Personal Description:
I did my undergraduate degree at St Andrews University and postgrad at Durham University; I've just returned from a year on research in the US. I love teaching and work for the Open University, which involves finding innovative ways to teach a large range of topics to students from 18 to 70 years old, which always makes for an interesting experience. I'm living in Newcastle and love the North East in general.

Teaching Experience:

Teaching at degree level since 2002, I have over 250 hours of face-to-face teaching experience.

I also have a Durham Teaching and Learning Award, a peer- and student- nominated annual prize given to 3-5 teachers in the university to recognise outstanding achievement.

I've taught in both the Philosophy and Theology & Religion departments of Durham University, as well as teaching Introductions to Arts & Humanities for the Open University. I frequently teach study skills and help address specific students' concerns about how to improve.

My experience also includes work in the Access/Widening Participation arena, and I have taught a variety of topics for the 14-18 age range, including work on the Sutton Trust Summer School programme.

Tutoring Approach:

My approach is best summed up as "everyone is different". Finding out what someone enjoys, what they're good at, and how they think, is the first step in helping them get the most they can out of any topic or situation. The ways that people learn, and the things that fire their imaginations, are diverse - but the expectations of coursework and exams don't always recognise that. I see my job as not simply preparing people to pass a test or master a skill, but as helping them to discover what works best for them as a student, and giving them the confidence to approach new challenges successfully.

Personal Description:
I am a certified teacher of Italian, with a strong passion and enthusiasm for my work. I believe that languages are a powerful tool to access new information, meet different kinds of people and broaden our minds. I have always been passionate about foreign languages and now I'm committed to spreading the love for my first language to people from all over the world.

Teaching Experience:

I have over four years teaching experience. I began teaching Italian to primary and secondary school children. I helped them gain the necessary language skills to study school subjects in Italian and be at the same level as their peers.
In 2014, I started teaching Italian online to adults. I use Skype, Power Point presentations and a shared board to create an interactive learning environment for my students. Thanks to my lessons, one of my students was able to move to Italy and start a new job.
Additionally, I've collaborated with local language schools and taught English and Italian in the classroom to business people. After attending my courses, my students were able to pass their final exams and use their acquired foreign language in the workplace.

Tutoring Approach:

I go beyond the traditional grammar rules explanations and I tend focus on communication. I believe in the importance of interacting and in reaching fluency. No matter how many mistakes you make. Mistakes are just a part of the learning process: if you don't make them, it means you're not trying, and if you're not trying, you're not even learning.
My students' needs are at the core of my lessons. Every class will be tailored according to your abilities and skills and, of course, if you have any special request...feel free to ask. My purpose is to be here for you.

Personal Description:
I have been playing guitar from the age of 14, firstly teaching myself and then learning from teachers such as Gypie Mayo (Dr Feelgood). I formed my first band at 15 and have been teaching, playing and song-writing in bands ever since, playing in venues such as Ronnie Scott's, Dingwalls, The Marquee, Chinnery's, 100 club, playing alongside artists such as Finley Quaye, Boy George and the Brand New Heavies. My band Sentivo was on Long Lost Brother Records (Jamiroquai, SIA) making recordings for producers such as Mickey Most, Joey Negro and Mark Knight. I studied Music/Guitar Theory at a college in London where I gained my Music Diploma. I am now currently teaching guitar part time at a college in Southend and teaching private and one to one guitar lessons whilst playing, singing and writing music & lyrics for my new band

Teaching Experience:

I am an experienced and qualified Guitar tutor having achieved a Diploma in Music/Music Technology and have also completed a level 4 PTLLS teaching qualification. I am currently working at a college as a Guitar Tutor which I thoroughly enjoy and has given me great teaching experience and teacher training especially in teaching in groups and also one to one. In the last 17 years I have been tutoring and teaching privately which has given me great confidence and experience in teaching on a one to one basis. I also hold a current DBS certificate. I teach a number of different styles ranging from blues, rock'n'roll to rock, funk, jazz and soul Please give me a call or email to book a lesson whether you are an absolute beginner or want to improve or build on the level you already are.

Tutoring Approach:

I like to keep teaching relaxed and fun and like to get the student up and playing straight away, especially if you're a beginner as it's important to come away with something gained to boost the confidence and enthusiasm so you feel like you have achieved something solid and want to carry on playing. If you're already playing then I like to build on your skills and strengths and also focus on any weak areas to make you the best player you can possibly be. It is your lesson so you choose what you want to learn whether it is chords/progressions, melodies, scales/modes or songs or maybe tools to improve your own compositions and song writing. I can teach from my home and have a dedicated music room which is specially set up in a relaxed and musical environment to inspire the creative musician.

Personal Description:
Hello! If you're looking for intensive revision before an important exam, or long-term assistance throughout the academic year, then look no further. I graduated with first class honours in 2014 having studied Business Economics for 3 years at Nottingham Trent University. Since leaving University I have pursued a career in financial services, which has given me the perfect opportunity to apply many of the skills I developed throughout education to real-world situations. I have had a keen interest in maths and statistics since a young age, demonstrating my ability by achieving an A at GCSE in Maths and an A in Statistics. This was a contributing factor towards my study of economics given how the two subjects interlink, achieving a B at Economics at A level. All of these skills were brought together at University, with my degree heavily reliant on the use of statistics as well as algebra and other important maths concepts. I am keen to help you/your child achieve their maths goals, and I hope that I can use my use of maths in my every day work to show how important maths and economics skills are both academically and for the real world.

Teaching Experience:

Throughout my time at school, sixth form and university I was always keen to teach peers both as part of large groups in class and on an individual basis, something I enjoyed because it helped me to develop my own skills and also because of the reward of seeing someone else do well as a result of my help. This has included me teaching a fellow GCSE student at the time of my own studying, as well as more recently helping a colleague with her entrance exams for her PGCE teaching exams. I also completed a week of work experience at my local primary school, which was an opportunity for me to develop my coaching skills in the best environment.

Tutoring Approach:

Having personally varied my own learning techniques throughout education dependent on the subject and the learning environment, I understand that every individual learns in a different way; I will use the early stages of tutoring to gauge the needs and learning styles of the tutee, and alter my teaching to these needs. Whilst I am keen believer that each individual has their own learning style, I also believe it is important that everyone tries new styles to work out which is most effective for them. Personally I like the use of extensive notes when first learning to understand a concept or theory, and then more concise notes that can I can use to prompt myself later on. Finally, I think that encouraging someone to regularly sit previous exam papers can develop the skills in a more applied environment whilst also helping a student to be more relaxed when it comes to the real exam situation.

Personal Description:
I am a biological researcher at UCL with experience of teaching at various levels from early secondary to university standards. My career choice intersects my interest in the sciences and teaching as I am regularly required to mentor new employees. I have a calm demeanor and friendly attitude with a range of interests both academic and creative allowing me to approach and solve problems from various angles.

Teaching Experience:

I have tutored at various levels from secondary school entrance exams up to and including university level mathematics and chemistry. These have been in the majority on a one-to-one basis and occasionally in small groups of two and three.

Tutoring Approach:

My usual approach starts with discussing the general areas with which the student requires help and proceeding to identify key problems that require focus to increase core understanding. Teaching would proceed with breaking down the problem and explaining the process step by step. Explanation can be particularly adapted to suit the style of learning that best aids the student.
Following comprehension, the core knowledge would be reinforced through example problems both set by myself and from exams to increase the student's confidence. Formatting of answers would be additionally discussed and practiced to maximize exam effectiveness.
Short, topical homework may occasionally be set to further reinforce learning and enable the student to self-identify further areas of weakness that can be discussed and remedied thus guiding in-depth tailored teaching.
Sessions can be adapted to focus on core knowledge or exam technique as per the student's requirements.
I am passionate about sciences and believe that anyone willing to learn will make progress once they have found their core confidence and learning styles, success breeds success.
