| Personal Description: I am a 40 year old ethusiastic and experienced English and Media Studies tutor, who has a good track record in motivating pupils and helping them to cahieve their potential. I have ten years experience in an FE college and 5 years experience as a personal tutor - teaching all ages from 11 - 65! I tailor sessions not only to the syllabus but to the interests and needs of the pupil. |
Teaching Experience: 10 years as a tutor in Liverpool Community College, teaching English (up to 'A' Level), Media Studies (up to GCSE), Study Skills, Creative Writing, Literature Studies and Confidence Builing. 5 years as a personal tutor - working with pupils from 11-18 years old on an intensive one-to-one basis. Some time spent teaching English in a fee-paying/private secondary school in Liverpool |
Tutoring Approach: I am knowledgeable, highly motivated, enthusiastic and relentlessly cheerful. I find that a positive 'can-do' attitude usually rubs off on the pupil. I aim to demystify and make accessible literature - especially for de-motivated and unsure/unconfident pupils. I particularly focus on pupils needs and strengths - which I use as a starting point in sessions. I have had very positive feedback from both parents/carers and pupils themselves - and helped pupils move up beyond expected grades. I also genuinely like secondary school age children and teenagers. (I have two children of my own). |

| Personal Description: I am a final year international relations student at the univesity of sussex, with an average of 70 for the first two years. During my time at sussex i have taken courses in development studies, history, politics, spanish and geography but also have a background from A-level in math, physics and economics. |
Teaching Experience: I have no official teaching experience, but have an informal knowledge of teaching as my mother and brother are physics and maths teachers respectively, as well as helping my cousins with GCSE and A level revision session. I feel as though i have picked up some skills beneficial to tutoring through discussions with my family as well as from teaching friends to snowboard whilst on holiday and when friends visited me in a French ski resort when i lived there. |
Tutoring Approach: My approach to tutoring is centered around a solid understanding of the syllabus and building confidence by starting with concepts central to the course and then building on this by focusing on the areas that the tutee feels as though they would most like to work on together. |

| Personal Description: After graduating with an engineering degree, I spent some time in industry, then took a teaching qualification (PGCE) to teach in further education. After some time my hobby took over and I moved from being a free-lance french horn player to joining the BBC Welsh Symphony Orchestra in Cardiff, where I remained for 12 years. Most recently I have been working as a compliance officer for a mortgage brokerage. |
Teaching Experience: I have experience teaching mechanical engineering in further education, and mathematics and physics at secondary level up to A level. I have also taught the french horn and other brass instruments, principally trumpet and trombone, both on individual and class bases. |
Tutoring Approach: In my experience, the need for tutoring is usually caused by a lack of confidence in the pupil, which stems from difficulties in problem solving because of fundamental misunderstanding(s) at some stage in learning. I have found that a sympathetic approach to investigating and correcting the weaknesses and the provision of plenty of practice in past papers is the best approach to resolving pupils' problems and restoring confidence |

| Personal Description: I am a 22 year old male currently in my fourth year at Warwick University taking a maths and physics undergraduate masters. |
Teaching Experience: During my time at Warwick I have taken part in various teaching schemes such as Teach First for which I worked with students aged 13 to 18 teaching maths, physics and chemistry. I have some experience in one-to-one tuition through the Gateway to Teaching Scheme, which involved working with various school science departments in my home town, observing and educating classes. I have also organised personal A Level tuition in physics and chemistry during my university vacation periods. |
Tutoring Approach: Having studied and observed physics and maths from GCSE to University, I am familiar with the common difficulties found by students of varying abilities. During my teaching I am mindful of these pitfalls and am able to advise students on how best to tackle them and avoid them in future. My passion for maths and physics allows me to teach with enthusiasm for the subject, which I believe motivates students to tackle new challenges with confidence. |

| Personal Description: After 25 years of software engineering for high technology companies in the UK and the US, I've returned to Penarth where I grew up and went to school. One of the aspects I enjoyed while in industry, was the developing and mentoring of junior engineers. So I've decided to get into teaching to be able to pass on the knowledge and experience I've picked up, and to share some of the enthusiasm for the subjects I really enjoyed at school. I suppose having 3 children of my own has also made me more aware of the importance and joy of teaching. |
Teaching Experience: The majority of my teaching experience has been in industry - devising courses and manuals to train users in the use of software and networking equipment. |
Tutoring Approach: - Establish what stage the student is at in terms of the curriculum and exams. - Plan a course of study to meet the students objectives. - Use alternative approaches and/or real world examples to help with problem areas and reinforce school learning. - Make it enjoyable and successful. |

| Personal Description: I'm 23, white British male, currently studying for a Masters in Ancient History at UCL, having completed my undergraduate degree in the same subject. I grew up in Cambridge, where I also went to school, and now live in central London. My two main hobbies are music and rowing: I play piano and organ to diploma level, and have coxed, coached and rowed for 6 years. During my degree I was heavily involved in Drama and Musical Theatre Societies and I directed the Bloomsbury Musical of the Year. I'm happy to teach French, Ancient History, music and music theory, and if needed, University admissions. |
Teaching Experience: As well as Latin and Greek, I also learnt Egyptian heiroglyphs and Babylonian cuneiform which can give a tutee a valuable insight into the primary literature in Ancient History, and gives me a very strong grasp of grammar. UCL is in the top 6 Universities in the World, so I have had expert tuition throughout the my own education. I studied French during my degree, and can teach up to at least GCSE. My best experience has been learnt from coaching rowing for 4 years in Australia and England at 3 different schools to all levels and ages of school children, specialising in technique. This has given me considerable experience in both individual and group teaching of a technical and complex subject. I am diploma level piano and organ, have some experience teaching both, and am happy to teach them again along with music theory if needed. |
Tutoring Approach: I am most comfortable with individual tutoring to give a personalised and informal approach to learning. For shorter problems I prefer to encourage them towards the right answer through leading questions and, if necessary, some level of explanation. For essays and longer questions, I ensure the tutee knows the fundamental basics, before laying out some key points and building up a final answer. At no point would I wish to spoon-feed answers to a tutee - I would rather they fully understood the problem, even if that meant a degree of discussion and some explanation of other areas. I would expect some level of preparation, usually reading or a small amount of memorising before each class. |
