Personal Description:
After graduating from Trinity College Oxford with a first class Masters in Engineering I reflected upon the opportunities education had afforded me, the horizons it broadened and the skills it had developed. It was such a valuable gift I decided to teach. I have also had a broad range of other career experience from healthcare to investment banking, this helps me to offer practical advice and guidance to A Level students considering their career.

Teaching Experience:

I've now taught in a variety of schools from an inner-city London school to more recently completing a period as Head of Physics in the Middle East. I now work as a Physics teacher at a top independent school is West London. I have tutored for over seven years, gaining increasing satisfaction from watching young peoples' mind develop and confidence grow.

I am an exam board examiner and moderator, which is a great insight into how to prepare pupils for examinations as well as address their wider educational needs. Education is a crucial part of any persons' life and as such I approach tutoring with both rigour and passion!

In addition to helping student achieve their best grades at GCSE, IGCSE and A Level, I have also been successful in tutoring students for common entrance. I have helped students secure places at Winchester, Westminster and Eton.

Tutoring Approach:

Building self confidence and fostering a love for the subject is my overall aim. To do this I endeavour to establish a close working relationship with each tutee based on trust and their confidence in me to facilitate their exam success as well as address their wider educational needs. Thought process, rather than content, lies at the heart of my ambition to develop self sufficient learners yet I appreciate than content and technique cannot be understated when preparing for exams.

Personal Description:
As a post-graduate and former scientist, I have been tutoring chemistry for over 9 years now. I am an easy going, down to earth person with a natural flare for teaching. I really enjoy helping people to understand difficult concepts and I've always found science captivating. I am the kind of person who is willing to go above and beyond to help if I am able to. I have experience with young people of all ages, from crèche to holiday clubs, teaching in schools and leading teenagers at summer camps.

Teaching Experience:

I have enjoyed studying science at university level for over 8 years, during which time I was also involved in teaching undergraduate students in labs and tutorials. Since then I've held a post in a pharmaceutical lab developing cancer therapies, as well as teaching chemistry, physics and biology in secondary schools. I studied for a PGDE to become a secondary school chemistry teacher in 2010 (but had to end the course early due to severe morning sickness). As such, I have been able to practice and develop a variety of teaching methods and I'm up to date with the relevant exam board course outcomes and requirements. Over the past 9 years, I have professionally tutored many students, covering Standard Grade, Intermediate 2, National 5, Higher, Revised Higher and Advanced Higher Chemistry, Revised Advanced Higher Chemistry, Higher Human Biology and first year University level Biochemistry. About 70% of my students have achieved at least 2 or 3 grade jumps since they started tutorials with me.

I have several positive references and a CRB enhanced disclosure, which will be available to view on request.

Tutoring Approach:

I have a friendly approach to tutoring. I like my students to feel at ease so that they are able to ask me anything. I'm of the mind set that no question is too silly to ask. My tutorials are structured and tailored around the individual student. Depending on the time we have available before an exam/NAB, we will identify key areas that the student experiences difficulty with and work through them addressing Knowledge & Understanding and Problem Solving, both of which are key to achieving the individual's desired grade. I endeavour to cover all topics of the course if we are able to, as I often find that there are areas that a student realises they are not up to scratch on once we start to revise it. I create personalised worksheets for my students and we spend a lot of time going through past papers, as well as developing exam/study technique.

As tutition progresses, I have witnessed a huge increase in the confidence that every one of my students hold in their own ability to problem solve as well as understand their given course work. I have often had comments from students and parents that I make things easy to understand and that the student is actually enjoying their course a lot more since commencing tutoring. I try to make myself available as much as possible to answer queries from tutees by e-mail or text, especially in the run up to class tests or exams.

Here's what one of my previous tutees had to say: "Dale tutored me throughout my higher Chemistry course and I honestly could not have got an A without her! She managed to explain the complex concepts essential to understanding chemistry in a way that I could relate to real life. She was always supportive and motivated me to do well. She was always flexible and able to fit in between my busy schedule. Even now when I have issues with my course work at Medical school I know I could drop her an e-mail with questions and she would be more than happy to help out. Overall Dale is fantastic, if you want a good grade whilst having fun she is your best bet!" - Eilidh.

All of my preparation time (typically 2 hours per session), travel time and travel expenses are included in the hourly rate. I prefer not to travel more than 7 miles from home but will still be happy to consider this.

Personal Description:
I hold a BA hons in History and Masters degree (distinction) in History and Politics from the University of Exeter. I was graded outstanding for my PGCE in Secondary History. I continued this onto Masters Level, completing my MEd ln 2011.

Teaching Experience:

I have taught in a selective boys grammar school in Devon, where I worked in a thriving History and Politics department (ranked among the top 10 of History and Politics departments nationally according to GCSE and A Level exam results). I then moved to the North West to teach History and Politics to A Level at a prestigious independent school. I have recently returned to Devon to teach at a similarly excellent and high performing independent school where I teach English. I have taught a range of exam modules, from Henry VIII; Crime and Punishment; the Modern World; 20th Century America: Vietnam War; 20th Century Germany; The Cold War. I am an experienced marker for various examination boards for several exam boards including Edexcel, AQA and Cambridge IGCSE. I am well versed in exam technique. I am able to offer an insight into what examiners are looking for in GCSE, AS and A2 exam responses.

Tutoring Approach:

I work to instill a genuine enthusiasm for History, Politics, and English as well as developing a sound understanding of the topics covered during tutoring. I use and prepare engaging resources as well as a diverse range of teaching methods, which enable students to learn both the content and the skills needed to succeed in their examinations. It is my belief that tutoring sessions should not just involve the regurgitation of facts on the part of the student; rather, it should empower students with the confidence and knowledge they need to secure the grades they're capable of.

I tailor my sessions to best fit the needs of the students; whether that is through honing exam technique, or gaining an in depth understanding of the course content. I am able to target my sessions to suit all levels of ability.

Personal Description:
Hello! I'm a 30-year-old professional freelance saxophonist and music educator from Sydney, Australia. I am living and working in the UK with my wife, a physiotherapist. I am jazz trained but have a love of all music and a wealth of experience tutoring individuals, groups and directing ensembles in many different genres. I am also a freelance session musician and have done a lot of TV, touring and recording work, including with Guy Sebastian (AUS), Friendly Fires (UK) and Aloe Blacc (USA).

Teaching Experience:

I have been teaching saxophone for 15 years (half my life!) and have experience teaching ages 9-60, from complete beginners to university music students, and from people looking for a fun hobby to students intent on becoming professional players.

Tutoring Approach:

I am committed to giving beginning pupils the best possible start on the instrument, with care taken to ensure good fundamentals of posture, breathing, sound production and technique. This prevents students from reaching a plateau in their learning that may discourage them and hinder their progress on the instrument. Aware that everyone learns differently, I am able to adapt the style, content and pace of my tuition. I am completely besotted with music and the saxophone, and it would seem that this rubs off on my students!

Personal Description:
My name is Carolina, my mother language is Spanish and I am 34 years old. I am a qualified Spanish tutor and I cover both Castilian Spanish and Latin American Spanish. I love languages and being able to teach Spanish is an enriching experience for me and I want to carry on learning other languages myself as it is a totally open door to the world and it is what I like to transmit to each of my students.

Teaching Experience:

I have a wide experience teaching and assisting English teachers and other subjects in my hometown so I know how to give a personal value to each of my students as everyone is different and unique and I am completely conscious of the different teaching methods suitable for individual needs. Teaching and learning a language should be enjoyable and fun, with plenty of opportunities to make and correct mistakes without embarrassment and always with a wide-open window for the communication, which is the base of any language.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe learning a new language is a challenge for anyone and for some people could be easy to comprehend certain things and not so easy other type of things, but when learning the language in a context, where the student is able to see the full picture of the form of the language and be able to explore why its the way it is, is what I strongly believe is the best method of learning. A word on its own does not mean anything in any language, but when you put it on a context, then it takes shape, a nice shaped like a puzzle.

Personal Description:
As a child, I learned by being told, by beatings, shaming and a strict examination system. As you can imagine I didn't learn much that I could later apply to my academic life. As a result, I became an inveterate learner, always interested in learning the next thing. At one point, the drive to learn was because I didn't see myself as being good enough. Later on, that drive became an interest in discovering my own abilities as well as about helping others. I have now learned so much about how not to teach that I have gained good insight into how learning happens. I am keen to ensure all my learners learn how to learn and understand how to apply what they discover.

Teaching Experience:

My background is in teaching, training and facilitation. I have over 25 years experience of teaching in different forms having worked within primary, secondary and further education settings. I am an NVQ / TAQA assessor and trained and assessed Parenting Practitioners and other candidates up to Level 5 in Health & Social Care. I have specialist skills in Personal Effectiveness subjects such as Report Writing, Speed Reading, Presentation Skills.

Tutoring Approach:

Being a private tutor used to be the preserve of only those with the highest qualifications and the greatest experience. Now all that's changed.

However good a tutor is, the learner needs to be astute in order know if the tutor is a good match for her / him. Importantly, making the right choice can be complex.
Here are three tips to help you decide if I am or someone else is right for you. The following tips describe how I teach and how I will enable you to be an independent learner.

1. Look for a tutor who can teach you how to learn
Here's a funny thing… learners study a subject, sometimes for months and years and can come away with no long-term memory of the underpinning principles of the subject. As disturbing, they have no ongoing understanding of the subject. They are unable to apply what they tried to learn. This is easily resolved by clearing up past issues with learning. In Applied Scholastics it is now well known that if as a learner, you are helped to do so, you can learn any subject. This is central to how I teach.

2. Look for tutors who understand the main barriers to learning and can help you overcome them
There are three main barriers to study. They relate to confusion over an idea, missing out critical steps and having unclear ideas about the subject under study. Gaining a day to day facility with overcoming those barriers is key to effective and efficient study. I use these methods to help my own reading and study. I will introduce them to you so that you can use them too.

3. Look for tutors who can help you find the information you need so that you keep expanding your own understanding of the subject

Sometimes, a learner during a course of study will find that s/he wants to give up. Have you ever experienced this? Whenever that happens it is because there is something - an idea, a symbol, a form of punctuation, the use of a word, or something else - that you did not understand. Without the proper factual information on this and without the correct knowledge of why and how this happens, the learner will struggle. Without knowing what remedies to apply, the learner will give up.

When you study, you are investing time and energy. In this case, money too. If you want to discover more about how you learn, what your barriers to study are and how to understand more, you will benefit from being an independent learner. That will repay your investment.

Those three critical points should help you decide if I could be right for you. They briefly describe the way in which I would work with you and enable you to be an independent learner.

Personal Description:
I have over 15 years experience working in the science field as a researcher, teacher and exam marker. I am passionate about my subject and enjoy passing on this enthusiasm and drive to the students I teach. I have spent 11 years in academia and published my work (two papers submitted 2016). I have ongoing links with local universities and can offer advice and help to prepare students for university. I can offer support and guidance with students UCAS applications, covering letters, interview skills and CV writing.

Teaching Experience:

I am qualified to teach biology and chemistry from GCSE to A level. I have 4 years experience in a secondary school where I have taught pupils in the age range 11-19. I have worked with mixed ability classes, highly able pupils and SEN pupils. This year I am very proud of my students who have all excelled in their exams achieving above and beyond their target grades. All my GCSE students improved their mock results by at least two grades. My AS students all achieved A -C grades with the new specification. My AQA A level students all achieved the required grades to enter their first choice university (gaining A-C grades in biology and chemistry). I have experience teaching the current OCR, edexcel and AQA specifications.

Tutoring Approach:

My priority focus when teaching science is to engage the students. To encourage an inquisitive mind so that the pupils will ask questions to develop their knowledge and understanding. It is also important to identify the role of science in our everyday tasks and activities - it touches on so many parts of our daily activities and links to many other subjects. It should be fun and interesting. The ability and drive to learn something new and build on that is key to progressing in a subject.

Personal Description:
I am British but have spent most of my life in Latin America. I resettled in the UK in 2015 and currently live in Birmingham. I hold a PhD in Ethnic and African Studies from a prestigious Brazilian university. In order to be accepted by the PhD programme, I had to demonstrate exceptional fluency in Portuguese, both written and oral. My BA in English from the University of California, Los Angeles (First/Hons) amply qualifies me to tutor in English literature.

Teaching Experience:

I am currently tutoring in Portuguese, English Language and Literature (GCSE, A-Level and Graduate) and English as a Second Language (ESOL) in Birmingham and nearby cities. I taught English as a Foreign Language (EFL) in Brazil for many years. I have also lectured in English and Translation at a Brazilian university.

Tutoring Approach:

I always attempt to establish a rapport with my students to keep them at ease, focussing on the positive before going on to point out areas where they could improve. I am aware that, especially when learning a foreign language, students can be extremely sensitive about making mistakes, so I use methods that are designed to be non-threatening and non-critical, but always constructive.
