Personal Description:
I am a former Head of English and Assistant Headteacher in a local secondary school and have a very strong record of raising pupils' attainment. I have worked with all year groups, 7-13 (age 11-18), and have experience working with pupils with special needs, as well as having done lots of work on stretching more able students. English is my passion and it's one I am enthusiastic to share with others. I graduated from Oxford University in 2005 and am currently Senior Examiner at GCSE for one of the major exam boards, so I know what they really want to see! I am also a 'subject expert' in English at Ofqual. I now oversee the training and work of up to 80 examiners so have very significant experience in this area.

Teaching Experience:

I qualified as a teacher in 2006, having taken my PGCE at Homerton College in Cambridge. Since then I have worked full time at a local school teaching English, although I have now returned to full time study so have better availability for tutoring. I have marked both GCSE English Language and English Literature for OCR and AQA and CIE, and also mark A Level. I am aware my price point is higher than others, but this reflects the years of teaching and direct examining experience which I will bring to your sessions; I believe I am very well placed to help students achieve their potential.

Tutoring Approach:

In consultation with student and parents/carers, we would put together a programme which would be tailored to meet the needs to of the student. I always try to create a relaxed atmosphere, and encourage humour!

Personal Description:
I am a friendly and passionate graduate from Oxford University with a love for languages. Having achieved a first class degree in French and Linguistics, I am keen to pass on my knowledge and love of language and literature to other students. I completed a research Masters in West African French literature, and am currently pursuing my studies in the second year of my doctorate whilst also developing my teaching experience. I hold a TEFL qualification and have taught a wide range of students in France, Brazil and the UK.

Teaching Experience:

TEFL teaching:
- Beginner and Intermediate classes at International House London as part of training. Highly commended.
- Part of a student-led initiative in Oxford to teach English to low wage workers. We organised evening classes for international adult students of multiple levels of proficiency.
- Teaching experience in Wizard and ERTE schools in Bahia, Brazil.
- Private tutoring for GCSE student as well as adults learning French.
- English tandem learning with advanced adult learner from China: conversational and written English.

British council:
- English teacher for 11-16 year olds in Laval, France in 2009-10. Planned and delivered English lessons focussed on speaking and listening, current affairs, and reading skills.

Warwick University:
- Teaching first and second year students in French language and literature as part of my PhD.

Primary school:
- Teaching assistant 2006-7 in Garden House School, London. Prepared and assisted lessons for year 1 pupils, as well as organising timetables and caring for students. Involved some special needs assistance.

Youth work:
- Worked as part of two youth work teams over 3 years to organise activities and teach teenagers aged 15-19.

Mentoring:
- Reading programmes with younger students struggling with English language.
- Advised and assisted GCSE and A-level students in preparation for exams and applying for higher education.

Tutoring Approach:

Depending on the individual needs of each student, I will prepare a range of tasks to build confidence in specific areas of weakness. From past experience, a lack of confidence is one of the biggest barriers to learning, so in all cases I seek to reassure a student of existing strengths and abilities before and during our tuition. More generally, we will develop speaking, listening, reading and writing skills through different activities to strengthen and accelerate ongoing language learning. Where appropriate/desired, I will bring in relevant texts and materials to develop broader reading building up analytical and critical skills. Grammar work will always feature, though in well-balanced chunks which aim to be accessible AND enjoyable!

Most importantly, I hope to inspire students of any level to relish and enjoy their studies, and to yearn for a more solid grasp of their subject and a higher proficiency in each area of language learning.

Personal Description:
I came to London in 2005 and I live in Walthamstow,London. I have always liked Art and Foreign Languages. I am passionate about Art and Crafts, and I have discovered my enthusiasm for French language when I started tutoring French a few years back. I work in a secondary school teaching Art and French and my colleagues and students would describe me as friendly, approachable with a good sense of humour.

Teaching Experience:

I have taught Art and Design for four years prior to working as a learning support for 6 years. I have been working as a learning support, with Lead role in Literacy and I have worked as a Cover Supervisor for two years .I believe that teaching is not only about passing on the knowledge of a subject, it is also about connecting with the students to try and make them work to the best of their abilities. I have also tutored French in a private tutoring centre to students who have never learnt French before and within 2 and a half years, I have put them through their GCSE exams and they have got amazing results from A* - B. I have also been tutoring French at home for a few years and again my students came out with great results. I am fully aware of the curriculum and have experience in Writing, Speaking , Listening and the criteria for Controlled Assessment. References can be available on request.
I also run Art and Crafts workshop online and at home. I can teach a range of crafts such as stamping, cardmaking, scrapbooking including various techniques. A sample of my crafts tutoring can be available on requests.
I am currently working as a full time Art and French teacher in a secondary school. With all the changes in the curriculum, it is fundamental that tutoring Art or French, are tailored to each individual to enable them to progress in each lesson so each pupil can reach their full potential.

Tutoring Approach:

I tailor my lesson plans according to each individual as I believe that every student's learning is different. It is important for me to be able to communicate with my students, to understand their needs and to plan an Individual Educational Plan (IEP)to accommodate the requirements of each pupil. Resources are provided to reinforce learner's knowledge and homework is set weekly. Tests are held regularly to assess student's progress. Furthermore, I believe that regular contact with parents help ensure that student's targets are met accordingly.
PS: I have a CRB as I work in a Mainstream Secondary School. Reference from my current school or previous school can be available on request.

Personal Description:
I graduated from the University of Leeds in 2009 and work as a manager tutoring maths part time. I work shifts so I'm generally available at any time throughout the week and weekend. I'm friendly, enthusiastic and make my students feel at ease so they feel comfortable to ask for help with questions which they may not have the confidence to ask during classes at school.

Teaching Experience:

Seven years tutor experience with pupils from year 8 up to adult learners. The majority of my students have been studying for their GCSE's.

There are many teachers on here which may be perfect for some children as a tutor. I am not a qualified teacher however all of my previous students have selected me for that sole reason - so their child has a tutor and not a teacher to help them with their maths. They have all felt instantly relaxed with me, more inclined to ask questions and extremely driven to prove themselves.

Reference available upon request

Tutoring Approach:

Every child is different so it's explaining a topic in a way that makes sense to them rather then the way the teacher wants them to learn. If the child feels relaxed with the tutor they are more likely to understand something rather then just feel under pressure to say they understand.

Personal Description:
I am an enthusiastic, creative and highly experienced teacher of English language and literature. I retired In 2014 from the full-time secondary school teaching post I held for 23 years, at an independent girls' school in Lincolnshire. I taught throughout the school, at Key Stages 3, 4 and 5, and have a strong proven commitment to raising academic standards; my students have achieved consistently excellent GCSE and A Level grades. Although I have a particular passion for teaching literature, I am a rigorous teacher dedicated to raising standards of literacy through my teaching of English language, and to the educational and personal development of young people more widely, especially those in transition to higher education.

As well as teaching my academic subject, I was a sixth form personal tutor for 18 years, monitoring my students' academic progress, and guiding and mentoring those applying to university, assisting with UCAS applications and personal statements, or helping tutees plan for a gap year or for employment - a role which I found particularly fulfilling. I also have experience of teaching in further education and have been successful in teaching mature students from different cultural backgrounds.

For two years 2012-14 , I supervised sixth form students taking the AQA Extended Project Qualification. I greatly enjoy one - to-one tuition.

In a career spanning more than 40 years in all, I have built up extensive subject knowledge and teaching expertise, which I can adapt to students ranging from 11 years to adult.

Teaching Experience:

In my most recent post, which I held for 23 years until my recent retirement, I taught English Language and English Literature throughout the school: to pupils aged 11-14 at Key Stage 3, to pupils taking GCSE exams, and to sixth formers taking AS and A level English.
At GCSE and AS/A Level my pupils have obtained consistently excellent results. I have taught a very wide range of set texts for literature and have taught courses by different exam boards, such as Edexcel, and OCR, and the CIE IGCSE.

My teaching has often involved one-to-one sessions with pupils who need extra support and I have taught those whose attainment in the subject is modest, as well as higher achievers in English.

My teaching experience prior to this included teaching for a total of 7 years full and part-time in further education colleges, and I have also taught English as a foreign language for the British Council.

I have been tutoring privately since retiring from full time school teaching, and I currently tutor students ranging from 15 to 21, assisting with preparation for GCSE exams, A Levels, and at university level. I have been tutoring students following a range of different GCSE courses and examining boards, including Edexcel IGCSE, Cambridge IGCSE, and AQA GCSE courses, both language and literature qualifications, and also the Edexcel combined A Level Language and Literature. My tutoring role includes assisting my tutees with revision of a wide range of set texts, demonstrating my adaptability and expertise in quickly grasping what different exam techniques are required. My private tutees gained English language and literature grades that exceeded their school teachers' expectations in the summer 2015 round of GCSE exams, achieving grades ranging from C (D predicted) to A* (B predicted). In summer 2016, again, my private tutees achieved good grades at least one grade higher than predicted at school and have been able to continue to the next stage of their studies, including university entrance.

Tutoring Approach:

My approach to tutoring is a natural continuation of my approach as a classroom teacher. I am passionate about my subject and prepare lessons thoroughly and imaginatively. I begin by making sure I am fully in the picture with regard to the specific course being followed and the exam criteria, and use the exam boards' websites to source relevant materials such as past papers and teaching resources.

I always have a clear lesson plan and realistic aim of what I wish to achieve in the time available. I like people and I am a friendly, outgoing person who will communicate successfully with a tutee; I enjoy the company of young people and am experienced in putting my tutees at their ease and building their confidence, which I believe is very important. I form productive relationships with those I teach and am good at listening to them and assessing their needs, and adjusting my teaching strategy accordingly.

As well as preparing thoroughly, I mark work meticulously and give very detailed and helpful feedback, both in writing and orally. I set relevant work to be completed for the next tutorial, and monitor progress closely; I stay in regular contact with my students and/or their parents via email and phone.

I am a hardworking and sympathetic tutor with the interests of my tutees at heart; my aim is to help them achieve their full potential and gain exam success.

i prefer to tutor in my own home where I am set up to receive my tutees in a quiet environment designed to maximise academic concentration. I do not tutor on Fridays or at weekends. I am usually able to tutor in school holidays, when I can offer longer, more intensive revision sessions.

Here are some recent 2016 testimonials from former tutees and their parents:

A Level

We turned to a private tutor because our daughter received a disappointing result in her first year of A Level English, but she knew she could do better and wanted to go to a first class University to study English. Her coursework had been excellent and most of her homework was good, too, but her exam technique was less secure. Isla definitely made a difference. She is a nurturing teacher who interacts with the student really well. Isla gave good advice about preparing for the exam paper and gave support in revision of the various texts, which boosted our daughter's confidence. Having achieved the necessary entry grades, our daughter is now at Newcastle University starting her degree course and wants to keep in touch with Isla."
Sally S, Peterborough, Cambridgeshire, parent of A Level student

"As someone who wanted to pursue English at university, my grade C at AS Level was not good enough, so during Year 13 we found a private tutor to help me with my A Level English Language and Literature course. Isla put lots of time into helping me come out with an overall high grade B. She gave me wonderful advice with my creative coursework and really enhanced my knowledge of the two plays I was studying for my written exam. I am so grateful and will continue to keep in touch with Isla as I enter my degree course at Newcastle University for English Literature and Creative Writing."
Emily S, Peterborough, Cambridgeshire, A Level tutee

GCSE
"Isla provided excellent support during Year 10 and 11 to our daughter in relation to her GCSE studies in both English Literature and Language. This complemented her learning at school and enabled focus on those areas where extra support or explanation was needed. Isla was very flexible in her approach, tailoring her lessons to our daughter's needs and providing additional support on the run up to the exams themselves. Although our daughter isn't continuing her English studies at A Level, Isla is going continue to provide support in relation to essay structure and comprehension in the subjects she has chosen to study. We would highly recommend her. "
Rachel M, Leicestershire, parent of GCSE pupil

My fees include preparation for the lesson, marking of set written homework, the actual contact time, and follow-up emails,

Personal Description:
I completed my PhD in History of Art at University College London (UCL) in 2013. I have published my research in a number of academic journals and edited book collections, and I am a practicing artist, permently based in Hulme, Manchester.

I am currently a Society Research Fellow at Cornell University Society for the Humanities (USA) for the academic year 2016-17, and will therefore only be available for Skype appointments until the end of July 2017.

Teaching Experience:

I am a fully trained secondary school teacher, specialising in Art & Design and Photography at KS3, KS4 & KS5. I have 9 years teaching experience, including working as a specialist Learning Support Teacher, and in Special Needs schools catering for children and young adults with a range of special educational needs, from moderate learning difficulties to profound and multiple disabilities.

I have particular expertise in studio practice (art and design), digital and darkroom photography (theory, history and practice), literacy, social and vocational skills, as well as History of Art, Anthropology and History of Medicine at undergraduate level.

I am also experienced in teaching at undergraduate level, having taught gallery-based first year History of Art courses, for University College London's History of Art Department, and on the History of Art degree programme at the University of Manchester.

Tutoring Approach:

I take a one-to-one, flexible approach to learning and teaching, which first establishes the needs and goals of the student, and then sets out clearly structured strategies for achieving these goals. These may be results-focused when preparing for exams, or aimed at developing a broader understanding of a subject area, depending upon the student's own priorities. I am happy to work with any course materials the student may provide, and I am familiar with all current GCSE and A Level syllabuses. I am able to guide both GCSE and A Level students through their studies, offering consistent, dedicated 1-2-1 tuition for the full term of the course. I can also provide practical tuition for students who are preparing their art portfolios for University submission, and can offer assistance with UCAS forms and references for students who undertake long-term A Level tuition with me.

Tutoring may take place at the student's home, or at my art studio in central Manchester, where I can provide a range of art materials and resources by prior arrangement, for more intensive practical art sessions. Please note that I can travel within 20 miles of central Manchester based on the fee structure quoted below, travelling further will incur a small additional fuel fee.

I have had recent successes with my private students, one of whom attended one-to-one sessions at my Manchester studio for 8 weeks and improved her predicted GCSE Art result of a B by two grades, achieving an A* in her final art exam. My most recent undergraduate student also attained a First overall in her History of Art degree, achieving a high score of 78 on her dissertation project, with intensive tutorial support conducted via Skype.

*Please note that due to the time-intensive nature of undergraduate level tutoring, I am only able to take on a maximum of three undergraduate tutees at any given time. Please see below for my current availability for tutoring at this level.*

I am currently tutoring ONE undergraduate student.

"I wanted a tutor to give me help and advice on my undergraduate history of art dissertation. I needed reassurance that what I was writing was okay and some one to proof read and give me their opinion on my arguments. Gemma was brilliant, she gave me the confidence that I needed to keep going with my dissertation by reassuring me that I was on the right track. She discussed my ideas with me in detail, proof read all of my work and suggested and sourced articles that I might want to have a look at. I have recently graduated from Newcastle University with a First in History of Art and Media and I know that I owe Gemma a huge thank you for the support she gave me on the way to achieving this."
