Personal Description:
I am an enthusiastic, engaging person with nine years experience teaching and tutoring A-level Chemistry and GCSE Science with a passion for my subject. In my spare time I watch and play football, enjoy reading, hiking and watching films; on the odd occasion I like to go skiing or scuba diving.

I studied A-levels before deciding to go to Durham University to read Chemistry. Once I finished my degree, I trained as a teacher at Manchester University and worked in Manchester for three years before moving down to London for four years. I have been teaching A-level Chemistry for eight years in total and have experience tutoring every exam board including the IB. I am also an OCR Examiner for AS Chemistry Exam Breadth in Chemistry and A-level Unified Chemistry.

In the Summer 2014 exams, I successfully guided the Chemistry department to their first 100% pass rate and a headline figure of 83% A-C in AS Chemistry.
In the Summer 2015 exams, the A-level Chemistry results at Sacred Heart were one of the best with 93% A*-C (64% A*-B).
In the Summer 2016, A-level Chemistry achieved 80% A*-C (65% A*-B) grades.

I left teaching last year to go back to university to read Medicine and I am currently in my 2nd year. However I am still looking to tutor students who require support and advice in Chemistry.

Teaching Experience:

First Post: Crompton House School (OCR): September 2009 - August 2011(Teacher of GCSE and A-level Chemistry)

Second Post: Bolton School (AQA): September 2011 - August 2012 (Teacher of GCSE and A-level Chemistry)

Third Post: Sacred Heart Catholic School (OCR): September 2012 - August 2016 (Lead Teacher of Chemistry)

OCR Specialist Examiner: September 2013 - present
Breadth in Chemistry (H032/01)
Unified Chemistry (H432/03)

Currently a 2nd Year Medical Student at Manchester University.

Tutoring Approach:

I am a very calm, patient and relaxed person and this is reflected in my tutoring. Many students can have difficulty with Science (in particular Chemistry) and with a one on one approach can be more motivating than in a classroom environment. I have an excellent knowledge of Science and can communicate this effectively. I will take you as far as you need to go in the subject and will be efficient with your time. Past successes include two students whom increased a grade from a B to A to get onto a Medicine course and also recently a student whom achieved a C at AS level and came out with an A for his full A-level.

I normally tutor by focusing on key concepts and ideas, using past paper questions to highlight what the exam requirements are and help students learn to apply their knowledge, which is an essential aspect of Chemistry. I prefer the students to bring particular questions or topics and we can discuss them and look at application and exam style questions.

Personal Description:
I am currently a freelance writer and researcher working from home on a variety of subjects, including English Literature, Theatre/Film/Media Studies, Sociology, Psychology, as well as other Humanities. I am flexible about when I can tutor, to work round the schedule of others.

Teaching Experience:

I have tutored GCSE, A-level, Degree and Doctorate-level students on a range of subjects, although my main focus has been English Literature and Psychology, and, increasingly, Sociology. At Cambridge I spent a few weeks working in a primary school, as I did when I was younger, and I used to teach primary school children at home as my mum was a childminder. I have run drama clubs and workshops, and worked with a host of young people, including those with learning difficulties. I have written model essays for exam boards, proofread and edited work to be published, and worked on many dissertations and PhDs with University students.

My students generally gain their desired grades at A-Level, if they apply themselves and take my advice on tips and tricks to help with revision - little and often is the key, as well as putting random words or theorists where you can see them everyday - like your mirror! - so they can become familiar and memorable.

Tutoring Approach:

I have access to previous papers and model exam answers, and ensure that I am clued up on exam specifications and changes. For English, I will of course always read the set texts that my tutees are studying prior to the first session. I like to mind-map various themes and ideas with the student, and think outside the box as it were, and always make sure that the ideas stem from the student's own work and thinking - so that they can remember it more fully and develop it in future (often students have more knowledge, ideas and insight than they realise, it just needs coaxing out of them!). I often tutor on coursework as well as examination preparation.

For Psychology and Sociology, a more systematic approach is required; I generally like to go over the material thoroughly, testing the student throughout, and spend time on previous exam papers and questions, planning essay answers, discussing how theories relate to real-life situations, and generally helping the student grasp what is required of them in the exam.

I am enthusiastic about helping other people with academic subjects, and enjoy teaching and explaining various topics in science and maths. I have a personal love for these subjects and I am always interested to learn more.

Teaching Experience:

I have been invited by Mosslands School to join their mentoring programme aimed at year 11 students to help them with maths and achieve the highest grade they can.

Tutoring Approach:

When I am tutoring I aim to find what the pupil is struggling with or needs more practice and help with those areas, filling in the basics if this is what is required. I do this by asking the pupil questions or by going through questions in an exam paper or revision guide.

Personal Description:
I am a retired R&D Scientist, formerly with H.M. Government, where I was involved in a number of projects in the field of electronics and communications.
I am married to a teacher (who is qualified to B.A and PGSE, and is also a private tutor) and now successfully tutor maths and physics to GCSE and A-Level from home.

Teaching Experience:

I am a graduate of Queen Mary College, University of London where I obtained B.Sc (first class) and Ph.D. After getting my Ph.D. I worked as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow where, in addition to my research, I had a number of teaching duties, including lecturing to an M.Sc. course on digital processing.

I have been tutoring GCSE and A-level since 2006 and have achieved notable successes including A and A* grades.
I will be pleased to pass on names of referees to potential students.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe the best results are obtained by kind, confidence-building one-to-one tuition so that lessons and homework can be tailored to the student's individual needs and speed.
I like to keep the lessons reasonably informal so that the student does not feel under undue pressure, but has time to acquire a deeper understanding of the subject. I reinforce the student's knowledge by working through examples, both from textbooks and from past papers.
I work very much as part of a team with my wife Sue, who tutors the younger students, while I concentrate on the GCSE and A level students. So while this listing is in my name, she will probably take over those in school year 4 to year 7. We do not tutor students below year 4.
Sorry, but we do not travel to students because we find it far more efficient for students to visit us at home, where we have all our reference material and teaching resources to hand.

Personal Description:
Postgraduate Student.

I am a twenty-one year old postgraduate student at the University of Glasgow. I enjoy helping students reach their full potential and understand the tricky bits of their material which is escaping their understanding. I am a Canadian studying abroad here in Glasgow and therefore do not have GCSEs or A levels, but I have the equivalent levels from Canadian institutions with top marks. I tutor best in history, my chosen subject, English or French as a second language, and maths, which I not only did well in during secondary school, but all of which I have also studied at the University level. I get along very well with students of all ages and try to make the tutoring experience a fun an interesting one for any student.

Teaching Experience:

Tutoring 1 on 1
ESL teaching (Group sizes from 5-12)
Age range of experience: 7-18 year olds

I have several years of teaching experience in different settings and with different age groups. I've taught English as a Second Language in a camp setting which ran lessons similar to classroom lessons every morning. I had to design my own approaches to various topics which gave me a lot of practice in making studying and learning interesting and easier for children who were less interested or struggling. I also tutored on a private basis for primary school-aged children through the medium of French and English in reading and writing skills as well as the general subjects at that age. I have tutored at the secondary school level in Maths, English, French, Sciences, and History. I have also been a teaching assistant at the University level for both Irish and Scottish Gaelic second language courses as well as a general Celtic World knowledge course.

Tutoring Approach:

Learning should be fun.
Aim is to help student learn how they understand instruction so that they are more confident in their own abilities and can perform better in the future.
Use past work to improve on future work.

Learning should be fun and I strive to make the tutoring experience less about school work and more about understanding the ways in which what is being taught is of interest to the student. Finding ways to improve the student's understanding and learning experience sometimes means approaching the material in a different way than is being taught in class. Teachers understand that not all student learn the same way but cannot always deliver their teaching in all these ways. By helping the student understand the material first and then explaining the method the teacher used to explain it first allows the student to reach their full potential, understand the material, and go back to class with a better chance following the teacher's instruction.

All of this is done in a light-mannered way that does not make the child feel as though tutoring is a punishment for not understanding in class, but rather, a (sometimes lengthy) temporary situation until the student becomes more confident about his or her own skills!

Using the student's own work is an important tool for helping them recognize their own areas of difficulty and should be used again as mock exams to help the student see tangible proof of their improvements. The best understanding of any subject comes from watching it being done/having it explained, doing it oneself, and then teaching it in turn.

Personal Description:
I am a hardworking student in year 12 who enjoys learning. I took my GSCE exams last year in which I achieved 8A*s and 2As. I was in the accelerated IGCSE Maths class taking my exam a year early and going on to sit an exam for an Additional Mathematics qualification where I got an A which was the highest achievable grade. I am patient and well organised. Science and Maths are my favourite subjects and I am hoping to study Natural Sciences at university level.

Teaching Experience:

I have experience of mentoring a pupil once a week and also helping out at a homework club both in a voluntary capacity. As a mentor I have experience of one to one tutoring. Volunteering at the homework club has given me experience with the range of different people who come each week with varying needs.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe that everyone has the capacity to learn any subject. It is my desire to build confidence in any individual who wishes to study any subject they have an interest in or want help with. I want to help people enjoy learning. As I have recently taken these exams myself I am familiar with the subject content and exam technique necessary to achieve high grades.

Personal Description:
I am a professional writer and my most recent qualification is a first-class BA in English Language and Literature awarded in 2013 from the University of Leeds. I also have an up-to-date DBS certificate.

Teaching Experience:

I have worked as a tutor with JK Educate - a large agency who've equipped me with training to meet the needs of my tutees. I've also completed the University of Leeds Peer Mentoring Programme, a role which required me to give academic and pastoral advice to first years in the School of English when I was in my second and third years.

Tutoring Approach:

Tutoring is, to many people, the cornerstone of a progressive education. In our current educational climate, tutoring offers to children a means to achieve academic success and progress onto the institutions of their dreams. I should know. Having been raised on a council estate in Bow, East London, where the state schools are poor (to put it mildly), I was tutored, firstly by my dad in arithmetic, then by a stream of excellent tutors who added English and more advanced Maths to my home curriculum, and by the time I left primary school I held a scholarship offer to my dream school. the prestigious independent day school City Of London.

Larger class sizes mean that children don't get the attention they deserve. In my school years I fell into that general category of learners that require close attention throughout their education to achieve their goals. I felt that the bulk of secondary school was particularly challenging because I was in large classes, and by this point was not receiving supplementary tutoring. By A-Level, the smaller class sizes enabled me to flourish in my four chosen subjects and graduate to attend the University of Leeds on the Leeds scholarship. While there, the one-to-one tuition I received from my professors, who encouraged my research in healthy directions, helped me leave with a first-class result.

All this is to say that I know exactly how important tutoring is. For me it is a fantastic and rewarding experience, and one which I have a lot of energy and patience for. My approach is fastidious and rooted to the needs of the individual tutee. I also feel that, particularly with younger students, parents should be fully informed with regards to the progress their child is making and the areas which need improvement. Through close and critical observation I believe a tutor can massively turn the tide of a young learner's academic progress.

Personal Description:
Hi there!

I'm Anna, nearly 30 years old and I have a PhD and teaching experience in Chemistry, as well as a bit of Maths, English and German.

I'm originally from Germany, but live in lovely Edinburgh now. My English (with a wee bit of a Scottish accent) is as fluent as my German, which is also my mother tongue.

I'd happily help with Chemistry, Maths at beginners and intermediate level, as well as German and English. Of course said Science subjects can be taught in English as well as in German!

Teaching Experience:

I already tutored when I was a student myself, helping other kids with English and Maths. During my studies I helped other students with certain subjects of chemistry and as soon as I started my PhD, I was involved in the teaching at University, holding tutorials, helping with lectures and organising and leading lab courses.

Tutoring Approach:

I was always told I'm an excellent teacher, as I am very patient, approachable and able to break complex subjects down to a very easy, understandable level. Plus I love to see when people "klick", as in suddenly comprehend a subject they were not able to grasp before. In short, I really enjoy teaching.
