Personal Description:
I am just about to begin my final year at St John's College, Oxford University, after which I shall have completed my Master of Chemistry degree. Having achieved 10A* grades at GCSE and 5 A's at A-level, including a number of awards for the top marks nationally in Chemistry, Biology and Classical Civilisation, I feel that I will be able to use my academic abilities to bring out the best in others who are striving to succeed, and hopefully encourage them to see their studies with the same passion and motivation as I have always done.

I am a keen sportswoman and musician, having competed nationally in various swimming competitions and played in a number of orchestras and ensembles. The teamwork and determination this has given me has helped with my studies and also contributes to the strong inter-personal skills I feel I have developed.

I am reliable, honest and hardworking, but always strive to bring out the best in others, whatever aspect of their life this may relate to. I enjoy variety in my life, and feel that my interests outside of my studies have helped to keep a balanced yet focused mind, but always understanding that my academics are my priority. I recently completed a six-month internship in Investment Banking in London with JPMorgan, which has helped to open my eyes to the world post-study and has helped to further develop my outlook on academia ad current issues.

I am eager to push myself to new limits, and hence combined my interest in charity work with my sporting abilities by swimming from Europe to Africa in September 2008 for World Cancer Research.

Teaching Experience:

I have a vast and varied amount of experience in both tutoring and interview coaching. Whilst at school, I mentored younger students up to GCSE and A Level standard in Chemistry, Biology, Physics, Maths and Latin.

I held revision classes at lunchtime for GCSE students in Chemistry and Biology, devising the lesson plans myself and constructing detailed revision notes and practice question/answer booklets for all students. I also tutored students on a one-on-one basis in a variety of subjects by requests from teachers and also students themselves.

My willingness to give up my lunch-hours and freetime after school, which was minimal, should hopefully show my dedication to helping others to the best of my ability.

Whilst I have been at University, I have tutored a number of students of various levels. This includes those wishing to apply to Oxford, in which case I have given over 100 hours of private tuition sessions and advanced Chemistry coaching to help with interview preparations. I have also conducted over 300 mock interviews for a variety of subjects, including Chemistry, Biology, Mathematics, Physics, Medicine, Engineering, Economics and Natural Sciences.

I am very proud to say that all those students that I have closely tutored were give offers from Oxford, and those I tutored during my time at school achieved much higher than their predicted grades; most successfully gaining A and A* grades in what were considered to be their 'weaker subjects'.

Tutoring Approach:

As I hope to have illustrated, I am highly devoted to bringing out the best in all fellow students and tutees and strive for the optimum results 100% of the time. I am patient, relaxed and approachable, which I feel are all essential qualities a tutor should possess.

I am focused and motivated and reflect this attitude upon my students and tutees, urging them to approach their work in the same way. I feel that one of my greatest strengths is my ability to regonise the individual needs of each student and tailor all tutoring towards their specific needs. Whether this is the way in which I approach the tutorial sessions or the manner in which I present the context and information, individuality is an extremely important aspect to the success of each student and I take a great deal of time tailoring each programme accordingly.

I like to create a personal yet professional relationship with each student so that they should feel at ease talking to me if they continue to face problems with their studies.

PLEASE NOTE
I will be available for tutoring in Birmingham also.

Personal Description:
I am passionate about Geography! I believe it is THE subject that defines our era.
This philosophy informs my approach to teaching vibrant, exciting student-friendly lessons in school and similar sessions in the tutoring experience.
My pre-teaching background in both the media industry and working for a international non-governmental organisation have provided me with a wealth of case studies and experiences that bring to life my teaching and tutoring.
I completed my degree only two years ago, so my knowledge base, specialising in the human and environmental geographies, is vast and up-to-date.

Teaching Experience:

I have been teaching in Watford's best state school for three years. Prior to this I was the director of education at an established UK children's charity.
During my brief career to date I have been quick to establish myself as a dynamic, confident and compelling teacher. Improving all the time, my successful engagement with students is evidenced by over 70% take up of GCSE by my two year 9 groups, impressive GCSE results (all A*- C over two consecutive years) and excellent AS level results - average UMS around 90/100.
I develop student-friendly resources that have been adopted across the department by other colleagues. I lead the department on many ICT-related developments.
In this short time I have experienced a range of school activities - from organising field trips to form tutorship.
Some quotes from my ongoing assessment:
"JC was able to bring in a wide range of specific examples to complement both his and student's points"
"You questioned and answered with confidence"
"I watched you teaching this aspect of phys geog six months ago and there is no comparison between your confidence with the material then and now - very good"
"Many of the facts came from pupils but Julian added much more and appeared very confident with the knowledge of the topic."

Tutoring Approach:

Now looking for clients for September 2010.
For some students, gaining confidence with many of the concepts and ideas presented in geography at Key Stage 4 or 5 is difficult - especially considering the pressures of coursework, ongoing assessment and the natural workload provided by other subjects. Yet these concepts underpin much of the reality that geography deals with.
I have worked successfully with boys and girls at GCSE, AS and A2 level over the last two years, raising attainment in all cases.
My approach to tutoring is to enthuse the often overwhelmed student first and foremost with 'real', accessible geography. By using interactive ICT-based resources and practical assessment tools such as course guides, question mark schemes and exemplar work, the student can access previously hard-to-grasp material, and gain a critical understanding of the assessment process.
My belief is that you would not attempt to fix a car without instructions. I help the student interpret the manual to their course so they themselves can get behind the wheel and drive to success!

Personal Description:
I love all the main subjects in a proper curriculum! I was originally born in Canada, and have been living in the UK for twenty-three years (my parents brought me over as a teenager). I went to a Canadian high-school, took GSCE maths and A levels in North Wales, and went on to study in Manchester. I am a real teacher! I am fascinated with teaching a subject in the most effective way, whatever the level. This includes such ideas as student motivation and hierarchical order of subject matter. I think that there is such a thing as a teaching personality and that the essential qualities are benevolence, charisma, and humour; I have these qualities. I find it easy to befriend my students, gain their trust, while still keeping a pleasant, authoritative detachment. I like children: I am charmed by their enthusiasm, openness, and receptiveness.

Teaching Experience:

I have been a tutor for the past eleven years. In terms of classroom experience, I have held positions in Montessori schools (nursery), and have been a substitute teacher (or "cover supervisor") covering all subjects in English comprehensive schools.

Tutoring Approach:

The idea of hierarchy is essential to my teaching. One must learn from the concrete to the abstract in order to have one's knowledge grounded in reality, as opposed to disjointed, floating ideas. The subject of history, aside from being an essential subject in itself, is a helpful pedagogical tool. History provides a natural hierarchy for the learning of mathematics and the sciences. History also provides a background and context for the appreciation of literature.

Personal Description:
I am passionate about mathematics, physics, philosophy and education in general. Knowledge is liberating and these subjects especially open many doors. Mathematics, physics and philosophy are not easy and require a willingness to work hard, but I strongly believe that anyone can get to grips with them if given the correct guidance. Most often the problem is not the student but a poor teacher, unresolved conceptual difficulties or lack of motivation. I want to fix these issues for you.

About myself: Having just finished my Master's degree, I am spending this academic year paying off student loans, improving my tutoring skills, continuing my research into quantum computing while looking for a PhD, working on my creative writing and hopefully travelling to Japan to practice my Japanese language skills and martial arts.

Why is tutoring important to me? Firstly, I feel it is my responsibility to pass on the knowledge and skills I have attained; secondly, I find it satisfying to help others learn and achieve what they did not think possible; and finally, I think one of the best ways to assess your own understanding of a subject is to teach it; we learn the most about our areas of expertise when we try convey their concepts and methods to an audience.

Teaching Experience:

I have tutored fifteen students privately over the past two years, improving their results in all cases.

Tutoring Approach:

My tutoring includes:

- free initial consultation with needs assessment and lesson
- encouragement of free thinking
- varying teaching methods depending on what the student is most receptive to including: problem based learning, discourse, traditional exercises, experiments, lectures
- exam preparation
- confidence building
- resolution of conceptual difficulties
- helping with homework
- homework marking
- undergraduate and postgraduate application advice
- interview advice at undergraduate and postgraduate levels
- email contact throughout the week to resolve your problems as an when they arise
- group tuition

Please note (a) while I am based in Hackney, I will cover central and South London; (b) I can offer reductions for group sessions.
