Personal Description:
I have always loved science, and for my first degree I studied biology at London University. I worked for two years as a plant physiologist for ICI Agrochemicals before moving to Bristol to work towards a PhD. I studied the molecular genetics of plant pathogen, and stayed on in the lab as a researcher after I finished my PhD.

I am now a parent and am teaching part time in Bath.

Teaching Experience:

I achieved my PGCE in secondary science from Bath Spa University in 2007. My first teaching job was at a secondary school in Wiltshire, teaching all sciences at KS3 and 4. In September 2009 I started working part time teaching A level biology at a secondary school in Bath.

Tutoring Approach:

I discuss a topic with the student to assess their understanding, and to find which areas need clarification or explanation. I aim for a secure understanding rather than rote learning. I believe it is important for students to be familiar with the approach used by the exam board that they are working for, so I ensure that have plenty of practice with past exam questions.

Personal Description:
My main areas of expertise are Chemistry and Biology, which were directly related to my Bachelors of Science, which I completed at University of Southampton, however for younger levels of education I am also able to teach English, as well as Physics.
I also believe in accessibility to tuition for as many people as possible, so I am willing to negotiate on any prices.
For this summer vacation (2009), I'm offering tutoring to help students prepare for the year to come, what ever the stage of their education, so I am interested in tutoring during this coming summer holiday.

Teaching Experience:

I have worked in teaching as a part time/temporary role on and off for more than four years now, from the ages of 8 to 18, so far with exceptional feedback. It has been an integral part of my work for a long time, and with my background it has been my passion and joy to help young people reach their full potential, which is so hard in today's education system - as I personally can attest to!

Tutoring Approach:

The approach to tutoring depends wholly on two things -
[i]: the purpose of extra tuition for the student,
whether to ensure the highest grades are achieved, just assist in understanding the work that happens within school, or if necessary to provide a more total educational experience that covers over and above the current syllabus of the student
and also
[ii]: the level that the student wishes to attain within the time constraints available.
Therefore, each student requires a different approach that will engage them as much as possible.

Whether that is through more visual learning, more aural learning, through discussion, or even standard note taking.
I encompass all these approaches as much as possible, to keep the student actively involved and interested in their learning, however I tailor according to their particular aptitude.
Either way, retaining that knowledge and enabling them to achieve the highest grade possible to prove their full capacity is, of course, my aim.
An important aspect of my teaching is the need to make it accessible for as many people as possible, so all my prices can be negotiated depending on the circumstances of the family hiring.

Personal Description:
I am a first year PhD student at the Univeristy of Wales. My research interests are in neurophysiology and pathophysiology of knee osteoarthritis in relation to foot posture and knee alignment. I am a motivated individual and am very passionate about learning, developing new ideas based on a good knowledge base of a subject and finding innovative ways to approach education.
I am a very strong candidate for tutor academically, having been awarded scholarships several times through College and University. I am currently an RCBC PhD Fellow and will hold that position for the next three years upon the completion of my doctorate.
I am easy-going, a good listener and will do my best to make the learning experience as fun and as educational for me, as it is for my student.

Teaching Experience:

I have been on several tutorial boards through school, college and university. It has always been about helping my peers and friends study subjects that I find interesting and trying to get them to see a situation/topic from a different perspective.

Tutoring Approach:

As I mentioned before, I am very easy going. I have been a high academic achiever my entire schooling life and I think I would very much enjoy the challenge of making a subject such as Biology or Classics interesting for a student.

Personal Description:
I'm a 23 year old graduate from Oxford University, where I studied French language and literature. I have lived and worked in France on two occasions, for a year and a half in total, and therefore have a sound grasp of the French language, both formal and informal. I have 6 months experience of teaching English as a foreign language and plan to pursue a career in that area. I absolutely love teaching and enjoy interacting with and helping students to improve their language skills, and to enjoy it in the process. I'm friendly, and have an imaginative approach to lesson planning.

Teaching Experience:

I have 6 months experience as an English language assistant in an adult teacher training college in France. I also have experience of private tutoring, both in English as a foreign language and in French.

Tutoring Approach:

It depends entirely on the individual person/group's needs and goals, i.e. whether they are aiming for an exam, or taking classes purely for fun or out of interest. Either way, I try to make lessons fun and interesting, be it by simply expressing my own enthusiasm for learning and thus motivating my students, or planning interactive and engaging lessons for the students. Because I am a language teacher, I try to incorporate a mixture of grammar, vocabulary and practise into my lessons, with the focus being on the practical side of things. There is nothing more rewarding for a student than understanding a point of grammar/vocabulary then being able to apply it by producing a sentence or taking part in a conversation themselves, and there is nothing more rewarding for me than observing a student's skill and enthusiasm improving over the course of a lesson.

Personal Description:
I am a third year Law student at the University of Bristol. I love English, it is my first language, and I took it right through to A-levels at school, achieving an A at A level, and A* at GCSE. I have a lot of experience with children between the age of one and eleven, and I am comfortable with teaching them while also making it fun. I am able to speak some Mandarin, which is helpful for tutoring English as a foreign language, and I am patient and dedicated.

Teaching Experience:

I have no teaching experience.

Tutoring Approach:

I like to tackle any particular problems a student may have first, before following a more structured plan, whether it be a school syllabus, or a list of topics a student wishes to cover. I am confident that my experience from studying English at school is a great asset to me.

Personal Description:
I took early retirement in 2007, with a view to selling our house and moving away from London. I moved up to Nottinghamshire in April 2009, to fill the post of MFL Supply teacher at The National School, Hucknall, for one term.

I live in a village close to the M1 motorway and the Derby/Notts border.

I drive and am quite familiar with Derbyshire, where I grew up and Nottinghamshire, where I now live.

Teaching Experience:

I taught French, German and some Spanish for 37 years in London. For much of that time I was Head of Department in 4 schools and a member of the Senior Management Team, with responsibility for MFL, NQT's and GTPS, STaff Development and the bid for Investors in People.

My husband and I have taken hundreds of students to Germany & France on various Twinning visits and for a while I assisted the Twinning Officer in Hackney, East London. I have delivered INSET in both Hackney and Waltham Forest and have always been involved in extra-curricular activities, such as Multi-Cultural Poetry Evenings, Eid celebrations & Caribbean Carnival.

Tutoring Approach:

I have frequently provided individual tuition in French & German in after-school slots; I offered German tuition for one student, when there were no mainstream German classes.

I see the role of Tutor as that of enabling and encouraging the student to take responsibility for his/her own learning, and also to support their understanding, where maybe mainstream has failed, or where long-term absence from class has held the student back. Much of the job depends on the ability to motivate and encourage students who may otherwise be lacking confidence in themselves.

Personal Description:
I am currently doing my PhD in Computer Science from University of York. I did my MS in Computer Science from Michigan State University, USA with a GPA of 3.75 out of 4.0. Before that I did my BSc in Electrical Engineering with honours.

I have used a variety of tools for different tasks: C++, Java, Scheme and Prolog for programming; MS Excel, MS Word and MS Power point for my job; perl scripts for research purposes; Alice for teaching school kids animation and many others.

Teaching Experience:

I have more than 3 years experience of teaching under-grads at the university level. I have also been demonstrating under-grad students for almost 2 years now at University of York. I also have experience of teaching Alice to school kids. I also have industrial experience where I develop economic models in MS Excel.

Tutoring Approach:

I like to teach in an interactive manner and try to use as much technical aids as possible, since I have a technical background. I encourage curiosity among students. When my students can not comprehend the problem I try to break it down into smaller modules so they get confidence by working on easier problems first and then scaling up their solutions to solve the main problem. I encourage questioning and try to answer the students even if I have to explain more than once.

Personal Description:
Currently I am a student at the University of Sussex, Brighton. I am in my second year of my degree in International Relations and Contemporary European Studies. I am originally from Germany where I finished school and then decided to move to England. I speak both English and German fluently and additionally, as I have learned English in school, have the advantage of understanding the processes involved in learning a foreign language.

Teaching Experience:

I have tutored students in Germany for about 6 years in English and Maths. One of my students that I tutored consistently finished in the top of his class. In addition, I have worked with children aged 9 to 14 during holidays. Since the beginning of this academic year (08/09) I have been working as a Student Mentor for Sussex University. In this capacity I have helped students with difficulties. This includes the preparation of presentations and essay plans as well as reading through and editing essays.

Tutoring Approach:

I take a rather laid-back approach as I do not believe in too much pressure. I try to establish a friendly relationship with my tutees so that they have the confidence to ask questions and are not afraid to ask questions. I believe that the easiest method to improve one's grades through tutoring is doing your homework with your tutor. This helps students keep up with school work and gives the tutor the ability to see where the student's weaknesses lie. Then, in addition to the homework, the tutor and the tutee can work more specifically on these weaknesses. Especially for tutoring in languages, I see from my own experience that speaking it with native speakers is crucial. Much of my tutoring for German would thus involve conversational parts.

Personal Description:
I have taught Spanish and French for over 30 years. For me the essence of enjoyable lessons is to give the student confidence in her / his ability to speak and understand speech in the foreign language. I have had consistently outstanding results at both GCSE and A Levels in both foreign languages and I feel sure that we had a lot of laughs on the way to this success.

I am very familiar with the English Syllabus at GCSE and A Levels, and recently obtained an A Level myself in this subject! Given my abilities as a teacher of languages I have already embarked on a number of projects with students in this field. They (and I) seem to be enjoying them!!

Teaching Experience:

Various secondary schools in London, Nottingham. Milton Keynes, Dunstable and St. Albans.

AEC (Spanish and French) in Notts and Oxfordshire

Private classes to individuals in Dunstable and Milton Keynes.

Tutoring Approach:

With languages the most important thing is to get you feeling at ease with speaking and listening. This will come with plenty of encouragement for the things you CAN do rather than raised eyebrows for the things you can't (yet).

With English, just getting YOU to express YOURSELF. The more you say the better.

Oh, and a bit of a laugh too.
