Personal Description:
Hello,

I am Alfiya. I am a professional, qualified and experienced tutor in individual and group Russian teaching. I have been in Edinburgh for almost 11 years and have been a tutor in Russian, freelance interpreter and translator for all this time. During my tutoring career I have assisted almost 250 learners with teaching Russian. I like communicating and meeting new people. I'm friendly, easy-going, open, quick-minded. In my free time I like reading, learning about different cultures, going in for sport, socialising.

Teaching Experience:

I graduated from Irkutsk State Linguistic University in Russia in 1996. Had been teaching English for Russian students and Russian for foreign students at Kazan State University for 15 years (Russia). My specialities are: Russian from Elementary to Advanced.

In 1999 I studied at the Open Society Institute-Samara where I attended Soros Intensive Teacher Training Course for University Instructors in Samara Russia. In 2000 I finished the course in 'Improvement of Professional Skills on Teaching Methodology of Foreign Languages' at Kazan State University in Russia. In 2005 I attended the Conversational Spanish course in Spanish Centre of Education and Culture at Kazan State University. Back to Russia I worked as a senoir lecturer in English and Russian at Kazan State University. I participated as a tutor in English in the Presidential Programme of Russia by giving lectures on Business English for top managers, directors of companies and firms and businessmen to take part in international business as Russia opened up to worldwide and free trade. 10 of my former students went onto internships in Greece, Italy, Denmark, Germany and Japan after finishing this programme. I am the author of four scientific publications in the field of linguistic relations in Russian, English and Tatar.

While living in the UK I have worked as a freelance tutor and translator for Scottish&Newcastle, Scottish Parliament, NHS and Rudolf Steiner School. I am really proud of the fact that among my students are people of different ages, knowledge of Russian and purposes of learning it and who are professionals in different fields for example in language and science teaching, sales and marketing, medical research, social work, to name just a few.

I have completed successfully the HNC and HND Tourism course at Edinburgh college.

Tutoring Approach:

Always try to make students interested in the subject I teach. Create a ftiendly and an encouraging learning environment. Not afraid to praise them even if they do not get immediate good results. Tend to get feedback from them. Plan carefully each lesson. Use the Internet and PC in preparing for lessons. Try to make lessons interesting, various by combining different aspects of learning a language: Grammar, Vocabulary, Listening, Speaking, Writing and Reading. Each course that you will attend is tailored to your needs and depends on your level of knowing Russian and your purpose of learning. I teach Russian through the Skype system as well. Each month organise Russian Converstaion Club for my students to help them learn some more about Russia apart from lessons. We discuss various topics in Russian (the topic of each session is given in advance), do different activities based on the theme of the session. The aim of Russian Conversation Club is to improve Russian conversational skills of my students and help them learn more about Russian culture and history.

Personal Description:
Hello! My name is Ewa and I am passionate about learning and teaching languages. I was born and raised in Poland where I used to live until I discovered my interest for different cultures and languages. I have studied in France, travelled and worked in Poland, France, Italy and England and finally settled a few years ago in North Wales. Speaking languages has influenced my whole life! As a tutor, I teach my native Polish and also French, Spanish and Italian. I really enjoy working with people from different cultural backgrounds and showing them that languages, especially Polish, are not so difficult as it seems!

Since an early age I wanted to be a teacher, making my school and university choices in education and with my added passion for languages, today I am a professionally fulfilled person doing what I love the most - teaching languages!

I truly enjoy all aspects of teaching and I am convinced that my own passion for the languages can inspire and motivate my students to love learning languages as I do. With my strong knowledge of the subject, professional and personal attributes, I could certainly help you to meet your language needs.

Teaching Experience:

Reflecting on my work history, the experience I gained as a language teacher has had the most significant impact on my career development giving me the most professional satisfaction. University studies in education for a Master's degree in Modern Languages and multiple stays in France enabled me to acquire native level spoken French. Following my passion for languages, I became enthusiastic about the Spanish and Italian cultures and tongues. Thanks to languages courses and opportunity to polish my communication skills in commercial contact with native speakers, I developed a high fluency level.

I started my professional career teaching French in a Polish high school where my performance was highly praised not only for encouraging young people to learn languages and promoting plurilingualism but also for my learner-centred teaching approach.

On arrival in England, I achieved Qualified Teacher Status in recognition of my overseas qualifications. I had an opportunity to teach French to children in after school classes, tutoring in French and Spanish to GCSE students and helping adults to meet their languages goals in French, Spanish, Italian, and Polish.

Making the transition between different audiences allowed me to be more adaptable, experienced in tailoring my teaching to suit any level and today I feel very confident delivering lessons to a range of ages from children to adults.

In addition to tutoring, currently, I teach at the University of Chester to adults during evening classes and in various Educational and Cooperate environments.

Tutoring Approach:

As a language teacher, I am always deeply involved in planning and preparation which allows me to deliver lessons to the highest standards. I use a variety of teaching methods, effective materials, and resources, giving learners opportunities to develop and practice their skills. I pay attention to teaching within a cultural context and being very creative I enjoy sourcing materials, making the learning process challenging and yet enjoyable. I am a huge advocate of using modern day technologies in the teaching and learning the process.

In my teaching career, I taught languages to a different range of ages, however, my approach is to look at my learners individually, from children to adults and tailor my teaching to personal needs. Although being a teacher can be a demanding career, the joy of seeing my learners' progress in their linguistic achievements is a highly satisfying reward.

Being myself a keen language learner, I perfectly understand how challenging it can be, acquiring a new language. During our first taster session that I offer for free, I would assess your knowledge to identify your language level, learning style, motivation and according to your expectations I would propose a plan and methods we could use to achieve your language goals.

I am looking forward to helping you build your confidence in speaking languages!

Personal Description:
I am a Dedicated, resourceful and innovative Teacher with more than 3 yrs of teaching experience at University level & more than 3 years of tutoring in the UK.Teaching is my passion which you'll find out on meeting & its something which I consider a way of giving back to the society.

Teaching Experience:

I have worked as a Lecturer in Engineering Institute teaching relevant subjects for 3 years .

I have been tutoring in the UK for more than 3 years now & during this time have carved a niche among my students for being approachable & having a sound understanding of the subjects & helping them in all possible ways.

I am a very patient & child friendly person.

As a Tutor , I have helped students from Primary to GCSE level with Maths ,Science & English preparing for a competitive exam & excel in the subject. I try & make learning fun while the students learn for life.Students & parents who are dedicated to learning motivate me to do better.
I have made permanent & good relations with my clients with my innovative techniques & dedication.

I also undertake lessons during school time (10am-14:00pm) for homeschooled children & other students who might need help during this time.

I also undertake Hindi language lessons. Also, offering group lessons.
All lessons are conducted from my home. Can travel in Milton Keynes For small extra charge(subject to availability).

Tutoring Approach:

Tutoring Approach
I feel that having a good foundation to any subject is the way to go thus this would usually where I begin. If a student has a good understanding of the basics in any subject, more complicated details will seem much easier; like building blocks. After this, a focus on the weaker areas would then be applied to reinforce the student's understanding.

To begin, I start with revision techniques, worksheets and make new, very detailed, class/revision notes with my students. After developing a solid understanding, I begin with exam questions . Every lesson I give them homework. Essentially, what I offer are school lessons that are more detailed and focused than what they receive in school. Through these methods, I am able to thoroughly assess a student's abilities, increase them and hopefully up their grades.

My innovative pedagogies and teaching style and teacher friendly approach makes the concepts easy and passion and love for teaching has made me popular among my students

Personal Description:
I'm a 23-year-old Physics graduate from Cambridge University living in South London. I received a first in Natural Sciences (specialising in Physics in the final two years) in my finals in May 2014. I went to school at Alleyn's Independent School in South London where I was School Captain and an academic scholar. I attained 10 A*s at GCSE, 4 A*s at A level (in Physics, Chemistry, Maths and Further Maths) and 5 As at AS level (in the above subjects and English). I taught myself the A2 Further Maths syllabus and got full marks in Chemistry.

Teaching Experience:

I've worked regularly as a tutor over the last five years and have approximately 800 hrs of one-to-one lesson experience with an age range of 5-19. I have taught over 30 students in total and at least 20 of those for longer than six months so can provide multiple references. I have tutored the following subjects:

A-Level: Chemistry, Mathematics, Further Mathematics, Physics
GCSE: Maths, Sciences (single, double and triple), English.
Public and Grammar school entrance examinations: 7+, 9+, 11+, 13+ (including Eton Scholarship exam)

Tutoring Approach:

The thing that makes one-on-one tutorials more effective than a group lesson is the potential for them to be student led. I try not to talk too much but instead favour practicing questions (particularly in mathematics) and getting the student to explain topics with a view to pin-pointing gaps in understanding. This way I add to what the student already knows rather than lecturing on what they may already understand.

I try and vary the sessions, particularly with younger students, in order to maintain concentration levels throughout. For example, in GCSE maths and science lessons I will try to work in a quiz mid-way through the lesson to avoid boredom. I like to conduct relaxed and informal lessons because I think a student is far more likely to learn when they are not stressed.

Personal Description:
I'm a flexible, energetic and dynamic tutor offering lessons in English, Violin and 11+ to students from primary age to A-level and beyond. I have a passion for English literature and music, and I love to teach.

As I have been finishing my PhD, I have gradually been taking on more pupils for private tuition. I specialize in bringing the academic study of English to life for school students by combining a dynamic and accessible approach with the exciting ideas and research I have experienced at university level.

Teaching Experience:

I have a range of classroom and 1-to-1 teaching experience. As an English tutor, I have worked with a range of students from primary to PhD level. I am experienced at preparing students for exams, 11+ and university entrance, including intensive revision work to prepare students for a particular exam.
I have also delivered the GCSE English curriculum to a home-schooled pupil as her only English teacher. At the University of St Andrews, I was employed for 3 years as a tutor for undergraduate students in the English and Music departments. Through my tutorials on essay writing skills, I was able to significantly improve the marks of my cohort of students, and I teach the same techniques to my pupils at school stage. After qualifying with the widely recognized CELTA certificate in English Language Teaching, I spent several summers teaching English language to classes of children and teenagers aged from 10 to 18.

Tutoring Approach:

Learning with a tutor can be much, much more fun than learning in school! And since literature is all about life, learning to critically read and interpret literary texts, whether at GCSE or undergraduate level, will open your eyes to look at the world in a new way. I love the fact that through my experience of university life as a student and teacher, I can fast-track my school-aged pupils to the skills and ideas they'll need at university and beyond. The study of English literature at university is a different world to that at school - I wish I had known at school how rich and interesting the subject was. Through my teaching, I aim to inspire my students not only to understand and appreciate the great works of literature that they study, but to use them to understand big ideas about history and society.

I am also keenly aware of the requirements of the various exam boards, and I tailor my approach to developing skills to excel in particular exams and beyond. I particularly enjoy preparing students for exams such as GCSE and A-level, and I am equally at home providing challenging debate to stretch the most gifted and talented pupils, or inspiring enthusiasm in students who want to improve their grades. One of the best things about private tuition is seeing my pupils develop their confidence, whether in musical performance or tackling the big ideas in works of literature.

As a violin teacher, I love to teach beginners of any age, but particularly young children. My lessons are lively, interactive and engaging, developing all-round musical ability in a way that is fun and motivating. I can also act as a practice buddy for any instrument, and assist with reading music, sight-reading, music theory and aural training skills.

Personal Description:
I am a recently retired Clinical Scientists (registered). I am married with a son and I am a youthful 67 year old with an 8 years old son! We are a non smoking family. My involvement with "mathematics", at various levels, dates back to when I left secondary school (Blackpool) in 1964 and worked for the Civil Service for 5 years. I was in an accounts division and passed two additional maths (and eventually English!) O'Levels via evening classes as well as enjoying the 60s and playing bass guitar in local groups. I took a 1 year full time A''Level course (Maths, Further Maths and Physics) and subsequently read for a Mathematics degree (Physics subsid.) at the University of Nottingham (1970-73). During this time, I had 3 vacation studentships with different departments of the Scientific Civil Service. After graduating, I worked for around 15 years as a computer programmer / analyst during which time I passed an HND in Computer Studies (University of the South Bank, London). Although I was 40 years old when I was made redundant from a communications company, I decide to make a significant career change and return to my "roots" and look for scientific work where my mathematical skills would be better used. After 2 years as a Medical Laboratory Scientific Officer in the lung function laboratory at the Royal Brompton, I had the tools and experience to apply for a research post in Paediatric Respiratory Medicine at the Royal Post Graduate Medical School (RPGMS, Hammersmith Hospital).

I retired in 2014 after 25 years as a researcher / Clinical Scientist at the RPGMS and Royal London. A large part of my research involved mathematical analysis of breathing patterns and flow-volume curves. This involved developing techniques and algorithms for alternative methods of assessing "lung function". I published many papers in international medical journals and all included a significant maths / stats content. During this time, I took evening classes obtaining additional A' Levels in Biology, Chemistry and Statistics and then read for an M Sc in General Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at Kings College London. In 2005, my portfolio was reviewed by the Health Professions Council and I registered as Clinical Scientist, which is a protected title, The main reason for the additional qualifications was my passion for learning and the thrill of sitting examinations and testing myself. The addition A'Levels and M. Sc. were taken for the challenge and pleasure and were not directly relevant to my career. One important reason for offering private tuition is my love of teaching / learning and I miss my close involvement with the "sciences". I have been accepted as a Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) ambassador and I have an enhanced DBS check certificate.

Teaching Experience:

Although, I do not have formal teaching qualification and I only started offering private tuition at the beginning of 2015, I am a patient person who has tutored a range of tutees from Common Entrance Exam level to adult learner including CGSE students for both Mathematics and Statistics.

However, my "teaching" roles / experiences go back to the mid 60s helping friends struggling with the Civil Service maths entrance exams and later, post graduation, I taught maths, unpaid, to several children of friends as well as adult friends and colleagues who needed to obtain better qualification. My research positions included (i) formal teaching / lecturing roles at all levels e.g. work experience students, medical / nursing students, visiting medics, junior members of the lab staff as well as registrars and consultants; (ii) presenting the research at local, national and international meetings and (iii) giving guest lectures on B. Sc. and M Sc. courses.

In my research / technical support work, I found particular pleasure explaining to children and parents the purpose and science that underpinned the tests and the analysis and interpretation of the results. This was a unique experience for almost all of them. It gave them and me a lot of pleasure and improved the success problems. In my own time, I helped patients, some who missed a lot of school time due to their problems, with both school work in the sciences and others with projects related to the maths and biology of their respiratory problems. Invariably, they ended up knowing more than their teachers!

Tutoring Approach:

As George Orwell never said "All tutees are not the same but some are more different than others".

I have a variety of approaches, depending on factors such as (i) whether the tutee needs teaching or revision; (ii) the number of lessons the tutee can fit in before the exam; (iii) their strengths and weaknesses, as well as their interests; (iv) whether the tutee is struggling to keep up or a flyer needing to ensure an A* (v) the length of the sessions 45-90 mins and whether it is one or two session a week and (vi) the work they are able to do between sessions.

However, there are aspects that are common to all tutees: before starting the lessons, I am happy to meet for a chat (no charge) to spend as long as necessary clarifying important issue such as (i) which board, level and paper they will be sitting; (ii) the text book they use and which parts of the syllabus have been covered and whether any need revising or explaining and (iii) wherever possible, obtaining suggestions and feedback from their teachers including where marks had been lost in recent exams.

Other aspects of my approach include (i) the tutee attempting appropriate questions / papers from other boards to encourage and foster "thinking outside the box" and, thus, to be prepared for questions that do not fit the usual mode; (ii) e-mailing questions of papers in advance of session to allow adequate time for preparation; (iii) feeding back how sessions have gone and suggestions for changes and being available between session via e-mail; (iv) moving up and down the difficulty ladder depending on the progress; (v) working on exam technique and teaching how to not misinterpret questions, sometimes, badly written; (vi) preparing tutees for difficult topics about to be taught at school, to ensure they get the most out of upcoming lessons; (vii) using examples from everyday life to demonstrate the use and usefulness of maths and statistics outside of the classroom and (viii) building up confidence and aiming to engender a passion and love of the subject and learning, in general.

I make extensive use of marking schemes and examiners reports to discuss how the tutee may have obtained the correct answer but lost marks due to not showing their working or lost time providing irrelevant details and this has been very successful and interesting for the tutees.

Some of my feedback:
(i) As a Year 11 student, Peter has been providing me with extra mathematics tuition during the final months before my GCSE examinations, offering distinct, concise teaching within a relaxed but highly enjoyable and yet professional environment. As a mathematician, Peter has aided me in approaching mathematics from a somewhat more lateral perspective, exploring multiple methods that could be employed to solve a challenging question; a form of thinking that is seldom used within a typical school environment. Peter's abundant, infectious passion for both his tuition and mathematics manifests itself within his unswerving support and guidance during our sessions together, delivering a uniquely engaging teaching environment within which to learn, but most importantly, to enjoy learning mathematics!"

(ii) Parent of a Year 11 school girl: Hello Peter, thank you for your follow up, your emails always have an interesting flair about them. We also enjoyed our meeting and Ebony particularly liked your relaxed approach to the subject, for that reason alone I think she would benefit from being able to ask questions without feeling awkward about what she doesn't understand, most importantly I agree with your 'spades a spade' philosophy in how to interpret the syllabus into the real world.

(iii) Teacher's reply to an e-mail from the mother of a Common Entrance school boy: Thank you for your email. I am pleased Edward has a good tutor and is happy doing extra Maths. The best paper to prepare Edward for our end of year test would be a practice SATs test as they follow a similar format to ours.

(iv) A recent GCSE student, EDEXCEL Higher, via his mother: Peter, I obtained and A in my Stats paper and B in my maths paper and I was told by my teacher that it might be worth remarking, as I was only several marks away from the A Grade)

Consulting the 'breakdown' of my overall Mathematics grade, it appears as though I (thanks to your support) did exceptionally well within the non-calculator paper (the equivalent of a very high A/ very low A* in terms of marks), but it was simply a few questions at the end of the calculator paper (that seemed to baffle everyone, regardless of ability) that partially pushed my overall grade down.

Once again, thank you for all of your support and guidance; I certainly would not have been able to achieve my result within the NON-calculator paper, the paper that I claimed was more intimidating, without our sessions within the Library. You have improved not only my proficiency, but also my confidence in Maths enormously and for that I cannot thank you enough.

(v) Father of a schoolgirl (EDEXCEL Higher): "E" did very well overall and passed all 13 ! In Maths she was one point off a B so of course that's a C. I think we will request a remark for the maths paper. Many thanks again for your help in the past, best wishes.

Personal Description:
I am a professional, patient, and fun loving person. I have a BSc., MSc., and am just completing a PhD in Psychology. I enjoy reading and writing academic and popular literature and I have a broad knowledge of assessment criteria used by schools and universities.

Teaching Experience:

I have been teaching for 3 years now at the undergraduate, postgraduate, and adult learner level. I have taught traditional lectures, seminars, workshops, and practical sessions. I also have experience designing and marking assessments at different levels.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe tutoring should be an enjoyable but challenging experience. I utilise a mix of paper-based tasks, presentations, and reading. I believe in constantly measuring performance for individuals so they know how they are improving and I also employ an "errorless learning" approach; I don't believe highlighting peoples failures is an effective method of teaching, rather I treat a wrong answer as a learning experience and encourage people to fail often so that they can grow rapidly.

I derive my learning materials from the official syllabus and supplement my own material when I feel a broader knowledge is necessary. I also focus on written and oral communication so that factual knowledge can be effectively translated to exam success.
