Austin made his debut as Vorsinger in Zaide in the Edinburgh International Festival conducted by Sir Charles Mackerras. Other EIF roles include Zweite Lehrbube in Die Meistersinger with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra and 1st Tenor Soloist in Curlew River directed by Olivier Py. Austin's Scottish Opera debut was covering Ottavio in Don Giovanni directed by Sir Thomas Allen and conducted by Speranza Scapucci.

Since his English National Opera debut he has worked for the company every season covering roles in new operas, performing roles in preproduction shows and for ENO's education and community departments.

Austin is a guest principal tenor for Impromptu Opera, Opera Anywhere, Black Cat Opera, and Opera Seria as well as appearing with his own company Rocket Opera where he is also artistic director.

In 2006 Austin Gunn accepted the post of director of Vocal Studies for OperaLabUK and gives workshops for OperaLab on Handel and British Vocal Music in France, Belgium and throughout the UK. He is an approved teacher of singing at Durham University and a visiting teacher of singing at Hull University.

Personal Description:
The opportunity to teach both my Technical craft and Autocad has arisen more by accident than design for most of my Professional career. I am led to believe that I have a natural ability in engaging interest, particularly in younger people through a combination of both my communication skills and technical ability. This produces immediate rewards in contrast to the often lengthy process of Project work which can easily dilute job satisfaction.
I believe a fundamental part of Teaching is the ability to speak the language of the pupil - more esoteric now than ever before. Understanding and respecting their language and culture enhances the learning process and contributes to mutual satisfaction and success.

Teaching Experience:

In the 1970's and 80's my employers ; Bain, Swan Architects had a healthy Apprenticeship policy. Throughout this period, they recruited locally in conjunction with colleges in Galashiels and Ashington. I was asked if I would consider mentoring the Office's Apprentice Technicians due to my apparent communication skills and technical ability. I enjoyed this auxiliary role, particularly, as it frequently engaged me in improving my own technical education to answer their endless questions. The tuition procedure had the additional benefit of enhancing the Practice's hand-drawn presentation work through educating the apprentices in the provision of accurate, informative and harmonious drawings. This was a flair which I had developed over the years in pre-computer times and employ to this day whenever possible, despite the icy perfections of Autocad.

Working in London in the late 1990's I was invited to teach many aspects of my craft in to JJA Academy pupils in night classes.These were generally foreign students to whom I provided additional Autocad tuition, hand drafting techniques and Installation construction. I discovered that the judicious use of sketches and diagrams easily demolished any language barriers. Encouraged by the senior lecturers my confidence developed in this supplementary role.
With Wintersgill Faulkner in 1999 I was invited to create and teach a dedicated layering system in Autocad to improve the Practice's presentation output. The younger members of staff had a fairly haphazard approach to defining different materials which made their work difficult to read both on-screen and on the plotted drawings - even if it was generally correct.The principle I employed was based upon the old British Standard conventions for : colouring drawings, hatching and line density. It is rewarding to know that the same CTB file is still their standard office practice 10 years later.
By word of mouth I have taught basic 2D Autocad to several private pupils during the last 10 year period, one of whom currently has a Technical practice in Bury St. Edmunds

Personal Description:
As a school student, I was a confirmed hater of Science! I am still haunted by the drafty labs and memories of sitting in silence on wobbly stools taking notes from ancient text books and carrying out odd practicals with the ubiquitous Potato tuber. It wasn't until I started studying Science as an adult learner in an FE college, where I was taught by inspiring and enthusiastic lecturers, who illustrated important concepts with analogies, diagrams and genuinely interesting practicals, that I began to realise that science was relevant to me and was "my thing".

This experience has stayed with me and has given me a passion for making science exciting and largely the reason that I chose a career in personal tutoring.

I am a professional full-time private tutor. I have recently graduated with an MSc in Science (Medicinal Chemistry and science education studies). I have also graduated with a First class honours degree in Life Sciences (Open) and I have completed a Post-graduate Certificate in Professional Studies in Education, specialising in Science Education.

Teaching Experience:

I specialised in A level and GCSE tuition and I have extensive experience working with a wide range of students, from those who are struggling and need help understanding the key concepts to those who do well in science but need support to develop the exam technique that will get them the top grades.

This gave me extensive experience of one-to-one tuition and creating individual training strategies.

Tutoring Approach:

When I begin tutoring a new student, I spend some time getting to know the individual and we begin by discussing their current feelings about Science and what they would like to get out of the tutorial sessions. I also carry out an assessment of the individual's learning style (sounds scary, but it's not, it's just a short quiz). By discovering how the individual learns best, I can structure the tutorials so that they are composed of activities that will be both effective and enjoyable. In all cases, I endeavor to make Science enjoyable and relevant to the individual student as possible and tailor the explanations to their particular interests.

As well as providing subject-specific tuition, I place particular emphasis on the development of study and exam skills. Where relevant, this includes teaching essay writing skills, how to revise, how to approach exams and specific scientific skills, such as data analysis and evaluation, which are often assessed in course work. I also offer tutorial sessions which focus just on study skills, for those who are comfortable with their subject knowledge but need extra support in these areas.

As well as traditional face to face sessions, I also offer fully online lessons using skype and an interactive whiteboard which allows me to interact with students in the same way as in a face-to-face lesson. I love teaching and work for the Open University, which involves finding innovative ways to teach a large range of topics to students from 18 to 70 years old, which always makes for an interesting experience. I'm living in Newcastle and love the North East in general.

Teaching Experience:

Teaching at degree level since 2002, I have over 250 hours of face-to-face teaching experience.

I also have a Durham Teaching and Learning Award, a peer- and student- nominated annual prize given to 3-5 teachers in the university to recognise outstanding achievement.

I've taught in both the Philosophy and Theology & Religion departments of Durham University, as well as teaching Introductions to Arts & Humanities for the Open University. I frequently teach study skills and help address specific students' concerns about how to improve.

My experience also includes work in the Access/Widening Participation arena, and I have taught a variety of topics for the 14-18 age range, including work on the Sutton Trust Summer School programme.

Tutoring Approach:

My approach is best summed up as "everyone is different". Finding out what someone enjoys, what they're good at, and how they think, is the first step in helping them get the most they can out of any topic or situation. The ways that people learn, and the things that fire their imaginations, are diverse - but the expectations of coursework and exams don't always recognise that. I see my job as not simply preparing people to pass a test or master a skill, but as helping them to discover what works best for them as a student, and giving them the confidence to approach new challenges successfully.

I came into teaching as a mature student after spending 15 years in the catering and wholesale business. My first training came with the Sussex Wildlife trust where I helped run the outdoor field sessions for pupils from year 1 to A level studies. I then trained on the GTP course at schools in Brighton and then Burgess Hill before working at Ringmer Community College as Head of Geography. I graduated from the University of Hertfordshire in 2010 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer and Network Technology. I then began working for an IT company as a computer technician, based within a local university, which gave me exposure to all sorts of IT problems! I then went on to run a chain of computer repair, maintenance and upgrade shops and have been doing this ever since.

I use ALL versions of Microsoft Windows from XP to Windows 8.1 daily, along with Apple Mac's OS X. My customers are approximately between 16 to 80 years of age, and I enjoy passing my knowledge on, no matter how technical / non-technical you are! I just need extra money to pay for my wedding next year, and this is something I know I can do very easily, as it is an extension of my day-to-day job. I explain how things work the way they do (if you want to know), and I explain the logic sequence of steps you must take in order to do something such as search for a new recipe or compose an email to a friend. Once the basic knowledge is there, I'll take you through how to use Google to answer 90% of life's questions!

I like to use analogies with my explanations on certain tasks, as people learn differently. However, normally I go through what it is I'm trying to teach at least once before going through it again with my student in a thorough manner.

The first session is essential for the success of the programme going forward. In this session, we evaluate current learning strengths and weaknesses in the individual student. In order to get a full picture of the student's learning priorities, we undertake the following activities to determine areas for improvement and the best conditions for success:

- reflections from the student on how they feel about their learning experience
- a learning survey - it's good fun and gives the child/student a really useful exercise in self-reflection
- analysis of recent written reports which contain teacher comments and grades recording attainment, effort, attitude to learning, punctuality, etc. School reports can vary in format so it may be that not all this detail is available
- we ask that a parent/teacher is involved for the duration of this first session to provide their own reflections on the learning profile of the child
- completion of a personalised learning contract whereby the child/student, parent/teacher and coach agree on the required conditions needed for the child/student to be successful during the programme.

Reliable and qualified Maths Teacher with 20+ years of experience of tutoring individuals and groups.

I care deeply about teaching and learning in general and the teaching of mathematics is a particular passion for me. I am a secondary school mathematics teacher with Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). I have completed a BSc in Accounting, an ACCA qualification and a PGCE course. I am currently studying for my MSc Education degree. I have 20+ years experience as a tutor and 10+ years as a teacher. I have also worked for an acounting firm for 5 years and worked as a company director for 7 years.

My first session is provided free of charge and I use this session to understand the needs of prospective pupils. At the end of the session, I have a frank and honest discussion with the pupil and/or their guardians. I use these conversations to listen to the concerns of the pupils and/or their guardians and present an outline of my assessment of the student's areas of strengths and weaknesses. I also suggest a course of action to help the pupil move forward.

Teaching Experience:

I have been providing tuition in mathematics for over 20 years and have been a secondary school Mathematics Teacher for over 10 years. I have tutored A Level, university, AAT, CAT, ACCA, CIMA and CIPFA students in accounting for over 10 years and have 5 years experience teaching professioanl accounting courses in private colleges. I have experience teaching to individual students, to small groups and to classes of up to 35 students. I have helped four year old pupils take their first steps in arithmetic and forty plus year old students finally understand how algebra works. In accounting I have worked with 16 year olds studying accounting for the first time for A Levels or CAT or AAT and 40+ year olds who have working in accounting for a long time and are studying for their professional exams.

I have helped students gain confidence in their own mathematical ability when they have been convinced by the academic system that they are incapable of doing well in the subject. I have also helped higher attaining students to challenge themselves and aspire to become even better. Most recently my Year 7 students were the only gold medallists in the UKMT Junior Mathematics Challenge in my secondary school. They did considerably better than all the other Year 7 students and even all the Year 8 students in the school who sat the same exam.

Tutoring Approach:

During the last two decades I have worked with many hundreds of students and have read research studies from academics around the world on the subject of attainment in mathematics. My own experience is in keeping with all the studies I have read about this topic. The overwhelming majority of students can do well in mathematics provided they have the confidence, the techniques and willingness to work hard. Even after only six to eight weeks of tuition, all the students I have tutored have improved by at least one grade or one level.

I tell all prospective pupils there is no magic bullet or shortcut. To achieve success in mathematics a few things are key: understanding the concept well; understanding when and how to apply it in different situations; lots of practice in applying it in different scenarios and short, regular revision sessions. So my only pre-conditions before I agree to work with any student are: a positive attitude; a commitment to put in the time and effort required to bring about the improvement in their grades; and at least one ninety minute session every week.

It is important to me that students should enjoy mathematics and look forward to their sessions with me. To ensure this I use a variety of different resources to explain concepts to students and am a firm believer in using physical and computer based study tools and aides to complement the standard oral and written tools used to teach mathematics. I also believe in linking the mathematics that we study to the real world to increase students' engagement with the topic and their understanding of its relevance. I am very patient and empathetic to my student's needs and once they develop in confidence I encourage all my students to challenge themselves regularly. Depending on the amount of time available, I usually help students cement their mastery of the foundations of arithmetic and algebra before moving on to establish fluency in statistics, geometry and problem solving.

Personal Description:
I'm an independent consultant, trainer and facilitator, working mainly in the business world. I design and run learning workshops in collaborative decision-making and lean thinking for companies of different sizes. I also facilitate Open Space events, inviting large numbers of people to co-create new ways forward in self-organised events where all the participants are at the centre and not a menu of speakers. These are like 1-or 2-day Hackathons, within organisations, such as Innovation Hackathon, Greenup Hackathon and Reinventing Work Hackathon. I also run similar events on demand within communities, in order to bring out engagement, inviting members of communities to co-create and co-determine aspects of their community.

In the business world I'm a bit of a change maverick, wanting to create a better world, and especially better workplaces where people can thrive and grow, rather the usual drudgery of work. Organisations benefit from that too from become eco-systems that thrive innovatively. I learned my 'participative' 'tools' from many years of experimentation and from working in different parts of the world. I have lived in North America, Europe and in Asia, and have travelled way beyond that.

Teaching Experience:

Most of my early teaching experience started with 13 years' English teaching to mainly corporate clients in Japan. I consider myself a highly experienced, versatile and resourceful former Language Teacher (TEFL), Tutor and Coach with further background as Intercultural Consultant. I have extensive experience teaching English in Asia, with expertise in accelerated learning techniques (e.g. suggestopedia) and Peer-based learning through Self-Organising Learning Environments.

I have taught classes and individuals at various levels and for various purposes. I have also done of business English and specialised English for professionals. While I have more experience working with groups than individuals, even as business coach and corporate trainer I have worked most of my life in an educational learning environment. The most important, however, is not about teaching, but about the student learning; it is hence imperative to start from the perspective of what the learner actually needs and working from there. I pride myself in being able to design courses and tuition tailor-made to the specific needs of the learners.

Tutoring Approach:

Unless I am teaching towards academic aims (e.g. GCSE support), I view language as something that is used to communicate with, it is something one does, we do not normally learn a foreign language just for the sake of passive knowledge. To me therefore it is far more important to use the language than just learn it. My approach to tutoring therefore is quite action oriented, we do things with the language, and just like children (who did not learn their native language from a book) language is always used in a context, so it's important to provide contextual clues when introducing new language.

I emphasize engagement and participation a lot, with a strong focus on real communication (rather than practiced communication where possible). Very early on I introduce meta-language, which is language about language (e.g. could you repeat that?, What do you mean by....?, Why do I say ... and not ...?), because this the only kind of real communication that happens in a language class, and thus it is a real opportunity to use real communication. But above all, language should be fun, learn by doing and lively, and my interactive approach always works towards that
