Teaching Experience:

I have voluntarily tutored students in mathematics to ensure they pass their GCSE exams. However, on a day-to-day basis, I have consistently helped fellow classmates, giving explanations of the sciences and maths to help them understand the work at GCSE and A Level. I also have experience in tutoring younger secondary school children in mathematics (Years 7-9).

Tutoring Approach:

Students must have easy and reliable methods to ensure the best possible understanding of mathematics and sciences. Once specific examples of questions have been taught, it is important that the student tries the techniques his/herself with guidance. I am a firm believer of 'practice makes perfect', and so I prepare a range of questions that should challenge the student, whilst building their confidence in the subject. However, I understand that time is valuable and sometimes the student may just need help finishing their coursework, and so I will adjust my tutoring approach to suit the individual.

Personal Description:
I graduated from the University of Leeds in 2009 and work as a restaurant manager tutoring maths part time. I work shifts so I'm generally available at any time throughout the week and weekend. I'm friendly and make my students feel at ease so they feel comfortable to ask for help with questions which they may not have the confidence to ask during classes at school.

Teaching Experience:

4 years tutor experience with pupils from year 8 up to adult students.

There are many teachers on here which may be perfect for some children as a tutor. I am not a qualified teacher however all of my previous students have selected me for that sole reason - so their child has a tutor and not a teacher to help them with their maths. They have all felt instantly relaxed with me, more inclined to ask questions and extremely driven to prove themselves.

Reference available upon request

Tutoring Approach:

Every child is different so it's explaining a topic in a way that makes sense to them rather then the way the teacher wants them to learn. If the child feels relaxed with the tutor they are more likely to understand something rather then just feel under pressure to say they understand.

Personal Description:
I began at the University of Virginia in 2014 and have now returned home to England for the summer! I completed my A levels in 2013 and over a gap year, worked at a legal recruitment firm as well as for a charity organisation. I'm a fun, hard working and energetic character whose always had a passion for working with children.

Because I`ve recently finished school I am very familiar with how the exam system runs, and know where the 'crunch' times will occur. As I am at university in America currently, I have completed the SATS multiple times so can help teach time management as I myself had to struggle to stay on top of 13 applications and extra essays!
I want to help kids create effective and fun ways to revise so that they can overcome the stress of everyday work loads and exams.

Teaching Experience:

I have tutored many different children on a weekly basis for the duration of 2013. Their ages range from 8-14 and at the moment I teach French, maths, English and verbal skills.

I have worked with children with disabilities for 4 years now, including those with autism and other mental challenges, to those with physical disabilities such as cerebral palsy. Working with children will not be difficult for me as I have also casually tutored friends on areas of work they found particularly hard, as well as helped them create work plans so they could stay on top of their studies. In addition, I have been selected to be an academic advisor to students entering their first years of university.

Tutoring Approach:

I think the most important part of being a tutor is helping the child find an effective strategy to deal with their work load. Whether that means using flash cards, creating mnemonics or testing, I want to make the process as fun as possible. In addition, I think helping anyone with their general work load will mean aiding them in creating usable structures and easy step plans so a 5 page essay can be managed in small bitesize sections. Learning time management is also equally important, so I would emphasise this too in my teaching.

I like to keep the lessons as fun and interesting as possible. Of course, work still needs to be done, but I don't like being forceful or strict. I want a child to be able to see me as someone to look up to and look forward to our lessons, rather than dread them!

Extra work is up to the child/parents, I'm happy to set prep so long as it isn't getting in the way of the child's other studies.

Personal Description:
I'm married and I'm 25 years old. I did a FDA Bussiness Administration and Management. I have done a Health and Safety L1 course. I love cooking. I am religious so I don't do tutoring on Sundays but I can do Saturday. I live in Liverpool. I love running, cooking and reading. I know how to say hello in over 10 languages. I love teaching.

Teaching Experience:

When I was 23 I left uni to go and be a missionary. I taught religion mainly to all age groups. I also taught all primary level subjects. I taught 6-15 yrs old at least three times a week. I saw they're grades go up in less than 4 weeks. I was amazed as I never had teaching experience before then. I love spending my time learning and discovering new things. I gained two years of experience teaching people of all age groups, different ethnicities and diversity.

Tutoring Approach:

We work as a team. Hard work brings great result. I love to find joy in learning.
