Personal Description:
I am a very positive individual that likes to carry out tasks efficiently. I feel that I am a motivator that can relate to a diverse range of people from my experiences from travelling and working in a variety of environments also I have worked with children from different backgrounds and educational levels and with my specific tailored programme of study I can help your child excel beyond your expectations.

Teaching Experience:

I have relevant experience with GCSE and A-level students from one to one tutoring to small group teaching of up to 4. I also have taught English previously when travelling in Asia.

Tutoring Approach:

From my years of experience of tutoring I find that confidence is vital towards success, which I instill in all my tutees.

My style of tutoring is very interactive with visual aids and diagrams with clear concise logical explanations of concepts and theories of the topics to be taught.

My strategy involves building a solid foundation in topics with a step-by-step approach where the basics are covered to ensure that at advanced stages, the tutee can excel.

If the tutee is unclear with a certain problem, breakdown of the problem into individual steps and working though each step with the tutee until the answer is derived to ensure clear understanding in approaching and conquering problems.

Personal Description:
My students find me enthusiastic, supportive, cordial and professional. I am responsive, a good listener, able to make complex ideas accessible and exciting, and can balance exploratory, individualised and structured approaches to learning. Ultimately, I believe that curiosity, engagement, and questioning are the keys to being both successful in exams and developing a life-long love of English.

Teaching Experience:

I am an experienced A level English specialist tutor who has taught in three 'Beacon Status' sixth-form colleges, all of which have been rated 'outstanding' by OFSTED. I have an excellent track-record of results in terms of both 'value-added' and 'raw' grades and am able to inspire and motivate students to attain their potential in English. I have managed an outstanding department of 10 teachers and 850 A level students for four years in a sixth form college in Surrey, introducing new creative and digital methods into daily practice and have also worked at Britain's top state-sector sixth form college in Cambridge.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe in drawing from a wide range of teaching methods to make a student's experience of English varied, fresh and challenging as well as identifying the particular needs of each individual to ensure that the right skills are prioritised and tackled rigorously.
Many students appreciate having a clear direction to learning and I believe in signposting different areas in a focused way - whether the skills involve close reading, constructing a debate, understanding or applying theory, researching contexts, or working on essay techniques and planning past papers.

I come from China and I am currently a Phd student, from Physics Department in the University of Cambridge. Before coming to Cambridge, I did my master degree about Sustainable Energy Systems in the University of Edinburgh. My undergraduate study is about Telecommunications Engineering and I receive first class degree from the University of Liverpool.

Teaching Experience:

I am currently doing demonstration and supervision about physics for year 1 and year 2 students, who are studying in the University of Cambridge. During my undergraduate study, I used to teach and help high school students in the subjects of maths and physics for the preparation of entrance exams to university. I also have the experience of being a language partner with an American guy for in Chinese for two years.

Tutoring Approach:

I always like to be a friend with my students. My teaching style is encouraging my students to try to solve the problems dependently under my direction. A detailed study plan for each student according to his characteristics will be made. Besides the textbooks, I also prepare the teaching material which is suitable for the student at different stages. Before each tutorial, a small exam will be given to test the student's mastering of the knowledge. Detailed feedback about the student's performance will be reported to parents in time. Communication Skills - Working with very young children with no English language

Each Summer I taught English to children aged 7 - 12 from around the world. I lived on site (in a boarding school environment) and I was responsible for teaching, entertaining and caring for the children twenty four hours a day. Having worked for the company for several years I reached the level of Assistant Director and Head of TEFL for the residential course. I was responsible for a team of teaching staff and I ensured they were delivering suitable and stimulating English lessons throughout the course. I also taught a class of my own. As Assistant Director I was a senior part of the management team, ensuring all activity and teaching staff were working happily and correctly. In the absence of the Course Director it was my responsibility alone to ensure the smooth running of our course. I often had to deal with couriers and families and I know how to project a professional, caring, enthusiastic and genuine image. I developed my team work skills, learnt how to thrive under immense pressure and my communication skills were constantly used to their full potential.

Lesson Planning
Solo Lesson Delivery
Team Teaching

I taught children aged from 6 - 16 various theatrical disciplines and dramatic styles. I delivered a three hour workshop weekly. I ensured the children in my care were learning effectively and having a fun and enjoyable time.

March - April 2008 - Point Blank Theatre Company - Drama Facilitator

Lesson Planning
Team Teaching
Behaviour Management
PR

During a work placement with the Sheffield based theatre company Point Blank I worked with a partner to devise and deliver a cultural drama workshop. I worked as a mentor for two international students who had travelled to the UK to teach school children about their cultures. I taught the two international students how to deliver a successful drama workshop and I helped them shape their own ideas into an educational and enjoyable drama workshop for Primary School children. Alongside this project I also worked with an English partner to create a cultural workshop for deprived children in the city. I contacted The Sheffield Children's Centre and created a relationship with them enabling us to take our workshop to underprivileged children who had never had the chance to express themselves through drama.

June - September 2006 - The Funzone - Playworker

The Fun Zone provided after-school and summer holiday childcare play schemes for children, aged three to twelve. I would lead activities, play group games, prepare and cook the children's meals, clean the rooms, supervise children and be responsible for groups of children on various outings and trips throughout the summer. I learnt how to work with children and how to work effectively to carry out duties such as cooking and cleaning, while making sure the children in my care were both entertained and safe.

Tutoring Approach:

I am a friendly, fun and experienced tutor. I believe a healthy dose of humour and kindness is important when teaching and I am a very professional and hard working person.

Report: Jon has been tutoring my son this year for his physics A-level.
I can honestly say that he is the best tutor I have encountered.
He is dedicated to his work, has always arrived when expected and is thoroughly prepared both for the individual lesson but also with a scheme of work for the months ahead to ensure that the syllabus is covered.
His communication is excellent and he keeps in regular contact providing information each week on the lesson ahead but also feedback after each lesson.
My son found Jon interesting, knowledgeable and able to explain even the most difficult concepts he even requested an extra lesson prior to the exam as he found the sessions so helpful.
I can recommend him without hesitation.

Thank you jon for your kind words. Lewis has grown in confidence in the past year with your help and he as always said that he enjoys and understands your way of teaching. I would not hesitate to recommend you as a physics tutor to anyone I know. We also are going to miss you and William (Pet dog) off course even though you sometimes disturbed him from watching his favourite programs. Take care to you and your family and your little doggy. I will keep in touch and let you know how Lewis got on. Thanks again

Hi Jon
Thank you very much. It's always lovely when people say nice things about your children!
I have to say that both myself and Matthew have been incredibly impressed by you and your enthusiasm, preparation and encouragement. The fact that Matthew arranged the extra lesson this week is testament to this!
I know he can be a bit uncommunicative at times but he has told me how helpful the sessions have been.
I don't know if he told you but he has decided to have a gap year and personally I think he probably needs it to really work out what he wants to do. I think this has taken the pressure off him and I can honestly say he has been happier and worked harder since he made this decision.
If anything it has made him more focused about getting the best grades he can.
Thank you once again for all your efforts, we shall keep you informed!

Teaching Experience:

Currently tutoring A Level AQA Physics

Over 20 students tutored in the past 2 years

2 years working as a Private tutor for A level Physics students (1977-79)

1 year teaching Physics to A level students at a Ladies Grammar school in Manchester (1979)

2 years teaching A level Physics at the Trafford Park College of Further Education - Stretford, Manchester (1977-79)

4 years at Sheffield Hallam University (2000 - 2004) working with Graduates and Post Graduate Students in Entrepreneurship and Business Enterprise

Tutoring Approach:

Dr Jon P Harris BSc (2:1) Hons. Pure and Applied Physics; PhD: Low Temperature Physics; MBA: Finance and International Business

2017-2018 academic year: My program will provide the basis of all student with ability in "the Sciences and Mathematics" subjects (A's at GCSE level) to provide the opportunity to obtain the top grade in AS/A2 physics

The 'timetable' and order by which each part of the syllabus will be approached will follow the AQA examination board's timetable. For students joining after the commencement of the academic year, those parts of the syllabus already covered will be 'returned to' during the 'revision period' after Easter

My tutoring sessions are always: 2 hours. They can be taken either:

1. Once per week: full coverage of the syllabus (AS/A2: including Options) plus significant time, each week, devoted to answering questions based on past papers

2. Once per two weeks: full coverage of the syllabus (AS/A2: including Options) plus time, each week, devoted to answering questions based on past papers

In addition to having the 'physics abilities', students will need to understand how to approach examinations and examination questions. There are different variations, each year, but with detailed subject knowledge and significant practice on exam style and past paper questions there should be no type of exam question that should cause any concerns to any student

To ensure a top grade (A/A*) the student will need to commit to additional study, over and above these two hour sessions:

Subject notes will be provided each week, in advance of the lesson, covering the topic to be covered during the lesson - the student will be expected to have already gained an "overview" of the subject area prior to the lesson commencing and take additional notes during the lesson

Each week, following the lesson, each student should complete sufficient exam style and past paper questions to ensure that they have obtained a comprehensive understanding of the subject area and detailed knowledge of 'typical' exam questions

Additional background reading will also be provided that will reach beyond the syllabus giving a deeper understanding of the "concepts" and "background" of the area of physics being studied - this will ensure clarity on the "physics concepts" that are examined in the final year papers each year

Following each lesson (excluding revision and examination question and answering sessions) the diagrams and other material used during each lesson will be provided, so that the student can compare the information with the notes provided and taken during each lesson - building up a complete 'library' of detailed knowledge on each subject area in the syllabus

It is expected that the student will spend (at least) two hours each week, in addition, to the two hour lesson and all school/college work

NOTE: The work program detailed above should not be at the exclusion of the students 'other subjects' - however much time is allocated to physics each week should be replicated with the student's other subjects

Essential planning:

To be prepared for the end year (A2/AS) examinations it will be important to start preparing early

By Christmas time (2017) each student should have produced an 'outline' revision timetable, covering all subjects - without going into detail here, the plan should include all 'known activities' (school/college/personal holidays, mock exam dates, field trips etc.) and periods allocated to revision of each of your subjects, so that a balanced and comprehensive plan for all subjects will attained

Note - 'downtime' should also be included - students should have a practical and balanced approach to secure the best results possible. Peaking too early or 'brain overload' are recipes for underperformance in examinations

I will assist, as required, throughout the period up to when the end year exams commence - this revision timetable will change over the period until the exams start, with the final months becoming more detailed - it will assist in allocating your 'known' resources

Tutoring style:

My lessons are highly interactive

In addition to the printed notes, the student will be expected to add additional notes of their own during each session

My students are fully engaged in all of the lessons and are expected to interact within the lesson

Worked examples and opportunities for students to complete typical exam questions will be part of every lesson

The lessons are delivered from my widescreen laptop making use of theory, pictures/diagrams, interactive GIFs, short videos to help introduce topics and emphasis on specific core material

On approaching (mock and final year) examinations periods:

1. I provide one session on "examination technique" (following AQA best practice) and adopt a rigorous question answering method to ensure that:

(a) Maximise the marks obtained for all mathematical and comprehensive style questions and

(b) In the event that any of my students fall into a "grade boundary" this question answering methodology will ensure the examiner will recognise the 'knowledge of physics' of my students and should ensure an upward grade where required and

2. Take the students through past examination papers to ensure that each 'style' of AQA question solving is well practiced

Flexibility will always be part of the process - if there are specific areas or concepts the student wishes to spend more time on, this time will be allocated

Personal Description:
I enjoy teaching and have tutored at various universities across Europe. My day job is at the Department of Oncology, University of Oxford, where our team of clinicians, physicists, mathematicians, biologists and bio-chemists together develop strategies to fight cancer. I particularly enjoyed interacting with people at science festivals explaining them the potential benefits of medical imaging. I have presented scientific work at various international conferences and worked in over 5 clinical trials. In the past, I have also enjoyed working at the interface of business, science & technology while starting-up a boutique clinical research organisation.

Teaching Experience:

10/2011-04/2013: Co/supervised various student projects, Kings College London, UK

04/2008-04/2010: Senior Tutor and Invigilator, UCD, Ireland
School of medicine: Designed and delivered 'Applied Research and Statistics' for 4th year Radiology, School of mathematics: Differential and Multivariate Calculus, Statistics, Matrices & Vectors

09/2007-01/2008: Teaching Assistant, University of Strathclyde, UK
EEE department: Probability and stochastic process

Tutoring Approach:

The classes are individually tailored. The students tell me in advance which topic they want to learn. I prepare a few questions & solutions for the chosen topic to tutor during our joint session and encourage students to bring specific exercises to the table related to the chosen topic. At the end of the session, I try to point out the key points learned during our session.
Note: If you can form a group of 2-3 students (max), students share the cost of my hourly class. I offer 50% off on the first lesson.

Personal Description:
I studied at the University of Ulster at Coleraine and hold an honours degree in Molecular Bioscience.

I worked in the Science industry for 4 years but I have found a new passion in tutoring as I feel it draws more on my abilities and I can give more back to students by helping them to do their best and to enthuse them.

Teaching Experience:

I am currently working at Victoria College Belfast, grammar school for girls.

My initial experience in tutoring was through completing two Tutoring in Schools programmes - offering voluntary tuition to pupils most in need.

In addition I have over two years of experience as a private tutor with students obtaining fantastic results. I am experienced in tutoring Maths, Chemistry and Physics at GCSE and AS/A2 Level as well as transfer tests.

It is wonderful to see students become more and more confident and enthusiastic in areas that they previously struggled with.

(4/5) (GCSE Maths) "I think that you have helped me a lot in terms of understanding topics that I previously would not have known and helping explain them to me in a great amount of detail."

Reply from Ching Lun: Thanks Hang Ling, I'm pleased to see you gaining better understanding and confidence

From Veronika (5/5): (Secondary Physics) Highly recommended. He is very good at teaching.

From Alison (5/5): (GCSE Chemistry) Ching is an excellent tutor and really helped my daughter succeed in her GCSE.

Reply from Ching Lun: Thanks Alison, I'm very pleased that I helped out

From Beena (5/5): (GCSE Maths)

From Margaret (5/5): (Primary English) A real gentleman and such a calm helpful teacher. If only all teachers were as caring and nice!

Tutoring Approach:

I am very patient and considerate and I believe that effective tutoring involves listening well and being observant in order to give student-specific support to allow them to achieve the best results.

I ensure that my students can answer past paper questions well and with confidence. To achieve this, I help them to understand the topics at a fundamental level and understand the relevance that they have in general. Doing so makes topics easier to understand because it inspires interest in them.

For your money, you get a tutor who:
Provides effective lessons and promises to add value
Makes good use of a variety of resources such as a vast collection of past papers, workbooks, innovative iPad apps and worksheets / revision notes created specifically for each student for a very personal touch.
Puts the student first and promises to provide support in any way possible
Is always flexible, ready to adapt to each student's needs
Is highly approachable - I encourage students and parents to contact me any time for any reason

Learning that one of my students achieved a great result is a fantastic feeling every single time and it inspires me to continue working hard as a tutor.
