Personal Description:
Hi! My name's Ed. I read Classics at Cambridge before going on to train at the Bristol Old Vic. I'm now working as a professional actor in London.

I tutor in English, and all areas of Latin and Ancient Greek. If it's of interest, I particularly specialized in my finals papers on Homer, Virgil, Horace, and the evolution of tragedy.

Though I read Classics, a large chunk of my finals actually ended up being part of the English course - specifically tracing the origins of tragedy through to the present day. As an actor, too, I'm continually having to familiarize myself with new areas of literature, be it poetry, drama, or prose, with the advantage, I hope, of an extremely practical approach.

Teaching Experience:

Overall, I've found it best to keep a balance between tutoring English and Classics. I like to be teaching a range of things.

When moving to Bristol I was lucky enough to be offered a part-time teaching post with the Classics department at Clifton College. Over the two years I primarily taught A level language work in Greek and Latin, as well as coaching their prospective candidates for Oxford and Cambridge.

I've also done a lot of free-lancing in all sorts of areas for both English and Classics, tutoring Oxbridge applicants as well as students at both school and university level.

The work I've done with my tutees has varied widely. In Latin and Greek, I've assisted some specifically in translating set texts both at school and university level (I'm now very familiar with the OCR Latin syllabus); I've introduced others, who wished to explore beyond their prescribed syllabus, to new areas of literature; and with others I've worked on more wide-ranging ways to deepen literary analysis or approach translation.

I should probably add that my language work with school students has almost exclusively involved tackling the inadequacies of the confounded Cambridge Latin Course! This seems to be taught in virtually every school but seemingly never elects to teach grammar, which I find utterly bizarre. If you're a victim of this clueless course I'm more than happy to help!

In terms of English tuition, I've been fortunate enough to have a similarly broad range of tutees, at GCSE, A level, and university standard, though a high proportion have been Oxbridge candidates.

Some references from previous tutees below:

Naomi, A Level Latin and Greek (2013)

Ed,

Sorry it's so early but I just thought I'd let you know I got my Cambridge grades! Thank you so much for everything once again!

Neirin, Latin GCSE (2013)

Hello Ed. We are so delighted with Neirin's results, absolutely fabulous. And who would have thought - an A star in Latin! Thank you for all your effort and encouragement. He couldn't have done it without you. Enjoy the rest of the summer and good luck with the writing.

Katie, Oxbridge Ancient Greek (2013)

Ed's work with Katie has been completely outstanding. I think we were asking for something quite demanding, a combination of literature and language, with inspiration to boot, and he delivered it superbly. Katie was super-enthused by his approach. I think they both thoroughly enjoyed the classes (indeed from the sound of it I would have enjoyed them myself!) Ed has a combination of intellect, passion and (as far as I can judge) a real feel for the texts!

Zac, Scholarship Latin (2014)

Ed has been tutoring our 11 year old for Latin scholarship papers. In 5 sessions he has taken him to a new level and has totally inspired him! We can't recommend him highly enough!...

Hiya Ed,

Thanks for the email ... got an A* in Philosophy and A's in Latin and English.

Thank you very much for all your help, couldn't have got the A without your tutoring.

Hope all goes well for you at theatre school and you're enjoying the summer.

Best wishes,

Sophie.

You're also welcome to get in touch with the Head of Classics at Clifton College, Mr Huntington, who employed me at the school between 2009 and 2011.

Tutoring Approach:

I think it's impossible to pin down a sure-fire method of effective tutoring for any given person. People are different, and different methods work with different people.

That said, I am a firm believer that you cannot simply speak at someone. Learning has to be an active process, and I think there has to be involvement from both sides for things to sink in. In this light, I do try to make things enjoyable, and also to limit shortcuts; I'm of the view that it's far better to invest the time in getting firmly to grips with a subject, be it an instance of grammar or literary concept. In the long run that is a shortcut in itself.

Personal Description:
Success is within your grasp.
Allow me to introduce myself. My name is Laurence, and I am a local private English tutor.
I have a degree in English Literature (2:1).
I am a fully qualified teacher, and have my QTS certificate (Qualified Teacher Status) to prove it.
My experience of exam marking for GCSE's, leading English Departments and being classified by Ofsted as an 'Outstanding' teacher ensures that progress is accelerated, meaningful and genuine.

Teaching Experience:

I have been Head of Department, GCSE Manager, Monitoring and Assessment Manager, a GCSE Exam marker, an A Level exam marker and I am also consistently classified as 'Outstanding' according to Ofsted requirements.

My largest concern for my students is to make sure that their confidence is built up by becoming pro-active and independent learners. All too often teachers 'spoon-feed' their students, leading them to a false sense of security in their skills, which therefore leads to poor performance in examinations.

I also view myself as an 'English Coach', as I place a very big emphasis on ensuring that students have the right frame of mind when approaching studying English. Confidence, and belief in their own ideas, is so important for students to have, and all too often this lack of confidence is instrumental in why they are not performing as they should be.

I look forward to sharing my knowledge with you and hope that it helps. My passion and focus is English, and I aim to pass this passion on to all of my students through lessons that are filled with fun, engaging discussion and exciting tasks. My particular areas of expertise is helping students to prepare for English GCSE examinations.

Tutoring Approach:

I have held the post of Head of English at a school in Staffordshire, and I have led a team of exceptional English teachers. Having held other management positions in other schools as well, with management focus on both key Stage 3 and 4, I have built up a wealth of experience and knowledge that I can now put to good use within the sphere of personal tuition.

I am also an experienced examiner, having marked for a leading exam body for five years now. This has helped me enormously to build up a very clear understanding of what exam boards require from students.

Last year's results saw a continuation of my fine record of exam success, where my class achieved 100% A-C in their GCSE examinations. My current year 11 class are predicted to have 5 A*'s, 10 A grades and fifteen B grades. This will be the finest set of English class results in the school's history.

I have built up tremendously successful working relationship with my clients, and parents who I currently work for, and worked for, have happily created testimonials for me which I would be able to provide for your perusal upon request.

Personal Description:
I am an experienced teacher with qualified teachers status, who has taught in England and abroad. I have been helping children build up the gaps in their learning level since 1994. I am able to discover various learning styles to help children improve their learning. I am currently a supply teacher teaching in Hertfordshire and in Luton. Due to my vast Experience in teaching in various schools as a supply teacher I have an in depth knowledge of the national curriculum for maths and English for key stage 1 and 2 , from years reception to year 6 and have always received positive feedback from students parents. I am a mother of two teenage boys. i now only have tuition sessions in my home. so if you are willing to travel to me i am happy to help .

Teaching Experience:

I have a BA.Ed from abroad and soon after graduation I taught English and literature for two years in a secondary school(year 8 and 9). In 2005 after I gained my PGCE primary and have been teaching in primary schools since then. , covering years 1 to 6 in various schools in london . I now teach in stevenage and surrounding towns. I have been a supply teacher and Tutor for over 10 years .

Tutoring Approach:

when teaching children on a one to one basis, I usually start by giving them a general assessment on their reading and problem solving skills. After this I am able to plan for each child on an individual basis on how to help them improve their levels and fill gaps in their learning. Due to the large number of students that i help i am not able to travel to children any longer so children come to my home for tuition but only in special circumstances do i travel to a child's home on Sundays . I normally teach the children for an hour and then give them homework for further skill practice. I also help children and parents draw up a reading and learning timetable which is very easy to follow, this has proven to be very effective in the past, in helping children become independent learners. My approach is to be friendly but professional and help children relax in order to enjoy learning.

Personal Description:
I am a German, Greek and EFL tutor, living in South East London. I have a University Degree in German Language and Literature and I am a native Greek speaker. I also have a Qualified Teacher Status from the General Teaching Council for England and Certificate of Proficiency in English from the Michigan University.

Teaching Experience:

I have 8 years of experience teaching both German and Greek in individual classes and in schools. I have prepared students for all kinds of exams and all levels. I have lots of experience with children and adults.

Tutoring Approach:

I plan all my lessons in detail, according to the students needs. I strongly believe, that a good lesson is based on the good relationship between the teacher and the student and I work hard to achieve this. My lessons always include all parts of the language: grammar, speaking, reading and writing. I do very often quick revisions, so as to make sure that my student understands everything, before I move on to other topics.

Personal Description:
My name is Andy. I finished my A-Levels in 2011 and am preparing to study German and Russian at The University of Cambridge starting in October. I excelled at languages in school, receiving an A* in German A2 and an A in French AS. Between school and university I studied at the Goethe Institute in Berlin, lived and worked in Germany for over half a year, and am now starting to learn Russian and pusuing my other interests such as computer programming. I have also travelled extensively in France and Germany.

Teaching Experience:

I have no formal teaching experience (yet!) but learning three foreign languages myself and having studied German in a class actually taught in German, I am very familiar with the aspects of language that students have difficulty with. I am always thinking of better ways to explain things than the way they were explained to me, because every student learns in their own way; this makes me well placed to teach languages, German in particular due to my recent experiences in my gap year.

Tutoring Approach:

Having only recently completed my German GCSE myself (in 2009), I am familiar with the way it is taught in school. I also had lessons from a private tutor myself in German for a year or so during secondary school, so I know the sorts of things that will complement and expand on the material taught in class.

Personal Description:
I am a mathematics teacher with eight years experience mainly at A level. However since 1993 when I began post graduate study at UCL I have always tutored at least one student either at degree level or at A level.Since 1993 I have lived and worked in London but in 2008 I also worked at the University of Warwick near Coventry for 18 months on a research fellowship. I enjoy teaching students whose main interest is mathematics and would like to pursue their studies in mathematics at a top University such as Oxford, Cambridge, Imperial, or Warwick. I have taught students who have gained entry to these institutions.

Teaching Experience:

PGCE in secondary mathematics at Goldsmiths College, University of London, 1999. Following this I taught undergraduate problems classes at LSE in 2000. In 2001 I taught for one year at Yesoday Hatorah school in Stamford Hill and was responsible for all mathematics teaching to GCSE level. From 2002 to 2008 I taught mainly A level at Ealing Independent College . I returned to teaching at Ealing Independent College in 2012 to 2014 after a break working in Coventry.

Tutoring Approach:

Getting to know the student's strengths and weaknesses. Much checking of understanding which is the main advantage of tutoring. Helping the student to plan learning for examinations. Plenty of opportunity to work through past examination papers to improve performance.

Personal Description:
I am an LSE graduate in BSc Accounting and Finance and have also obtained postgraduate qualifications in Statistics, I am currently a dedicated and passionate full-time tutor, I am passionate about my subjects and dedicated to seeing students do well.

I was privileged enough to be afforded a very good private education and originally decided to take on tutoring as an opportunity to share my knowledge with others and allow them to realise their full potential and all the other benefits of a good education.

Five main factors have contributed to my success so far namely,
- I have high expectations of myself and my students, I believe every student can achieve the best grades with the right help

- I instil confidence and a "can do" attitude in students, regularly reminding them that nothing is "hard" if you have been shown how to do it properly

- I listen to students, this keeps lessons interactive and ensures I have constants update on their thought process and current understanding

- I am relatively young so students feel comfortable engaging with me and enjoy learning from me

- I ensure continuous support for students, I make myself available for questions via phone or e-mail throughout the day to ensure the support does not end at the end of the lesson!

Teaching Experience:

I have been a private tutor for over 5 years in this time my reliability and skill has enabled me to develop a good reputation which has allowed me to have a consistent base of 15 - 20 students on a weekly basis.

I have tutored university students attending Russell group universities such as Queen Mary and Warwick and have taught GCSEs and A-levels across all major exam boards including AQA, Edexcel, OCR and iGCSE. Additionally I have had students admitted to prestigious private schools such as Eltham College and Bromley High after excelling in their 11+ exams.

Career Highlights!

- Academic Year 2011 - 2012 I helped a student who was predicted a C grade at GCSE to achieve a coveted place at Eltham College after passing a difficult 16+ exam, we then continued to work together to secure an A grade at GCSE

- Academic year 2012 - 2013 I helped a student who scored a D grade at AS Economics achieve an A grade at A2 level after 8 months of tuition. He was the only student to score an A grade in his school since 2007.

- Academic Year 2013 - 2014 I helped a student who scored a C grade at AS Economics achieve an A grade at A2 Economics with an impressive 97% in Unit 1, 99% in Unit 2 and 100% in Unit 3. He had also had three previous tutors who he was dissatisfied with before coming to me.

- Academic Year 2015 - 2016 I help a student who had achieved a B in AS Economics go on to achieve an A* in A2 Economics with a 95% average across the unit 3 and 4 exams.

Tutoring Approach:

My teaching approach embodies a long term approach to learning I teach students in a way which will allow them to be successful in higher education as well as their more short term exams. I also try to make students more confident in their abilities overall not just the material I teach.

I strongly believe that a solid understanding of basic principles is the foundation to success in academic study. I concentrate a lot of time and energy on instilling these basic principles in students.

I am also a strong believer in understanding over 'rope learning' I ensure that pupils understand what they are doing and why they are doing it, never encouraging them to simply regurgitate what they have seen previously.

I also encourage practical understanding of concepts frequently referencing real world examples and using objects to illustrate theory as I recognise that theory on its own given no relevance is harder to remember. Supplementary to this I also relate teaching material to potential job roles and tasks which I have knowledge of (mostly Banking or Business related) in order communicate usefulness to students and keep things interesting.

Finally I believe teaching successfully is ultimately about listening to your students I constantly encourage students to question things and express anything they don't understand or are not too sure of. If a student looks unsure or hesitant about something I will ask open questions or get them to explain concepts to me in order to fully grasp their understanding. This also helps build their confidence and ability to express themselves accurately.

Personal Description:
Hello there! My name is Sam and I'm a full time private tutor who has moved back to London this year. I completed a master's degree in maths at Leeds University and have been teaching ever since. I'm still very passionate about maths and am applying for a PhD to start in the next academic year. My personal time is taken up by studying the areas of maths I want to pursue (category theory and topos theory), learning more undergraduate maths courses so that I can tutor a wider number of areas, rock climbing, highlining and playing gigs. I also have a few maths related side projects such as co-writing a maths textbook aimed at those who have just finished their A levels, and error checking/giving feedback for a soon-to-be published book on topos theory by a researcher in Canada. I enjoy a productive life focussed around my passions of which teaching comes first, as I find nothing more satisfying than helping people and seeing their grades grow. I really appreciate you taking the time to see what I have to offer as a tutor, and hope to hear from you soon.

Teaching Experience:

Teaching in a variety of different areas and environments has been my primary source of work for nearly 8 years now. For the past year and a half since I finished my masters I have been a full time private tutor of maths, predominately working in Leeds. The variety of levels I've had the opportunity to teach has been exceptional. I have taught at GCSE, As, A and further maths level for school level maths along with teaching at every level of undergraduate mathematics, teaching both on a one to one basis and conducting group tutorials with groups of 20 second year students. In particular, it has been deeply gratifying to help foreign students secure undergraduate positions and students with health issues who have needed extra assistance due to being absent from school.
During my degree, I held weekly tutorials for the lower years and gave informal guitar lessons. During my gap year, I worked for six days a week as a climbing instructor for most of the year and taught guitar on my day off. It was over my A level years that I got my first teaching experience as a piano teacher.

Tutoring Approach:

One great difference and indeed benefit of being a private tutor over a teacher is the need to adapt to each individual student. I am in the great position of being able to focus on one student per lesson, and I wouldn't be doing the best work I can if I didn't take advantage of this. My style of teaching therefore revolves around learning from each lesson about the student's evolving strengths and weaknesses, so that I can focus my lesson planning around them for our next meeting. Along with this, I try to encourage students with positive reinforcement. Frankly speaking, maths is a scary subject for a lot of people and I have found that increasing a student's confidence in their ability does wonders for their grades, proving their confidence right. Patience and understanding are key to this form of encouragement. On top of all this, I have to take into account what level the student is studying at. Maths is a very different beast every single year, the challenge of understanding quadratic equations for the first time is very different in nature to understanding quotient groups for the first time, and so I change how I teach depending on the level and age of the student.

Personal Description:
Hi, I'm Suzanne and I have over 10 years of experience studying and working in UK universities. I have undergraduate and masters degrees in Psychology, and completed my PhD in Biological Anthropology in 2014. I am interested in all aspects of human evolution ranging from cognition and biology to politics and philosophy. My academic research focuses on comparative cognition - using behavioural studies of other species of primate to gain insight into how modern humans evolved - and included two years of fieldwork with wild primates in Gashaka Gumti National Park in Nigeria.

While I love working with non-human primates, I am also interested in science communication and have worked on projects ranging from ongoing education work with UCL and ZSL London Zoo to stand up comedy to at Edinburgh Festival.

Teaching Experience:

I am an Associate Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, and have taught undergraduate and postgraduate courses at University College London, including 'Approaches to Knowledge', a foundation module aimed at developing critical thinking and a range of study skills, and 'Evolution and the Human Condition'. The latter is a second year undergraduate course for which I co-wrote the syllabus and taught, covering various aspects of evolutionary theory in biology, chemistry and philosophy. I also have experience designing and grading assessments at degree level, and can offer insight into what examiners are looking for when grading essays.

Outside of the University environment, I have previously tutored masters students in Psychology and Anthropology, and worked as an outreach lecturer visiting schools and delivering workshops for children aged 12-17.

Student Testimonials:

"I cannot express highly enough how supportive Suzanne has been. I employed her help for my final degree year after receiving very poor level of feedback from my own university and she has not disappointed. Quick to respond to any concern I have in a supportive and guiding way, Suzanne has been a lifeline for me. Suzanne explains difficult concepts in an easy-to-understand manner. Her feedback is fantastic, critical but in a supportive and guiding way that has enabled my development and improvement."
- Current undergraduate student

"The quality of staff on the course was far above the standard of many courses on offer, and size of classes conducive to their exuberance. Consequently, these were among the best if not the best I've had."
- Former undergraduate student

"I was very happy with my seminar as she listened to what we needed each week and stuck to a loose plan, rather than keeping a strict plan to cover each week"
- Former undergraduate student

Tutoring Approach:

I emphasise the critical thinking and writing skills that enable students not only to obtain higher grades, but also to continue to progress their studies outside of tutoring sessions.

While individual sessions are relaxed and discussion and debate around study topics is encouraged, I ask students to define a specific aim in their first session so that I can ensure that we are progressing towards that goal in subsequent meetings. If working towards an exam or assignment deadline, I request the course syllabus to ensure the best results, and have successfully helped students to obtain high grades using this approach in the past.

Once expectations have been established, there is a lot of room for flexibility such as the inclusion of field trips to exhibitions and public lectures that are relevant to the topic of study if students wish to broaden their approach to academic work.
