At the academic skills pre-sessional courses at the University of Birmingham in 2012-2016 I gained even deeper experience supporting individual students with writing within very constrained time-limits. I guided all to success at their final assessments. I have had very positive feedback and comments of appreciation.

I have taught in various set-ups - whole class, pair work, group work, or one-to-one sessions. I am deeply interested in each student's individual learning needs and progress and one of my major strengths is differentiation. I sometimes prepare material at 4 levels of differentiation for a single class or small group. I use supportive strategies to boost students' confidence, at the same time challenging learners to achieve beyond their own expectations. I approach intense 1-to-1 sessions with the appropriate dynamics.

I am prepared to go beyond my 'job description' duties to help students with 'special needs'. I am interested in their individual circumstances and take them into account, where appropriate. I prepare resources to address their personal needs and interests. I review their progress and involve them in self-assessment towards autonomy of learning. I am familiar with the 'Assessment for Learning' policy and competent with implementing it widely.

I have worked successfully with students with dyslexia. At secondary school, one of my 'high-ability' dyslexic students scored an 'A' grade at her English GCSE, while another participated in a poetry competition. I have had success teaching students with autism and Asperger's as well.

I invest all of myself in my teaching. I am a highly trusted professional and have an exceptional rapport with my students. I am often quoted as a preferred tutor, who 'has the best way of explaining things' and 'is very patient, friendly and cheerful'. All students of mine - regardless whether at school, college or university - progressed by at least one level (even at short-term courses). A student with a debilitating illness on the BME, predicted to fail the course, not only passed it under my guidance, but achieved grades higher than his required level. In my 15-year teaching career I have never failed a student. I have achieved outstanding results at OFSTED observations. My latest annual lesson observation at BMETC was graded 'OUTSTANDING' and so was my performance at NAVITAS earlier this year. Another observation at BCU was unofficially deemed as 'the best on the course'. I have been invited to share exceptional ideas at training events and have also participated in numerous training activities at schools, colleges and universities. I often opt to peer-observe colleagues, to learn from their teaching styles.

Some more examples from my practice: a class of illiterate Yemeni housewives at BMETC, 2011, achieved a 100% pass at their ESOL exams, while 'advanced' international students at the BME, 2012 achieved some of the highest grades on the course. I have been successful dealing with pupils with behavioural problems at Harborne Hill School. Many reported an increasingly positive attitude to learning. I am a creative teacher and try to interest and enthuse students, so that they enjoy learning and celebrate their achievements.

Tutoring Approach:

First I negotiate the times and modes of tutoring with the parents of my potential pupil and agree on fees.
Then I organise a free initial meeting with the pupil and their parents, where I try to establish raport with the pupil. It is important, especially for children, to 'get a feel' of the new tutor and see if they can feel comfortable with her.
Then I try to access as much information as possible from the parents and the child about their progress at school and their attitude to school. If possible, I wish to see samples of the child's school work, or hear anything teachers have said/written about their progress.
During the first lesson I conduct an informal assessment of the pupil's skills - give them a piece of text to read, or free writing or short composition, or a selection of Maths problems to solve. When I get a clear picture of where my pupil stands with a certain skill, I create a short-term plan of work with them. I normally bring materials with me and do not ask parents to buy additional materials. If the parent wishes me to follow a certain self- help book, I am happy to oblige.
I update parents regularly of their child's progress - I try to do it after every lesson. I normally leave homework, designed to consolidate the material covered in the lesson, or develop their skills further. I wish parents to be involved as much as possible with helping or monitoring the completion of the homework.
I try to show my pupils as much respect as possible and affirm them as individuals. I acknowledge their birthdays, Christmas, or other family celebrations.
The parents can terminate the service at any time, with only one week notice.

I taught Mandarin at Newcastle University Business School in the 1990s, when I also taught business people in companies such as Yves St. Laurent, both one-to-one and in small groups. I also gave supplementary tuition to British undergraduates in reading, writing, listening and speaking Mandarin, on a one-to-one basis.
I taught Mandarin in Hong Kong from 2000 to 2009, to all age groups, from toddlers to retirees, both privately and in companies; I taught both Cantonese speakers and non-Chinese English speakers. I also taught at the Hong Kong Open University.

Tutoring Approach:

I have worked on one-to-one and small group teaching: I like an interactive situation where tutor and student work out the student's needs together, and the tutor helps the student to meet his/her goals by acting as facilitator and learning advisor.

With my current online students (GCSE Maths) after some initial trepidation and months of preparation, I find it's easy to develop the same working relationship with parent and student - as I do in face - to - face, something I was sceptical about - at first, but not any more.

We use Skype for conversation. It's just like talking to parents and student around the same kitchen table! I can still share my qualifications, my certificates, my CRB / DBS, my references, and discuss the student's educational needs, just as I do face - to - face.

We also use and share an interactive online whiteboard, just like a sheet of paper between us, and of course screen - sharing technology to bring our tuition notes to the home of the student.
The student does not have to download anything to his / her computer (just Skype for free).
I use a graphics tablet and stylus to write on the whiteboard, and the student can write on it too.
We try to make the online learning experience and working relationship as similar as possible to the face - to - face experience and relationship.
It is an excellent option when travel distance is a problem OR if you would like sessions that are shorter than an hour.

Personal Description:
I got a Masters Degree in Engineering and PGCE in Secondary Mathematics. This provided me with the knowledge and ability to teach up to A-Level Mathematics, including all Core modules, Further Mathematics, Mechanics, Statistics and Decision mathematics. I have been offering private tuition for 5 years.

Teaching Experience:

I have 6 years maths teaching experience in secondary school and six-form college and 12 years teaching experience in University. I have been providing one-to-one and small group tuition since 2007. 100% of my GCSE and A level private tutoring students have achieved grade B or above.

Tutoring Approach:

My approach to one-to-one tuition is always to begin with identifying the pupil's areas of strengths and weaknesses and using this information to set targets that are in-line with the aim of the tuition sessions. I have high expectations of all my students and always encourage a pupil to make the most out of every session and achieve the best they can. I also make myself available via skype for any questions they may have.

Personal Description:
I am 28 years old and have just finished my fifth year of teaching. The first four of those years were in a successful Birmingham grammar school and have just completed my first year at one of Bath's top school. My own education was received at a mixed comprehensive school in Wiltshire, after which I attended the University of Birmingham where I studied mathematics. I have recently moved back to the area after eight years in Birmingham, living with my wife and 4 year old labrador. Amongst other interests, I am always looking to stretch myself and keep my interest in mathematics and education alive by reading literature (particularly by Marcus du Sautoy) and attending seminars by the Association of Teachers of Mathematics (ATM) and other such organisations linked with various universities.

Teaching Experience:

The majority of my teaching so far was at a school within the King Edward VI consortium in Birmingham, teaching boys in KS3 and KS4, the majority of whom have target grades of A/A*. Around 35% of my timetable has been teaching KS5, both years 12 and 13. I have taught C1-4, S1 and M1. I also have experience teaching a range of abilities, from SEN to A/A* students at two co-educational, OFSTED rated outstanding schools in Birmingham. I also have experience of tutoring trainee teachers preparing for their QTS tests and also those preparing for the King Edward's entrance exam. I have lead the development of ICT/Web based learning for my department and have mentored trainee teachers and NQTs. During my four years in Birmingham I was appointed Head of House and Head of Year 7. The house I took charge of had lost both the sporting and academic competitions every year for 10 years. After two years in charge, my house were the winners of the academic competion (consisting of 15 events) which I believe is testament to my ability for to motivate student. During my first year in Bath I have aided in the running of a successful department and have added experience of teaching further mathematics to year 13 students. The modules I taught were FP1 and S2 and I am due to teach M2 next year.

Tutoring Approach:

I am a firm believer that anyone, of any age and ability, can learn mathematics and learn it well. The key is finding a medium that relates to the student. I am willing to try a range of different teaching methods to ensure that all of my students understand the concepts and ideas that they are being taught. What I will always do is give a relavance and a meaning to whatever I am teaching. That way, I believe the learning is more engaging, more enjoyable and therefore will be of a higher quality. These beliefs, coupled with a laid back and likeable nature mean I create a positive relationship with all of my students, a relationship that is vital for good teaching.

Personal Description:
I am 53 years old, have lived in Manchester all of my life (except for a brief time in Glasgow where I met my wife!) We have five children and usually have one or two foster children with us. We love to do stuff together; camping, fishing, walking, canoeing, you name it, we'll have tried it. By my friends I am known as Bar-B-Q Steve. To my tutees I'm known by a variety of names but mainly as the guy who helped them get where they wanted to get to. They all started in Manchester but are now truly all over the world doing some amazing things; this brings me the greatest pleasure.

Teaching Experience:

I gained Qualified Teaching Status (QTS) in 1987. Since then I have worked in both High School teaching Physics and in Primary School as a class teacher. Five years ago I further qualified as a specialist maths intervention teacher. I presently work at a Primary School running maths intervention programs. I have received and given training in the new 2014 National Curriculum and am therefore aware of new approaches being used by schools.

Tutoring Approach:

Being a current school teacher, I am always keen to find a strategy that fits alongside what your child's school is providing. This I do by studying materials your child brings home, observing strategies which your child uses and occasionally by speaking to schools. I believe lessons should be both educational and enjoyable. There is a pleasure in self-improvement which I will want to build into your child so that they grow in self-confidence through learning.
