Personal Description:
I am a qualified teacher and current Head of Sociology in an FE college in Bristol. I am also currently finishing a part-time Masters in Psychology. I have a real passion for teaching the social sciences, a passion that is very much brought to classroom teaching and tutoring sessions on a daily basis.

I am an approachable yet focused and committed individual who truly enjoys sharing in the successes and development of others. I am a patient and caring person, and always seek to understand the learning needs of each individual in order to maximise both enjoyment and achievement.

Personal interests include triathlon and playing bass guitar.

Teaching Experience:

I have seven years of experience in teaching Sociology and Psychology at both A Level and GCSE. My students consistently achieve results above their predicted grades. I also have experience teaching English as a Foreign Language, both in London and abroad, and would welcome the opportunity to expand my experience by working with students with additional educational needs.

Tutoring Approach:

My approach to tutoring is through ensuring a personalisation of the learning experience. Each student's needs and expectations from tutoring will naturally be different, and my job is to help identify, and cater to, those individual needs.

I endeavour to create a safe, supportive, but challenging learning environment, particularly focusing on the development of the learning skills needed to be successful both in life and in an exam environment.

Above all, I try to make tutoring sessions fun and enjoyable, scaffolding concepts and theories around the everyday experiences of young people today, in order to create those connections which guarantee both short- and long-term learning.

Personal Description:
My name is Simon and I am a graduate from the University of Leeds with a strong 1st class degree in Japanese, Russian and Ukrainian languages. I have completed my MA in Japanese cultural studies and now I have recently finished a PhD in Japanese focussing on the international reception of modern Japanese popular culture.

Teaching Experience:

I have taught all three languages, Japanese, Russian and Ukrainian to all levels to various age groups in preparation for exams and or general study for the students own pleasure. I am able to advise on proper essay style for assignments for all levels ranging from primary to university education.

Whilst studying abroad in Japan and Russia as part of my formal studies I taught English as a foreign language in Konan University situated in Kobe, Japan and in Moscow state university in Moscow, thus I am more than prepared and understand the requirements of language learning both from a native speaker level and as a student.

Having lived in both Japan and Russia I am also very aware of, and competent with, colloquial Japanese and Russian language and am prepared to teach both formal language and once a grasp of the language has been achieved I can move onto more colloquial language skills to speak like a true native speaker

Tutoring Approach:

I tutor in a relaxed environment tailored to each individual student's needs and wishes.I will then help the tutee create a work plan, and work through all areas that need attention.

I feel it is important to target the areas in which a student needs and or wishes to improve in so as to boost confidence. Regarding language study, I firmly believe that self confidence is one of the most important aspects to understand so that steps towards fluency can be achieved.

I am friendly, patient and understanding, and appreciate that everyone works at a different pace.

APPROACH TO TUITION

Tailoring tuition to suit the student
The advantage of one-to-one tuition is that I can assess what specific needs a student has, and organise my lessons around those needs. Some students need essay technique help some have a specific set of topics they want to go over others might need an entire course taught to them as they have left school or are being home educated.

Knowing the syllabus
All GCSEs and A Levels follow a national syllabus, and I know them all very well. In my first lesson with any student I will make sure they are aware of the overall requirements of the syllabus, on a topic-by-topic basis. I will always stick to what the student needs to know to pass that particular syllabus I do not needlessly make students learn things they do not need to know.

Digital handouts
In my years of tuition, I have built up a cloud-based digital archive of hundreds of handouts. Say a student is learning about arguments for the existence of God for RS A Level - I have handouts very clearly outlining the Ontological, Teleological and Cosmological arguments and all relevant criticisms. These handouts are a great extra help alongside my teaching.

Teaching Experience:

I have thousands of hours of tuition experience, having taught hundreds of students. I have dozens of letters of recommendation. Some of the specific subjects I have taught include:

Government & Politics (Edexcel and OCR)
Cambridge Pre-U Theology & Philosophy
Philosophy A Level (AQA, OCR and Edexcel)
Religious Studies (OCR, AQA and Edexcel) GCSE, A Level
Sociology (AQA) AS and A2
Theology and Religious Studies at degree level (I have helped six different students receive good grades for third year RS dissertations)
Oxbridge applications and interview practice

I have a written reference from a doctor of Philosophy and college chaplain at Cambridge University, as well as an excellent reference from my full-time tutoring placement for the last year.

Extracts from letters of recommendation (all available in full on request):

"Incredibly reliable and professional...James' superior knowledge and passion for his subject resulted in my son gaining both in confidence and ability and led him to succeed in achieving a Distinction grade when his school had predicted a Merit."
Mother of Pre-U student, 2013.

"James's enthusiasm, attention to detail and ability to make the lessons interesting and absorbing has paid off...I cannot recommend James highly enough. He is punctual and thoughtful and I would not hesitate to hire him again in the future."
Mother of homeschooled A2 candidate taught full time for a year in History (Edexcel), Sociology (AQA) and Religious Studies (Edexcel), 2011/12.

"A great source of help to my daughter over the past two years; making smooth preparations for her to retake her AS level, alongside her continuing work towards her A level. He contributed invaluably towards her outstanding AS level pass mark of 100% . For her A2, Olivia received an A."
Mother of Philosophy A Level (AQA) Candidate, 2012/13.

"James was an excellent tutor. He explained complex ideas clearly and tailored his tutoring to suit my son. Importantly, he acted as a strong motivator and made sure rigourous revision notes were made... humourous, friendly and a good natured motivator. My son received an A*".
Mother of GCSE Religious Studies student (OCR), 2012/13.

"He immediately established a very good working relationship with my daughter which encouraged her to really engage with the subject and plan and think about the topics in depth. He helped her with the structure of her essays and how to build up a coherent and well thought out argument...I would highly recommend James as a Philosophy tutor."
Mother of Religious Studies (OCR) student, 2012/13.

"Jame's enthusiasm, attention to detail and ability to make the lessons interesting and absorbing has paid off...I cannot recommend Jame's highly enough. He is punctual and thoughtful and I would not hesitate to hire him again in the future."
Mother of homeschooled A2 candidate taught full time for a year in History (Edexcel), Sociology (AQA) and Religious Studies (Edexcel), 2011/12.

"James was very familiar with the curriculum and both his discussions with my son and the work set were of an appropriate and challenging level, set work was always marked and discussed at the following tutorial. My son received a good Distinction in his exams."
Mother of Pre-U Philosophy & Theology student (Cambridge), 2013.

"My daughter was unable to attend school due to illness, and so James was entirely responsible for her preparation. She received a Distinction in her exams. James was a diligent tutor, who managed to convey this difficult subject with a lightness of touch. I know that my daughter enjoyed her lessons enormously, and that she found it easy to learn from James. He not only imparted the necessary knowledge but also inspired her with confidence."
Mother of homeschooled Pre-U Philosophy & Theology student (Cambridge), who I taught the entire syllabus to in 2012/13.

"James was brilliant. Despite tutoring my two twin daughters at the same time, he adapted his teaching style to suit both of them differently. He made the whole course much easier for them to understand than they had found at school. Beyond this, he boosted their confidence and increased their essay writing skills. He provided a large amount of digital handouts which they also found useful. Both girls ended up with very high As in all the topics he taught them in."
Mother of twin daughters taught in Religious Studies (OCR) and Philosophy (AQA), 2012/13.

"...James covered far more content than the school had taught in a whole year and to a greater depth and understanding. His knowledge of the syllabus and ability to explain complex philosophical arguments and content, in a way that my daughter could understand, was second to none... put back a confidence in my daughter that had been partly destroyed in this subject due to poor teaching at school. I have never seen my daughter so relaxed and happy after taking an exam than she was after re-taking these two."
Mother of homeschooled candidate in Religious Studies (Edexcel), 2012/13.

Personal Description:
I am a highly motivated, friendly and professional tutor. I am a Sociology and Psychology Lecturer at an Independent College with extensive experience (over 16 years) of teaching both subjects at A level (AQA specification). I am passionate about my subjects and enjoy working with young people and passing on this passion and motivating them to reach their potential.

My teaching style is very interactive using students' existing knowledge and developing this further. Students are persuaded to stretch themselves and work as hard as possible in order to achieve success.

I have the ability to convey understanding in relation to complex areas of both subjects and I am able to communicate effectively to people at different academic levels and of varying academic ability.

Teaching Experience:

I have extensive experience teaching the AQA specification for both Psychology & Sociology. I have an excellent track record with 70% of Sociology students and 60% of Psychology students achieving grades A-B (June 2016 results).

For the past 16 years, I have also taught private students both subjects at A level on a one-to-one and small group basis. Many of my students have continued to study these subjects at degree level.

Tutoring Approach:

My approach is very student-centred, tailored to each student's individual requirements. I tend to use a two-way interactive approach with a focus on problem areas and difficulties that the student may need to work through. I like to use a variety of teaching techniques such as discussions, white board and powerpoint slides.

I believe that in order to achieve success students benefit from learning good exam techniques and also by working through past exam papers and plenty of practice answering exam questions.

Personal Description:
A first year Oxford Double Degree History student and double academic and music scholar. I was taught music at the Royal College of Music for over a decade. I am hard working, diligent and will always put my students first.

Teaching Experience:

Experience mainly tutoring younger children, but have done small ad-hoc pro bono tutoring sessions for older children. I specialise in both English and History tutoring, and I can tutor any book or any period for you child. Maths I will be willing to tutor up to GCSE at the most, given the board, and my music and sociology tutoring information can be provided at further request.

Tutoring Approach:

I specialise at being able to tutor online: I feel this means students can maintain studying in an environment they feel comfortable in. Another benefit is that I can document all tutoring sessions - part of me services mean that I will copy up transcripts of all the sessions for both you and your child - this means you do not need to worry about sessions being missed. To ensure you get the most out of my time, I offer my services in blocks of 5 or 10: this means that I can thoroughly cover subjects. For example, if you require emergency tutoring with a book, 5 sessions would enable me to efficiently cram topics, whilst 10 would enable me to go through this more thoroughly with you or your child. How I tailor your blocks of 5 or 10 can be discussed between both you, me, and your child. For documentation purposes, I believe typing during the online sessions can be maximally beneficial: both the child can see what i'm writing, whilst you as the parents can see exactly what is being discussed. However, if you would like me to use voice calling as well as video calling, this is no problem either.

Personal Description:
I'm Karis, a 21 year old university graduate just looking to help out wherever I can. I have worked with children and young people since mid-secondary school coaching sports. I'm a hard-working, results-driven, positive individual interested in working with children and young people as it wasn't long ago I was in their exact position in GCSE and A-Level. Growing up I wanted to be a secondary school PE teacher, but due to limited places on PGCE's nowadays, and more positive experiences as a teaching assistant, I am now considering becoming a teaching assistant, or continuing a primary school based coaching project that I'm currently taking part in in university.

Teaching Experience:

I have coached children since aged 14 in a range of sports to try and help them develop a variety of interpersonal skills, and skills and qualities in the sports.
Between the age of 16-18 I ran an after-school netball club in primary schools to develop a team and take them to competitions.
After leaving 6th form I continued going in to primary schools with my secondary school teacher, assisting her in leading sessions for the children.
During university, I completed work placements working as a teaching assistant in London.
I also worked on a project for university in taking sports and nutrition in to primary schools to relieve teachers of their PE lessons.

Tutoring Approach:

I try to be as easy-going and laid-back as I can be in my approach, I listen to what the child has to say and I help them and try to ease their knowledge out of them with a variety of questions. Its a self-discovery/self-guided approach using Mosston's Spectrum of teaching. For example, I'd ask them questions based on a particular topic or question they need to be able to answer, which leads them to figure out the correct answers themselves, etc. Not only will I use a self-discovery route, but when necessary I'd provide information and knowledge that I know in order to help them achieve their potential.

➢ Founder and Editor-in-Chief of Karl Popper Forums. (est. 1995)

Recent publication:

Teaching Experience:

I taught MA students philosophy of science at the University of Lancaster and, from 2004 to 2012, I taught at the United Arab Emirates University, specialising in the philosophy of mind and the philosophy of science, winning a prize for educational videos and podcasts. I have also designed entrance exams for USA medical colleges, covering critical thinking and logic.

Since 1990, I have also published many articles and reviews for Nature, The New Scientist, Science Spectrum and The Times Higher Educational Supplement and National Review. I am the author of The Myth of the Closed Mind: Explaining Why and How People are Rational.

Tutoring Approach:

My approcah to teaching is best summed up as student-problem-based learning, in which the student attempts to solve problems that they have identified as of stimulating interest to themselves and relevant to their intended qualifications. I believe that all learning starts with the student's own first rudimentary explorations of an issue. I act as a conversational and critical guide through this journey, providing reading material, questions, and formal techniques of citation.

My YouTube channel, currently with 38,000 view, is available for my students to consult.

Typically, a student will select an issue/question in philosophy, we will discuss it one-to-one, and then the student will produce a short essay on the issue, which we will critically discuss in the following session.

I am also available for one-on-one study days (consisting of 6 hours each) for 160.

Personal Description:
I am currently training to become a Primary School teacher. I have an undergraduate degree in Psychology, this combined with my previous work experience means I'm vastly knowledgeable about how children learn (including those with SEN).

Teaching Experience:

I have worked in primary schools as a 1:1 since the first year of university (2012). I then completed my degree in Psychology and enrolled on a School Direct course (Primary PGCE with QTS). I therefore have experience teaching children with SEN and children aged 5-11.
I have good use and experience of Makaton.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe the best approach to any kind of tutoring is one that is tailored to the person. This as well as a good relationship is what I feel produces the best results.

Personal Description:
***11+ Subject: Having successfully tutored my son 11 Plus exams for Tiffin School, I decided to teach other students in preparation for Grammar School/Independent Schools entrance exams and have great success since. I coach specific techniques, short cuts and tips which enable students to gain competitive advantages, to be "ahead of the games".

I cover 11+ VR, 11+ NVR, 11+ English and 11+ Maths subjects.

***11+ Verbal Reasoning (VR) is problem solving using vocabulary, language and mathematical skills. I coach students how to complete sequence, work out numerical codes, logical reasoning, mathematical reasoning, alphabet reasoning, word codes, patterns, anagram and coded sequences etc. My tuition helps developing students' word power, vocabulary range and reasoning skills.

***11+ Non Verbal Reasoning (NVR) is solving problems by patterns and shapes. I emphasize tackling questions on analogies, codes, similarities, series, components, patters, layering, movements, manipulations, odd one out, matrices, elements and logic etc. There are about 21 types of question set by GL Assessment, e.g. identifying or rotating the missing coded shapes etc. Strategies of ensuring students to master techniques thoroughly to a high level are implemented. My students will be able to "think on feet" and to solve problems in logic ways.

***11+ English: I prepare students for their Comprehension and Creative Writing skills, including story ideas, structure, dialogues, endings, character development, literary knowledge, vocabulary, sentence structure, spelling, grammar and punctuation.

***11+ Maths: Apart from training mental arithmetic and core maths skills, I ensure students not to get bored with numbers and formulas by introducing an element of fun into lessons, e.g. playing maths games, puzzles at the end of the session.

****Maths subjects(KS2, KS3, GCSE, A Level): Familiar with the National Curriculum, I stretch students' abilities and potentials. GCSE and A level Maths students have improved their grades and confidence following my tuition. I have proven records of raising Grade E to C, Grade D to B and Grade C to A Star.

****QTS Numeracy Skills Test: Focusing on practices of Mental Arithmetic and interpreting statistical information, I am experienced in helping candidates to pass their QTS Numeracy Skills Tests. My "Speed Methods" of calculation enable candidates to solve Mental Maths questions against limited time; "accuracy and speed" coming hand in hand. In addition, I teach Interpretation of Graphs and Data, helping candidates to identify trends and patterns; interpret statistical information; make comparison and draw conclusions when answering multi-stage questions.

I help students to make notes; look out for key phrases; draw on the graphs; identify students' common mistakes.

A basic "spoon feeding" style makes my tutees understand the techniques easily and quickly. They soon become competent and pass their QTS Numeracy Skills Tests easily after my effective coaching.

****Mandarin Chinese: HSK Exams. I am a native Mandarin Chinese speaker, very experienced in tutoring for children and adults at all levels whether it is for business, exams, travel or leisure. Familiar with the required syllabus and criteria, I'm efficient to prepare GCSE, IGCSE, IB, A Level and University Degree Chinese exams. HSK.YCT.

For the Pre-Modern Chinese Literature exam, translation, interpretation, comparison and comment on Chinese Classical Poems are taught, focusing on essay writing skills for Chinese History and Thought Exams.

I helped university student's Mandarin Grade from "Fail" to "2:1", tackling four areas of Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening skills improvement.

****A Level Sociology and Psychology: Lots of practices of exam style questions and exam techniques are the keys to gain that top mark. I aim to improve student's exam performances by going through examples and activities to develop their abilities of self-assessment or peer-assessment, thus focus on teaching essay writing skills in the format, styles used by major exam boards' Mark Schemes following the syllabus and specifications.

Students will be asked to practise past papers questions under timed condition. After weak areas are highlighted, a checklist of comments and marking will be provided.

I teach how to have most focused way to approach exam questions in order to gain maximum marks in a variety of ways:

-write balanced essays as close as to the "Model Answers".

- "read questions" (to understand what is exactly being asked), to select relevant materials, to plan and construct essays with a sharp opening, main content and closing paragraphs, using link sentences, attention on grammar and punctuation.

- using "key phrases/words" throughout an answer, link data item to the questions, giving more focused responses rather than a "knowledge list".

-develop students' abilities of evaluation, analysis, interpretation and application integrate knowledge and understanding with context and testing claims, leaving a "critical edged flavour" to the essays.

-provide alternative claims and refer them in the answer.

My teaching methods for A level Sociology and Psychology enable students to be active learners, not just sit and absorb knowledge passively. Students gained Grade A in their re-sits after my tuition defeating their original Grade D taught by their own school teachers.

Teaching Experience:

My teaching methods have enabled many pupils to successfully get into a variety of Grammar Schools (including Tiffin Girls, Langley. Slough Grammar etc). I am able to assist students in building their confidence, reaching their full potentials and stretching their abilities whilst maintaining high academic performances.

In addition, my teaching style is geared towards building problem solving skills, improving accuracy and speed, providing remedial work for those struggling as well as making study interesting and engaging.

Tutoring Approach:

Flexible approach to suit the students' needs, my methods include using past paper practice, taking direct questions from the student, explaining new topics, reviewing old concepts as well as teaching tricks and shortcuts.

If the distance is far, there will be a travel fee.
